Newsies Musical Gets Start Date

Newsies , perhaps the greatest Bad Movie We Love , will hit Broadway as a new musical from Sept. 15-Oct. 16 at Millburn, New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. Original composer Alan Menken is signed on, and he says the show “latche[s] onto exciting elements of what we had in the movie,” while “minimizing the things that were not so great about the movie.” This is a man who understands lovable badness. American Idol Top 3 Auditions: Austin City’s Limits

Longhorn country served up a tasty trough of sang ers, y’all. I could’ve just eaten them up with a pitchfork and a soda gun fulla A1 sauce! Yee-hoo! But seriously: Austin only gave us three auditioners worth real remembrance, and they’re listed after the jump. Bonus: I’m comparing each winner to a famous pop-culture “Austin.” Clever of me! Because lots of famous people are named Austin, and pop-culture connections are as delicious as a piggy riding a sheepdog. Or something! Country, I don’t understand you!

Oscar Index: Social Network, King’s Speech Resume Steel-Cage Death Match

So you’ve probably heard about yesterday’s Academy Award nominations . Pretty interesting, if you’re into that kind of thing. And really, who isn’t? More importantly, who isn’t into Movieline’s Oscar Index, which went a respectable 30 for 35 in its inaugural attempt to narrow down this year’s nods to a science? Let’s break it all down — and see what it means for the Oscar home stretch:

DVD: Philip Seymour Hoffman Goes Directing in Jack Goes Boating

One of the best films of 2011 that’s not getting much love during this awards season (outside of the Independent Spirit Awards, which bestowed three nominations upon it) is Philip Seymour Hoffman’s directorial debut, Jack Goes Boating (out this week from Anchor Bay Entertainment). And while Mott Hupfel’s gorgeous cinematography — which turns wintry New York City into a gleaming bauble — looks great on Blu-Ray, the DVD itself comes up a little short in the special features department.
