Lady Gaga ‘Has Full Control,’ Akon Says

‘Kon was ‘fully involved’ in her first two albums, but now ‘creatively, 100 percent, it’s all Gaga,’ he tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rob Markman Lady Gaga Photo: WireImage Over the course of her ever-evolving career, Lady Gaga’s longtime boss, Akon , has always been by Gaga’s side as she reincarnated herself from disco-ball-wearing dance princess to couture-sporting pop demi-goddess. Now that Mother Monster is several years and millions of albums sold into her career, Akon has stepped back a bit and changed his role in the Haus of Gaga, giving the singer more control over what she does with her career. “So the way it works is, Gaga’s on Kon Live/Streamline, which is Vincent Herbert, and it’s distributed through Interscope,” he explained to MTV News. “And the first two albums, we were fully involved in everything creative when it comes to Gaga, and then, as she grows, she becomes more in tune with herself [and] what she wants to do. “Now she has full control over her project, period,” he continued. “Everything you see of Gaga now is all from her brain … and our job is just to make sure whatever she’s thinking we can make into reality. So I guess more so with the approval processes and everything like that, we still do what we do, but creatively, 100 percent, it’s all Gaga, and Vince does all the day-to-day stuff relating to Gaga.” Then whatever’s about to go down in Gaga’s upcoming “Marry the Night” video certainly got the A-OK from Akon. The singer was spotted in New York City filming a clip for the fifth single from her chart-topping Born This Way. What are you expecting from the “Marry the Night” video? Let us know in the comments! Johnny Depp Calls His ‘Dark Shadows’ Vampire ‘Classic’

‘These vampire movies have come out, and you go, ‘Well, nobody looks like a vampire, man,’ ‘ Depp tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Johnny Depp Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images Anytime Johnny Depp and Tim Burton get together for a film, fans know to expect the unexpected, particularly with their retellings of familiar stories like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Alice in Wonderland” and their next highly anticipated project, the big-screen adaptation of ’60s vampire soap “Dark Shadows.” The fan fervor surrounding “Shadows” hit a high point recently when photos leaked of a heavily made-up Depp in his full Barnabas Collins costume , followed by the production’s first official photo of the entire cast posed family portrait-style and Burton in action on set . When MTV News caught up with Depp recently as he promoted “The Rum Diary,” which hits theaters October 28, we asked what inspired the highly stylized look of the character. “The memory that I have of watching the show as a kid, Jonathan Frid and what he did with that character was the main inspiration, for sure,” he said of the actor who originated the role of Barnabas. “But also the idea of, over the years, these vampire movies have come out and vampire TV shows and stuff like that, and you go, ‘Well, nobody looks like a vampire, man. What happened?’ “I adored Dracula, still do. I adored [everyone] from Bela Lugosi to Christopher Lee. I adore Nosferatu, [played by] Max Schrek. I adore all those wonderful sort-of horror films. And it was an opportunity really, an opportunity to sort of go into what really doesn’t exist [onscreen] so much anymore, which is classic monster makeup and a classic monster character,” Depp explained. “So that was really the inspiration Tim and I talked about.” Depp and Burton’s “Dark Shadows,” which also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz, Jackie Earle Hayley and Eva Green, will be released May 11, 2012. Taio Cruz Wants To Work With Kings Of Leon

Collabo king tells MTV News he was starstruck when Kylie Minogue recorded at his house for ‘Higher.’ By Gil Kaufman Taio Cruz Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ FilmMagic It’s already been a pretty spectacular year for Taio Cruz . He scored a breakthrough U.S. hit with “Break Your Heart” (featuring Ludacris), hooked up with Ke$ha for “Dirty Picture” and then set up shop near the top of the charts most of the summer into the fall with the unstoppable single “Dynamite.” Along the way, he’s recorded another upcoming single with Travie McCoy, “Higher” (which will feature Kylie Minogue in the U.K.), and he helped present an award alongside Nicki Minaj at Sunday night’s American Music Awards , where he came in with modest expectations for a win . Always thinking about his next move, Cruz is on the hunt for new collaborators, and on the AMA red carpet , he spilled some details on what he looks for in a musical match. “Someone who’s going to make an impact, something the fans are going to find a fun collaboration, something interesting,” he told MTV News. Despite his eclectic slate of collaborators, Cruz said he doesn’t feel like he needs to be a chameleon to shape himself to the singers he works with. “I think you just have to be nice,” he smiled. “People respond pretty well to nice. And musically it helps that I’m a producer and I can figure out ways of moving songs around.” Though he’s a veteran producer, Cruz admitted to getting a bit starstruck when Minogue came to his home studio to lay down some vocals. “I was just like, ‘Wow, Kylie Minogue is in my house.’ … It was very surreal.” Keen to keep his finger on the pulse, Cruz has also been hunkering down with Swedish House Mafia on some new tracks. “They’re so much fun,” he said of the crew. His ultimate dream musical match is one that might surprise you, though. “I would say I would have to call Kings of Leon,” he said of the arena-rocking Southern family band. “Because they’re incredible.” Who would you like to see Taio Cruz hook up with next? Chloe Moretz Is Thankful For ‘Kick-Ass,’ Hit-Girl Groupies And Brad Pitt

And we’re thankful for her, one of our favorite actors of 2010. By Josh Horowitz Chloe Moretz Photo: Mike Coppola/ FilmMagic At the beginning of this year, MTV News tagged Chloe Moretz , a little-known young actor whose largest role at that point was in “(500) Days of Summer,” as one of the actors in our “10 to Watch in 2010” series. She didn’t disappoint. The 13-year-old blew audiences away as the sword-wielding, bullet-taking badass Hit-Girl in “Kick-Ass.” She followed up that comic book adaptation with an intense and mature performance in “Let Me In,” in which she played a troubled vampire yearning for a human connection. It’s no surprise, then, that we’ve now named Moretz as one of the folks we’re most thankful for in 2010. MTV News recently sat down for a chat with the teen star, who talked about meeting overly enthusiastic fans, how her family has helped her career and one unforgettable encounter with Brad Pitt. MTV : You were one of our stars to watch in 2010, and now Thanksgiving time is rolling around very soon. Every year we select the actors we’re most thankful for, and you’re one of the actors we’re most thankful for in 2010. Chloe Moretz : Really? Wowers! Yayers! Yay-zies? MTV : Does it feel like it’s been a big year for you? Moretz : It’s been huge. “Kick-Ass” and then [“Let Me In”] — it’s been absolutely insane. MTV : What’s been the highlight? Moretz : “Kick-Ass,” how big it got. The sheer thought of how much work I put into it and it finally getting so huge. That was insane. I was flabbergasted. MTV : Were there any moments at red carpets or premieres where you thought, “Wow, this is crazy”? Moretz : A guy at the London premiere, he had a Hit-Girl costume on — a pink wig and everything. That struck home. That leaves a memory. He was chic. MTV : Have you run into some fans of yours, or fellow actors, who have come to you and said how impressed they are by your work? Moretz : Brad Pitt at the afterparty, he was like, “I really like the role of Hit-Girl.” And I was like, “What’d Angie think?” No, it was amazing. It was really cool to see someone who is so big and is such a phenomenal actor to recognize my work. MTV : Who or what are you most thankful for in 2010? Moretz : My family, of course. Without my family, where would I be? That my mom said yes when I was 6 begging her to let me semi-start the business. Where would I be without my brother Trevor? He’s my acting coach. Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it’s about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Enjoy exclusive interviews with our winners all week long. Check out everything we’ve got on “Kick-Ass” and “Let Me In.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
