Golden Globes Presenter Michael Douglas Gets Standing Ovation

‘There’s got to be an easier way,’ Best Actor nominee and cancer survivor jokes of warm reception at Sunday’s show. By Jocelyn Vena Michael Douglas receives a standing ovation at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards Photo: NBC/ HFPA Michael Douglas took the stage on Sunday night (January 16) to present the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama. Looking healthy and happy as wife Catherina Zeta-Jones looked on from the audience, the Golden Globe nominee made light of his recent battle with throat cancer. “There’s got to be an easier way to get a standing ovation,” Douglas joked about his warm reception. “Thank you all very much. I’m really very, very happy to be here tonight,” he added. Douglas went on to announce the winner in the category, David Fincher’s Facebook tale “The Social Network,” which took the prize over “Black Swan,” “The King’s Speech,” “Inception” and “The Fighter.” Earlier in the night, Douglas lost for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture to Christian Bale (“The Fighter”). He was nominated for reprising his role as Gordon Gekko in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.” But in spite of the loss, it was a triumphant return for the Hollywood A-lister who recently underwent cancer treatment and just this past week announced on the “Today” show that he’s now cancer-free . “I think the odds are with the tumor gone and what I know about this particular type of cancer, that I’ve got it beat,” Douglas told host Matt Lauer, about six months after he first publicly revealed he had the disease. “I have to check out on a monthly basis now to maintain. I guess there’s not a total euphoria. I’ll probably take a couple of months of getting checked out. But it’s been a wild six-month ride.” We’ve got the Golden Globes covered! Golden Globe Awards Belong To ‘The Social Network’ And ‘Glee’

‘The Kids Are All Right,’ ‘The Fighter,’ ‘Boardwalk Empire’ also garner multiple awards. By Eric Ditzian The “Glee” cast backstage at the 2011 Golden Globes Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage When the final glasses of champagne had been drained at the 68th Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night (January 16), “The Social Network” and “Glee” sauntered away as the night’s big winners. Nominated in six categories, “Social Network” won four awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director for David Fincher, Best Screenplay for Aaron Sorkin and Original Score. And honored in five separate categories, Fox’s hit musical comedy collected three trophies, Best Comedy Series, Supporting Actor (Chris Colfer) and actress (Jane Lynch). Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical went to “The Kids Are All Right,” one of two awards the film won. In the major TV categories, freshman HBO series “Boardwalk Empire” won Best Drama, while the “Glee” win marked the show’s second-straight best comedy award. To begin the evening, host Ricky Gervais had a beer waiting for him on the podium and took a slug from the sudsy glass before he even opened his mouth. It was just that kind of party. “It’s going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or, as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast,” he joked, setting the tone for a raunchy and fearless emcee performance from start to finish. Long an Oscar front-runner, Natalie Portman won Best Actress – Drama for “Black Swan” and delivered one of the show’s most memorable acceptance speeches. Sporting a noticeable baby bump, she addressed fianc

Christian Therapist Claims She Can Cure Homosexuals By Pairing Them With Straight Men

A therapist in the U.K. says she can cure the ‘homosexual problem’ by sending gay men on therapy sessions with straight men who can show them how to have relations with women. A psychotherapist faces unemployment after trying to ‘convert’ a homosexual man. Lesley Pilkington, 60, a therapist for 20 years, is accused of ‘praying to God’ to ‘heal’ the patient. Mrs Pilkington, will appear at a landmark disciplinary hearing this week where she faces being stripped of her accreditation to the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. The patient, a homosexual rights campaigner, secretly recorded her controversial treatment at two sessions before reporting her to the association. A small group of counsellors believe all men are born heterosexual, but some choose a gay lifestyle which can be changed through therapy. Mrs Pilkington, a devout Christian, told the Sunday Telegraph that her method – Sexual Orientation Change Efforts – is legitimate and effective. Some of the therapy, from the U.S.,involves sending patients away with straight men to ‘encourage their masculinity and ‘in time develop healthy relationships with women.’ But the counselling has been described as ‘absurd’ and the Royal College of Psychiatrists said the ‘so-called treatments of homosexuality’ allow prejudice to flourish. Mrs Pilkington’s 29-year-old son is gay, but she said he simply has a ‘homosexual problem.’ She treated journalist Patrick Strudwick at her private practice based at her home in Chorleywood, Hertfordshire, after he approached her at a Christian conference. He recorded the sessions on a tape machine strapped to his stomach. Asked if she viewed homosexuality as a ‘mental illness, an addiction or an anit-religious phenomenon’, she replied: ‘It is all of that’. In the disciplinary letter sent to her by BACP, she is accused of having an ‘agenda that homosexuality is wrong and that gay people can change and you allegedly attempted to inflict these views on him.’ Mrs Pilkington accused Strudwick of entrapment. She said: ‘He told me was looking for a treatment for being gay. ‘I told him I only work using a Christian biblical framework and he said that was exactly what he wanted.’ Her defense is being funded by the Christian Legal Center which has instructed a leading religious rights barrister to fight the case. It’s interesting to point out that the therapist might be wrong for assuming that homosexuality is a problem, but if a gay man seeks a therapists advice to ‘heal’ him, wouldn’t that mean he views it as one as well. #justsayin Source

Britney Spears’ Pop Rivalries, From Christina Aguilera To Lady Gaga

‘She’s sort of left a lot of these girls in the dust,’ one Spears expert tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Christina Garibaldi Lady Gaga and Britney Spears Photo: Getty Images For more than a decade, Britney Spears has been pitted against some of her pop peers, including Madonna, Jessica Simpson, Christian Aguilera and, most recently, Lady Gaga . She’s publicly buried the hatchet with Madonna and Aguilera — sharing a three-way kiss with the pair at the 2003 VMAs — and never really paid much attention to the hype of other so-called rivalries. “Since the beginning of her career, she’s always been pitted against whatever big pop person there is,” MTV News’ Jim Cantiello explained. “I feel like artists have had rivalries with Britney and she hasn’t really had rivalries with them,” Entertainment Weekly ‘s Leah Greenblatt added. “She’s sort of left a lot of these girls in the dust.” While Brit has managed to stay on top all these years, a new pop princess might give her a run for her money. “I think Gaga’s already been talking about what she is gonna do. She has said that her album is going to be more than just dance songs, and I’m guessing that Britney might be making a different type of album, which is great, because in that sense, Brit and Gaga don’t have to compete,” Perez Hilton said of any potential new rivalry. “They’re each doing their own very distinct thing.” Greenblatt agreed: “It just seems like they’re operating on different wavelengths right now. I mean, Britney’s proven herself over such a longer period of time than Gaga has. I don’t think that Gaga can just wipe her off the pop royalty board.” At the end of the day, it’s not at all about competition, Cantiello explained. “Britney’s going in the super dance route and Gaga’s doing a super personal album,” he said. “It comes a point where we’ve got to stop comparing the two.” Plus, it’s hard for these two to really ever compete with one another, since Gaga has admitted to waving the Britney flag . “I was 13 when Britney became a star,” she said in 2009. “I was amazed by the level of the superfan that Britney created. I want to bring back the feeling that I used to feel.” Who has been Britney’s worthiest adversary? Share your thoughts in the comments! Is Justin Bieber Jewish?

Is Justin Bieber Jewish? Is Natalie Portman’s fiancee, Benjamin Millipied, Jewish? Based on my Web research, neither one is Jewish. However, there are many people wondering these questions and doing what curious people do in the Digital Age — turning to Google. There are two components to blogging I enjoy most. First, I love writing. Second, I love looking at the analytics to see through which portals visitors have arrived at my blog. Looking at the referral statistics, there is an overwhelming number of Web surfers who are referred to my blog after inquiring about a celebrity’s faith; specifically, whether they are Jewish. While Jewish people may only account for less than 2 percent of the U.S. population, we have provided society with a vastly disproportionate number of celebrities — from actors and musicians to authors, producers and directors. No, Jews don’t own Hollywood in the antisemitic canard conspiracy theory way, but there are certainly a lot of “Members of the Tribe” in Hollywood. When celebrities do the things that only Jewish people have traditionally done, everyone wants to know if they are Jewish or just playing the part. For instance, Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) has been embraced by Madonna, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, and Brittany Spears, but none of them were born Jewish or have converted to the faith. Robin Williams does a great Yiddish accent on stage while telling Jewish jokes, but he’s an Episcopalian. The former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson has announced plans to open a kosher restaurant, but converted to Islam. The French dance choreographer Benjamin Millipied will marry the Israeli Natalie Portman, with Israeli roots, but he doesn’t appear to be of the Jewish faith. And though the teen pop sensation Justin Bieber is not Jewish, he has a ritual of saying the most important statement to the Jewish people before each of his concerts. It turns out that his agent, Scott “Scooter” Braun, taught Bieber the “Shema Yisrael” and now the 16-year-old says those Hebrew words (in addition to a Christian prayer) before taking the stage. It’s human nature to try and know as much as we can about our celebrities. So, it should come as no surprise that fans are curious as to whether Bieber’s Jewish or if Natalie Portman is marrying within the Jewish faith. After all, a person’s faith can be a private matter and as the National Enquirer has always said when it comes to celebrities, “Inquiring minds want to know.” (c) Rabbi Jason A. Megan Fox, Nicole Richie, Alicia Keys and Carrie Underwood are other brides who dazzled this year. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry and Russell Brand Photo: Dave J Hogan/Getty Images In 2010, some of music’s biggest names tied the knot, and some of Hollywood’s favorite starlets said goodbye to their fellow single ladies and married the men of their dreams. Some celebs married on the down low, and some married in over-the-top affairs, but they all made us envious of the lives of the rich and famous. Here, MTV News takes a look back at the most memorable weddings of the year: Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green surprised everyone when they married in a hush-hush ceremony on June 24, just weeks after they confirmed their engagement. There was no Hollywood pomp and circumstance. The pair, who had their ups and downs over the course of their courtship, married at the Four Seasons Resort on Hawaii’s Big Island, the same hotel where Green popped the question to the starlet. Katy Perry and Russell Brand Months after their flirtation at the 2009 VMAs led to a full-fledged romance, the couple got engaged on New Year’s Eve while vacationing in India. As 2010 rolled along, Perry and Brand didn’t give too many details away about their nuptials, which would eventually take place in India in October. Though the ceremony was conducted by a Christian minister, the couple paid homage to their wedding’s setting by including traditional Indian rituals. And while we have yet to see what the dress looked like, we know Perry wore a dove-gray gown with lace sleeves designed by Elie Saab. Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher Carrie and Mike did it big when they married at the Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Plantation in Georgia in July. The wedding reportedly cost $500,000 and included celebrity pals like Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as wedding guests. The country superstar donned a Chantilly lace gown by Monique Lhuillier as she said “I do” in front of a reported 250 people. Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz Alicia and Swizz married in July in front of the backdrop of the Mediterranean. The very pregnant singer and her super-producer love said their vows in Vera Wang and Tom Ford, respectively. Deepak Chopra presided over the nuptials. Weeks later the pair welcomed their son, Egypt Daoud Dean , into the world. Nicole Richie and Joel Madden After two kids and four years together, Nicole and Joel tied the knot in December. The guest list was a who’s who of the music world including No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani, celebrity DJ Samantha Ronson and Madden’s twin and Good Charlotte bandmate, Benji, and an elephant attending the glamorous wedding. Reverend Run of Run-DMC presided over the ceremony. Which was your favorite wedding of 2010? Talk about it in the comments. Related Videos MTV News’ 2010 Superlatives
