In China, Three Gorges Dam’s image showing some cracks

The dam was hailed as an engineering feat that could withstand the worst flood in 100 years. But this year's torrential rains have severely tested its capacity to control the surging Yangtze. snip A year after the dam went into full operation, cracks are already showing in the public image of the project. This year's torrential rains, the nation's worst in a decade, have severely tested the project's capacity to control the surging Yangtze, the world's third-longest river. Last month, when floodwaters poured into the dam's 400-mile-long reservoir at 565,000 cubic feet per second, a government official acknowledged that “the dam's flood-control capacity is not unlimited” and hinted that more severe flooding could even risk the structure's collapse. That's a far cry from the highfalutin claims of just a few years ago. In 2003, officials boasted that the dam could withstand the worst flood in 10,000 years. In 2007, the estimate was reduced to 1,000 years. In 2008, it was dropped yet again, this time to just 100 years. Many engineering experts are worried about this year. “The flooding is greater than anyone expected,” said John Byrne, director of the University of Delaware's Center for Energy and Environmental Policy. “The problems that many people predicted appear to be showing themselves.” Newspapers here report that the reservoir's rising water level has increased the likelihood of such hazards as landslides and earthquakes. Officials even say the structure won't totally stop Yangtze flooding, which has killed an estimated 1 million people over the last century. “It can't defeat all under heaven,” the project's deputy operations manager said of the dam. A project promoted by Chairman Mao Tse-tung, the Three Gorges Dam was long hailed by Communist Party officials as a crafty way to solve several complex problems with one structure. Damming the Yangtze allows seafaring ships access to the river, with the reservoir able to accommodate the deep-hulled vessels, and open up China's landlocked interior to economic development. The clean, cheap energy generated by the dam would help wean China off coal-fired power plants, officials said. Yet in recent years, the government has toned down its boasts on the project, which seems to have fallen out of favor in Beijing's halls of power. When the dam officially opened in 2006, Chinese leader Hu Jintao was conspicuously absent. Critics claim the dam's legion of problems far outweigh its benefits. They point to the reservoir's silt accumulation that they say will prevent the passage of the deep-sea ships. The dam has also disrupted the migratory routes of several unique fish species, they say. Many worry the reservoir could turn into a cesspool of sewage, toxins and other pollutants discharged from factories upstream. In recent weeks, the heavy rains have caused thousands of tons of garbage to collect at the dam, threatening to jam its locks. Although tugs and fishing boats have recently helped to collect the garbage, in some spots the trash is still so thick people can stand on it. For years, journalist Dai Qing has been one of the project's most vocal skeptics. In 1989, she led an alliance of scientists, engineers and scholars in writing a book called “Yangtze! Yangtze!” outlining alleged corruption and shoddy construction in the project. The book was banned, and Dai was jailed for 10 months for anti-government organizing. Two decades later, she still calls Three Gorges a spectacular mistake. “They've destroyed the Yangtze River, China's most phenomenal waterway, and caused untold damage to a fragile environment — and those are just the problems we know about,” she said. “Man's understanding of nature is evolving, but China has always been a half-step behind. But the greedy people in power wanted electricity at any cost.” The dam's biggest toll is a human one, many say. More than 1.5 million people were resettled by the project, their land submerged under the dam's reservoir. Also lost were 1,300 important archaeological sites, many dating back 4,000 years. continued added by: JanforGore

Performing Animals Mistreated in China, Reports Animals Asia, an Animal Rights Campaign Group | Photos | Video

PLEASE be sure to look at the four photos, and when you get to the fourth photo, just imagine if that were you… or a child of yours… http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/08/12/china.performing.animals/index.html?… Performing animals mistreated in China, says report August 15, 2010 11:21 p.m. EDT (CNN) — Bears riding motorcycles, tigers jumping through flaming hoops and pigs leaping off diving boards. Just some of the “entertainment” that can be seen at circuses, zoos and safari parks in China, according to a report by Animals Asia into animals cruelty. The Hong Kong-based animal rights campaign group visited 13 safari parks and zoos in China and according to David Neale, Animals Asia's Animal Welfare Director, found that the animal shows “portray the animal to the public in a humiliating way” and have no educational value. “There is a misunderstanding really within China at the moment about what these animals are experiencing,” Neale told CNN. The report says that many of the performance animals that include tigers, lions, Asiatic black bears, elephants and monkeys are born and bred in captivity and brutalized throughout their lives. Video: Cruelty to performing animals “These animals have been suffering from birth, really. Once they're born they go into this industry. And straight away the trainers are starting to brutalize them to make them to do these tricks…. We saw some of the training of the younger animals; they were continually hit to make sure they learnt these tricks so that when they're out in the performance ring they perform them to the best standard.” “Once the trick is finished they then go to the backstage area where they're housed in the most shocking conditions. All kinds of animals are held in cages full of faeces, with very little access to water, very little access to food.” The abuse of performing animals isn't specific to China. “Animal cruelty is happening in every country across the world,” said Neale. However Neale points out that in China there are currently no animal protection laws, a reason why Animals Asia have worked with Chinese academics to draft legislation not just for animals in captivity, but all animals. Despite the findings of their investigation, Neale is encouraged by a few signs of progress by the Chinese government to take animal protection seriously. According to a government report on July 29 the Chinese State Forestry Administration accused companies that have animal performance shows of having excessive focus on profits, leading to the mistreatment and death of the animals. “We're very pleased that the Chinese government has said that they want the zoos and safari parks to look at the conditions they keep their animals in to rectify these problems,” said Neale. added by: EthicalVegan

Chinese Missile Could Shift Pacific Power Balance

Naval power has been a prerequisite for national dominance during the last 500 years, and Chinese planners are astute historians. It is time Americans face up to the probability that China will challenge our way of life through aggressive military action within the next 10 years. What would the consequences of Chinese-American military conflict include? 1) Severe food and resource shortages for the majority of people in both countries. 2) Heavy casualties on the battlefield and high seas. 3) Unpredictable refugee migrations which would disrupt the lives of nations allied with either country. 4) Long-term environmental damage. 5) The end of international Internet communications as a result of both countries destroying satellites, and, as a result, a return to pre-1990 conditions in terms of communications. 6) Human misery on a scale not seen since the Second World War. What can we do to prevent such conflict from taking place? Since American public opinion is devalued in China (as a result of heavy Chinese government censorship and organized propaganda), Americans with ties to Chinese citizens must reach out more to strengthen the ties of common interest and friendship. Americans must press their military leaders to become more innovative and adaptable in facing new forms of threats from China and other nations. This must include reassessment of the top-heavy and bloated American military-industrial complex which does not currently provide us with a reliable defense system. We must also become more self-sufficient in producing our own food, clothing, and shelter, so that if the nation's infrastructure is destroyed, we can survive to fight on. War is an obscenity, and planning for war is a sickening and disheartening task; however, those who refuse to face real threats end up imprisoned, enslaved, or dead. added by: Progresshiv

REVIEW: Risky Spring Fever Wins Some, Loses Some

Spring Fever is a work of defiance, for better and worse. Director Lou Ye’s sixth film is also his first filmed in violation of a five-year ban on production imposed by the Chinese Film Bureau after the 2006 release of Summer Palace, which dealt directly with the Tiananmen Square rebellion. Shot on the sly in Nanjing, Spring Fever maps two extra angles onto an already unconventional love triangle, frankly inverting the dominant sexual dynamic of the melodrama: Three of the five participants are men, and none of them are that interested in the women.

Toxic Spill at Chinese Copper Mine Kills Nearly 1,900 Tons of Fish

Photo via PhysOrg A top mining company in China, the Zijin Mining Group, allowed a toxic waste water to spill into the Ting river, polluting the major water way, killing nearly 1,900 tons of fish, and threatening the fishing industry in the area. The toxic spill wasn’t so much a spill, as a result of gross negligence — worn equipment and some shady activity. Investigators found that the 320,000 cubic feet of “leaked” waste water actually flowed from a sludge point to the Ting river through an “illegally built passage.” The pollution has spread down river into the Guangdong provi… Read the full story on TreeHugger

UFO over Chinese Airport

“It is a hidden U.S. bomber flying toward China,” one Internet user wrote on Monday. Another wrote on Sunday night, “In my opinion, the UFO is neither a U.S. missile nor a Russian satellite. Suggestions that it is extraterrestrial are even more preposterous. Everyone, use your head. This is clearly a man-made phenomenon. Would the U.S. or Russia risk provoking China#39;s anger by firing a missile or satellite rocket in Chinese skies, without warning? I believe the Chinese military is responsible

‘Inception’ Stars Fondly Recall Slapping Leo, Sipping Tea For Film

Lukas Haas, Tom Hardy and Ken Watanabe share the highs and lows of making the mind-bending flick. By Kara Warner Leonardo DiCaprio at the “Inception” premiere on Tuesday Photo: Robyn Beck/ Getty Images HOLLYWOOD — The anticipation for “Inception” hit a fever pitch Tuesday night , when the film’s stars descended upon the U.S. premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Tourists and fans alike crammed together, trying to catch a glimpse of the star-studded black-and-red carpet, backed by a continuous loop of Hans Zimmer’s intense, ominous score. The stars of Christopher Nolan’s latest mind-bender were less-than-ominous, however, when they shared the highlights of their experience working on the movie, which opens on Friday. For Lukas Haas, the most fun aspect of shooting “Inception” was the stunt work … and getting to slap his longtime friend Leonardo DiCaprio in the face. “I had to slap Leo a few times,” Haas told MTV News. “I was a little hesitant [to do it]. He’s been a friend of mine for a while. I pushed him in a big tub of water; it was fun. I loved the stunts.” The stunts were also a highlight for Tom Hardy, but for different reasons. “I got the pipe and slippers job,” he admitted happily of playing Eames, an expert at assuming others’ identities within dreams. “[Joseph Gordon-Levitt] took most of the weight of that. I got to sip tea and wear slippers.” When asked if he was harassed by fellow castmates for lounging around while they did all the work, Hardy said they hadn’t, but he was happy to relax a bit, having just finished the upcoming cage-fighting flick “Warrior.” And though veteran actor Ken Watanabe did his share of stunts for the film, he was more frightened by the risks the movie posed to his mental state. “I’m not a big dreamer, but after seeing the screening I had a nightmare,” Watanabe told MTV News. “I woke up and felt like I had [been the victim of] inception from Chris Nolan.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Inception.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
