American Atheist Editor: Christian Daycare is ‘Child Abuse’

“He’s got the whole world in his hands?” To one atheist, it’s more like ‘He’s got the whole world under his thumb.” David Smalley, the editor of American Atheist magazine and a self-described “civil rights activist,” wrote in a  personal blog post June 7  that Christian daycare “a form of child abuse.” “In short, by starting your child off in a Christian environment, you are heading them down a path of forced ignorance,” Smalley wrote. “At least let your child begin in a secular world, and if he or she chooses Christianity after an age of accountability, then so be it. But forcing them to learn things as fact that you don’t even know to be true is a form of child abuse: inducing psychosis with thoughts of good and evil watching over them, as if they are constantly being graded or evaluated.” Smalley further stereotyped and generalized religion-based childcare by suggesting “it’s bad for positive self-esteem, and slows social development later in life.” American Atheist magazine is published by American Atheists, which calls itself “the premiere organization laboring for the civil liberties of Atheists, and the total, absolute separation of government and religion.” Smalley’s post appeared on his blog, Dogma Debate. He also hosts an Internet radio show of the same name.

Daily Kos Whacks ‘Eight Most Irritating Conservative Celebrities,’ Demeans Them as No-Talent ‘Rejects’

The conservative newspaper recently made a list of the “Eight Most Irritating Liberal Celebrities.” They were in order, from the top: Roger Ebert, Rosie O’Donnell, Michael Moore, Joy Behar, Janeane Garofalo, Al Gore, Matt Damon, and Robert Redford. Gore’s not quite a match, since he’s not an entertainer. You wouldn’t call his doom-laden slide-show documentary “entertainment.” This list inspired “King One Eye” at the Daily Kos to match that effort with “The Eight More Irritating Conservative Celebrities.” The writer, Mark Howard, also cross-posted at his vicious media-criticism website called News Corpse , where he posts with the byline of “Mark.” He suggested conservative celebrities are all unemployed, no-talent losers: “They ought to think twice before provoking a “Battle of the Irritating Stars.” when they have a far more annoying roster of vexatious celebrities. And it is notable that most of their idols are rejects who have no current career opportunities save for appearances on Fox News and at Tea Parties.” The list: Ben Stein This hybrid actor/pundit’s career was literally built on his being irritating (Bueller?). In the years following that electrifying debut, Stein escalated the breadth of his annoying personality to embrace a free market fantasy that revealed the shallowness of his reputed expertise in economics. Throw in a heap of sexism and a willingness to whore himself out as a spokesperson for disreputable credit schemes and you have a recipe for chronic distemper. Mel Gibson Gibson demonstrated his theatrical gifts early in his career. His roles in “The Year of Living Dangerously” and “Mad Max” proved he could tackle depth, action, and humor. Unfortunately, his filmography after that became an almost non-stop succession of vengeance, violence, and scenery chomping as a stand-in for emoting. But what’s worse was his submersion into cultist Christianity and anti-Antisemitism. Nothing is quite as irritating as overt hate-speech. Chuck Norris Having to watch this no-talent hack embarrass himself through his atrocious movies is bad enough. But having to endure him on the campaign trail is just cruel. His lame attempts to portray Mike Huckabee as a superhero fell as flat as the notion of himself still claiming that mantle despite his advanced age and decrepitude. Stephen Baldwin What can I say? Baldwin was never not irritating. He built on that reputation by starring in unreality shows and begging for donations to “restore” himself from bankruptcy. Clearly Stephen’s brothers hogged all the talent in the family and selfishly left him a miserable loser and a wretched failure. Come to think of it, he may be more pathetic than irritating. Jon Voight This one-hit wonder has managed to keep his name in the papers by having a very public feud with his more famous (and more talented) daughter, Angelina Jolie, and by drinking the Glenn Beck Kool-Aid by the gallon. With a prominent ignorance of history and government, Voight still mouths off about socialist conspiracies and Constitutional abuses that exist only his Beck-infected brain. Dennis Miller One of the saddest stories in the entertainment world is the tale of the once promising newcomer who winds up a pathetic has-been and resorts to desperately grasping for attention by any means he can muster. Even if it means becoming a toady for the likes of Bill O’Reilly and dressing up as a born again neo-con. Miller’s new persona is devoutly conservative, but he retains his penchant for indecipherably obscure references. Listening to him like sitting through a Xenophanic allocution on Byzantine incandescence. Ted Nugent Approaching the nadir of irritatability is the Motor City Jackass himself. Nugent has become a cartoonish proponent of guns and animal massacre. His rants against government spending and social welfare are high decibel testimonials to selfishness and coldhearted disinterest in anyone less fortunate than he is. During the 2008 campaign Nugent brandished machine guns on stage and made obscene threats directed at Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and other Democrats. His behavior crossed the line from irritating to abusive, hostile, and unconscionably grotesque. He concluded with video of former Saturday Night Live star Victoria Jackson . Bozell Column: Bigotry Central

It’s been two months since Comedy Central censored Mohammed out of their cartoon “South Park.” Even the utterance of the name was bleeped. The blog Revolution Muslim quoted the world’s most notorious terrorist as an inspirational figure. “As Osama bin Laden said with regard to the cartoons of Denmark, ‘If there is no check in the freedom of your words, then let your hearts be open to the freedom of our actions.’” But there has been no ceasefire in Comedy Central’s war on Christianity. The attacks on Catholic Americans just keep coming. On “The Daily Show” on June 17, fake correspondent Samantha Bee interviewed two priests and two nuns who are watchdogging Goldman Sachs for a liberal interfaith group. Jon Stewart started the Catholic-bashing in his introduction: “Sometimes it’s easy to spot the villain in a story. Sometimes it’s not.” Bee joked to the priests and nuns: “Jesus wants us all to be rich. The Pope gets it. Have you even seen his ceiling?” Later, she joked that these “churchies” are “maybe not the best messengers.” When they suggested Goldman Sachs needed more transparency, Bee stressed with a laugh track: “Hold on. The Catholic Church wants more transparency.” Referring to this spring’s round of media investigations and church statements on priest sexual abuse, she said “Wouldn’t it be better to just lay low for a little while?” She narrowed her eyes and lectured a financial analyst: “Goldman Sachs is losing a P.R. war to the Catholic Church . That is not easy to do.” Christians should and do allow themselves to be the objects of good-natured comedy, but there is clearly a nasty, even vicious undercurrent here. In an interview on the National Public Radio show “Fresh Air” on June 2, Bee revealed that she loves the church-mocking as a “terribly lapsed” Catholic. “So it is joyful for me to do that. That is pure pleasure for me, I will say.” The comedians appearing on Comedy Central are also piling on Catholics. On June 11, the Catholic Church was mocked in a special featuring comedian Paul F. Tompkins . “Things started to just kind of unravel for her and it made less and less sense,” Tompkins said of his mother turning to atheism. “She said, ‘One day I woke up and I realized it was all just s–t.’ Very eloquently put, mother dear.” He described the steady, subtle erosion of faith. “And so years and years go by and then one day you wake up and say, ‘Hey, what happened to all that crazy junk I used to believe in? Boy, I sure like having my Sundays back.’” That was mild compared to the comedian calling himself Louis C.K., who appeared on “The Daily Show” on June 16 . Jon Stewart promoted him as “one of my all-time favorite comedians.” Late in the segment, as they were joking about being bleeped by censors, Louis said “I was going to say that the pope f—ed boys and I didn’t have time.” After the laughs, he insisted he was serious: “I do think he does. Can I defend that before we go away?…Well here’s the thing. He lets other people do it,” and you are either outraged, or you are participating in it. In this bigot’s mind, and many virulent anti-Catholic minds, Pope Benedict’s myriad of apologies and denunciations don’t display an ounce of outrage. He was not kidding. On YouTube, there’s a five-minute video he made for his own website LouisCK.com where he interviews a fake “church spokesman” in priestly garb. The man declares “The Catholic Church is an ancient, worldwide organization dedicated to the constant goal of f—ing young boys.” Louis C.K. presents a fake letter from the Pope that says “We at the Catholic Church f— boys all day long. That’s all we ever do. Signed, the Pope.” The “spokesman” he was interviewing proclaimed that “we’re very thorough” and the priests have raped every Catholic boy who’s come through a church door. With a smile, this alleged comic, a lapsed Catholic, “remembers” that why, yes, he was raped. You don’t make a skit like this for laughs. You make it to propagate a lie and unleash your personal hatred. But these Catholic-bashing comedians aren’t even controversial or “edgy.” Apparently, smearing the global leader of the world’s largest church just makes you a “truth” teller. Louis C.K. had a sitcom on HBO, and he’s now publicizing his new one for FX. He is so mainstream that CBS News just used him for a largely warm and fuzzy Father’s Day commentary on their show “Sunday Morning.” That’s how acceptable anti-Catholic bigotry has become.

Garofalo: Bible a ‘Work of Fiction’ for ‘Child-Like Audience’

Sometime-comedian Janeane Garofalo never passes up an opportunity to slam conservatives or, apparently, Christianity. The Huffington Post gave her an opportunity June 24 to kill two birds with one stone. In an  interview  promoting her upcoming special on a network called EPIX, Garofalo compared the most widely-read book of all time, the Bible, to a Bill O’Reilly autobiography and a children’s book authored by former President Bush. When asked by a Huffington Post reader which of those three publications she’d rather read, Garofalo said, “Actually that’s like six and one half, that is six and one half right there.” Presumably, she meant to use the popular idiom, “six of one, half a dozen of the other.” “That’s just three works of fiction targeted to a child-like audience so any, all, any one, none,” Garofalo said. “I don’t know how to read either, so that’s kind of a drag.” During the interview, Garofalo also expressed disappointment in President Obama. “It’s a drag that he’s such a conservative,” she lamented. Garofalo’s made her disdain for religion clear in the past. During a June 16 appearance on “The Joy Behar Show” on Headline News, she called prayer “anti-intellectual.” Behar later defended Garofalo on ABC’s “The View,” saying the comedian should have said prayer was “un-intellectual.” Garofalo has also built a long resume of attacking conservatives. She has compared the GOP to neo-Nazis  and called Tea Party protestors ” functionally retarded ,” and ” racist backward motherf***ers .” She has called the stable of Fox News anchors and hosts, as well as conservative talk radio hosts,  liars .

Religion Blogger Shreds Newsweek’s Take on ‘Saint Sarah’ Palin

“You have been weighed in the balances and found wanting.” That’s how the biblical prophet Daniel interpreted the writing on the wall that heralded the imminent demise of the Babylonian Empire. It could also sum up journalist Sarah Pulliam Bailey’s take on Lisa Miller’s “Saint Sarah” piece in Newsweek (emphases mine): Journalists have long been puzzled over Sarah Palin’s popularity. In November, Newsweek took a stab at the trend with its provocative cover of Palin in running clothes: “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Sarah Palin: How Sarah Palin Hurts the GOP And the Country.” Lisa Miller’s thesis is compelling if it is true, but journalists usually rely on hard facts, polls, maybe interviews with political scientists to prove their points. Unfortunately, Miller’s article contains none of these to support her theory that Palin is somehow the new leader of the Christian Right. Instead, she strings together a bunch of anecdotes and quotes to prove what she thinks is happening.   Pulliam Bailey devoted most of her June 14 Get Religion blog post to fisking Miller’s argument. Here’s just a sample (emphases are the author’s): The story leads with Palin’s classic story of how she decided to give birth to her son Trig. Palin has already overshared: nothing makes a person, let alone a politician, appear more vulnerable, more ordinary, and more unambiguously female than a scene in a bathroom where she pees on a stick. But then she defies a generation of pro-life activists who preached that the life of the fetus is sacred, no matter what an individual woman wants. Is there any indication that Palin doesn’t think the fetus is sacred? Lots of women who chose to give birth give testimonies about their decision-making process. Is she actually defying other activists? Let’s face it: the Trig story is a women’s story, the kind girlfriends share over coffee or in church. It has all the familiar elements of evangelical testimony: tribulation and dread; trust in God; and, finally, great blessings. Many Christian women loathe Palin , Who? Why? of course, and many men love her, Who? Why? but a certain kind of conservative, Bible-believing woman worships her. Who? Is it only Bible-believing women who worship her? And really? Worships her? To a smaller number, she is a prophet, ordained by God for a special role in the cosmic battle against the forces of evil . What forces of evil? Who thinks she was ordained by God? Does this smaller number think the political arena is the cosmic battle? Perhaps the biggest failure on Miller’s part? Pulliam Bailey notes that Miller insisted that Palin has her faults, but the left is partially to blame for her ascent. Its native mistrust of religion, of conservative believers in particular, left the gap that Palin now fills. The GetReligion.org writer then argued that, “Perhaps Miller should have spent more time writing about this part of the story. It would be more compelling to read more about the left’s mistrust of religion that left a gap.” Given Newsweek’s cutesy take on “Saint Sarah,” it was only fitting that an analysis critical of it should end with a biblical allusion. Pulliam Bailey didn’t disappoint with the observation that the financially-struggling magazine is intent on “making Palin in its own image”: If Palin is really leading the religious right, has anyone captured photo evidence of Palin’s flock? The accompanying slideshow , titled “Cult of Palin,” features Palin condoms, porn movies and strip clubs. The slideshow does nothing to back Miller’s thesis about Palin’s new found leadership of the religious right. Maybe that’s because Newsweek is making Palin in its own image.

Miley Cyrus in a See Through Dress of the Day

I don’t know what is going on in this picture of Miley Cyrus or where it is fun but apparently she’s prepping for some photoshoot, and I don’t really care, because I’m impressed with her hustle… Seriously, I like whatever it is that she is doing with her career, no matter how obvious or text book it is, cuz really a half naked Miley Cyrus at 17, is better than one taking the traditional country route for the Christians, cuz not only is Christianity an outdated theology, but it’s also boring as fuck…. I’ve never even liked Miley. I used to find her ugly, boring and I’d tease her sexual relationship with Disney Execs that made her millions, supporting her young whore attitude, without actually knowing whether she was actually a whore or if that was just fantasy cuz she was so prude and boring….but now, I know and I guess you always did, cuz you’re a fucking dirtbag who has been deprived of teen pussy cuz the USA doesn’t like that shit, while Canada and the UK does…maybe you should move.

O’Reilly Discusses Comedy Central’s ‘JC,’ MRC’s Coalition to Ask Advertisers to Not Support It

On last night’s “O’Reilly Factor,” host Bill O’Reilly and guest analyst Arthel Neville discussed the possibly impending Comedy Central show “JC” – as in Jesus Christ. Given the network’s past treatment of Christianity, the portend for this show is hardly positive. Which is why the Media Research Center has put together a coalition to ask advertisers to publicly pledge to not underwrite/support the show.  Citizens Against Religious Bigotry (CARB) (which Ms. Neville graciously mentioned by name) is made up of many organizations – made up of Christians, Jews and Muslims – who would like to see religion not be the butt of raunchy/tasteless jokes, and who don’t think America’s advertisers should help fund said alleged humor. A petition to advertisers (to be found on the CARB website ) has garnered more than 115,000 signatures thus far. And if you aren’t familiar with how Comedy Central does Christianity, watch this video and you’ll get an idea of what can be expected should JC ever make it to the airwaves.
