‘Water For Elephants’ Clip: Robert Pattinson Plans His Getaway

In MTV-premiered sneak peek, RPattz asks Reese Witherspoon to run away with him. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson in “Water For Elephants Photo: 20th Century Fox What would you do if Robert Pattinson asked you to run away with him? That’s the question Reese Witherspoon is compelled to answer in a brand-new exclusive clip from “Water for Elephants” that we debuted during “MTV First: Robert Pattinson,” a 30-minute live chat with the actor on Friday (March 18). The clip comes at a point in the movie when Jacob (Pattinson) and Marlena (Witherspoon) are considering fleeing the circus in which they both work. The pair have fallen for each other, though Marlena is married to an unstable animal trainer named August (Christoph Waltz). His life at risk, Jacob is planning to jump from the circus’ train. “If we don’t get too far, there’s a hotel in Salem,” Marlena tells him. “But don’t stay longer than the night.” “Just come with me,” he says to her considerable vexation. “You think there’s nothing out there for you, but there is. You just can’t see it.” “Jacob, you don’t understand. I can’t. He’ll find me,” she tells him, referring to her husband. “Marlena, there’s a better kind of life that’s meant for you,” he answers. “Whether that life is with me or not, whether you love me or not, it doesn’t matter. But it’s got to be now.” Jacob then reaches out for her hand, offering up a smoldering look that would make Edward Cullen proud. After a few seconds of hesitation, Marlena takes his hand in hers. Wouldn’t you? What happens after that? You’ll just have to find out when the movie hits theaters April 22. Quentin Tarantino’s Spaghetti Western: What We Know So Far

Details are beginning to fall in place for director’s ‘Inglourious Basterds’ follow-up. By Eric Ditzian Quentin Tarantino Photo: Charles Eshelman/ FilmMagic For years, Quentin Tarantino has been talking about the kooky idea of making a spaghetti western-esque film that explores American slavery. Now multiple reports suggest he might be moving forward with a project in a similar vein. Nothing’s confirmed yet, of course, but all this chatter does seem to indicate that Tarantino’s next production following the Oscar-winning, $300 million-grossing success of 2009’s “Inglourious Basterds” will, in fact, be a spaghetti western. There have been, until now, numerous projects the filmmaker was said to be considering , though he has long stated a desire to explore the western genre. “I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time,” Tarantino told us late in ’09 of the slavery pic. “That’s definitely in the garden, for lack of a better metaphor. That is definitely one of my roses.” So what do we know so far? Back in 2007, Tarantino spoke at length to Britain’s Telegraph about that project, calling it the Southern equivalent of a western. “I want to do movies that deal with America’s horrible past with slavery and stuff but do them like spaghetti westerns, not like big issue movies,” he said. “I want to do them like they’re genre films, but they deal with everything that America has never dealt with because it’s ashamed of it, and other countries don’t really deal with because they don’t feel they have the right to.” Tarantino, instead, chose to explore an alt-history take on World War II with “Basterds.” When MTV News caught up with him late last year, he confessed that he still hadn’t committed to his next project, though he did say that rumors of taking on an adaptation of “The Shadow” were untrue. Only in recent days has talk of a spaghetti western, devoid of a connection to slavery, picked up steam. Deadline reported that Tarantino said he has completed the script for the new movie and that the writing, unlike his work on “Basterds” and “Kill Bill,” came together quite quickly. Meanwhile, the actor Franco Nero gave an Italian-language interview at the Los Angeles Italia festival in which he said that talent has already been coalescing around the project, including himself, Keith Carradine and Treat Williams. “It’s a movie that contains humor, lots of action, but also a great plot,” Nero said. Ain’t It Cool News picked up on the news and added some intriguing details — most intriguingly that Christoph Waltz, who won an Oscar for his turn as a cold-blooded Nazi in “Basterds,” would also star in the flick. According to AICN, the script is not based on any existing material but is an original script and will potentially begin production in Spain and Italy later this year. ‘Green Hornet’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Superhero film took a winding path to the big screen, and we’ve been there the whole way. By Eric Ditzian Seth Rogen in “Green Hornet” Photo: Sony Pictures When did the story of the Seth Rogen-starring, Michel Gondry-directed “Green Hornet” begin? Does it go all the way back to the superhero’s adventures on 1930s-era radio, or does it begin with the 1966 TV series that made Bruce Lee a star? Perhaps instead we should begin in the early ’90s with Hollywood’s attempt to revive the dormant franchise. There are enough twists and turns there to form the basis of an entire master class in major-studio development hell. The title role, in its various incarnations, was reportedly at one time or another offered to everyone from George Clooney to Greg Kinnear. Directors (including Gondry in the late ’90s) and screenwriters came and went. Studios traded rights to the property. Then, in stepped Rogen and writing partner Evan Goldberg with an outline for the movie in fall 2007. More than three bump-and-bruise-filled years later, “The Green Hornet” finally hit theaters Friday (January 14). How did it get there? What do you need to know before checking out the action/comedy about a rich kid named Britt Reid who turns himself into a superhero with the help of sidekick/genius Kato? All your questions will be answered with MTV News’ “Green Hornet” cheat sheet. The Green Hornet Meets Red-Faced Fans Initial fan reaction to the pairing of Rogen with the superhero material was not kind, and the vitriol seemed never to let up. “People just love bitching,” he laughed during a July ’08 interview with MTV News. “Hopefully, people will see it and say, ‘Oh, yeah, they can kind of do that, maybe we’ll give them an easier time.’ ” Seeking to attract some action-flick cred, Rogen recruited Stephen Chow (“Kung Fu Hustle”) both to direct and to star as Kato . Seeking as well to establish himself as a believable superhero, Rogen hit the gym and began to shed a lot of weight. Then, just like that, Chow was gone as director . And Rogen was screwed . But he and Sony Pictures regrouped, signed Gondry and pushed forward with the project. You’re Perfect, Now Change Nothing, it seemed, would come easy for “Green Hornet.” In summer ’09, the film’s release date was pushed back from June 25 to July 9, 2010. Then Chow skipped out on playing Kato . And then Nicolas Cage, who was set to play the film’s main villain, ditched the production too. The release was once again pushed back , this time to winter 2010. “Every possible obstacle came in our way at one point or another, to the point that it really just got ridiculous,” Rogen told us later. The crew again regrouped, signing Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz to play the villain , alongside Jay Chou as Kato and Cameron Diaz as Reid’s assistant . Production began in fall ’09. “I tried to be very precise,” Gondry told MTV News during the South by Southwest Film Festival last March. “I tried to redefine fights in my own style.” Seriously, Though, Change Again! By spring of last year, things were getting ridiculous. Sony had decided to convert the film to 3-D and yet again pushed back the release date : January 14, 2011, it would be. No matter! The first official image popped up online in June, followed by the trailer . The footage was funny, eye-popping stuff. Hey, maybe this thing wasn’t going to be so bad after all? The second trailer , which dropped in November, backed up that initial impression. And when audiences started to check out early screenings of the film, it turned out they actually liked the movie, that it neatly balanced comedy and action, that it wasn’t, as so many Web-based bloviators suggested, the worst movie in the history of the world. “It is nice that people actually have to base their assumptions on the movie now and not just what they think the movie is going to be like,” Rogen laughed. Robert Pattinson’s ‘Water For Elephants’ Trailer Arrives

Reese Witherspoon’s circus performer tantalizes RPattz in tragic Depression-era love story. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson in the “Water For Elephants” trailer Photo: FOX We’ve seen Robert Pattinson’s side-buzzed ‘do . We’ve checked out pictures of RPattz and Reese Witherspoon smooching on the set. We’ve heard Witherspoon call her co-star “extraordinarily attractive.” Now we’ve gotten our first official look at the trailer for “Water for Elephants,” Pattinson and Witherspoon’s love story set in a Depression-era circus. The footage buries the lede somewhat: It’s a full 37 seconds before we get our first look at RPattz as Jacob Janowski. But the trailer neatly contextualizes the storyline. The film is told as a flashback, with Jacob’s 90-something-year-old self looking back on the events of his youth. Back then, he found himself in the midst of some unnamed circus-based tragedy. What happened, we don’t know (well, unless we read the book), but we have a feeling this story isn’t going to end well. The trailer waits almost another 20 seconds to introduce us to Witherspoon’s character, Marlena Rosenbluth, an elegant performer with a knack for getting horses to do near-magical feats. Pattinson is immediately intrigued by her, calling her a “beautiful woman [who] deserves a beautiful life.” The only problem is that she’s married to Christoph Waltz’s August Rosenbluth, a dark-minded animal trainer. No matter! Jacob and Marlena fall in love and together begin to look for a way to create a life with each other. But where can they go? As Marlena tells him, in the circus, “I’m a star. Out there, I got nothing.” Directed by Francis Lawrence (“I Am Legend”) and based on the New York Times best-seller, “Water for Elephants” hits theaters on April 15. Farting Man-Boy, Elaborate Serial Killer and Bono Among New Oscar Voters

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — a group so white, old and out-of-touch you’d think you’re at a Republican convention — has decided perhaps more people would watch their dog and pony show if their choices were a little more hip. In an effort to pump fresh plasma into their dusty veins, the AMPAS has inducted a whole slew of new Academy members. Among the rarefied few are Adam Sandler, Christoph Waltz, Tobin Bell of Saw infamy, along with some much needed non-white, non-male voices like Mo’Nique, Zoe Saldana and Gabourey Sidibe. On the other side of the camera, noted-Miley Cyrus despoiler Adam Shankman is on the list, as are Bono and The Edge, and Christian Bale’s favorite cinematographer , Shane “f*cking distracting!” Hurlbut. Check out the full 135-person list after the jump.

‘Green Hornet’ Trailer Showcases Seth Rogen’s Action-Hero Debut

Rogen wrote and stars in the 2011 film based on the classic pulp hero. By Rick Marshall Seth Rogen and Jay Chou in “Green Hornet” Photo: Columbia Pictures The trailer for “The Green Hornet” arrived online Monday night, giving audiences their first peek at “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” director Michel Gondry’s live-action film based on the classic pulp hero. Written by and starring funnyman Seth Rogen, the film has had a long and rocky road to the big screen, having changed studios, cast and filmmakers multiple times since the mid-’90s. The current iteration casts Rogen as Britt Reid, the playboy son of a media tycoon who becomes masked crime fighter the Green Hornet after he inherits his father’s empire. He’s assisted by Kato (played by Jay Chou), a martial-arts expert and gadget genius who had been a close friend of his father. The pair set their sights on the head of the Los Angeles crime syndicate, Benjamin Chudnofsky (played by Oscar-winning actor Christoph Waltz ), and must keep their identities a secret from both the criminal element and amateur detective Lenore “Casey” Case ( Cameron Diaz ), who’s getting a little too close to the duo — and the truth. “The film’s cast also includes “Battlestar Galactica” actor Edward James Olmos and British actor Tom Wilkinson, as well as music (and a possible performance) by heavy-metal rockers Anvil . In the just-released trailer, we get our first look at Chou and Rogen in action, and a hint of what Gondry referred to as the “Kato vision” used by Chou’s character during fight scenes. We also get a good look at the Black Beauty, Green Hornet’s souped-up car , which debuted during last year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego. “The Green Hornet” hits theaters January 14, 2011, in standard, 3-D and IMAX screenings.
