Eminem Producer Alex Da Kid Wants To ‘Bounce Around Different Genres’

British producer has had a string of success with big records by Em, Nicki Minaj and B.o.B. By Jayson Rodriguez Alex Da Kid Photo: MTV News Producer Alex Da Kid knows that what appears to be his “breakout” run — with three scorchers in Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie,” Nicki Minaj’s “Massive Attack” and B.o.B’s “Airplanes” — is really him having the good fortune of multiple labels releasing his productions around the same time. He admits, though, that his phone has been ringing more lately as a result. The British producer started out as an intern at MTV overseas before he realized he had a different life calling. He flirted with FruityLoops , crafting beats he called “the worst,” and went to school to study audio technology. One of his teachers was already well-connected in the music industry and helped mentor the budding producer. He hesitates to describe his sound, saying he wants to work with a range of artists. He does, however, own up to not being the best musician just yet. “I play guitar really badly, and I play keyboard really badly,” he told MTV News, laughing. “I’m like a bad musician. I grew up in London, and it’s like, New York, there’s a lot of different people and different cultures. I grew up around a lot of that. And my music is a reflection of that. I’m working on a lot of rock projects at the moment. I work on pop. I work on grimy hip-hop and everything in between. I don’t really box myself in. I wanna be like a new version of Quincy Jones, where I can bounce around in different genres and still be credible and still make it work. “I want all the money,” he added, playfully. Currently, Alex Da Kid is in the studio with Rob Thomas and Rihanna and submitting beats to the Clipse for their next project. He also recently inked his first artist, Skyler Grey, who helped him pen Rihanna’s chorus for Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie.” What do you think of Alex Da Kid’s work so far? Eminem’s ‘Cinderella Man’ Has A ‘Stadium Feel,’ Script Shepherd Says

The 25-year-old newcomer produced and sings the chorus on the Recovery track. By Shaheem Reid Script Shepard Photo: MTV News Script Shepherd struck gold on his first try. The first time the 25-year-old producer/performer got one of his tracks on an album was also the first time he got to sing a guest hook on an album. Amazingly, that album happens to be one of the biggest releases of the year: Eminem’s Recovery. Shepherd produced and sings the chorus on Slim Shady’s “Cinderella Man.” Is the title of the song inspired by the 2005 Russell Crowe film? “Not really,” Shepherd smiled. “I liked the film. But at the time, I was going through a hard time. My brother had just passed away. “It’s a stadium feel, an anthem,” he added about the song. “Like marching, marching towards something. The sound is big, the message is big on the record. It’s about just coming from nothing, not doubting yourself. It sounds like you’re marching towards a goal. The guitars are rifting, and it has little bells keeping it melodic. It’s a strong record that’s motivating. And Em did something motivating with it. I just wanted to have people feel like they’re moving with the record, have a ‘Rocky’ feel. It sounded more authentic to have people feel like they were stomping in the record.” Script said the chorus is a little abstract, but it’s meant to inspire. “The hook says, ‘If I had a time machine, I’d be a Cinderella man/ Music is my time machine/ Call me Cinderella man,’ ” Shepherd said. “Basically, it’s like, music can allow you to do all types of things. You can change the world with music. You can go back and enlighten and move people forward just with sounds and connection. Music is a time machine.” Em chose the song through Shady A&R rep Riggs Morales, the same guy who played Em 50 Cent’s early mixtapes before the Queens kingpin was signed to Shady/Aftermath. Script and his team sent the track with the hook to Em’s camp, but Shepherd didn’t hear the finished version until a few weeks ago, when Recovery leaked. “I was in the bathroom,” he said. “My wife called me, and I thought it was a bug [in the house]. She was like, ‘You gotta come now.’ It was amazing. I was in the house with my family. My kids were going to sleep. I woke them up. … It was such a tight-knit project. I didn’t have a copy of it. I heard it on the Internet like everybody else, and I was the most excited person in the world, besides my wife.” Script’s love of music has been a lifelong affair. In his native Toronto, his dad would play soul music by Otis Redding. Script moved to Brooklyn as a toddler, where he would get his hip-hop influence. Late, great record executive Shakir Stewart signed Script to Arista Records when he was 18 as part of the R&B group Brooklyn. The five-man team would later change their name to Roswell, but their success was not in the cards. Arista folded, and so did the group. Script has stayed in the industry, writing songs for artists such as Sammy and submitting tracks to superstars like Usher. He went in the lab with Usher, just a week after his older brother was killed in the streets. “Foolishness,” he said of how his brother died. “He got stabbed, one time, in front of my mother. That was a hard, hard time. But I know he’s happy with what I’ve done. Just taking that experience and not retaliating and killing somebody. … A week later, I was in the studio with Usher. I was in the studio with Usher watching him, then I’d go in the bathroom and cry like a baby. But it’s not what you go through; it’s how you go through it.” Script is currently seeking a record deal for his solo career. “Me, as a solo artist, Script Shepherd is just a lover not a fighter,” he said. “I will fight for love, but I’m not a fighter. I will go to all lengths to make sure people in the world love each other. Whether I have string guitar or raps, it’s all gonna be moving in the same direction. Thanks to artists like Drake, the world is more open to somebody singing and rapping now. It’s time to bring a message with it. Sometimes the music gets lost in the message. Leaked tracks from Eminem’s Recovery album continue to surface online, despite its official release date still being two weeks away. That sucks for Eminem. Or does it? Conventional wisdom suggests leaks hinder sales, but Em’s new songs and collaborations with Rihanna, Lil Wayne and others are drawing raves. Gaining probably the most online traction of the leaked tracks – a bunch of which are still up as of right now – is “Love the Way You Lie,” featuring Rihanna. Seeing as the song chronicles a destructive, abusive and violent relationship (cough, Chris Brown ), it’s tailor-made for tabloid fodder as well as a solid track. Rick Ross Was ‘In Awe’ Of Jay-Z During Teflon Don Studio Session

By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Rick Ross says it was a process — an extremely entertaining process — that led up to the night Jay-Z recorded his verse for a yet-untitled record from Ross’ upcoming LP, Teflon Don. The rapper went to the last stop on Hov’s Blueprint 3 tour in Las Vegas and collaborated on a song he described as an atomic bomb. “You party in Tao [in Vegas] till 2 or 3 or 4 in the morning,” Ross said of how they kick off a session. “Twenty-five bottles of Ace [Of Spades]; 7 a.m., you was just hitting the crap tables. It’s 9-ish, 10-ish, so focused though [once you go to the studio]. That was the beauty in our bond — our respect for one another. I don’t just e-mail records or have somebody drop off a beat. “I was a roadie on the Blueprint 3 tour for a few dates,” he explained off tagging along with Hov. “It started off in St. Louis. I was just messing with everybody, kicking it with everybody, letting Jay hear my ideas and concepts. When you get the deluxe version of this album, we documented when I played the record. I played the track and my first verse,” Ross recalled. “I put in the PS3 behind the stage. “Played it, [Jay] listened to it,” he continued. “We played it, backed it up, played it again. Played it, backed it up, played it again. Backed it up, and he spit his verse. It’s gonna be magic for people to see Jay do his “Rain [Man]” when he’s rubbing his head, like he puling his rhymes outta his mind. Just to see somebody come up with a verse that potent in less than two or three minutes … ’cause it was just a snippet. The beat may have played for a minute and a half and started over,” a process Ross says was repeated a few times as Jay composed. “He had his 16, an idea for the chorus. Trey Songz, all of us standing around in awe.” Ross said he’s still shocked that Jay came with a verse so fresh in such a short amount of time. “It’s most definitely a surreal feeling,” the Bawse added. “Something that’s real hard to describe. When you have that camaraderie with someone, and you all continue to raise the bar somewhat — it blowed the whole room. Shout out to [Jay-Z cohorts] O.G. Juan, Tah Tah. One of the words I said in my verse, it triggered something in [Jay’s] mind. He had so many things to say about it. The content of the record, it’s gonna answer a lot of things that’s been circulating. It’s going to be moving.” The Miami native said the song doesn’t have a title yet because he wants to be very deliberate about naming what he thinks will be an atomic record. “It’s still untitled. I have two or three ideas. But you know, the chorus is so powerful. It’s two or three words that’s said, I just haven’t decided. ‘We Are The World: 25 For Haiti’ Video Premieres During Olympics Opening Ceremony

The new incarnation of the 1985 song sticks closely to the arrangement of the original, but the cast is much larger and, of course, much more contemporary. On television, the song was introduced by a message from original “We Are the World” principals Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones, who urged viewers to contribute via www.World25.org , iTunes or by texting “World” to 50555. A tightly edited version of the song was aired on Friday night, but the long version is available now on iTunes. That version is introduced by Jamie Foxx, who sets the scene, talking about the original recording and then the new version, the video of which was directed by “Crash” director Paul Haggis. “Do more than just watch,” Foxx says. “Whatever you have, no matter how big or how small, it all counts.” The video features footage from the song’s recording session intercut with scenes of rebuilding efforts in Haiti. Justin Bieber opens , singing Lionel Richie’s verse from the original, and is quickly followed by Nicole Scherzinger and Jennifer Hudson singing together, then Sugarland singer Jennifer Nettles, Josh Groban, and then a footage of Michael Jackson from the original recording superimposed with sister Janet duetting on the first verse of the chorus. Barbra Streisand, Fergie, a wailing Celine Dion and others follow. Miley Cyrus, Enrique Iglesias, Foxx, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, Pink, Mary J. Blige, Akon, T-Pain and others take verses later in the song; a second verse from a recording of Michael Jackson is immediately followed by Usher. Carlos Santana and Orianthi are seen playing guitars; Richie and Jones are often visible, smiling on the sidelines. The most remarkable moments come from the rappers : an Auto-Tuned Lil Wayne sings Bob Dylan’s verse , Wyclef adds some Haitian flavor , and Will.I.Am and Kanye West both rap verses. “Like Katrina, Africa and Indonesia/ Haiti needs us,” Will.I.Am raps. LL Cool J, Will.I.Am, Swizz Beatz, Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes team up for a rapped section; Bizzy Bone, Kid Cudi, Drake and Nipsey Hussle were also at the session. The music drops out toward the end to let the chorus sing alone. Amid the studio footage we see Haitian children dancing amid the destruction in their homeland. Tellingly, the Haiti footage focuses on rebuilding efforts. Haggis talked with MTV News about the session earlier this week. “You hear these stories about people checking their egos at the door, and it really is true,” he said. “They came and stood forever and were glorified extras a lot of the time.
