Tim Urban Says Shirtless Picture ‘Helped More Than It Hurt’ On ‘American Idol’

‘I don’t perform for the people who don’t like me; I perform for the people who want me to be onstage,’ he says. By Katie Byrne Tim Urban performs on “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Tim Urban might have lasted on “American Idol” longer than fans expected, but those extra weeks actually gave him a chance to redeem himself after being lambasted by the judges week after week. But he reached a little too high with his cover of the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Better Days” during “Idol Gives Back” week and was sent packing Wednesday night. During a conference call with reporters after his elimination, he opened up about his good attitude through all the criticism, Vote for the Worst’s support and that shirtless picture . Q : Simon complimented you on your attitude in the competition, that you took everything positively. What did it mean to you that they recognized not only how you grew as a performer, but also appreciated the way you came across? A : That’s actually something that was my goal on the show. It was not just to improve as an artist, but to just be a very good contestant and to take what everybody was saying and to just treat the situation — not let it get me down, but to take what they were saying and work at it and improve, but also, not to really complain or to talk back. Just take the criticism and work from it. It was cool to get that recognition about that. It’s something that I’m very proud of. Q : What would you say to your critics who thought you only lasted as long as you did because of your good looks and charisma? A : Oh, wow. I don’t think that I would respond to that. It seems that people just like to take somebody and then find something that they don’t like about them and talk about it. I get that. It’s part of dealing with the industry. It’s part of being in the spotlight. So people are going to say that, but people are going to say that about pretty much anybody. You’ll find people that don’t like any artist out there, and so you have to deal with it, shrug it off. I don’t perform for the people who don’t like me; I perform for the people who want me to be onstage, so those are the people that I try to worry about. Q : What did you think when the shirtless picture of you hit the Web? A : I kind of knew it would come out eventually. I didn’t really expect it to be as big as it was, because it kind of blew up really fast. That was kind of a little crazy, but I just took it in stride. It’s part of the show. Everybody is looking for something in the backstory. Everybody is looking for an extra story, so it’s just one of the stories that people decided to run with. I just try not to worry about it too much. Q : Do you think it helped or hindered you? A : Kind of both. I definitely heard that it helped, but then there are also people who might see that and not take me seriously, just because of that type of thing. I don’t know; I think it probably helped more than it hurt, but I don’t really know for sure. Q : Last year, we heard a lot about contestants’ religious backgrounds and their experiences singing in church. How has your religion influenced your time on “American Idol”? A : My personal belief has really shaped pretty much every aspect of my life. I grew up in a very Christian home, and that set of morals and just that upbringing has shaped me musically, has shaped me as a person, and just, I don’t know, it’s kind of hard to explain, because it’s pretty much who I am. So it’s not just a part of my life. Q : What did you think about VoteForTheWorst.com backing you? A : I’m not excited that I was on their website. I think that it’s really not anything that anybody should be proud of. I really didn’t like being on there, and basically I was working my hardest to get off of it. Yes, I’m actually kind of sad that I was on that website at all. Q : What do you want to do next? A few people have floated the idea of you teaming up with Disney or appearing on “Glee.” A : You know, I would love to do music. I would love to pursue that, and I’m hoping that that door opens up, but I also have always had a desire to act, and to just be in that side of the entertainment industry as well. So I would be really excited if I got the opportunity to do that as well. I’m just waiting to see what happens, but I’m open to any of that at this point. I’m really just excited about the whole thing. Were you sad to see Tim go? Will you listen to his post-“Idol” music? Let us know in the comments below! Phoenix Talk Soundtrack To New Sofia Coppola Film, ‘Somewhere’

‘This is the first time we feel [that] the music fits to the picture,’ bassist Deck D’Arcy says. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Phoenix Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images Earlier this year, fresh off winning a Grammy for Best Alternative Album (and having an interesting exchange with “Jersey Shore” star Snooki on the red carpet, Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars told BBC Radio that his band has written a “very minimal” soundtrack for his girlfriend Sofia Coppola’s upcoming film “Somewhere.” “It was more about trying to make a sound that fits with a Ferrari and the city of Los Angeles,” Mars told the BBC about the soundtrack. “It was more of an engineer work than a composer.” It sounded intriguing, so when MTV Radio caught up with Mars’ Phoenix bandmates, they asked about the “Somewhere” score — which, according to press release from Focus Features , stars Stephen Dorff as a “bad-boy actor” who gets an unexpected visit from his 11-year-old daughter — they tried to pry some additional details out of ’em. Turns out, there’s going to be a whole lot more than Ferrari sounds on the soundtrack: The band’s song “Love Like a Sunset” also features heavily. “She asked us to do some music, very in the spirit of ‘Love Like a Sunset,’ so we tried to put that track and elements of the track in the movie, and it worked well,” Phoenix guitarist Christian Mazzalai said. “And then we wrote very small pieces of music, very minimal music for the movie too. … We’re very proud of it.” “This is the first time we feel [that] the music fits to the picture,” bassist Deck D’Arcy added. “We’ve [been on] many soundtracks before, and it’s always weird for us — producers must like [our songs], of course it if they use them — but for us, it’s always weird to see them in the films.” Mazzalai and D’Arcy wouldn’t divulge more about the soundtrack (though they did say “Somewhere” would be in theaters “sometime in the fall,”) and while this isn’t the first time their music has been used by Coppola in a film — their “Too Young” was featured in her 2003 film “Lost in Translation” — this is the first time they’ve tried their hands at actually writing a score. And they admit it’s a process they’re still getting used to. “It was like in ‘Lost in Translation,’ when they used our song in a scene, it’s funny, but it’s weird for us,” Mazzalai laughed. “We didn’t believe it. So this is the first time we feel like the images match the music. But we still don’t believe it.” Related Artists Phoenix

What 60 Minutes Missed in Uganda AIDS Story

This past weekend, 60 Minutes aired a story about the $15 billion anti-AIDS initiative known as PEPFAR, the US President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, which was launched by President Bush in 2003. For the story, correspondent Bob Simon traveled to Uganda, a country that has lost more than a million lives to AIDS and has since benefited greatly from PEPFAR. But I noticed one glaring omission in the piece. When Simon interviewed Pastor Martin Ssempa, one of Uganda’s most well-known Christian ministers, he failed to mention Ssempa’s role in the country’s controversial anti-gay bill. It’s true that Ssempa has been one of Uganda’s leading HIV activists and that over the years his preaching of an abstinence-only approach has made him a darling of many US evangelicals. But more recently, Ssempa has become the Pied Piper of Uganda’s anti-gay campaign, leading rallies and protests to push the legislation through. We're in the process of editing the piece we shot on Uganda's anti-gay bill for the upcoming season of Vanguard. And where the two stories intersect is over the question of what effect anti-gay legislation might have on the fight against HIV/AIDS in Uganda. Many health care professionals we spoke to worry that the bill could have a very negative impact on whatever strides the country has made to combat HIV/AIDS. We’ll be exploring this question and more in the upcoming documentary. Follow the Vanguard team on Twitter. Today Is Dyngus Day!

ndtogo Today is Dyngus Day.  It is also known as Wet Monday and Easter Monday. Dyngus Day is celebrated as a holiday in Christian, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox cultures.  This is the day after Easter Sunday. Dyngus Day is traditionally celebrated in Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.  Early morning, boys awake girls by pouring  bucket of water on the girls head and striking them on legs using thin twigs that are made either of willow or birch.  This is to mark the end of the Lenten Season. Dyngus early custom was about exchanging gifts usually with decorated eggs. If one peron did not bring any eggs ready, one has to endure water splashing. Later, it has changed fully-water focused and the exchange of gifts is almost forgotten. Today is Dyngus Day.  It is also known as Wet Monday and Easter Monday. Rape Play Video Game of the Day

You geek gamers probably already know about Rape Play, you’ve probably already got all the cheat codes and have finished the shit, but I love this shit, I’ve heard about it the last month and the concept is genius but not as genius as this Fox Report with a psychologist trying to ruin our fucking fun by saying that Raping our boss who fired us is gonna taint us, and my expert opinion is that the bitch needs to get raped, seriously she’s so uptight and serious with all her theories about how this shit is going to turn us into school shooters, when really the worst I see happening is that you end up teaching your boss a fucking lesson for not following traditional gender roles, where we’re the fucking boss….here’s a better video with some more footage of it that I hope sells you on the shit and gets you downloading it…. All I gotta say is let Japan be fuckign Japanese, what the fuck do we know about their culture to say shit is wrong according to our Christian bullshit philosophy…Fuck off America.
