Blink-182’s ‘Up All Night’: Mark Hoppus Tells The Story

First Neighborhoods single ‘harder and heavier than its original incarnation,’ Hoppus writes in email to MTV News. By James Montgomery Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus Photo: C Flanigan/ FilmMagic Sure, there’s already been a reunion tour , but Thursday, blink-182 officially returned with “Up All Night,” their first proper single in nearly seven years. And while the song recalls elements of Blink’s past (not to mention all those side projects), it’s by no means nostalgic. With its darkly undulating electronics, churning chords and Barker’s mighty mashing, it also represents a new Blink for a new millennium. And that’s even more impressive when you consider that the song’s actually been around for more than two years now, ever since Blink-182 first resumed jamming together in early 2009. During that time, it’s undergone some rather drastic changes, but it’s always remained core to what the band hoped to do on their new album, Neighborhoods. How do we know all this? Because Mark Hoppus told us, in an email Friday morning (July 15), just hours after “Up All Night” nearly broke the Internet. ” ‘Up All Night’ was the first song that we started writing when the band got back together,” he wrote. “The foundation of the song remains largely the same as when we first began, but over the past two years, as we’ve been recording others songs, coming back to this one, working on something else, coming back to this song, it’s gotten harder and heavier than its original incarnation. “Initially the chorus had much more air. It was a lofty, synth-y chorus, but we wanted the first song that people heard to be much more of a rocker. We changed a bunch of the instrumentation, recorded heavier guitars and bass, and Tom [DeLonge] wrote the progression that the guitars take on in the chorus,” he continued. “Then Travis [Barker] took it over and the drums really solidified the rock element of the track. The half-time intro of the last section was all him, and I think punctuates the song very well.” After all that work, you can imagine how thrilled the guys in Blink have been by the song’s initial reception. But that’s just the first part of their return. As Hoppus wrote, the next step is letting fans hear Neighborhoods itself. He’s beyond excited for that, too. “I’m so glad to finally have new music out, and cannot believe how well it has been received,” he wrote. “[Our website] crashed out several times, my Google-plus account crashed out twice, and blink-182 was a top trending topic worldwide. Totally amazing. Now, I can’t wait for the album itself to be released.” Share your review of “Up All Night” in the comments below! Related Artists blink-182

‘Glee’ Original Songs Slated For March Episode Hit The Net

Ryan Seacrest previewed soon-to-be ‘Gleek anthem’ ‘Loser Like Me’ and ‘Get It Right’ on his radio show. By Aly Semigran The cast of “Glee” Photo: FOX During the February 15 episode of “Glee” (titled ” Silly Love Songs “), Lea Michele’s character, Rachel, not-so-subtly foreshadowed the arrival of original songs on the show. But while new tunes “Loser Like Me” and “Get It Right” won’t appear on the hit series until March 15, Gleeks got a first listen on Friday morning (February 25). The two new original “Glee” tracks debuted on “On Air With Ryan Seacrest.” Ryan also tweeted out the information, posting on his page, “Attn Gleeks! Here’s the world premiere of #Glee’s first ever original songs ‘Loser Like Me’ & ‘Get It Right’: http://bit.ly/i5pNJv.” “Loser” features all of the New Directions members, led by Michele and Cory Monteith. The peppy pop ditty features lyrics keeping in tune with the themes of the show. After the opening guitar riffs, Michele croons, “Yeah, you may think that I’m a zero/ But hey, everyone you wanna be/ Probably started off like me/ You may say that I’m a freak show/ But hey, give it just a little time/ I bet you’re gonna change your mind.” Monteith later comes in with similar “we’ll show you” lyrics: “Pushed me up against the locker/ But hey, all I do is shake it off/ I’ll get you back when I’m your boss.” The rest of their castmates join them for the chorus, singing, “You wanna be/ You wanna be/ A loser like me.” Earlier this week, “Glee” music producer Adam Anders — the pair penned the numbers along with pop music powerhouse Max Martin — described “Loser” to Entertainment Weekly as a “Gleek anthem. It’s a very uptempo, kind-of-summery hit.” The Michele solo “Get It Right” was inspired by “Lea’s story line,” Anders told EW. In its opening moments, the Michele ballad sounds reminiscent of the Britney Spears hit “Everytime” thanks to its fluttering piano and breathy vocals, but comes into its own as it builds. The Golden Globe-nominated star cries in the chorus, “What can you do/ When your good isn’t good enough/ And all that you touch tumbles down/ ‘Cause my best intentions keep making a mess of things/ I just want to fix it somehow/ But how many times will it take for me to get it right?” Both “Loser Like Me” and “Get It Right” will appear on the album “Glee: The Music, Volume 5,” which will also feature season-two covers like Michele’s take on Katy Perry’s “Firework” and guest star Gwyneth Paltrow’s rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.” The fifth installment is due on March 8. Hayley Williams Posts Demo Of New Song, ‘In The Mourning’

‘I don’t want people thinking it’s a new Paramore song. This is just something I wrote for fun,’ the singer says in a blog post. By James Montgomery Hayley Williams Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images Last week, during Paramore’s “Last Word” interview with MTV News, Hayley Williams promised fans that the band would “definitely” be releasing new music in 2011 … and, it looks like she meant it. Well, sort of. On Tuesday, Williams took to her blog to post the chorus of a song called “In the Mourning,” a winsome, windswept thing that, while new — and actually pretty great — probably won’t be showing up on a Paramore album anytime soon. “A few weeks ago I posted some new lyrics up on Tumblr. Wanted to share the melody with anyone who’s asked me to post it,” Williams wrote on her blog. “This is just the chorus … I didn’t want to post the full thing yet because I don’t want people thinking it’s a new Paramore song. This is just something I wrote for fun. Hope you likes!” Williams did post the lyrics to “In the Mourning” a few weeks prior, and at the time, fans were speculating that they might be related to one of the new demos guitarist Taylor York had written for the group. Now, it doesn’t sound like that’s the case, although Williams and Paramore’s other remaining members — York and bassist Jeremy Davis — are apparently still writing and demoing new material . Late last month, just days after it was announced that founding Paramore members Josh and Zac Farro would be leaving the band, Zac posted a demo by his new project, Tunnel . In February, Paramore will launch a South American tour — their first since the Farro brothers’ departure — with York’s brother Justin filling in on guitar and veteran stickman Josh Freese on drums. What do you think of Hayley’s new demo? Share your opinion in the comments. Pleasure P Declares ‘War’ On His Detractors Via Twitter

‘Half the world think im something that im not,’ former Pretty Ricky member tweets about child-molestation allegations. By Jayson Rodriguez Pleasure P Photo: David Livingston/Getty Images R&B singer Pleasure P spent the majority of the past 12 months lying low after allegations of sexual misconduct with a child . Don’t expect the new year to go the same way. The singer lashed out against his detractors via Twitter on Tuesday; presumably, the targets of his tirade were members of his former group, Pretty Ricky. “Mutha f—as talking bout let it go i aint letting sh– go half the world think im something that im not yall dont know what that feels like,” he wrote. “I had a year to prepare for war now war is about to begin if n—az thought it was over they got another thing coming hahahahahahaha.” The diatribe began when the singer tweeted that he heard what he characterized as “the worst song ever” and asked his followers to guess who recorded the number. Pretty Ricky recently released a new track, “Cookie Cutter,” that’s been embraced relatively slowly, considering their past work. Last December, an anonymous source alleged that Pleasure P molested a young child, which the singer responded by calling the charge against him “vile” and “disgusting.” A legal document that appeared online traced some involvement in the case back to members of Pretty Ricky’s camp. The group denied any involvement in a statement to MTV News at the time. Pleasure P has been pursuing the party he feels is responsible, though he would not confirm that person’s identity. After a tumultuous year, however, the Grammy-nominated Pleasure P appears to be ready to fight fire with hits. He sent his followers a new track, “She Likes,” featuring LaToya Luckett, that appears to be slated for his sophomore set, Pleasure Principles. “We dont do it for the streets we do it for the sheetz lol what it izzzzzzzz,” he wrote before posting the record. Eminem, Jay-Z Track ‘Syllables’ Leaks Online

The dated tune, titled ‘Syllables,’ also features Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Stat Quo and Cashis. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Leave it to the last two Hottest MCs winner, Eminem and Jay-Z, to lament the lost art of lyricism in hip-hop. The two top-notch rappers — along with Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Stat Quo and Cashis — spit about catchy choruses and gimmicks taking over the game on “Syllables.” The track is a buried studio gem from old recording sessions that made its way online on Tuesday night. “If we got to dumb down our style and A-B-C it, then so be it,” Em raps over slow piano stabs. “‘Cause nowadays, these kids, geez/ Don’t give a sh– about lyrics, all they want to hear is a beat and that’s it/ Long as they can go to the club and get blitz, pick up some chicks and get some digits. “We don’t know a word to the verse, we only know the chorus,” he adds later. “‘Cause the chorus repeats the same four words for us.” It’s unclear when the song was recorded, although Cashis confirmed that the number was dated via a Twitter post . “I recorded it a while ago but it just came out today,” wrote the rapper. “Timing is everything.” The tune likely dates back to when Cashis was a newcomer on Shady Records (he and Stat Quo, an Aftermath signee, have since left the respective labels). Meanwhile, a track called “Topless” featuring Eminem and Nas also hit the Net on Tuesday night. A previous version of the song with Nas and T.I. has been circulating online for some time. Em and Tip both rap in cadences similar to Dr. Dre, a sign that their vocals are references for the producer. Related Artists Eminem Jay-Z

Pop Star M.I.A.’s Suicide Bomber Song: ‘I Really Love Allah’

A controversial new pop song might have young music fans unwittingly singing about burkas, the Taliban and, especially, loving Allah. Pop singer phenomenon Maya Arulpragasam, also known as M.I.A., has released a new song called “Lovalot” that has raised eyebrows among music reviewers, some of whom say the lyrics show M.IA.’s sympathy for radical Muslim suicide bombers. The British-born singer, who has openly supported the terrorist organization Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, based her catchy new song “Lovalot” on the 17-year-old Russian “black-widow” Moscow subway bomber Dzhennet Abdurakhmanova, according to newspapers like The Guardian . “In the deadpan electro-rap of ‘Lovalot,’ inspired by a well-publicized incident involving a slain Islamic terrorist and his vengeful suicide-bombing Russian wife, M.I.A. commiserates,” wrote Brad Wheeler in the Globe and Mail on July 13. The song is featured on M.I.A.’s new CD, // / Y /, which was released in July through the singer’s own label N.E.E.T., as well as XL Recordings and Interscope Records. Lovalot’s references to terrorism are hard to ignore, and at points the singer even compares herself to a Taliban fighter and a bomber. “Like a Taliban trucker eatin’ boiled-up yucca, got my eyes done like I’m in a black burka,” sings M.I.A. early in the song. Later she continues, “Like a hand-me-down sucker throwin’ bombs at a Mecca. Call it good will, get money to get better. Keep your head down like a UNICEF worker, if you get hit you can’t question the f**ka’.” Probably one of the most controversial parts of the song is the chorus, where M.I.A. repeats the phrase “I really love a lot” in such a way that it sounds like “I really love Allah.” “Through the mischievous dropping of a ‘t,’ the line ‘I really love a lot’ sounds an awful lot like ‘I really love Allah,'” wrote Wheeler. In the past, M.I.A. has played up her family’s connection to radical Sri Lankan terror groups, and she also shows an affinity for violence in the song, repeating “I fight the ones who fight me” in the chorus. M.I.A., who was included in Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential people in 2009 and sang on the soundtrack for the movie “Slumdog Millionaire,” is well-known for her radical political views. She has previously compared herself to the PLO, and in a controversial interview with New York Times writer Lynn Hirschberg, M.I.A. defended her lyrics, saying “I don’t want to make the same music, sing about the same stuff, talk about the same things. If that makes me a terrorist, then I’m a terrorist.” M.I.A.’s New York Times interview with Hirschberg resulted in a feud between the singer and the journalist, with M.I.A. publishing Hirschberg’s phone number on Twitter. The musician claimed that she wasn’t portrayed accurately in the article. Another recent song of M.I.A.’s that has drawn criticism is “Born Free.” The ultra-graphic and violent music video for the song features American immigration authorities rounding up red-headed people and busing them to the desert, where the redheads are chased down, shot, and blown apart with bombs. Lyrics of “Lovalot”: They told me this is a free country, But now it feels like a chicken factory. I feel cooped up, I wanna bust free, Got nothin’ to lose if you get me. Like a Taliban trucker eatin’ boiled-up yucca, Get my eyes done like I’m in a black burka, Been through shit, yeah it’s a fucka’, But now I make tunes, say shuck-a-lucka-lucka. Shuck-a-lucka-la, Shuck-a-lucka-lee, Shuck-a-lucka-lucka-lucka-lucky, lucky me. If you check me, I check you. If they kick you, then I’ll back you. Say something new, say something cool, Give you my time, but I ain’t no fool. I could I could I, break-a-break-a jaw, Every-every time someone steps on my toe. I fight the ones that fight me. I really love a lah, I really love a lah. I really love a lah, I really love a lah. But, I fight the ones that fight me. But, I fight the ones that fight me. I fight the ones that fight me. But, I fight– But, I fight– But, I fight– But, I fight the ones that fight me. Who’s in town? Them no like me, me no like them. Like Hu Jintao Instead of them I got a new-found gem. Someone I can love up like men. Like a bomber needs to love up Chen. Like a hand-me-down sucker throwin’ bombs at a Mecca, Call the good will, get money to get better. Keep your head down like a Unicef worker, If you get hit you can’t question the fucka’. I can’t come out Yeah but yeah but why If I B the F to the F to the I. If you met me, then you’d get me, But for you to get me, will you get a fee. Shoots men to be free, where’s Bob Marley? ‘Cause I won’t turn my cheek like I’m Gandhi. I fight the ones that fight me. M.I.A. will be performing a concert in Los Angeles on July 17, and another one in New York City on July 24.

Eminem Joins B.o.B At BET Awards For ‘Airplanes’/ ‘Not Afraid’ Medley

Keyshia Cole takes over for Paramore’s Hayley Williams on the chorus. By Hillary Crosley Eminem performs at the 2010 BET Awards Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Not only did B.o.B get a chance to perform his hit “Nothin’ on You” during the BET Awards pre-show , but the rookie MC also brought out Keyshia Cole for his hit “Airplanes” during the main show. After an introduction by T.I. and Queen Latifah, during which the pair jokingly referenced T.I.’s arrest for gun charges before the 2007 BET Awards , B.o.B began his set by playing the piano. Cole launched into the song’s chorus, surprising the audience, since she’s been out of the spotlight following the birth of her first child with basketball player Daniel Gibson. Sporting blond hair, a textured red skirt with a black top and matching stilettos, Cole gave “Airplanes,” which originally featured Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams, a soulful spin through her trademark vocal runs. Once Cole and B.o.B reached the chorus, Eminem joined the duo onstage for his verse on the track’s remix. Then, the music ran seamlessly into Em’s newest single, “Not Afraid.” The Detroit MC recently appeared on the “Late Show With David Letterman” to promote his and Jay-Z’s upcoming concerts at New York’s Yankee Stadium and Detroit’s Comerica Park. On Sunday night (June 27), wearing a black jacket with a white tee and jeans, the MC ran through “Not Afraid” backed by a five-piece band and a gospel choir. Rhyming with a reserved and controlled energy, Eminem ended his performance of the emotional track to a standing ovation. What did you think of B.o.B’s and Eminem’s performances?
