Heck No, Them Maid Roles Gotta Go! Just in case you didn’t believe her the first time she said it, Viola Davis is speaking up LOUDLY about how modern cinema needs to portray black people — as something other than maids and slaves! Via Salon.com : Viola Davis, nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe for her role as a maid in the Civil Rights Era-set movie, “The Help,” will most likely never play a maid again. She recently told CNN, “I’m tired of that,” explaining, “Me and Octavia [Spencer], Aunjanue Ellis, Roslyn Ruff – we all played maids in ‘The Help’ and it was fabulous. It’s a fabulous story because we were personalized and all of those things, but I think that people need to see an African American in the 21st century integrated in the life of this town and family who’s not in servitude.” Except that in “Beautiful Creatures,” the book that Davis’s next movie is based upon, her character Amma is, again, a maid. She told the Hollywood Reporter that “[Director] Richard LaGravenese forbade us from reading the book. He said, “Do not touch the book.” (Naturally, Davis then got the book). “I read half of it and then I put it down because Amma is a maid, and I just said, ‘Ok, there’s nothing I can learn from this.’ ” But then LaGravenese changed the character for the film adaptation, who became a hybrid of Amma and a local librarian who has magical powers. Davis called it “a total reimagining of the character,” and said that even though it veers from the original text, the change makes sense in the greater context of the movie: “I’m going to be confident and bold and say I like it because, listen, I understand and I respect the book and I think the book is wonderful but this is 2013 and I think that when black people are woven into the lives of characters in 2013, then I think they play other roles than maids. I think that that needs to be explored and I hope that the audience is willing to suspend their disbelief and embrace what Richard LaGravenese has given them.” The movie explores the budding romance between Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich) and Lena Duchaness (Alice Englert), a mysterious newcomer with supernatural powers, set in a fictional South Carolina town. So basically she’s a maid who got promoted to a librarian with magic powers? AND they still made her wear dashikis — so is that really any better? We realize this is no joking matter and we’re glad Viola Davis has finally come to her senses. Black actresses have played enough maids for all time. They’ve also played enough hoes and dope dealers. When will Hollywood get the memo though?
Pope Benedict XVI is on his way out , does that mean this brother is next in line for the papalcy? Via NYDailyNews reports : With Pope Benedict XVI’s bombshell announcement Monday that he plans to step down, all eyes are on his potential successors, including one that may become the first black pope: Cardinal Peter Turkson. The Roman Catholic Cardinal from Ghana, the current president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, is among the leading candidates to assume the title of pontiff as it is rumored the Vatican may look outside Europe for its next leader. Turkson, 64, was born in Wassaw Nsuta in western Ghana on Oct. 11, 1948 to a Methodist mother and Catholic father. He entered the seminary as a child and moved to New York to study at St. Anthony-on-Hudson Seminary in Rensselaer before he was ordained as a priest in 1975. In October 1992, Pope John Paul II named Turkson the Archbishop of Cape Coast, the former capital of Ghana. Turkson served as president of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference from 1997 to 2005 and during that time, was appointed the first-ever cardinal from Ghana. “We love him,” Archbishop Gabriel Charles Palmer-Buckle, metropolitan archbishop of Accra, the current capital of Ghana, told the Guardian. “For Ghanaians he was our first cardinal, and to be made cardinal in his 50s was a big feather in our cap.” In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Turkson the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, a high-profile position that sent him around the world for mediation talks. The position put Turkson near tthe top of the list of potential papal successors. Bookmaker Paddy Power has odds of Turkson becoming the pope at 3-1 — a prediction that is not entirely out of the blue for the cardinal, who acknowledged the possibility of a black pope in a press conference in 2009. “Why not?” Turkson said, arguing that when you agree to become a priest, you must be open to the idea of becoming a Pope. “All of that is part of the package.” Turkson added that the time was especially ripe given the election of President Barack Obama. “And now it is Obama of the United States,” he said. “And if by divine providence — because the church belongs to God — if God would wish to see a black man also as Pope, thanks be to God.” If elected, Turkson would also be the first non-European to serve since the Great Western Schism. Turkson would not be the first pope to hail from Africa. Some scholars believe that Victor I, who served from 189 to 199, was the first black pope, the Telegraph reported. Information from the time, however, is not conclusive. Turkson is not the only potential papal candidate outside of Europe. Other possible successors include Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria and Cardinal Mark Ouellet of Canada. SMH @ bookies taking bets on the papalcy. That ain’t very Christian of them. AP

Fox News Journalist Slams Media For Not Addressing Racism In Politics Fox News journalist and former NPR employee Juan Williams recently took the time to do something we rarely see done on the often one-sided network: speak out against racism in politics . Williams held nothing back in a recent piece putting the media on blast for overly vilifying black Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas after he recently made a joke to his colleagues in court, while over looking the far more blatantly racist actions of other politicians on a regular basis. via Fox News Last week during an oral argument, Justice Thomas appeared to make a joke to his fellow members of the Supreme Court. His words were not completely audible to the people in the court. When it was noted that the defendant’s counsel went to Yale, Thomas’s alma mater, Justice Thomas apparently said something to this effect: If the defendant’s lawyer was a Yale Law graduate maybe he didn’t have adequate counsel. Ha! Ha! The idea that black people – liberal or conservative – are not allowed to speak out as independent thinkers is apparently a truth for a lot of liberals and conservatives. Blacks are supposed to stay in neatly defined political boxes. However, as the never-ending assault on Justice Thomas’s integrity shows, the deepest vein of intolerance is to be found on the Left for minority conservatives. Isn’t about time for someone in the mainstream media called out the haters and the race hustlers? Williams then went on to assert that black people were singled out for voting President Obama into office in overwhelming numbers, while little attention was given to the fact that a large majority of white people also voted against President Obama. He then shared his own personal struggles with being a black conservative. The fact is that despite the caricatures of black political thought there is a wide variety of opinion among blacks just as there is among whites, Hispanics and Asians. Yes, it is true that more than 90 percent of black Americans voted for President Obama. It is also true that close to 60 percent of white voted against President Obama. But that is not reflective of the variety of political views of black or white Americans. When I ask why civil rights leaders fail to take on gangster rappers who glamorize violence I was labeled as ‘Not-Authentically-Black.’ As one NPR executive put it to me – just before I was fired from NPR – the old guard of white liberals at NPR did not appreciate a black man with conservative social views and some conservative friends. When will the mainstream media call attention to this type of ‘intolerance’ that is absolutely racist thinking at its worst? Williams points out what so many people have been questioning throughout much of Obama’s presidency, and before. Racism in politics alive and well…..and the call for attention to this topic is long over due.
TJ Jackson Says He’s Struggling To Take Care Of Michael’s Kids Earlier last fall, Tito Jackson’s eldest son TJ stepped in and became the legal guardian of his late uncle Michael Jackson’s three kids to give them some peace and a break from the non-stop family feud that was taking place over Michael’s estate. The family members and reps for MJ’s estate felt that TJ having the kids was the best thing, but now he says he needs some funds to effectively continue his daddy daycare duties. via TMZ TJ Jackson cannot continue to serve as a surrogate parent to Michael Jackson’s 3 kids without getting some compensation, so the Executors of MJ’s Estate are asking the judge to give TJ a reasonable amount of money to keep the ship afloat. The Executors filed legal docs — obtained by TMZ — in which they say TJ has been extremely devoted to Paris, Prince and Blanket since MJ’s death. TJ — who is now a co-guardian along with Katherine Jackson — spends 40 hours a week caring for the 3 kids. The Executors say it’s been a hardship for TJ — who is married with 3 kids of his own. Although he’s been a co-guardian since July, he hasn’t received a single penny for his services. The Executors are asking the judge to allow them to pay TJ $9,000 a month, retroactive to July. They add, the way it’s going now, TJ may not be able to continue, so compensation is essential. Sounds like a pretty good deal to us. If this were any other family member, we might be skeptical of them getting the kids and then asking for money, but all things considered, this sounds pretty legit. Especially since Auntie Janet and her niece Paris might not do too well under one roof ….
Can you blame them? Kimmy Cakes’ youngest sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner dish about their “hard knock” reality life in a brand new interview with GLAMOUR magazine . Peep the quotes below: Glamour: Your family leads such a public life. Is that a good thing? Kylie: Our family is closer because of the show. And when we are older, we’ ll have the memories on tape. If some of those moments hadn’t been filmed, I wouldn’t remember them! Kendall: We appreciate everything that we have, but we don’t remember what it’s like to be normal kids who aren’t harassed by the paparazzi. I hate that. We’re underage girls. I don’t want to be followed by random men I don’t know. It can also be hard to deal with other kids who are jealous or mean. I can’t post a picture on Instagram without being criticized. Kylie: No one really knows what we are like. People read about us on Twitter, but they don’t know what we do all day long. We don’t really have privacy, but we have an aspect that people don’t know about. Glamour: What do you learn from each of your sisters? Kendall: If we’re fighting, we call Khloé. She’s our peacemaker. Kourtney keeps us down-to-earth. Kylie: Kim teaches us how to deal with the spotlight. Glamour: Between your brothers—Brody, Brandon, Burt, and Rob—and your sisters’ partners, Lamar, Scott, and Kanye, there are a lot of men in your lives. Are they protective? Kylie: Rob checks on me at least three times a day, and Lamar wants to meet any guy we’re talking to. Just yesterday Scott was going over the kind of guy I should date. Glamour: We have to ask: Do you ever think about the fact that your last name isn’t Kardashian? Kendall: We’re full-throttle Jenners! We don’t have any desire to be Kardashians. Kylie: All that matters is that we’re a family. We guess there are a lot of benefits to being Kendall and Kylie and not being Kardashians — like for example, they’re not hairy Armenians like Kim. Riiiiiiiight??? We almost felt bad for Kendall for a brief moment as she lamented the trials of Instagram haters and being followed by the paparazzi. Do you think Kris Jenner was wrong to push her minor daughters into the spotlight at such an early age? Or do you think they’ve benefitted from fame more than it has hurt them?

Would you say this broad has a “youthful appearance?” Just sayin’ cuz Nicole Kidman ain’t the most bangin white jawn in our eyes, but for whatever reason a lot of people think she’s had plastic surgery to make her so pretty. Via US Weekly reports : Despite rumors to the contrary, Nicole Kidman has always insisted that she has never undergone plastic surgery, but in a new interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the actress does cop to one anti-aging cheat: Botox. “No surgery for me,” she told the paper when asked about how she maintains her youthful appearance. “I did try Botox, unfortunately, but I got out of it and now I can finally move my face again.” Kidman, 45, admitted that getting the age-defying injections was an “unfortunate move,” but said that she is happily now back to being “completely natural.” “I wear sunscreen, I don’t smoke and I take care of myself, and I am proud to say that,” she proclaimed. “Anybody can do anything to themselves — I don’t judge — but personally, I believe in being physically fit. That’s how I was raised.” The Academy Award-winning actress similarly defended her appearance back in 2011, insisting to Marie Claire UK that she prefers her own natural look, signs of aging and all. “Well, I move my forehead, I frown … I tried it, I didn’t like it, so I’ve gone back to my own forehead,” she said to the magazine at the time. “But I’ve never had plastic surgery on my face. People say I have but I haven’t.” Wamp Wamp… But at least she’s not out here promoting getting knifed up! WENN
