Robert Downey Jr. Talks Jon Favreau’s Departure From ‘Iron Man 3’

Downey says shooting the next ‘Iron Man’ installment without the director will be ‘weird.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Downey Jr. Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images After director Jon Favreau departed the “Iron Man” franchise but before Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”) became the front-runner to helm the third installment of the superhero-movie series, MTV News sat down with Robert Downey Jr. and asked the actor how it would feel to play Tony Stark without Favreau behind the camera. “It is weird. I think there’s always a closure to everything,” he said, adding, “This will all come to an end one day, and I think the thing is to just really enjoy it while you have it.” No bad blood exists between the two men and, as Downey told us, he remains friendly with Favreau and is looking forward to his next directorial effort. “He’s up to great stuff with ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ coming up,” the actor said. “I just spoke with him a few weeks ago and we were quite friendly.” Before Downey begins “Iron Man 3,” which isn’t due in theaters until May 2013, he’ll be joining the highly anticipated superhero all-star flick, “The Avengers.” The picture will bring Downey’s metal-suited Stark together with the likes of Chris Evans’ Captain America, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. “The Avengers” will begin filming later this year, after Downey finishes work on “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” which he was shooting when we caught up with him in January. Ever the jokester, Downey said he won’t have to do much preparation to make “Avengers” a winner. “You grow a moustache and maybe do something with the hair. That’s how easy it is,” he laughed. “It’s going to be great, once I tell them what to do.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

Jeremy Renner Talks ‘Avengers’ At Oscars

‘It’s tremendous. I can’t tell you anything about it,’ actor says of the highly secretive script. By Rick Marshall Jeremy Renner attends the 2011 Academy Awards Photo: Getty Images With ” The Avengers ” hitting theaters in 2012, all eyes are on Marvel’s heroes as we get closer to the day when Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and a host of other comic book characters (and the actors who play them) will appear together on the same screen. One of the superheroes who won’t be debuting in his own solo movie is Clint Barton, the expert archer known as Hawkeye. Played by “Hurt Locker” actor Jeremy Renner , Hawkeye will likely make his official debut in “The Avengers” — though recent rumors have pegged him for a cameo in “Thor.” MTV News caught up with Renner on the red carpet at this year’s Academy Awards and pressed him for details about his debut as the bow-wielding marksman. “Yes, I have [read the ‘Avengers’ script],” Renner said. “It’s tremendous. I can’t tell you anything about it.” Calling the film a “massive undertaking,” Renner praised the ambition of “Avengers” director Joss Whedon , who’s tasked with putting all of Marvel’s biggest stars in the same film and making sure there’s enough spotlight to go around. “He [will need to] pull all of those characters off and have it make sense,” the actor said. Little is known about the plot of “Avengers” at this point, other than that it will bring together a long list of high-profile actors and the larger-than-life characters they play in Marvel’s movie universe. During last year’s Comic-Con in San Diego , Marvel unveiled the core “Avengers” cast of Renner, Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) and Clark Gregg (S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson). In order to prepare for the role, Renner said archery lessons are indeed on his to-do list — though he has yet to see the costume he’ll don as Hawkeye. As for that rumor about Hawkeye making a cameo in “Thor,” Renner would neither confirm nor deny the possibility of fans getting an early peek at his take on the Avenger’s marksman. “I might [have a cameo in ‘Thor’],” he teased. “Go see it. Check it out.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon, More Round Out December Love Report

This month was full of celebrity engagements, weddings and a few breakups. By Jocelyn Vena Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images December has been an interesting month for Hollywood in the love department. There have been several shocking splits and even more engagements, with one seemingly pouring in every hour on the hour. Let’s also not forget that some couples tied the knot. As December wraps up, MTV News is taking a look back on a busy month for love. The Engagements Tony Romo and TV sports reporter Candice Crawford (sister of Chace Crawford) kicked off engagement-palooza earlier this month when they announced they were going to marry. Quickly all of Hollywood joined suit with LeAnn Rimes , Lily Allen and Ginnifer Goodwin all getting engaged. Two of Hollywood’s most famous actresses also announced their engagements this month. Reese Witherspoon announced Tuesday that she will marry Hollywood agent Jim Toth, and Natalie Portman had a lot of good news, sharing that she is set to marry “Black Swan” ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied and that the two are expecting a baby. The Weddings Nicole Richie and Joel Madden married in mid-December after having four years and two kids together. We assume they just wanted to make sure they really liked each other before they said “I do.” On Tuesday we learned that Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky tied the knot. And finally, “Lord of the Rings” actor Billy Boyd also married this month. The Breakups It was surprising to hear that Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds were divorcing after two years of marriage, but the couple confirmed the news in mid-December. Equally shocking was the news that Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens were separating after several years as one of young Hollywood’s favorite couples. Filming for the upcoming season of “Dexter” might be a little awkward now that the show’s star, Michael C. Hall, and his TV sister, Jennifer Carpenter , are divorcing. And just this week, fans learned that Rihanna and her baseball beau, Matt Kemp , decided to split because of their busy schedules. Which December hookup or breakup most surprised you? Reese Witherspoon Engaged To Agent Jim Toth

‘They are extremely happy,’ Witherspoon’s rep tells Us Weekly. By James Dinh Jim Toth and Reese Witherspoon in September Photo: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/WireImage Reese Witherspoon finds herself in the middle of a love triangle in her latest film, “How Do You Know,” but beyond the big screen, the Oscar-winning actress has her eye set on just one man. On Tuesday (December 28), a rep for the star announced that Witherspoon is engaged to Hollywood agent boyfriend Jim Toth, according to Us Weekly. “They are extremely happy,” Witherspoon’s rep told the magazine. The couple, who have been dating for the past year, went public with their romance earlier this year after Witherspoon called it quits with Jake Gyllenhaal. Toth, 40, works at Los Angeles’ Creative Artists Agency, a prominent entertainment and sports agency where the 34-year-old actress is a client; however, Toth does not represent Witherspoon. Earlier this month, a source told People that Toth was insistent that Witherspoon is his ideal woman. “Jim knows she’s the one,” a source said. “They’re a perfect match.” Reese spoke about wedding bells in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying, “My mom always texts me, like, ‘Are you getting married?’ I’m like, ‘Mom, come on! You would know if I was getting married.’ ” This marks the second marriage for Witherspoon, who has two children (Ava, 11, and Deacon, 7) with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe. Why Did Natalie Portman, LeAnn Rimes, More Celebs Get Engaged?

Relationship expert Amy Laurent sizes up recent string of engagements, including Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Simpson and Lily Allen. By Kara Warner Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images With the number of newly engaged and/or married celebrity couples recently announced, it is obvious that something is in the air. Within the last two months alone, there have been eight celeb engagements and one marriage. The engagements thus far: Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth, Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied , LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian , Ginnifer Goodwin and Joey Kern , Lily Allen and Sam Cooper , Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson , Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo and Tony Romo and Candice Crawford . And the marriage: Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky . So why the sudden flurry of committed coupling? According to relationship expert and professional matchmaker Amy Laurent, we can chalk it all up to the phenomenon known as “mistletoe syndrome.” “Around the holidays people get more in the mood, more romantic,” Laurent explained to MTV News of the term coined by her friend, artist Annika Connor. “Those are the times when people start re-evaluating their relationships. [It occurs] in November, December, January, and we see a lot of marriages, a lot of engagements,” she said. “And then there is withdrawal after the syndrome wears off, come Valentine’s Day, February, March.” Regarding the growing list of engagements, Laurent said she feels confident that all the couples in question have taken the plunge for the right reasons and not from the effects of mistletoe syndrome. “The thing I really like about Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo, they’ve been dating for about four years. They’ve stayed strong,” she said. “There was a brief breakup in 2009, but they got back together shortly thereafter, and it didn’t really last long. The signs are all there that they can last through the trials and tribulations. …They are going to survive the test of time. Nick has been married before. It’s not something he’s jumping into. She’s 30, he’s 37; it seems like a strong relationship.” For Simpson and Johnson, Laurent said she is definitely rooting for them. “She’s really come into her own,” Laurent said, citing Simpson’s prior relationships and periods of time in which she was single as the proper learning experiences she needed to be ready for the right one. “That’s why I think it’s all about timing. I think she learned from those experiences,” Laurent said. “Now I feel like she’s in the right place for it at the right time. Again, it’s all about timing. She’s definitely someone I’m rooting for.” Laurent also had a rosy prediction for Portman and Millepied. “I have so much respect for her. She is in such a good space right now with her personal life and her professional life,” she said. “If you look at her history, she’s been able to balance her life and succeed in Hollywood without getting wrapped up and becoming a Lindsay Lohan. She’s been able to successfully keep down to earth and stay somewhat private. She’s made good decisions all along, I don’t think this is going to be any different.” Finally, with regard to Rimes and Cibrian, Laurent said that the fact that the couple has survived the tabloid storm of scrutiny (they were criticized when they started dating after allegedly cheating on their former spouses) should bode well for them. “The fact that they’ve come this far to me says that there is a true relationship, a true bond,” Laurent said. “And there is something to be said about how they’ve overcome the trials that they’ve been through,” she added. “I think it’s something real, I think they have a good chance.” What do you think of all these newly engaged celebs?
