Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic Robert Lee IV Quits Job As Pastor After VMAs Speech A Pastor who spoke out against white supremacy at the 2017 VMAs recently left his church. Robert Lee IV, the great-great-great-great-nephew of Army General Robert E. Lee denounced his ancestor during the VMAs as “an idol of white supremacy, racism, and hate.” He said as much while standing beside Susan Bro, the mother of Heather Heyer who was mowed down by a white supremacist in Charlottesville. “As a pastor, it is my moral duty to speak out against racism, America’s original sin,” said Lee. “Today, I call on all of us with privilege and power to answer God’s call to confront racism and white supremacy head-on. We can find inspiration in the Black Lives Matter movement, the women who marched in the Women’s March in January, and, especially, Heather Heyer, who died fighting for her beliefs.” Now he’s quit his job as the Pastor of Bethany United Church of Christ in Winston-Salem, N.C. amid controversy for his comments. An official statement from the pastor published on the Auburn Theological Seminary reads; “My presence at the church as a descendent of Robert E. Lee and an outspoken opponent of White Supremacy had already attracted attention, but with my appearance on MTV the media’s focus on my church reached an all time high. A faction of church members were concerned about my speech and that I lifted up Black Lives Matter movement, the Women’ s March, and Heather Heyer as examples of racial justice work. I want to stress that there were many in the congregation who supported my right to free speech, yet were uncomfortable with the attention the church was receiving. The church’s reaction was deeply hurtful to me. I want it to be clear that I feel a deep love for this congregation, and gratitude that they were willing to hire me as my first church out of seminary. I believe with all my heart that God did good work in my life there. That being said, when the church wanted to vote on my tenure, I tendered my resignation in which I told the congregation: Alberto E. Scott Olson/Getty Images Men Arrested For Group Assault On Queens, NY Woman A Queens woman was brutally assaulted while leaving a prayer meeting at her church earlier this week. According to Daily Mail , Four men surrounded the woman, forcing her to strip naked and perform oral sex on each of them while they held her at gunpoint. They also robbed her of her belongings before leaving her on the street. The moment at which the four men zeroed in on the unidentified woman as their target was caught by street cameras. The mother-of-two was seen walking along 150th Street in Queens, New York, her hands filled with bags as the four men lined up and followed her from across the street. Because of the footage, 19-year-old Julisses Ginel, 17-year-old Justin Williams, and 20-year-old Brandon Walker, were arrested over the attack on Thursday. If you watch Teen Mom: OG online , then by now you’re likely familiar with the ongoing drama surrounding Ryan Edwards’ substance abuse issues. Edwards checked into rehab last month, but not before creating some of the most appalling scenes in the franchise’s history as a result of his addictions. The most recent TM:OG season finale offered viewers a glimpse at Edwards and Mackenzie Standifer’s wedding – a grim, rushed affair that was attended only by Edwards’ parents. Even more surprising than the sullen nature of the occasion, of course, was the manner in which Edwards and Mackenzie arrived at the chapel. A visibly intoxicated Ryan drove himself and his fiancee to the church. He was so high that he frequently nodded off behind the wheel, and Standifer switched off the dash camera, so as to prevent viewers from seeing just how inebriated Edwards really was. On social media, there was a wild uproar from fans over the decision to let Edwards drive under the influence . (Both Standifer and MTV have taken considerable flak for the scene.) Now, eagle-eyed viewers have noticed that further cause for concern was captured on camera in the controversial episode. In several screen grabs from the finale it appears as though Edwards may have recently used intravenous drugs. During the controversial scene in the car, Standifer accuses Edwards of taking Xanax before his wedding ceremony, but now it looks as though even those whom he’s closest to did not realize the severity of Ryan’s drug problem. Dr. Pawan Grover, an addiction specialist who has not treated Edwards tells Radar Online that footage from the show seems to indicate that Ryan had been injecting some sort of substance , most likely of the opioid variety. “Based on Edwards’ history with addiction issues on the show, the images are consistent with track marks,” says Dr. Grover. “Which is a tell-tale sign of chronic intravenous drug use.” Fortunately, Edwards conpleted treatment for his addictions earlier this month. Unfortunately, he remained in in-patient care for a scant four weeks and announced his release with a brutal social media attack on his son’s mother, Maci Bookout. Many fans are taking that as an indication that Ryan has yet to address all of his demons. We’ll have further updates on this story as more information becomes available.
