New clip is a brightly-colored, paint-covered celebration of everyday life. By James Montgomery Coldplay’s Chris Martin in their “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” music video Photo: Capitol It’s probably impossible to measure how many gallons of paint — glow-in-the-dark, high-gloss, Krylon, etc. — were used in the making of Coldplay’s brand-new “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” video, which premiered Wednesday (June 29). But suffice it to say, it was probably a lot. It seems that paint, gloriously splashed and joyously hued, is a recurring theme in the band’s upcoming fifth album; while you can infer from that what you will, in the case of Coldplay’s “Waterfall” clip, the end result is one that matches the sheer uplift of the song itself. This is a video that shakes you to life. Filmed mainly in stop-motion, the video follows Chris Martin and his mates as they wander through, above and, eventually, outside a decaying urban expanse, their music — and, of course, the paint — breathing new life into its crumbling husk. In a way, that’s sort of like the song, too. Martin’s lyrics are very much about the power his old records possess; they imbue ordinary life with the extraordinary. Aside from the paint, the clip’s use of stop-motion recalls earlier Coldplay videos, most notably “Strawberry Swing,” but they’ve always had a thing for messing with the constraints of time (see the shot-in-reverse “The Scientist” or “Christmas Lights” for proof). Their new one matches the exuberance of “Swing” and the childlike wonder of “Lights,” and, unlike “The Scientist,” there isn’t a single horrifying car wreck to be seen. But mostly it’s about all that paint, those colors and the ability they have to brighten everyday life. Just like Martin sings, every siren can be a symphony and every heartbeat can build a cathedral. Nicole Kidman, a Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) nominee for her work in “Rabbit Hole,” said in a statement, “It took more than four years to get our little movie off the ground, and to be recognized for my work in a film that means so much to me is truly such an honor. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press [Association] for your continued support.” “Black Swan” is up for four Golden Globe nods, including Best Picture (Drama) and Best Director for Darren Aronofsky, who explained, “I am very thankful to the HFPA for this honor. The prestige of the nominations draws attention to independent films like ‘Black Swan’ and I think helps get these small films made. I am also so thrilled for my actors Natalie [Portman] and Mila [Kunis] who gave me their spirits to film and risked losing toe nails every day.” Six-times-nominated screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, who got acknowledged this year for “The Social Network,” called his latest honor “humbling” and gave props to the others who helped shape the film. “I’ve had the time of my life working alongside my colleagues on ‘The Social Network’ and I’m grateful to the HFPA for recognizing their great, hard work,” he said. “On a personal note it’s humbling to be nominated alongside six of the best screenwriters in town.” “The Social Network” producer Scott Rudin added, “I couldn’t be more thrilled for my colleagues that we were recognized so richly this morning. Huge thanks to the HFPA for a big vote of confidence in our film — we’re very grateful and very honored.” “The Fighter” managed to scoop up a number of nominations, including one in the Best Motion Picture (Drama) category and nods for actors Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg and Amy Adams. Producer Ryan Kavanaugh told MTV News, “We never expected to have this number of nominations. It’s overwhelming and incredible and shocking. Mark said to me this morning, ‘I just kissed the ground and thanked God.’ It’s been such a labor of love for everyone involved and the movie is about perseverance and winning against all odds, and that’s what this movie has done.” Reprising his role as Gordon Gekko paid off for Michael Douglas, who received a Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for his work in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.” The veteran actor, who has been battling throat cancer, said in a statement, “To be selected with these extraordinary nominees is an honor and boy was I ready for some good news!” In the TV world, scored a Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television nod for her role in “The Client List.” The star reacted by saying, “I am so thrilled and grateful for this nomination. By Gil Kaufman Coldplay Photo: Eamonn McCormack/ WireImage One of the endearing quirks of Coldplay is that, despite their slow march to worldwide rock stardom over the past decade, they’ve remained self-deprecating and firmly focused on writing expansive pop songs without falling into the trap of trying to become “important.” But in the sessions for their fifth album, the follow-up to the smash 2008 hit Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, singer Chris Martin and his band are finally taking the dreaded “CA” plunge — as in “concept album.” “It’s from the point of view of two people who are a bit lost,” Martin told BBC News about the Brian Eno-produced disc. “Two like-minded outsiders who meet in a very difficult environment and therefore have a journey together.” After exploring the high-minded issues of love and war on the Grammy-winning Viva la Vida, Martin promised that the new disc will be more intimate and more worldly. “It’s a concept album, but it’s supposed to be very personal within a big framework. Does that make sense?” he said. Working again with Eno (David Bowie, U2), Martin said the band is leaning on the producer and Roxy Music co-founder to once more push them to explode their sound. “Brian is the sower of seeds and ideas and experimenting, which is very liberating. Then [collaborator] Marcus [Dravs]’ job is to come in after all that’s been done and try and sculpt it into some kind of releasable format.” They’ve been working on the album for more than a year, during sessions that the BBC described as “chaotic,” which left Coldplay with a number of half-formed and half-completed tracks. Martin said the group spent a year “making a lot of noise” that now needs to be sorted out and formed into actual songs. There’s no release date scheduled for the yet-untitled disc, but fans will get a brief glimpse at Coldplay later this month when they play a pair of sold-out gigs for the U.K. homeless charity Crisis. “I think it will be good for us to get our gig feet on for a couple of days because sometimes you can get very institutionalized in the studio,” Martin said. “There’s a danger that you forget that you’re going to have to play this for people and that’s when music can become a little bit silly.” They’ve also released the Yuletide single “Christmas Lights” to tide their fans over. The plaintive piano ballad about a holiday lover’s spat is accompanied by a whimsical performance video set on a colorful stage in the middle of a twinkling sea of lights. In what has to be one of the most predictable “just kidding!” moments of 2010, Chris Martin and his Coldplay bandmates have gone back on their initial rejection of Glee . The band was one of two major holdouts — the other being, hilariously, Bryan Adams — that refused to have their catalog performed by New Directions when the series began last year. But according to creator Ryan Murphy, they called him recently and apologized: “We’re sorry, you can have our catalog,” said the band through gritted teeth. Multi-awarded American actress Gwyneth Paltrow expressed her desire to have another child in the family. “I would love to have another child at some point. I feel very, very lucky that I have two healthy, nice ones,” Academy and Emmy Award winning told Ellen DeGeneres on the latter’s show last Tuesday. Paltrow married English singer-songwriter and instrumentalist lead vocals of the band Coldplay Chris Martin in 2003. They are blessed with two nice and well-behaved kids, Apple and Moses. “They’re great. They’re so sweet,” says Paltrow, 37. She also admits that sometimes her children are given to tantrums which all children does. “It’s part of it,” says Paltrow. “They’re kids and they have to do what they have to do.
