Meet The New Superman: Henry Cavill

British actor known for ‘The Tudors’ was once attached to McG-helmed reboot. By Mawuse Ziegbe Henry Cavill Photo: Michael Loccisano/FilmMagic He’ll be flying into movie theaters in 2012, but who exactly is the newest Superman, Henry Cavill? The latest screen star to don the famed crimson cape has gained fame as a castmember of Showtime’s period romp “The Tudors,” and will hit the big screen in the upcoming Greek mythology epic “War of the Gods.” But before he was tapped to play the iconic superhero, he was super close to portraying everyone from Twilight’s Edward Cullen to James Bond to, ironically, Superman in another filmmaker’s vision of the superhero. He was up for Superman before British screen star Cavill has been making a name for himself stateside as Sir Charles Brandon on the saucy historical drama “The Tudors,” but he’s come close to portraying Superman before. MTV News caught up with Cavill back in 2009, and the then 25-year-old star told us he was set to zip through the sky as the Man of Steel in director McG’s (“Terminator Salvation”) take on the American icon. However, a shuffling of filmmakers resulted in Cavill getting dropped from the project, which eventually became the 2006 flick “Superman Returns.” “I was attached to the McG ‘Superman’ movie,” Cavill told MTV News “Then Bryan Singer came on and took the helm and he made his movie. “[The McG and Singer versions] were two different movies,” Cavill explained. “So it wasn’t so much of a sting because it was like, ‘Oh, I got [the role],’ and then the movie just didn’t happen.” He also reportedly missed out “Batman” … and “The Green Lantern” Cavill was rumored to be on the shortlist of leading men up to vanquish Gotham-area baddies in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” franchise, a role which eventually went to fellow Brit Christian Bale. Ryan Reynolds also reportedly beat out Cavill for the “Green Lantern” series. He lost Edward Cullen to Robert Pattinson Thanks to RPattz, Cavill missed out on one of the biggest movie franchises in recent years, “Twilight,” even though he had some strong support in his corner. “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer once said that Cavill was her dream choice but Mother Nature thwarted the casting. “The only actor I’ve ever seen who I think could come close to pulling off Edward Cullen is Henry Cavill. Henry was Albert, the young son in ‘The Count of Monte Cristo.’ Can you see it? I know I can!” Meyer blogged in 2007. However, after some delays in development, Meyer conceded that Cavill had aged out of “Twilight” territory. “The most disappointing thing for me is losing my perfect Edward.” “By the time the movie came around, I didn’t look right for the character,” Cavill explained to MTV News in 2009, adding, “No one even called me or my agent.” … And he was almost James Bond The actor also auditioned for the role of 007 in “Casino Royale,” but instead Daniel Craig knocked back shaken martinis and coolly took out henchmen as the world’s first blond Bond. He may not have played Bond but he does drive the character’s famed car In a 2009 interview with JustJared.com , Cavill opened up about his biggest splurge, which he said was an Aston Martin — the same sleek, high-end ride that’s been associated with Bond. “It was one of those things that just ended up happening, like, ‘Right, okay, just treat yourself,” he said. The star also dished that he enjoys video games like World of Warcraft and shows like “Dexter.” Related Photos Henry Cavill Imagined As The New Superman

Mark Wahlberg Oscar Snub: Why Was His ‘Fighter’ Performance Ignored?

We examine some theories about why Wahlberg is being largely overlooked this awards season. By Ryan J. Downey Mark Wahlberg Photo: Mike Coppola/ Getty Images There will be no Oscar for Mark Wahlberg’s performance in “The Fighter.” Despite the constant reminder in the film’s television spots that Mark’s character was the one fighting (“Nawt you, nawt you and nawt you!”), the guy playing the role referenced in the film’s very title has been largely overlooked this awards season. A nomination in the Best Actor category at the Golden Globes and inclusion in the movie’s numerous ensemble nods notwithstanding, the guy who passionately worked to bring the true story of “Irish” Mickey Ward to the screen as producer and star remains empty-handed for his own performance. “The Fighter” was gritty, visceral, funny, heartbreaking and heartwarming, and a lot of that has to do with Wahlberg’s lead role, so what went wrong? Here are a few theories: He’s Already Been Rewarded As producer and star of “The Fighter” and champion of the real-life boxers portrayed by him and Bale, Wahlberg has gotten to sit back and enjoy the numerous noms lavished on the rest of the cast and the movie in general. It’s possible that Academy voters figure that since “The Fighter” is such a personal movie for Wahlberg, he’s been rewarded enough through the recognition the flick has gotten in all these other ways. Perhaps folks think a Best Picture nomination for “The Fighter” doubles as love for Wahlberg, as it’s very much his movie in the end. In its analysis, the “Today” show supported this theory, chalking up Wahlberg’s absence to “dilution” from the expanded Best Picture category. “Christian Bale got nominated for playing Mark Wahlberg’s brother, Amy Adams got nominated for playing his girlfriend, Melissa Leo got nominated for playing his mom, and Wahlberg himself got nominated for… Nothing. As an actor, that is,” Joal Ryan wrote, pointing out, “Wahlberg is up for Best Picture for producing.” But Movieline’s Alonso Duralde cautioned against the notion that the Oscars set out to shortchange any particular person. “If there’s anything I’ve learned in my years of voting with the L.A. Film Critics Association, [it’s that] it’s all random and chaotic,” he told MTV News. “We often attribute things to ‘the Academy likes this, or the Academy likes that’— but it’s all about individuals. It may just be that there were five performances that people liked better. For all we know, [Wahlberg] came in sixth by two votes.” Christian Bale Got the Juicier Role “Wahlberg turned in a wicked pissah performance as boxer ‘Irish’ Mickey Ward in ‘The Fighter’ and figured to be a shoo-in for Best Actah, but failed to get an Oscah nawd,” Mark Marino joked over at NextMovie.com . “Meanwhile, as in the film, co-star Christian Bale continues to get all the attention as Dicky Eklund.” As Mickey’s trainer brother, Bale sinks his teeth into crack addiction, familial strife, greed, despair, empathy and even a few prison scenes in “The Fighter.” As Bale said so eloquently at the Golden Globes as he accepted the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama prize: “I really gotta give a shout-out to Mark, because he drove this whole movie. And you can only give a loud performance like the one I gave when you have a quiet anchor and a stoic character. I’ve played that one many times, and it never gets any notice.” FilmDrunk editor in chief/ co-founder Vince Mancini agreed with Bale. “Everybody else has a very showy sort of role,” Mancini told MTV News. “I just don’t think Academy voters necessarily recognize subtlety in acting. Traditionally, they recognize stuff that is big and very obvious. I don’t think Wahlberg’s [performance] was that.” “I have always said that the Academy likes acting that it can quantify,” Duralde reasoned. “They like to be able to put it on a scale and say, ‘Look at this nose, look at this accent, look at all this weight you lost. You’re pretty, but you did this role without makeup.’ They can put a finger on that. The subtler stuff doesn’t get noticed as much because it’s not as showy.” How Much Acting Is He Really Doing? Undeniably, the actor and producer has a strong personal connection with these people and this story. But does that mean he wasn’t acting his ass off? Does everything need to be some big stretch? “I would say this is closely related to [what Bale said],” Mancini pointed out. “The part that’s acting [for Wahlberg] might not be blatantly obvious to people.” Duralde likened this theory to some of the talk back in 1997. “You had this great comic performance by Rupert Evert in ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding,’ but I think people were like, ‘He’s playing a gay guy and he’s gay, so how much work could that be?’ ” he lamented, pointing out that Marsha Mason was nominated for 1979’s “Chapter Two” where she played a character based on her own life. And So … Whatever the reason, or reasons, for Wahlberg’s notable absence from the acting category at most of the major awards, it’s a safe bet that the reception to the film overall offers some satisfaction. “It has been such an incredible journey with ‘The Fighter’ and one that I am grateful to share with David O. Russell, Christian, Melissa, Amy, my fellow producers and the Ward and Eklund families, who are the heart and soul of the film,” Wahlberg said in a statement after the Oscar nominations were announced. “Thank you to the Academy for this tremendous honor.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Fighter.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Oscar-Nominated ‘Fighter’ Actors, Producers ‘Screaming’ Over Nods

‘They’re just as happy if the other one wins,’ producer Ryan Kavanaugh says of Amy Adams’ and Melissa Leo’s Best Supporting Actress noms. By Kara Warner Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg Photo: John Sciulli/ Getty Images While the teams behind “The Social Network” and “The King’s Speech” are toasting their Oscar noms, another group of folks is also celebrating Tuesday morning’s (January 25) Academy Award nominations announcement. The cast and crew of “The Fighter” earned seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director (David O. Russell), Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale), and two Best Supporting Actress nods for (Amy Adams) and (Melissa Leo). MTV News spoke with “Fighter” producer and Relativity Media CEO Ryan Kavanaugh (Relativity fully produced and financed the film) just after he heard the big news. “When I got the news, I was on the phone with David O. Russell and [Mark] Wahlberg and myself, kinda watching and I think you could hear screaming through each house,” he said of their reactions. “The person I’m most excited for is David O. Russell because he really deserved it, he really delivered this package. He’s obviously had his ups and downs in his career, as many people have. He really came through on this movie and it’s nice that the Academy noticed that for him.” Kavanaugh’s fellow producer and the star of the film, Mark Wahlberg, also praised the director and his co-stars in a statement: “It has been such an incredible journey with ‘The Fighter’ and one that I am grateful to share with David O. Russell, Christian, Melissa, Amy, my fellow producers and the Ward and Eklund families, who are the heart and soul of the film. Thank you to the Academy for this tremendous honor.” Regarding Adams and Leo’s dual nominations in the Best Supporting Actress category, the Relativity Media CEO said the actresses won’t be thinking about competition at all. “It’s funny because I think Amy and Melissa, they’re just as happy if the other one wins,” he said. “They are competing against each other but at the same time, I think they’re both really happy for the other one.” Kavanaugh went on to say that although he’d like to go back to bed — Oscar nominations were announced at 5:30 a.m. on the West Coast — he has a long day of work and later, congratulating, to do. “I’ve got a pretty full day coming up. I’ll stop by Mark’s house, I’ll stop by David’s house, give ’em both a big hug,” he said. “[I’ll] try and stop by Christian’s house although he’s probably holed up and won’t even turn on the TV until 10 a.m.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Fighter.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Social Network,’ ‘King’s Speech,’ ‘True Grit’ Lead Oscar Nominations

‘The King’s Speech’ leads the pack with 12 nominations. By Gil Kaufman Colin Firth in “The King’s Speech” Photo: Weinstein Company When the nominees for the 83rd annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning (January 25), “The King’s Speech” came out on top with a field-leading 12 nominations. The critically acclaimed story of Queen Elizabeth II’s stuttering father was trailed by the remake of the western “True Grit,” which locked up 10 nods, followed by “The Social Network” and “Inception,” which each racked up eight nominations. In one of the most lauded performances of the year, Natalie Portman lead the roster of Best Actress nominees for her role as a conflicted ballerina in “Black Swan,” in a category in which she’ll face off against Annette Benning (“The Kids are All Right”), Nicole Kidman (“Rabbit Hole”), Jennifer Lawrence (“Winter’s Bone”) and Michelle Williams (“Blue Valentine”). In all, the thriller “Swan” received five nominations. The Best Actor race will pit another early favorite, Colin Firth of “The King’s Speech,” against Javier Bardem (“Biutiful”), last year’s winner, Jeff Bridges (“True Grit”), Jesse Eisenberg (“The Social Network”), and one of the show’s co-hosts, James Franco (“127 Hours”). Going into Tuesday’s nominations, the Facebook story “The Social Network” appeared to have an edge thanks to a Best Drama win at the recent Golden Globes and a number of top awards from critics groups. But considering the love the Academy has for triumph-over-adversity stories such as the one told in “The King’s Speech,” it’s possible the story of stammering royalty could prevail, especially since it pulled off a major upset over the weekend by winning the top prize at the Producers Guild of America Awards, whose winner often goes on to snag the Best Picture prize at the Oscars. Best Supporting Actress nominees include Amy Adams (“The Fighter”), Helena Bonham Carter (“The King’s Speech”), Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”), newcomer Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit”) and Jacki Weaver (“The Animal Kingdom”). Though a win is unlikely, the nomination for 14-year-old Steinfeld in her first movie role could mean big things in the future for the previously unknown eighth grader, who won the role over 15,000 girls who auditioned. In the Supporting Actor category, it will be a battle between Christian Bale (“The Fighter”), John Hawkes (“Winter’s Bone”), Jeremy Renner (“The Town”), Mark Ruffalo (“The Kids are All Right”) and previous winner Geoffrey Rush (“The King’s Speech”). Bale’s nomination is one of seven for the boxing drama, which did not earn an acting nomination for lead Mark Wahlberg, who had to settle for a nod as one of the film’s producers. For the second year there are 10 movies contending for the Best Picture prize, a roster that is doubled from the previous selection of five films. Best Pictures nominees include: “Black Swan,” “The Fighter,” “Inception,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “The King’s Speech,” “127 Hours,” “The Social Network,” “Toy Story 3,” “True Grit” and “Winter’s Bone.” For Best Director it will be Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan”) up against David O’ Russell (“The Fighter”), Tom Hooper (“The King’s Speech”), David Fincher (“The Social Network”), and Joel Coen and Ethan Coen (“True Grit”). Box-office smash and mind-bending adventure “Inception” didn’t earn any acting awards, but it did pick up a raft of nominations in technical categories, including Art Direction, Cinematography, Original Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects and Original Screenplay. Another box-office giant, Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” was shut out of the acting race but racked up several technical nods, including Art Direction, Costume Design and Visual Effects. Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor and partner Atticus Ross were nominated for Original Score for their haunting music for “The Social Network,” and “Tron: Legacy” picked up one nod for Achievement in Sound Editing. Guilt Over Anorexic Model’s Death Drives Mother To Suicide

SMH. The mother of Isabelle Caro, the anorexic French model who died last year, has committed suicide. Marie Caro, whose daughter made headlines around the world after a picture of her gaunt naked body appeared in a shocking ad campaign, took her own life earlier this month after being consumed with ‘enormous guilt’. Isabelle died at the age of 28 in a French hospital on November 17 after she was admitted for severe dehydration. ‘[Marie] felt guilty for having put my daughter in the Bichat Hospital. My daughter did not want to go to that hospital,’ Isabelle’s step-father Christian told Swiss newspaper 20 Minutes. In a statement released after Isabelle’s death, Mr Caro said that his step-daughter had died ‘from the successive consequences of negligence by the medical staff’. He has since launched a legal complaint against the hospital. In 2008 Isabelle released an autobiography called The Little Girl Who Didn’t Want to Get Fat in which she wrote that her mother appeared to resent her growing up. The model famously featured in an ad campaign by Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani in 2007 for an Italian fashion house. Under the headline ‘No Anorexia’, images across newspapers and billboards showed her naked, vertebrae and facial bones protruding. At 5ft 4in, she is reported to have weighed just 4st 8lb (68lbs) at the time. She said she had suffered from anorexia since she was 13 as the result of a ‘difficult childhood’. At the time of the campaign, she wrote: ‘I’ve hidden myself and covered myself for too long. Here’s hoping they’ve both found peace in the Beyond.

Cake, Cage The Elephant Take Top Spots On Billboard

Cake debut at #1, but with lowest sales in SoundScan era. By Gil Kaufman Cake’s John McCrea Photo: Noel Vasquez/ Getty Images Droll Sacramento, California, rockers Cake might never again have the chance to snatch away one of the umpteen records held by platinum darling Taylor Swift . But next week, the group can say they bested Swift, even if it is, in this case, a somewhat dubious distinction. The good news is that Cake’s Showroom of Compassion marks the band’s first #1 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart and their first album to chart in the top 10. The bad news is that their total sales of 44,000 also mark the poorest-selling #1 debut figures for a new album in the modern SoundScan era. (Swift had set the new standard last week, when her Speak Now moved just 52,000 copies .) Another indie band took advantage of the slow new-release traffic to notch a career high. According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, Cage the Elephant’s Thank You, Happy Birthday will come in at #2 on sales of 39,000, an impressive feat for the hard-touring band’s second major-label album. The only other new face in the top 10 is country act Steel Magnolia , whose self-titled effort lands at #7 (28,000). The rest of the top 10: Swift, Speak Now (#3, 35,000), Bruno Mars , Doo-Wops & Hooligans (#4, 32,000), Nicki Minaj , Pink Friday (#5, 32,000), the “Country Strong” soundtrack (#6, 29,000), Rihanna , Loud (#8, 28,000), Mumford & Sons , Sigh No More (#9, 26,000) and Kanye West , My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (#10, 25,000). Otherwise, it’s mostly single- and double-digit dips for the majority of the albums in the top 50, with just a few exceptions, including Cage the Elephant, whose self-titled debut surges back onto the charts at #59 as sales spiked by 113 percent to more than nearly 7,000. Over on the iTunes singles chart, Britney Spears sprints to the top with “Hold It Against Me,” which pushes Mars’ “Grenade” down to #2, followed by Enrique Iglesias ‘ randy “Tonight,” Katy Perry ‘s “Firework,” Wiz Khalifa ‘s “Black and Yellow,” Avril Lavigne ‘s “What the Hell,” the Black Eyed Peas ‘ “The Time (Dirty Bit),” Ke$ha ‘s “We R Who We R,” Lil Wayne ‘s “6 Foot 7 Foot” and Kanye West and Jay Z ‘s “H.A.M.” Gwyneth Paltrow’s well-received “Saturday Night Live” hosting gig surely helped the second collection of “Country Strong” songs hit #1 on the iTunes albums chart (the company does not release specific sales data). Right behind are Mumford & Sons, Cage the Elephant, the first “Country Strong” disc, Cake, the Black Keys ‘ Brothers , Christian act Lecrae ‘s Rehab: The Overdose, Kanye West, Daft Punk ‘s “Tron: Legacy” soundtrack and Mars’ debut album. It should be another modest week next time around, with new releases from the Decemberists , the Script , James Blunt and Social Distortion , as well as the latest Kidz Bop collection. Golden Globes Presenter Michael Douglas Gets Standing Ovation

‘There’s got to be an easier way,’ Best Actor nominee and cancer survivor jokes of warm reception at Sunday’s show. By Jocelyn Vena Michael Douglas receives a standing ovation at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards Photo: NBC/ HFPA Michael Douglas took the stage on Sunday night (January 16) to present the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama. Looking healthy and happy as wife Catherina Zeta-Jones looked on from the audience, the Golden Globe nominee made light of his recent battle with throat cancer. “There’s got to be an easier way to get a standing ovation,” Douglas joked about his warm reception. “Thank you all very much. I’m really very, very happy to be here tonight,” he added. Douglas went on to announce the winner in the category, David Fincher’s Facebook tale “The Social Network,” which took the prize over “Black Swan,” “The King’s Speech,” “Inception” and “The Fighter.” Earlier in the night, Douglas lost for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture to Christian Bale (“The Fighter”). He was nominated for reprising his role as Gordon Gekko in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.” But in spite of the loss, it was a triumphant return for the Hollywood A-lister who recently underwent cancer treatment and just this past week announced on the “Today” show that he’s now cancer-free . “I think the odds are with the tumor gone and what I know about this particular type of cancer, that I’ve got it beat,” Douglas told host Matt Lauer, about six months after he first publicly revealed he had the disease. “I have to check out on a monthly basis now to maintain. I guess there’s not a total euphoria. I’ll probably take a couple of months of getting checked out. But it’s been a wild six-month ride.” We’ve got the Golden Globes covered!
