Katy Perry Postpones Tour Dates Due To Illness

Pop star reschedules two concerts after ‘an attack of food poisoning leading to severe dehydration.’ By James Dinh Katy Perry Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Another day, another sick pop star cancels summer tour dates. Just two days after Taylor Swift announced to fans that she would have to postpone dates on her Speak Now Tour because of bronchitis, Katy Perry said on Friday (July 8) that she will have to postpone two dates on her California Dreams trek after suffering from “an attack of food poisoning leading to severe dehydration.” According to a statement from concert promoters Jam Productions, Perry has rescheduled her July 8 show at Chicago’s Allstate Arena for August 21, and her July 9 gig at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center for August 23 in the same venues. And once recovered, Perry said she plans to make it up to her fans. “I apologize to my fans in Chicago and the Twin Cities for not being able to perform this weekend, but I am going to return in a few weeks to give them the very best show ever!” she said. Perry also took to Twitter to deliver the unfortunate news, tweeting , “Chicago and St. Paul – I’m so sorry to have to postpone today and tomorrow’s shows. But I’ll be back 8/21 (CHI) and 8/23 (St. Paul)!” Despite the tour-date postponement, the pop singer has been riding high off of her mega-successful Teenage Dream album, which is closing in on Michael Jackson ‘s #1 singles record. If the LP’s recently released “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” hits the top of the Billboard Hot 100, she’ll become the first female artist to have five chart-topping songs off one album. Additionally, Perry will become the first artist to nab the record since Jackson, who had five #1 singles off his Bad album in the late-’80s. Send your well-wishes for a speedy recovery to Katy in the comments! Related Artists Katy Perry

Katy Perry, Lil Wayne, U2 Among Summer’s Biggest Tours

Experts also see big jaunts for Taylor Swift, Blink-182, Foo Fighters and Avett Brothers. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Summer is the time to kick back at the pool, work on that tan and blast your favorite sprinkler jams , but it’s also the season to pack into your Nissan Cube and tromp down to the local amphitheater or arena to check out shows by the likes of Katy Perry , Lil Wayne , Foo Fighters , Rihanna , Taylor Swift , Britney Spears and My Morning Jacket . Just like movie studios roll out the big guns around the holidays in time to take a shot at Oscar gold, music stars know that summer is the best time to separate fans from their hard-earned babysitting and lifeguarding money. That’s why local venues are stuffed up with a bumper crop of big shows packing enough pyro and lasers to take out an invading alien army in an effort to get the most butts in seats. We asked a panel of experts to make their picks for the summer’s hottest ticket, and like Oscar voters, they all had their favorites, but there was one thing they could all agree on: Taylor Swift and veteran rockers U2 are going to clean house this summer. “I think in terms of demand and crossing over from theaters to arenas, Katy Perry is doing it right,” said Dave Brooks, senior writer for live-entertainment trade magazine Venues Today. Between her many TV appearances, magazine covers and record-setting string of hit singles from Teenage Dream, Brooks said Perry is doing everything right and creating great demand for an eye-popping extravaganza that is “pulling out all the stops.” Us Weekly senior music editor Ian Drew agreed, saying Perry’s tour is sure to entertain. “[It’s a] colorful, all-out spectacle,” he said of the cotton-candy-smelling outing . “Remember that Lady Gaga is not out on the road this summer, so there’s going to be no competition. … The tour is an all-out spectacle. It’s basically like going to a massive Broadway show.” Another artist who seems to have solved the live-headliner puzzle fairly quickly is Swift, who Brooks said has endeared herself to the industry and to fans through her professionalism, dedication and prodigious talent. “She moves tickets really quickly, and her two L.A. shows sold out right away and they added two more,” he said, noting that Swift does so well because she appeals to a wide audience that ranges from tween girls to adult women. Blogger Perez Hilton’s pick to click was Swift, whom he predicted would have the most buzzed-about tour by summer’s end. “Just because she is performing so many shows, [playing] sold-out arenas, and to her credit, no one else that is a female artist is doing this right now … playing stadiums in America … that is major.” It remains to be seen how some early cancellations due to illness will affect the rest of Swift’s outing. With such heavy-hitting rap stars as Jay-Z, Kanye West and an incarcerated T.I. absent from the touring scene (outside of spot festival dates), Brooks said hard-touring Lil Wayne once again has the lane to himself and should keep packing them in for his never-ending I Am Still Music Tour . Brooks wasn’t sure how the Britney Spears/ Nicki Minaj tour was going to pan out, noting that advance ticket numbers didn’t look that impressive and that good seats could still be found on Groupon just days before a number of the dates for the two divas. Drew said that despite the lack of buzz, Britney loyalists will still come out because of their love for everything Brit and the allure of Minaj. “It’s just gonna be two very big divas on the charts now coming together in one awesome show,” he said. When it comes to the summer swing by reunited punk-poppers Blink-182 , who will be playing a string of dates with goth-pop icons My Chemical Romance, Brooks said the early signs are good. He suspected the pairing could introduce a new generation to the spiky Blink sound, was willing to bet that rock icons Foo Fighters would continue to do solid business and had a good feeling about rising softer rockers Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver. His pick to keep an eye on was the Avett Brothers, the North Carolina sibling honky-tonkin’ bluegrass band, who have developed a really solid, devoted road following and are about to play a sold-out show at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado on Saturday. Pollstar editor in chief Gary Bongiovanni said there was no doubt that U2’s massive 360 Tour — already expected to be the highest-grossing of all time when it wraps — will be the summer’s biggest hit, despite the fact that it will end in the middle of beach season on July 23. He said early numbers also indicate that Wiz Khalifa’s theater and small outdoor venue tour is looking very strong and he expects solid, but not blockbuster, numbers for the NKOTBSB boy-band package . Though it has only 12 dates remaining, Bongiovanni said Dave Matthews Band’s Caravan — what he called a “portable festival” — promises to do solid business with three-night stands in New York, Chicago and Washington state, featuring an eclectic lineup that includes the Flaming Lips, Ray LaMontagne, Amos Lee, Moe, Kid Cudi, De La Soul, Soja, the Roots, Dispatch, O.A.R., the Head and the Heart and Gogol Bordello. When it comes to new-breed rock bands like Kings of Leon and My Morning Jacket, Bongiovanni said it all depends on pricing the tickets right. “I think pricing will be more in tune with the economic times this year,” he said. “Everyone played it conservative in 2009 and then they pushed the envelope in 2010 and they saw serious pushback.” As for his pick to watch, Bongiovanni said not to underestimate the pull of dance-music stars like Ti

Common Reveals Warner Bros. CEO Invited Him To Label

Lyor Cohen approached rapper, who departed Universal Music in 2009. By Alvin Blanco Common Photo: Chris Weeks/ Getty Images Last week, Chicago rapper Common revealed that he is taking his rhyme talents to Warner Bros. Records . Surprisingly, the “Universal Mind Control” rapper tells MTV News that he had been a free agent since December 2009, when he departed from his longtime Universal Music recording home. The rapper and actor, currently shooting an AMC television series called “Hell on Wheels” that will premiere in the fall, released his last album, Universal Mind Control, in December 2008. The album was met with mixed reviews and didn’t reach the same gold sales of his previous two projects, the critically acclaimed Be and Finding Forever . But a certain record executive didn’t lose faith in the veteran rap lyricist. “Point blank, I got a call from [Warner CEO] Lyor Cohen,” Common told MTV News. “He was like, ‘Look, man, I know who you are. I always told you, you was one of my favorite MCs, and I really meant that.’ “I felt the sincerity in what he was saying. He didn’t tell me, ‘We’re going to do this, do that.’ He was more like, ‘I know how we can do your record, and I want to work this. I want this to be on my roster.’ ” The Warner music chairman knows a thing or two about talent. Through the years, “the check writer” has had a hand in the careers of star MCs such as Run-DMC, LL Cool J and Jay-Z. Before getting the call from Cohen, Common had been toying with the idea of going the indie-label route to release his music. “I felt like, man, it would be good because it’s so much … we do have a lot going on,” Common explained. “I am doing these acting projects. I do have my foundation. I do have a daughter and a life, too. So it’s all these things I want to take care of, I felt like I didn’t want to have an independent label that I felt like you gotta be there for everything, every decision. I’d rather have a team that’s already in place that’s really confident in what I’m doing.” Although G.O.O.D. Music recently inked a worldwide label agreement with Island Def Jam Music Group, Common is still affiliated with Kanye West’s label. “It’s still G.O.O.D. Music all day and night,” he said. Common’s ninth album, The Dreamer, The Believer, is due out in November. What do you think of Common’s decision to sign with Warner Bros. Records? Sound off below! Related Artists Common

Carmelo Anthony Wants To Help Out Pal Cassidy

‘He’s ready to focus on what he needs to focus on,’ NBA superstar tells Mixtape Daily of Cass’ post-prison career. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Carmelo Anthony and Diego Cash Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Carmelo Anthony NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony has an array of breathtaking moves on the court, but his off-court moves are just as noteworthy. As the head of Krossover Entertainment, Anthony is launching the career of up-and-coming rapper Diego Ca$h as well as helping the already-established Cassidy reinvent his career. In May, Cassidy was arrested after a warrant was issued stemming from a probation violation. The “I’ma Hustla” rapper, who is now home, explained that the incident all began after he missed an appointment with his P.O., but he’s now looking to put the situation behind him. ‘Melo is in full support. “He’s good, man. He’s home. I’m glad he figured it out, got through that situation,” Anthony said, updating Mixtape Daily on his buddy. “I’m glad he got that behind him, and now he’s ready to focus on what he needs to focus on — I’m pretty sure getting back into the studio and throwing that under the rug.” Anthony estimates that he and Cassidy met about three years ago, after the New York Knick reached out to the Philly rapper to appear on a Diego Ca$h record. “I tried to get him on a track with one of my artists. He actually did the track, and it just took off from there,” ‘Melo recalled. “He was available; he was a free agent at the time. He had just came home from jail. He was trying to reinvent himself, and I just thought it was the perfect opportunity at the time to give him new light.” In addition to providing some assistance to Cass, Anthony has been positioning the relatively underground Diego Ca$h as an artist to watch for. Ca$h’s latest video, “Return of the Rican,” was shot during the 2011 Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City and features hip-hop veteran Fat Joe. While Carmelo does have quite a few extracurricular activities, his focus is still on the basketball court. Though ‘Melo’s New York Knicks were swept out of the NBA Playoffs, losing four straight games to the Boston Celtics, Anthony seems focused and ready to continue balling in his hometown after he was traded to NY from Denver in February. “I’m home now; that’s the most important thing.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . ‘Transformers: Dark Of The Moon’ Thrills Opening Night Crowds

Robot flick nabs $13.5 million from Tuesday-night screenings. By Morgan Schwartz Shia LaBeouf and Rosie Huntington-Whitely in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount NEW YORK — The “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” red carpet in Times Square on Tuesday evening was packed with fans, stars and possibly a few Autobots eager to see the third installment of Michael Bay’s explosive franchise . Theaters across the country were similarly swarming during evening screenings on opening night, with the alien robot flick nabbing $13.5 million in pre-midnight and midnight screenings, according to Deadline.com . And though the atmosphere in front of the screening that MTV News attended was excited, several in the crowd were cautious about their hopes for the flick. “I’ve actually had lower expectations since the second one,” Joseph Dornoff told us before he walked in. “So, I’m not expecting anything from it.” His friend, Patrick Farace, who has been anxiously waiting to see the third film since he heard of its release, also shared his hope to see “a better plot than the last one, amazing action. I’m excited to see Shockwave — he’s the new villain.” Judging by the reaction in the audience, “Dark of the Moon” surpassed many people’s expectations. Fans clapped, cheered and possibly even shed a tear as the Autobots battled the evil Decepticons in their quest to bring home planet Cybertron to Earth. Although the third film featured the same basic good vs. evil fight peppered with romance as the first two, everything seemed to be bigger in this one. The battles between Megatron, Sentinel Prime, Bumblebee and Optimus Prime were the clear fan favorite. “[It’s great] when Optimus comes by and just starts ripping everybody apart,” said Wesley Arocho after the movie was done. “This action is made even more exciting by the fact that for the first time, audiences got to view it in 3-D .” “The 3-D was great. All the special effects were great,” Carlos Barrozi added. “It was better than past movies. It didn’t hurt your eyes. You were able to watch it without wanting to take your glasses off,” said Briana Brink-Rivera. Two friends, Mustafa Ahmed and Munawar Ali Mohd, even went so far as to say seeing the epic Chicago action in 3-D was “a dream come true.” Even Sam Witwicky’s (Shia LaBeouf) love life seemed to be hotter in the third film. When asked which of Sam’s love interests they preferred, newcomer Rosie Huntington-Whiteley or former franchise hottie Megan Fox, brothers Brandon and Bryce McCright responded simultaneously, “Rosie!” If the response on opening night is any indication, Bay and company can rest assured that they’ve redeemed themselves after “Revenge of the Fallen.” Now, the only question that remains is: Can we expect a fourth? ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ Trailer Premieres

First sneak peek at Tom Cruise’s fourth ‘Mission’ teases death-defying stunts. By Kara Warner Paula Patton and Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” Photo: Paramount Pictures If there is one thing we can count on from Tom Cruise in a “Mission: Impossible” movie, it is mind-blowing action and stunt sequences. From his first foray into the spy-tastic world of Ethan Hunt to his fourth, the upcoming “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” Cruise has been one-upping himself in the stunt category. And judging from the first official trailer, which was released Tuesday evening (June 28), his work on the fourth “Mission,” directed by “The Incredibles” helmer Brad Bird, is no exception. The trailer opens with the ominous words of Tom Wilkinson, whose character name we have yet to learn, essentially laying out the nuts and bolts of the plot. “An hour ago, a bomb blew up the Kremlin,” he says, as footage of the Kremlin blowing up appear onscreen. “The president has initiated Ghost Protocol, the entire IMF has been disavowed,” he explains of Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) spy organization. “Now, I’ve been ordered to take you to Washington where they will hang the Kremlin bombing on you and your team, unless you were to escape after assaulting Brandt and me,” says Wilkinson, shown seated in a car with Brandt (played by Jeremy Renner) and Hunt. “But if any of your team is caught, they’ll be branded as terrorists.” “So what happens now?” Hunt asks. “Your mission, should you choose to accept it,” Wilkinson begins, recalling the series’ famous line before being cut off so he won’t spoil the plot entirely (although, if were to guess, the mission is probably to prove his team’s innocence in the Kremlin bombing). His words are followed by a series of quick cuts that showcase and introduce the various castmembers, potential villains, etc. Renner as Brandt, Paula Patton, a serious-looking Josh Holloway, Cruise as Hunt in a series of wardrobe changes ranging from dapper formal wear to more rugged leather. Then we see snippets of those famous Cruise-brand action sequences: car chases, underwater escapes, machine-gun fire, hand-to-hand combat, lots of running, more fighting and martial arts, more running, and plenty of spy-associated breaking and entering, which all leads up to a potential character reveal about Brandt. “Who are you really, Brandt?” Hunt asks, in a scene where the two characters apparently come to blows. “We all have our secrets,” Brandt responds. “Don’t we, Ethan?” Cue the famous bars of Lalo Schrifin’s “Theme From Mission: Impossible,” which plays over Hunt looking out over Dubai, standing on the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. This is followed by a quick cut to a previous scene wherein tech master Benji Dunn (played by Simon Pegg) shows Hunt how to use a pair of fancy gadget gloves, which we soon see help him scale the Burj. “You’re not going to make it!” Brandt yells to Hunt, who is climbing and jumping up and around the side of the building. “You’re not helping,” Hunt says, before the final shot, which shows the superspy repelling away from the Burj with a rope, which he loses midair and looks to plummet to the ground. Fade to black and the film’s official titling. Cruise’s wife, Katie Holmes , told MTV News recently that she was privy to a sneak peek of the film and that it’s “amazing.” “The movie is going to be very cool and intense and the best ‘Mission’ yet.” First-time live-action director Bird echoed Holmes’ sentiments , adding that Cruise did a lot of the craziest and most dangerous stunts himself. “It’s big and it is crazy,” he said. “I think the craziest thing is that [the stunts] are real they’re not digital. That’s Tom Cruise on the tallest building in the world, he’s doing all that stuff,” Bird said of Cruise’s death-defying stunts. “People won’t believe it, but we shot it in IMAX so it’s there for everyone to see.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Transformers: Dark Of The Moon’ Premiere Marks ‘Graduation Day’

‘I wish I could have worn one of those funny hats, dude,’ Shia LaBeouf jokes to MTV News at NYC debut. By Josh Wigler Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Shia LaBeouf attend the “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” premiere in New York City Photo: Getty Images Mark your calendars, boys and girls: June 28, 2011, is officially “Transformers” Day in New York City, as announced at Tuesday night’s red-carpet premiere of “Dark of the Moon,” the third (and potentially final) installment in Michael Bay’s robot-smashing, record-obliterating blockbuster trilogy. On one hand, it was an event packed with more excitement and enthusiasm than a downtown Chicago brawl between Optimus Prime and his Decepticon rivals. On the other, it was bittersweet. “It feels like graduation day, you know?” Shia LaBeouf told MTV News about his feelings on the night of the premiere. “I never went to college. I spent all of my college years on the set. This is my graduation. I wish I could have worn one of those funny hats, dude.” But even LaBeouf was able to make light of the situation. Asked what he’d wear underneath his graduation gown, he laughed: “Nothing. A unitard. A leopard unitard and a graduation hat.” For Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the Victoria’s Secret model making her acting debut and replacing former leading lady Megan Fox in the process, this was the crowning achievement of an already-breathtaking experience. “It’s blowing my mind to be here right now,” she said of the premiere, which took place in a packed stretch of New York’s famous Times Square. “I’ll never, ever forget the last couple of weeks. It’s been a dream come true. You see all of your hard work paying off. Look at all of these amazing people that [came out to] support this movie. It’s really humbling.” Humbling (and probably overwhelming) isn’t a surprising reaction, considering the presence of hundreds upon hundreds of “Transformers” fans holding signs like “I
