True Or False: Did Monique Lose Out On Role In “Empire” Because Hollyweird Had Her Blackballed?

Mo’Nique Claims Lee Daniels Told Her Hollywood Blackballed Her For Not Playing The Game A few years ago Mo’Nique was riding high with a successful daytime talk show and an Oscar win under her belt, but in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter she reveals that she hasn’t had the easiest time getting roles since her win and that “Empire” creator Lee Daniels clued her in on why… Peep the excerpts below: How has the Oscar changed your life? Has it? I get asked that question a lot: How did the Oscar change my life? What it did was that it gave me a new reality. And it let me know that an award wasn’t going to change my life — that I had to be in control of changing my life. I’ll ask you: How do you think the Oscar was supposed to change my life? That it made everyone respect you more — that you’re not a comic who acts but an Oscar-winning dramatic actress. A force to be contended with. And how else do you think it should have changed? More choices, everyone offering you parts? What else do you think it should’ve changed? (Laughs.) You know what I’m looking for. I’m not sure — that it made you happier? Do you think it should have changed things financially? Yes. See? “Yes.” What I understood was that when I won that Oscar, things would change in all the ways you’re saying: It should come with more respect, more choices and more money. It should, and it normally does. Hattie (McDaniel) said, “After I won that award, it was as if I had done something wrong.” It was the same with me. I thought, once you won the award, that’s the top prize — and so you’re supposed to be treated as if you got the top prize. I got a phone call from Lee Daniels maybe six or seven months ago. And he said to me, “Mo’Nique, you’ve been blackballed.” And I said, “I’ve been blackballed? Why have I been blackballed?” And he said, “Because you didn’t play the game.” And I said, “Well, what game is that?” And he gave me no response. The next thing he said to me was, “Your husband is outbidding you.” But he never asked me what [salary] we were asking for. You know, my husband and I had to change things so we wouldn’t have to depend on [others]. So we do it independently. We’re very proud of taking the independent route, and we have a movie coming out on April 24 called Blackbird . What do you think Lee meant when he said that? That I was blackballed? And that your husband was “outbidding you.” What was he referring to? You know what I learned? Never to think what somebody else was thinking. That’s a question you would have to ask Lee Daniels.* There have been people that have said, “Mo’Nique, she can be difficult. Mo’Nique and her husband can be difficult.” They could probably be right. One of the networks said to [Lee] that I was “really difficult to work with.” And I said, “Well, that’s funny, because I’ve never even worked with them, but OK.” Whoever those people are who say, “Mo’Nique is difficult,” those people are either heartless, ruthless or treat people like they’re worthless. And that’s unacceptable. They’re set to say, “Mo’Nique is tactless, she’s tacky.” That’s why I have my beautiful husband, because he’s so full of tact, ’cause I’m a girl from Baltimore. I come from a blue-collar town — and being from that place, you learn not to let anybody take advantage of you. You don’t let people mistreat you. You stand up for what’s right. So I can’t answer why he said I was blackballed. There may be people that feel that way about me. But I respect everyone, from the homeless brother and sister on the street to the executive that sits in the highest office named President Barack Obama. I respect everyone — but we over-respect no one. WELL DAYUM… Props to her on that one. “We over-respect no one.” Does it surprise you to hear Mo’Nique has rubbed some people the wrong way? Mo’Nique also speaks on why she’s hasn’t worked with Lee Daniels since “Precious.” Check out her answer: Did he [Lee Daniels] approach you about maybe being on his hit Fox show Empire? Well, actually, I was offered the role in The Butler that Oprah Winfrey played. I was also approached by Empire to be on Empire. And I was also offered the role as Richard Pryor’s grandmother in [Daniels’ upcoming Pryor biopic]. Each of those things that he offered me was taken off the table. (Laughs.) They all just went away. But that’s just part of the business, you know? I can’t be upset at anybody, ’cause life is too good. It’s just what it is. But you were interested, and the offers suddenly evaporated? For each of the roles, [Lee] called me. He’s always approached me first, and I’m appreciative of it, because I think he is one of the most brilliant visionaries in writing and directing. I’ll say this: Whenever you do see me on TV again, or in the movies, you’ll know somebody played me fairly. People say to me sometimes, “Mo’Nique, you’re trying to be a mogul.” It’s like, honey, by no means am I trying to be a mogul — because mogul stands for “money obsessed guys (or girls), usually lonely.” (Laughs.) I don’t want to be a lonely mogul. No. Yikes. Do you think the lonely mogul comment is her way of firing shots at Oprah perhaps, or Tyler Perry? Do you think Mo’Nique would be good on “Empire”? Do you think she would have been better in “The Butler” than Oprah? Oh and if you think Lee Daniels was letting Mo have the last word you thought wrong. Hit the flip for his response. WENN

Selena Gomez Goes Topless For V Magazine & Talks Justin Bieber – “It Felt Like The World Was Against Us”

Selena Gomez Goes Topless For V Magazine And Talks Justin Bieber Relationship Despite the fact that they’re reportedly broken up right now, the Selena Gomez/Justin Bieber saga is one that seems to have no ending in sight. However, Selena sounds as if she might actually be done with her “first love” turned bad boy for good in the latest issue of V Magazine . via E! Online Selena Gomez knows how hard it is to have a successful relationship in the public eye. But in the new issue of V Magazine available Feb. 26, the 22-year-old opened up like never before about her past boyfriends, even if she doesn’t name any outright. “I think the next time [I have a boyfriend] will be much different…which will definitely not be anytime soon,” she shared with James Franco, who conducted the intimate interview. “That’s a growing up kind of thing. I was 18 years old, and it was my first love. The older I get, I’m guarding certain things more.” While she doesn’t address famous ex Justin Bieber by name, a timeline of their relationship definitely matches up with what the actress is revealing. “When you’re young and you’re being told so many different things…it almost felt like all we had was each other, like the world was against us, in a way,” she confessed. “It was really weird but it was incredible.” She added, “I would never take it back in a million years. You live and you learn, you know?” Living such a public life, however, did take a toll on the former Disney Channel actress. In fact, living under a microscope eventually caused some “anxiety” for the young star. “There were a few months where I was a little depressed, where I wouldn’t leave [my home] as much,” she revealed. “I think I drove myself crazy for a little bit. It was just easier to say, ‘Hey, do you mind running to the grocery store and picking some stuff up? I don’t want to get photographed.’” Although Selena never named lil Bieber Bad Azz by name, it’s definitely not hard to put two and two together. Do you think these two are done for good? Matrimony-dom: Keyshia Cole “Open” To Reconciliation With Dirty Dog Hubby Boobie Gibson… But Keeps A Pistol By Her Bed?!?!

Keyshia Cole Still Open To Working Things Out With Husband Boobie Gibson Looks like Khloe Kardashian-Odom isn’t the only celebrity who still has a soft spot with her dirty dog baller hubby! In a recent interview with HipHollywood.com Keyshia Cole revealed she’d still consider reconciling with her estranged husband Boobie Gibson. In March 2014, Keyshia announced that she and her NBA playing husband had decided to go their separate ways. This came after months of rumors speculating that Boobie had been unfaithful. Although, they are currently still separated, Cole tells HipHollywood that, because of their four year old son DJ, that could change. When asked if she had reached her breaking point with Gibson, she replied, “I don’t know if I’ve reached that point yet. I’m still trying to figure that out because I have a child, so, of course, he’s going to come before me”. But, even though the “Love” singer gave an “mmm hmm” when asked if a reconciliation was possible, she was also very honest when she said the thought of being back with Boobie scared her. “Hell yea … I got my pistol by my bed,” Keysh said with a laugh. The soulful singer is set to open up about her marriage and more as she allows reality TV cameras to follow her once again for her new show “Keyshia Cole: All In”. Aside from marital issues with Daniel, Cole will also attempt to solve some family issues with her mother and sisters, Neffe and Elite while the cameras roll. “All In” premieres on Tuesday, February 24th at 9:30P/8:30C on BET. Do you think Keyshia should still be forgiving toward Boobie? Will you be tuning in to her show? YouTube

Dentist On Speed Dial: Dame Dash Explains His Toothless BET Honors Appearance

Damon Dash Explains Missing Tooth Damon Dash turned heads at BET Honors last weekend. Not just because his presence was a surprise at the ceremony honoring Kanye West as a visionary after their famed falling out — but because one of his most prominent front teeth was noticeably absent from the black tie affair. Naturally, as the photo made the rounds, everyone wanted to know what happened to his grill. Dame’s explanation? He’s been getting heavy into acting and filmmaking , and the tooth was just a casualty of his craft. Check the video (tooth explanation around 2:30 mark): Sooo…he was so dedicated to his role that he pulled out a perfectly good tooth for it? Hmmm, we would think make-up, prosthetics, etc. could make him look “ugly” for a film… but if you say so Dame! ANYWAY, good of him to reconnect with Kanye for his big night! We can’t wait to see what he said at BET Honors… YouTube

Beware The Hive: Michelle Williams Claps Back At Mike Huckabee For Calling Beyonce A Paid Ho

Michelle Williams Defends Beyonce Against Mike Huckabee On The View Michelle Williams had to speak up for Queen Bey once again this week — this time against republican attention seeker politician Mike Huckabee. The Beygency’s VP of defense swung into action while guest-hosting The View on Thursday, calling the possible presidential hopeful to carpet for his comments comparing Jay Z & Beyonce’s marriage and music success to some sort of pimp & ho exchange . Via MailOnline : Michelle Williams came to the defense of her Destiny’s Child bandmate Beyoncé while co-hosting Thursday’s episode of The View. Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee had slammed the 33-year-old pop diva for her sexually-assertive demeanor in his book God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy. “I’ve had so much uproar over half a page in my book,” the 59-year-old presidential hopeful said. “I say she’s the most amazing singer, great set of pipes, unbelievable dancer, and she doesn’t need to do songs like Partition and Drunk in Love in order to be an amazing and effective talent.” Then the 34-year-old gospel singer – who’s known the 7/11 songstress since 1999 – set the Republican politician straight. “As someone who has definitely come up in a group with her, has seen her hard work and who she is, I just feel like that album and those songs, it was that one moment where she decided to probably do some songs she has always wanted to do,” the Grammy winner explained to Huckabee. “To shed that ‘I’m a good girl’ [image]. She had some freedom and she owned it and she took it. I was definitely offended – I’m not the Carter spokesperson – but to hear some of those comments that you said, I thought were very, very low.” Poor Michelle never gets to talk about herself, huh? What do you think BOSSIP fam — did she do a good job defending the queen?

Wigging Out: Kevin Hart Tells The Hollywood Reporter He’s Not An Angry Black Man, “I’m Happy” [Video]

Kevin Hart has been in the headlines a lot lately , mainly because of the hacked Sony email where an exec called him a ho basically , for wanting more money to tweet about his projects. He talks about those comments as well as his upbringing, his thoughts on the Bill Cosby controversy and not being political or an angry black man. We culled the best excerpts for you. Check them out below via The Hollywood Reporter On his goals: Forget any notions that Hart, 35, isn’t serious about his work. His aims are great, his ambitions unlimited. He wants to equal his heroes (Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock) and dwarf them by building an empire even larger than theirs. “I want to be a mogul, like Oprah or Jay Z or Tyler Perry,” he says. His 2012 tour, Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, was seen in 10 countries and 80 cities, and sold more than 540,000 tickets, making it one of the most successful comedy tours to date (he also does many dozens of stand-up performances every year in smaller venues). Hart also sold out Madison Square Garden (only the sixth comedian ever to do so) and earned more than $1 million in Los Angeles on one evening alone. These tours are funded by Hart, too. “I invest in myself,” he says. “I spent $750,000 on [the 2011] Laugh at My Pain [tour], and it did $15 million. I spent $2.5 million on Let Me Explain, and it did $32 million. I’m about to spend maybe $4 million on this next one [What Next?], and the goal is to get to $100 million.” On Being Called a “Ho” By Sony’s Clint Culpepper: Hart swats away critiques, even when they come from his occasional boss, Sony’s Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper, who, referring to Hart’s desire to boost his $3 million salary, noted in a hacked email made public, “I’m not saying he’s a wh***, but he’s a wh***.” Hart shot back on Instagram: “I worked very hard to get where I am today. I look at myself as a brand and because of that I will never allow myself to be taken advantage of. I OWN MY BRAND … I MAKE SMART DECISIONS FOR MY BRAND … which is why I’m able to brush ignorance off of my shoulder and continue to move forward.” A month after that volatile exchange, Hart takes a more muted view. “I’ve talked to him,” he says of Culpepper (who did not respond to a request for comment). “Clint called right after. It’s not like I wanted to challenge him — that’s just how he talks. He did [apologize], but there was no need. When you negotiate, you say whatever you say.” He adds: “Nothing affected me. It’s very hard to put me in a negative position, man. I’m happy. And I’ll continue to be happy.” Happiness isn’t always the greatest source of laughter, of course, and one wonders whether Hart is being disingenuous when he says he has “no demon. I’m not an angry person. I left those years behind.” On Social Issues: Expletives pepper his routine, but he’s never salacious, never tawdry and never makes comments about women or gays that might offend some or even all. He seems almost genetically inoffensive, in fact, and avoids anything controversial, from the death of Eric Garner to Ferguson, Mo. “I’m not interested in politics,” he shrugs. On Bill Cosby: Downstairs, giant portraits of the comedians he most admires — Cosby, Rock, Murphy, Richard Pryor, Martin Lawrence and Dave Chappelle — line the walls. I ask if he’s thinking of getting rid of Cosby in the wake of allegations about the 77-year-old’s conduct. “I’m not going to take the picture down,” he says. “The picture serves a purpose for me. These were the men who built a legacy doing what they love to do, which is telling jokes.” Does he think Cosby is guilty? “Right now, it’s a lot of speculation,” he says. “All I can do is just say my prayers, and my wishes go out to all of the women who are potentially involved. His personal life has nothing to do with me. I can’t control it. I will never try. It doesn’t stop me from being an admirer of his work. His work and his personal life are two separate things.” On Discrimination In Hollywood: He doesn’t dwell on prejudice, or wonder if he might have had more opportunity if he were white. “That’s not for me to say, because I’m not white,” he says. He agrees with his mentor, Top Five co-star Rock, who lambasted the industry’s insistence that African-American performers “cross over” and find a white audience in a recent essay for THR. Hart insists he doesn’t get hung up on such things. (Said Rock: “If we’re going to just be honest and count dollars and seats and not look at skin color, Kevin Hart is the biggest comedian in the world. If Kevin Hart is playing 40,000 seats in a night and Jon Stewart is playing 3,000, the fact that Jon Stewart’s 3,000 are white means Kevin has to cross over? That makes no sense.”) “The point he was making was very valid,” says Hart. “It’s always about us crossing over. You never hear about it going the other way. You look at concerts and the touring industry, and the people who buy those tickets are urban crowds. It’s crazy the numbers I’ve done on tour: You’re talking about a guy who does 40,000 to 50,000 people a weekend. What he said, I agree with 110 percent.” Still, he continues: “I don’t feed into the race game. I don’t give it that much thought. I never have and never will.” “You know, a lot of people make it and then stop,” he says. “Why? When I look at Eddie Murphy, when I look at Will Smith, when I look at Denzel Washington, when I look at what all those people have achieved, why would I stop when you can keep going and keep achieving? There’s so much more that I can do. And I’m getting close. So why stop?” Do you think Kevin Hart is winning right now because he plays it so safe? We couldn’t help but think of fellow comedian, and sometimes critic Mike Epps saying the wrong blacks are getting opportunities. Kevin isn’t an angry black man, he’s not political and he shies away from saying anything controversial. Is he playing it too safe? Not being interested in politics is one thing, but not speaking up on issues that directly effect so many people who are his audience seems kinda cold, nah? Check out a video THR posted below:

Yuck, Daddy!!! Father Arrested After Throwing Weed & Alcohol-Fueled Lingerie “Playboy Party” For Daughter’s 18th Bday

Father Throws Daughter Playboy-Themed Bash For 18th Birthday A San Diego dad is behind bars today after throwing a Playboy Mansion-themed bash — complete with drugs, liquor, and lingerie — for his own daughter on her 18th birthday . Apparently he thought it was all approriate since he was there to “chaperone” the debauchery… Via KTLA : A father was facing charges Wednesday in San Diego County after throwing a “Playboy Mansion” themed party for his daughter’s 18th birthday. As many as 200 people attended the party at the home dubbed “Liv’s Playboy Mansion” last Friday night, most of them underage, according to KGTV in San Diego. Pictures posted to social media by some partygoers showed teenagers wearing lingerie and bunny ears including the birthday girl, Olivia Lake. Deputies responding to complaints from neighbors found two unconscious, intoxicated boys in the house, the station reported. The girl’s father, attorney Jeff Lake, was at the home when deputies arrived, according to San Diego County Sheriff’s officials. What kind of father not only approves of his daughter running around drunk, high, and nearly naked with a bunch of horny teenage boys…but fronts the money for the supplies and send out invites?!? Ummm, Huh? Kendrick Lamar Says Iggy Azalea Is “Doing Her Thing,” Wishes Macklemore Success In Billboard Mag

Kendrick Lamar Chats Iggy Azalea In Billboard Magazine Unlike several of his counterparts , Kendrick Lamar has no beef with the fair-skinned rappers accused of “stealing Hip Hop” over the last two years. The West Coast rap god had nothing but positive vibes when asked about Aussie ATL chick Iggy Azalea and “Grammy-Bandit” Macklemore when he sat down with Billboard : Without blinking, Kendrick Lamar took on everyone from Drake to J. Cole to A$AP Rocky with his gauntlet-throwing verse on Big Sean’s “Control.” But that was in 2013 — and on wax. When the Compton MC spoke with Gavin Edwards for Billboard’s latest cover story, he wasn’t looking to knock any other rappers in casual conversation. Even Iggy Azalea — who has become a popular punching bag for Azealia Banks, J. Cole and Twitter in general — gets a pass from K. Dot. “She’s doing her thing,” Lamar tells Billboard. “Let her. People have to go through trials and tribulations to get where they at. Do your thing, continue to rock it, because obviously God wants you here.” Iggy’s The New Classic is up for best rap album at the Grammys this year, an award that Kendrick’s good kid, m.A.A.d city lost to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ The Heist in 2014. Some are predicting the widely scoffed-at Macklemore victory will repeat in 2015 via Azalea, but Lamar has no ill will toward either. “I appreciate [the Grammys] recognizing me,” Lamar says. “That’s not my overall goal… It’s best to just go and enjoy the festivities.” As for Macklemore — who texted an apology to Kendrick after “robbing” him — Kendrick calls him “a genuine dude” and adds, “I wish him much success.” It’s not like either one of those artists could ever dare swerve into Kendrick’s lane…so it makes sense that he takes no issue with either of them.
