Illinois Legalizes Medical Kush For Patients Via HuffingtonPost Illinois on Thursday officially became the 20th U.S. state to legalize medical mary jane. At a ceremony at the University of Chicago, Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn signed the bill while joined by Jim Champion, a military veteran who suffers from multiple sclerosis, the Chicago Tribune reports. “I feel that this is something, whatever faith we practice, we all believe that helping those who are sick, helping them recover and also helping them deal with pain, that’s a tenet in every faith and every religion,” the governor said a the Thursday ceremony, as reported by NBC Chicago. The law — instituting a four-year pilot medical mary jane program — will go into effect on Jan. 1. It allows individuals with serious diseases including cancer, HIV and multiple sclerosis to get a special ID card allowing them to buy limited amounts — up to two-and-a-half ounces — of medical mary jane from one of 60 state-licensed dispensaries. Medical mary jane users must have established relationships with a doctor who will OK their usage of the drug. Furthermore… Illinois’ rules are among some of the strictest in the nation, according to Karen O’Keefe, director of state policies at the Mary jane Policy Project. The Washington-D.C. based legalization advocacy group tracks state laws and helps some craft bills. For one, Illinois won’t allow home growing operations like more than a dozen other states do. The growing centers will have to be under 24-hour video surveillance, which is uncommon compared to other states. O’Keefe said most states also have more general guidelines on who can obtain medical mary jane. Legalizing medical mary jane faced some opposition in Illinois, mainly from opponents who feared it would encourage drug use and authorities who feared it would complicate driving-under-the-influence tests. Some anti-crime groups also objected to the 2.5-ounce amount, which they said was too much. Bill sponsor Rep. Lou Lang, dismissed the concerns, saying it would be difficult to obtain the drug for anyone who didn’t need it. “This was for the patients,” Lang said Thursday. “This was for the state of health care … in Illinois.” He has also said that the 2.5-ounce amount is to accommodate patients who ingest, not smoke, it, such as baked goods. Chicago Mother And 1-Year-Old Son Shot While Sitting In Van At The Park A mother and her 1-year-old son who were shot while sitting inside of their van at the park are said to be in stable condition and resting at the local hospital. via Chicago Tribune A mother and her 1-year-old son were wounded as they sat in a van packed with women and children near a South Side park, according to police and family. Leslie Freeman was in the front passenger seat with Demonte Freeman on her lap, enjoying the cool summer evening near Murray Park in West Englewood, when the side door of a red van slid open and two men fired nearly a dozen shots around 6 p.m Sunday, according to relatives. The bullets missed a 7-year-old child who was outside the van and four younger children who were inside. But they hit Leslie Freeman in the wrist and the boy in the leg. “She panicked,” said the woman’s uncle, John Edwards. “She just knew that Demonte was shot worse than she was.” Demonte and a 1-year-old cousin were both stained with blood and relatives believed both had been shot, relatives said. But then they realized that the blood came from Demonte, who had fallen onto his cousin after being shot. “He didn’t even actually cry when he was shot,” said the boy’s grandmother, Sabrina Freeman, 46. “I don’t know if he was in shock or whatever.” A family friend drove Demonte and his mother to Holy Cross Hospital, where they were later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital and reported as stable. Freeman said her grandson “is doing all right. They decided to leave the bullet in because they don’t want to remove the bullet right now.” “I couldn’t believe it when I got the call,” Sabrina Freeman said. “Who would do something like this?” She said her daughter “didn’t understand why this happened to her. She’s not this type of person, she’s not in the streets or anything like that. She’s worried about her son, her baby. Whoa… Tour Guide Shares Story Of Being Swallowed Alive By Hippo This is some WILD ish….. via Huffington Post “There was a terrible, sulphurous smell, like rotten eggs, and a tremendous pressure against my chest,” Paul Templer said, recalling the moment he realized he had been swallowed by a hippopotamus. At the time, Templer was 27, a river guide taking groups of tourists down the Zambezi river near Victoria Falls, along the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. His near-death story appeared in The Guardian’s “Experience” series on Friday and has since grabbed headlines around the world. “I remember looking up through 10 feet of water at the green and yellow light playing on the surface, and wondering which of us could hold his breath the longest,” he wrote in The Guardian. “Blood rose from my body in clouds, and a sense of resignation overwhelmed me. I’ve no idea how long we stayed under — time passes very slowly when you’re in a hippo’s mouth.” The hippo’s teeth savaged Templer’s chest and left arm. But he told The Chicago Tribune in an earlier interview that he still counts himself very lucky. “I went straight down his throat. It smelled like death,” Templer said in the Tribune. And yet, when the hippo “bit into my lungs he missed my heart. He missed my liver and kidneys.” Although Templer carried a .357-caliber Magnum firearm, he told the Tribune he never got a chance to pull it. Teenage Chicago Gunman Shot And Killed By Police A Chicago teenager who police say was recklessly firing shots at pedestrians while riding on his bike has lost his life after being fatally shot by Chicago police officers. via Chicago Tribune A teenaged gunman on a bicycle who officials said was firing shots at pedestrians and police officers was fatally shot by police this afternoon on the West Side, according to authorities. The gunman, who is 15 or 16, was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to Pat Camden, a police union spokesman. It happened in the 1300 block of South Independence Boulevard in the Lawndale neighborhood, according to police. At about 4:10 p.m., Ogden District tactical officers were northbound on Independence Boulevard approaching Roosevelt Road when they heard gunshots coming from the west side of Independence, according to a statement released by Chicago Police Department News Affairs. When the officers made a U-turn and crossed the median, they spotted the offender firing shots at pedestrians and fleeing southbound on a bicycle while brandishing a handgun, the statement said. “He was riding a bicycle firing at people on the street,” Camden said. The officers were pursuing the offender when he turned towards the officers and fired shots at them, prompting the officers to fire their weapons and hit the gunman, the statement said. “They’re right behind him in an unmarked car beeping their sirens and flashing their lights when he turns around, twice, and fired at the squad car,” Camden said. “The third time he turned around, the passenger in the squad car fired at him and hit him,” Camden said. “He was DOA at Mount Sinai.” Judging from what we know so far, it sounds like police had no other choice but to do what they did before this young man harmed anyone else. They need a res-o-lution… Boy Scouts To Allow Gay Youth But Ban Gay Adults After a lengthy decision process, the Boy Scouts of America organization is finally moving towards a potential decision regarding the policy revision of their long-standing ban on gay members. via Chicago Tribune The Boy Scouts of America on Friday proposed lifting a ban on gay scouts but maintaining a prohibition on gay adults from leading troops, a compromise that attempts to end a fight that has split the century-old American institution into bitter factions. Reaction from scouting supporters ranged from outrage to limited approval. The biggest organization in scouts, the Mormon Church, said it was studying the proposal, leaving uncertain the outcome of a May vote by scout leaders that will set policy. Gay rights groups said continuing to bar gay adults was unacceptable, but they welcomed the change for youths. “The general feeling is that this is a bad move,” which could precipitate a major crisis, A.J. Smith, president of the Association of Baptists for Scouting, wrote in a website post, attempting to summarize Baptists’ views. “This is about a concerted effort to bring down a cultural icon. The usually low key mother of two recently ventured out in Miami and in her home town of Akron, Ohio to speak to groups of young, underprivileged girls while also donating prom dresses. via AP Big Story Savannah Brinson is about to marry someone who’s widely considered the best basketball player in the world, which means the level of privacy she’s always craved will surely continue to erode. And after years of fighting that, she has decided to embrace it as reality. Brinson — better known as the fiancée of Miami Heat star LeBron James — is starting to step more into the public eye now, with hopes that whatever level of celebrity she has can be a tool to help children who need some assistance. Her first step in that endeavor was helping to provide prom dresses for about 100 underprivileged girls in her current home of Miami and her hometown of Akron, Ohio, doing so at a pair of events in recent days. “I can’t imagine being in their situation and not have somebody help,” said Brinson, whose wedding is scheduled for this summer. “I really care. It’s really in my soul to help people, and this is the first baby to come from it. There comes a time when you have to give back.” Lebron also spoke out about his soon-to-be wife’s latest efforts, insisting that this was what she was born to do. Ever since James came to Miami in July 2010, Brinson has largely shunned the spotlight, even though her longtime partner — she and the three-time NBA MVP have two sons together and were high school sweethearts — has encouraged her to be as visible as she wants. So in recent weeks, very quietly, she’s starting to step out. And James remains all for that. “I just think she has a knack for being powerful,” James said. “Women are more powerful than men. Juan A. DeJesus, 19, of the 1700 block of Meade Avenue, was charged Monday with one count of misdemeanor possession of wildlife, police said. A state Department of Natural Resources police officer responded to an advertisement that was posted on Craigslist and went to DeJesus’ home Monday afternoon under the pretenses he was going to purchase the alligator, police said. The ad, which has since been pulled from Craigslist, stated: “Baby gator for sale, id consider a trade for a leachie gecko. Sale price is 300 obo asap.” DeJesus came out of his home with the alligator and said he would like to have $300 for it, but the officer identified himself and told DeJesus of the violation, police said.
