‘Men In Black’ Shoot Down ‘Avengers’ At Holiday Weekend Box Office

‘Avengers’ finally forced to #2 after nearly a month at the top. By Ryan J. Downey Will Smith in “Men In Black 3” Photo: Sony Pictures It wasn’t Loki, an army of otherworldly Chitauri nor any other super-villain that finally defeated Captain America and his pals. A satiric adaptation of a 1970s soap opera and a big-budget action flick based on a board game tried and failed. Ultimately, it was another franchise with comic book roots that ended the nearly month-long reign of “The Avengers” at the top of the box office, as “Men in Black 3” became the #1 movie in America with an estimated $70 million debut over the four-day Memorial Day weekend. The third entry in the Will Smith/ Tommy Lee Jones franchise, based on a short-lived comic series from the early 1990s, took in another $133.2 million overseas, giving it a worldwide total of $203.2 million. Box-office prognosticators had predicted a somewhat stronger opening for the 3-D film, which carried a reported production budget near $250 million. Enthusiasm and nostalgia for the 1997 original, about a pair of criminal-alien-busting special agents, remains high. But the 2002 sequel was poorly received by critics, who were a bit kinder to “MIB 3,” which added Josh Brolin as a younger version of Jones’ character in time-travel scenes. The first “Men in Black” made $589 million around the world. Its follow-up trailed behind with $442 million. The opening weekend for “MIB 3” wasn’t far off from “MIB 2.” Will Smith, top-billed in hits like “Hancock” and “I Am Legend,” broke a four-year hiatus from the screen with “Men in Black 3.” Critics were not kind (the film had a 67 percent score on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes at press time) and audiences who saw the movie assigned it a D-plus CinemaScore. “Chernobyl Diaries” was the only other widely released new film over the holiday weekend. The low-budget horror tale was #6 with just $9.3 million. “Men in Black 3” was able to do what “Dark Shadows” and “Battleship” failed to do in recent weeks by knocking “The Avengers” to #2, though Marvel’s superhero team-up flick still generated gigantic numbers considering how long it’s been in theaters. “The Avengers” earned another $46.9 million over the four-day weekend (and crossed the $500 million mark on Saturday, making it the first movie to ever do so) for a total of $523.6 million. Not adjusted for inflation, “The Avengers” is now the fourth-biggest movie of all time, behind “Avatar,” “Titanic” and the final entry in the “Harry Potter” movie franchise. “Battleship” sunk even further at the box office, dropping 57 percent to #3 after a less-than-impressive debut last weekend. The blend of high-seas action and sci-fi made $13.8 million over the holiday for a domestic total of $47.3 million. “Battleship” has made $232.7 million overseas but has earned even less than Taylor Kitsch’s last film, notorious big-budget bomb “John Carter,” over the same amount of time in theaters. “The Dictator” was #4 during its second weekend with $11.8 million for a $43.6 million total. “Dark Shadows” was #5 with $9.4 million for a total of $64.9 million. The latest Johnny Depp/ Tim Burton collaboration won’t make anywhere near the box-office coin of films like “Alice in Wonderland,” though it did manage to pass “Sweeney Todd” over the weekend. The movie carried a reported production budget of $150 million. In the limited-release world, “Moonrise Kingdom” collected $669,000 from just four theaters over four days. That estimate puts it ahead of “Dreamgirls” with the highest per screen average debut of any live action film. That number is also higher than filmmaker Wes Anderson’s previous best, “The Royal Tenenbaums.” Also in four theaters over the weekend: “The Intouchables,” a French film that has already made $340 million worldwide, grossed $137,438 through Monday. One of the stars of “The Avengers,” Chris Hemsworth (Thor), will appear in theaters again this weekend as one of the title characters in “Snow White and the Huntsman.” The movie co-stars Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron as the evil queen. It was directed by newcomer Rupert Sanders. Hemsworth’s wife, actress Elsa Pataky, gave birth to the couple’s first child ‘very recently.’ By Jocelyn Vena Chris Hemsworth Photo: WireImage It seems Thor now has an heir to his throne. Chris Hemsworth and his wife, actress Elsa Pataky, welcomed their first child, a daughter named India. The news of the baby’s birth broke on Saturday, while the “Avengers” actor was in London promoting his other big film release, “Snow White and The Huntsman.” “It was just a name we liked, I always kind of liked Indie or Indiana for a boy and she liked India,” the Australian actor told E! News . “We sorta went, ‘Oh well, whether it’s a boy or girl, that will decide.’ It just seemed to fit.” According to People.com , the baby was born on Friday, but Hemsworth refused to confirm that report when chatting with E!, only noting that India was born “very recently.” He did add, “I’ve wanted to have kids for a long time, and here it is, and I couldn’t be happier.” Hemsworth and Pataky, who married in December 2010 , announced they were expecting back in January . “Since it’s our first child, we don’t care if it’s a boy or girl, our only wish is that it’s healthy,” Pataky said at the time. “I’m only going to speak to the baby in Spanish. I already told my husband, ‘Get ready fast with Spanish because, if not, you’re not going to be able to understand what we say.’ ” With “The Avengers” continuing to rule the box office and breaking records while it’s at it (it just crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide), it’s a good time to be a Hemsworth. “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which also stars Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron, opens June 1. Nick Cannon Teases ‘Fantasy/Fairytale’ Project With Mariah Carey

‘We’re both kids at heart,’ he says of working with his superstar wife on a family-friendly animated project. By Jocelyn Vena Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon Photo: Getty Images Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon might soon be working together on a top-secret project. The proud parents of Dem Babies are hooking up for a spankin’-new endeavor that will focus on family. While the details of the venture are slim, Cannon shared that it will certainly pay homage to their year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe . “Yeah we actually got some stuff in development that we’re working on, some animated stuff that her and I are putting together,” he told MTV News. “So you’ll definitely see her in that space too. Oh yeah, it’s just something that we both enjoy, and even more so than that, we’re both kids at heart. So we love those types of stories and fantasy/fairytale type of stuff.” Before Cannon explores fairytales with Carey, he serves as the executive producer on the forthcoming Nickelodeon flick, “Rags,” a hip take on Cinderella, complete with gender role reversals. It features Nick stars Keke Palmer, Max Schneider and Drake Bell. The network chairman explains that you should expect more and more family-friendly programming influenced by his own real-life role as dad. “I mean it’s one of those things where a lot of the stuff I’m going to be doing in the near future is going to be really family-driven just because of the fact being a father and wanting to be able to provide content for my kids,” he said. “So it works out really good. It makes you proud when you can have some work that your kids can go see.” In addition to “Rags” and his untitled project with Carey, Cannon just signed on to make his directorial debut with “School Dance,” which will follow in the vein of “Friday” and “House Party.” Variety reports it will revolve around a teen who wants to join the coolest dance clique in school, though he fears his stage fright will prevent him from passing initiation. While it seems that Cannon is focused on making projects his kids can watch, it might be a while before Roc and Roe check out “School Dance.” What kind of project would you like to see from Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon? Kristen Stewart Wants To Be A ‘Better Person’ Like Snow White

‘She’s truly bleeding for other people,’ ‘Snow White and the Hunstman’ star says on ‘MTV First’ about her character. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart on “MTV First: Snow White and the Huntsman” Photo: MTV News Kristen Stewart puts her inner action star on full display as the butt-kicking Snow White in “Snow White and the Huntsman.” But, it’s her vulnerability that Stewart related to most with the chainmail-wearing princess. “I think that I related to Snowy because … I love her,” she laughed to MTV News during “MTV First: Snow White and the Hunstman” on Tuesday night. “She feels such strong things and sort of can’t say exactly why she feels those things … and I can completely relate to that and I also can relate to feeling arrogant about it a little bit. Sort of like ‘It’s not about being who you are; it’s sort of not saying what everyone thinks I’m going to say because I’m uncomfortable’ … She’s like very instinctive and sort of awesome in that way.” Having already brought to life one literary heroine playing “Twilight” leading lady Bella Swan, she explained that she didn’t feel pressure to have to tackle Snow White, mostly because there was enough room for her to interrupt the character the way she felt was natural. “I mean she’s such a child in the beginning and has such a strong sense of self in a way that sort of isn’t normal, like supernaturally almost,” she said. “She’s got this connection to the Earth and to her people that makes her like so truly empathetic and not sympathetic. “She’s not putting herself in a position and going, ‘Oh, how horrible would that be for me.’ She’s truly bleeding for other people,” she said. “It’s a different feeling. It’s something I want to get to if I can be a better person. She’s a great girl. She’s a good person.” “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which also stars Charlize Theron (who plays the evil queen Ravenna ), Chris Hemsworth (The Huntsman) and Sam Claflin (the charming Prince William), hits theaters June 1. Is Joss Whedon Up For An ‘Avengers’ Sequel?

Director calls first film ‘an extraordinary experience’ — but he also tells MTV News he needs to rest for ’17 years in a cave.’ By Kara Warner Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. in “The Avengers” Photo: Marvel Studios Now that “Marvel’s The Avengers” has taken in oodles and oodles of cash during its opening weekend here in the U.S., it’s time to talk about the sequel, of course! There will likely need to be some serious discussions about scheduling, but given the fact that Marvel already has plans for a slew of other superhero-related sequels like “Iron Man 3” , “Captain America 2” and “Thor 2,” another “Avengers” can’t be too far away, can it? MTV News put the question to the first film’s mastermind, Joss Whedon, by asking for his thoughts on returning to helm a second chapter of the film. Whedon provided some insightful commentary about his experience, along with some artful dodgery. “You know, it was an extraordinary experience,” Whedon said. “The actors gave me so much, Marvel gave me so much trust. And [when] I said, ‘Well, if I was going to do this [movie], I’d like to do this,’ that’s the movie I made,” he explained of his satisfaction with the creative freedom he was afforded with the film. “And they only ever moved it forward and collaborated and supported me. And I gotta tell you, that’s unusual from a studio.” So we’ll take that positive and diplomatic response as “I will have to think about it”? Similarly, when we ran into Whedon at the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles, we tried to get more specific and asked him how many days of vacation he’d need before he’d be able to think about a sequel. “Seventeen years in a tiny cave,” Whedon said with a smile. “In Tibet.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Marvel’s The Avengers.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Judd Apatow’s ‘This Is 40’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd are back as Debbie and Pete, picking up in their marriage where they left off in “Knocked Up.” By Fallon Prinzivalli Melissa McCarthy and Paul Rudd in “This is 40” Photo: Universal Pictures Ever wonder what happened to Alison’s sister and brother-in-law from “Knocked Up” ? The dynamic duo of Debbie ( Leslie Mann ) and Pete ( Paul Rudd ) had a few key scenes in the film, including Debbie taking Alison (Katherine Heigl) to the club where she meets Seth Rogen’s character. Now Judd Apatow aims to brings us back into the lives of the couple as Debbie celebrates her 40th birthday in “This Is 40.” Continually lying about her age as she refuses to accept it, Debbie wonders if she’s living the best life possible and decides she and Pete need to make some changes. “I’ve made a list,” she tells her husband in a scene from the trailer , which was released on Friday (April 27). “It’s the ‘do-better’ list. We’re 40 years old, if we don’t do it now, when are we going to do it?” Read on for more on five key scenes from the clip! Counting the Rings At the gynecologist’s office, the nurses try to figure out if Debbie was born in 1972, ’74 or ’75 since her paperwork lists a range of dates of birth. When Debbie finally blurts out, “I lie about my age, OK ? OK?” her gynecologist responds, “I know how old you are. I’m counting the rings.” And with that line, we know typical Apatow humor will be on display in this flick. After that exchange, Debbie decides it’s time for a change and makes a list of the top three things she and her husband need to focus on now that they’re in their 40s: exercise, the kids’ education and being patient. Exercise Every Day In one scene, Debbie works with a personal trainer, which allows the filmmakers to bring back Jason Segel ‘s “Knocked Up” character, also named Jason. “I can turn your body into a boner machine,” he tells Debbie. When she points out that every woman gives him a boner, he replies, “Don’t sell yourself short,” before adding in a whisper, “Barb doesn’t give me a boner.” Looks like Jason’s crush on Alison’s sister never went away. Get Involved in School As Pete confronts a mother whose son is picking on his daughter, “Bridesmaids” star Melissa McCarthy makes a cameo as the confrontational mommy. She tells Pete to get his daughter’s meds right and Pete calls her son an animal. When Pete gives her shoulder a little shove, she screams, “You touched my nipple!” When he tells her he merely touched her below her shoulder, she replies, “I have very high nipples!” How Rudd kept from breaking into laughter during that scene is beyond us. More Patience With the Kids Another key scene opens with Pete and Debbie’s daughters pulling each other’s hair as they fight in the back seat of the car. It then cuts to them at the dinner table, where Debbie announces they’re cutting back on the girls’ gadget use so they’ll spend more time outside. She suggests instead that they build a fort, to which the exasperated eldest daughter exclaims, “And do what in the fort?” When Debbie says, “You don’t need technology,” the youngest daughter holds an iPhone up to her mouth and says, “No technology,” as a monkey on the screen mimics her words. Payback Time The final scene shows Pete spread-eagle on a bed, holding a mirror up to his crotch trying to look at … something. (We honestly don’t want to know what.) When he asks Debbie to take a look, she asks if they can just keep a small shred of mystery in their relationship. Pete replies, “I saw you have babies — payback time.” At least being in your 40s isn’t boring. “This Is 40” is set to hit theaters Christmas 2012.
