McG Considered Clue-Style Alternate Endings for This Means War, Admits He ‘Pussed Out’ on Terminator 4

It’s the biggest, most important question of the season, people: Whom will Reese Witherspoon choose, between pillow-lipped Brit Tom Hardy and confident playboy Chris Pine , in the spy vs. spy love triangle rom-com This Means War ? While you won’t get any spoilers here for the Valentine’s Day release, let Hardy and director McG tease you with the envelope-pushing alternate ending ideas that didn’t quite make it to the final cut. (And no — McG didn’t learn from Terminator: Salvation , which he admitted he “pussed out on.” Hindsight, my friends.) [To the hardcore spoiler-averse who don’t even want to know what doesn’t happen in the film, a mild warning for what follows…] The McG-helmed romantic action-comedy This Means War , written by X-Men: The Last Stand scribe Simon Kinberg, finds Reese Witherspoon dating Hardy and Pine at the same time, unaware that they are CIA spies and best friends. As both men find themselves falling for her she must decide which beau she truly wants to be with. At a press conference today in Los Angeles, McG revealed one idea that was tossed around early on for ending the film in an unconventional way – by releasing two endings into theaters simultaneously, one in which Witherspoon ends up with Hardy and another where she chooses Pine, with no indication to moviegoers of what they were in for. “We wanted to have flexibility and even talked about two endings and releasing it on 3,000 screens — 1,500 have this [ending] and 1,500 have that one, and just not saying anything,” McG said. “But it felt a little gimmicky in the end.” Releasing two endings into theaters in wide release? Now that would have been interesting, possibly even a worthy financial gamble if moviegoers enjoyed the film enough to see it again, either on home video or in theaters, just to see the alternate ending; the most famous predecessor to do this is probably Jonathan Lynn’s Clue , which was distributed to theaters with three different surprise endings. Clue , of course, was a financial failure (though admittedly deserving of its cult status ), so perhaps following this precedent was ultimately unwise for McG and Co., but let’s put it out there: Hollywood, why not try breaking the mold sometime? That said, there was another idea for concluding the film that would have defied Hollywood convention, story-wise. “There’s even an ending where the two boys end up in each other’s arms,” joked McG. “That should have been the ending,” added Hardy from across the podium. “It would have been a really groundbreaking ending! You should have gone for it, really gone for it.” “I know, I know,” McG answered. “I pussed out on the ending of Terminator 4 … so I should’ve gone for the dark ending of this one.” Stay tuned for more on This Means War to come in my forthcoming junket diary, posting next week… Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Tom Hardy, Chris Pine Get Physical In ‘This Means War’ Clip

Reese Witherspoon tries to decide between the two secret agents in a brand-new clips. By Kevin P. Sullivan Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon and Tom Hardy in “This Means War” Photo: 20th Century Fox It takes only two short clips from “This Means War” to show you exactly what kind of movie it is. On one hand you have a woman, played by Reese Witherspoon , torn between two men she genuinely likes. It’s nothing that far out of line with what you expect from your average romantic comedy. On the other hand, you have the influence of McG and two of Hollywood’s top action stars, Tom Hardy and Chris Pine , playing her love interests and secret-agent best buddies. Things, as you can imagine, get a little messy. As part of “MTV First: This Means War” , we debuted two new clips from “This Means War,” and they both give a very good taste of what’s in store in the movie that hits theaters on Valentine’s Day. The first finds Pine’s character, FDR, crashing a date between Hardy’s Tuck and Lauren, played by Witherspoon. Lauren goes to the bathroom to collect herself after the surprise encounter, while back out in the restaurant, the former best friends use every ounce of their professional training to beat the crap out of each, destroying the restaurant in the process. The other clip takes on a much more relaxed tone, showing off the lighter side of the movie. Lauren confides in her best friend, Trish, played by Chelsea Handler, and attempts to make a decision between the two suitors. Unbeknownst to her, both FDR and Tuck listen in. Do the stereotypical tough guy friends who are total bros until a blonde gets between them really exist? I’ve never seen that particular personality in the wild, but I imagine that McG has. Maybe he sees that guy every time he looks in the mirror. His new film This Means War, in which Chris Pine and Tom Hardy are best friends until they realize they’re both dating Reese Witherspoon, feels like it might… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : /Film Discovery Date : 13/10/2011 20:13 Number of articles : 2

Fox Teases Six More Episodes of Lone Star

Following the crazy American Idol panel at Tuesday morning’s TCA event in Pasadena, Fox executives Kevin Reilly and Peter Rice took the stage and were immediately barraged with Lone Star cancellation-related questions from critics. For those believers out there, Reilly and Rice confirmed that the network is still looking for a home for the six unaired episodes they filmed last year. When another critic suggested that the media’s positive reviews of the Kyle Killen drama obviously did not mean anything to the network, the execs joked, “You said your reviews are meaningless. They’re really not. Except in this case.”

I Am Not Ready to Live in a World Where Michelle Pfeiffer Plays Chris Pine’s Mother

I am not ready to live in a world where Michelle Pfeiffer plays Chris Pine’s mother. That world is one we will reportedly live in, and soon, according to recent casting news. Nothing against Pine, a pleasant young talent I look forward to seeing in a smallish drama for once as opposed to smirky sci-fi/action-flick tentpole bombast. And nothing against Pfeiffer, whose choppy last decade of work overshadows her more historic demonstration of versatility and taste. (OK: Grease 2 and Scarface , but they weren’t her fault and everyone must start somewhere.) This may be a wonderful collaboration! All I’m saying is I am just not ready to live in a world… where Michelle Pfeiffer… plays Chris Pine’s mother.

Where is the Runaway Train on the New Unstoppable Poster?

So Fox has unveiled the first official poster for Tony Scott’s long-gestating runaway-train thriller Unstoppable , featuring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine as an unlikely duo charged with halting said train — loaded with chemicals, natch — before it jumps the rails, barrels into a bus full of children and/or achieves any number of other cataclysmic scenarios. All of which raises the question: Where’s the train?

Unstoppable Trailer: Denzel Washington and Chris Pine Try to Catch a Train

Literally. As in, there’s a runaway train loaded with hazardous materials on the loose — says co-star Rosario Dawson: “We’re not just talking about a train; we’re talking about a missile, the size of the Chrysler Building!” — and only Denzel and Capt. Fine can stop it.

James Franco is Into Star Trek Slash Fiction

After appearing on a soap opera , shooting full frontal male nudity , and infiltrating gay pride , we’ve come to think that a little homoeroticism is almost obligatory in all of James Franco’s art projects. Add one more to the list: Franco says his new solo art show in New York is about “sexual confusion,” and will include a work that supposes a romantic Star Trek encounter between James T. Kirk and Spock. Been there, done that . [ WSJ via Vulture ]
