Caresse Henry, Madonna’s Former Manager, Found Dead

She also managed Ricky Martin, Jessica Simpson, Joss Stone and Paula Abdul. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: Valery Hache /Getty Images Madonna’s former manager, Caresse Henry, has died at age 44, CNN reports. Henry worked with Madonna for about a decade, up until 2004, and has also managed a number of other artists, including Ricky Martin, Jessica Simpson, Joss Stone, Paula Abdul and Andrew Dice Clay. She is survived by her two children, Honour Kristen Norman and Ava Caresse Hinojosa, who both live in Los Angeles. Madonna’s publicist, Liz Rosenberg, released a statement to CBS News explaining that Henry “died suddenly” in Irvine, California, where she lived, on Wednesday. Funeral services will be held April 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Church in Westwood, California. “Despite rumors to the contrary, the cause of death has not been determined and is currently under investigation,” the CBS statement continued. In a statement to CNN, Rosenberg said, “The family has requested that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.” Henry also reportedly worked as a personal assistant to Madonna, and she’s credited as an artistic manager and executive producer on Madonna: Drowned World Tour 2001. According to various reports, Henry and Madonna parted ways in 2004 after rumors spread that Madonna fired Henry due to the pop star’s faith in Kabbalah; at the time, it was also reported that Henry quit. Musician Jimmy Demers, who was managed by Henry, wrote a piece for the Huffington Post remembering his pal. “I’m not sure what details led her to this dark moment of hopelessness, and I’m not sure there was anything anyone could have done to save her,” he wrote in response to reports that Henry had committed suicide, which has not been confirmed.

Appeals for calm after Nigeria sectarian slaughter

JOS, Nigeria — Nigerian troops were patrolling villages near the northern city of Jos Tuesday after the massacre of more than 500 Christians there that sparked international shock and outrage. But survivors of the latest wave of inter-ethnic violence, in which women and children were hacked to death or burned alive in their homes, denounced the authorities for having failed to intervene in time. Relatives of the dead meanwhile attended funerals Monday for the victims of the three-hour orgy of violence in three Christian villages close to the northern city of Jos. Related article: Survivors wail as children, women buried in Nigeria Witnesses have blamed the massacre on members of the mainly Muslim Fulani ethnic group, and according to media reports Muslims villagers were warned two days before attack via text messages to their phones. The security forces said they had detained 95 suspects in the violence. “We have over 500 killed in three villages and the survivors are busy burying their dead,” said state information commissioner Gregory Yenlong. “People were attacked with axes, daggers and cutlasses — many of them children, the aged and pregnant women.” Around 200 people were being treated in hospital, said the information ministry. Much of the violence was centred around the village of Dogo Nahawa, where gangs set fire to straw-thatched mud huts as they went on their rampage. The explosion of violence was just the latest between rival ethnic and religious groups. In January, 326 people died in clashes in and around Jos, according to police although rights activists put the overall toll at more than 550. “The attack is yet another jihad and provocation,” the Plateau State Christian Elders Consultative Forum (PSCEF) said. It had taken the army two hours to react from the time a distress call was put through and “the attackers had finished their job and left”, they added. Acting President Goodluck Jonathan has already sacked his chief security advisor. John Onaiyekan, the archbishop of the capital Abuja, told Vatican Radio that the violence was rooted not in religion but in social, economic and tribal differences. “It is a classic conflict between pastoralists and farmers, except that all the Fulani are Muslims and all the Berom are Christians,” he said. Fulani are mainly nomadic cattle rearers while Beroms are traditionally farmers. Locals said Sunday's attacks were the result of a feud which had been first ignited by a theft of cattle and then fuelled by deadly reprisals. Rights activists also said the slaughter appeared to be revenge for the January attacks, in which mainly Muslims were killed. The Vatican led a wave of outrage with spokesman Federico Lombardi expressing the Roman Catholic Church's “sadness” at the “horrible acts of violence”. UN chief Ban Ki-moon told reporters he was “deeply concerned”, but added: “I appeal to all concerned to exercise maximum restraint. “Nigeria's political and religious leaders should work together to address the underlying causes and to achieve a permanent solution to the crisis in Jos.” US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged “all parties to exercise restraint.” She added: “The Nigerian government should ensure that the perpetrators of acts of violence are brought to justice under the rule of law and that human rights are respected as order is restored.” Survivors said the attackers were able to separate the Fulanis from members of the rival Berom group by chanting 'nagge,' the Fulani word for cattle. Those who failed to respond in the same language were hacked to death. Witnesses said armed gangs had scared people out of their homes by firing into the air but most of the killings were the result of machete attacks. “We were caught unawares… and as we tried to escape, the Fulani who were already waiting slaughtered many of us,” said Dayop Gyang, of Dogo Nahawa. Gbong Gwon Jos, a Muslim resident of Dogo Nahawa, told The Nation daily he received advanced warnings of the attacks. “I got a text message about movement of the people.” Witnesses told Human Rights Watch that some of the attackers were former residents of the villages who had fled previous inter-community conflicts. “I recognized a few of [the attackers'] voices,” one witness told them. Another witness told the group many of the attackers had their heads wrapped in cloth to make it hard to identify them, and that some had cried “Allahu Akbar” (God is Great). Amid continuing tension Monday, Christian youths set upon a Muslim journalist covering one of the mass burials near Jos, an AFP reporter said. Police had to pull him to safety and he needed treatment for a broken nose. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5j7Ka7dhD48QseiCShJ-RhYxI6Exg added by: Toni801

Is Kirstie Alley’s New Weight Loss Program a Scientology Scam? [Scams]

Anti-Scientology campaign group Anonymous, and some blogs, are airing accusations that Scientologist Kirstie Alley ‘s new weight loss program, Organic Liaison , is based on quackery preached by L. Ron Hubbard, and that the company has links to the ‘church’. Alley, who is herself still not at her stated target weight of 140lbs, has been shilling for her new venture on Oprah, and it features heavily (pun intended) in her upcoming A&E reality series, Kirstie Alley’s Big Life (pun intended there too, we’re sure). Anonymous have found links between Organic Liaison LLC and Scientology — the firm’s accountant, Saul B Lipson, is a known Scientologist whose company is approved by the church and based near its headquarters in Clearwater, Florida. Along with utter quacks like Hollywood mystical doctor Soram Khalsa , the board features Michelle Seward, an active Scientologist. While this is not enough to support Anonymous’ claim that money from Organic Liaison will be channeled directly into the church, it does lend credence to the assertion that the program itself is, to some extent, based on a Scientology plan called the purification rundown . This was prescribed by L. Ron Hubbard himself, but criticized for being at best bullshit that claims to detox through vitamins, minerals, drinking vegetable oil and sitting in saunas, and at worst dangerous. As it is part of the Narconon program, that Alley has said helped her break a cocaine addiction, it is fairly safe to presume she has been through it. Organic Liaison offers to combine an organic food diet with “organic and natural diet supplements that replenish your body with essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients without the pangs of starvation or cravings you may have felt on other diet plans.” It’s certainly priced like a Scientology scam. Membership costs $10 per month, or $89 for a year, and the package of supplements, called Rescue Me, is a whopping $139 per month. One you’ve ordered the kit, it auto-ships and bills your card again every month until you stop it. The kit contains three supplements, Rescue Me (claimed detox and appetite suppresser), Release Me (claimed relaxant) and Nightingale (claimed sleep aid), featuring many cheaply-available vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs and aids like vitamin C, folic acid, L-Tryptophan, fiber, green tea, calcium and magnesium. The company also offers other supplements — notably Relieve Me, an anti-constipation supplement that Anonymous claim is related to Cal-Mag, a noxious-sounding dietary liquid developed by Hubbard that contains calcium, magnesium, vinegar and hot water. And that led some of those church members forced to drink it to, um, relieve themselves. The evidence, while suggestive, is by no means conclusive. What is safe to say is that thousands, millions even, of people will be over-paying for unproven herbal supplements combined with a common-sense diet. We’ll do some of our own digging into Organic Liaision, and its connection to Scientology, and see if it comes back Clear. [ Pic via A&E ]

Congressional Ban on Earmarks Sends Lobbyists Scrambling

Jolted by a sudden tightening of the rules, lobbyists and military contractors who have long relied on lucrative earmarks from Congress were scrambling to find new ways to keep the federal money flowing. House Republicans, seeking to outdo the Democrats in ethics reform, went even further Thursday by agreeing to swear off all earmarks, for both nonprofit and commercial organizations, for the next year. “This is the best day we’ve had in a while,” said Representative Jeff Flake, an Arizona Republican who has been a fierce opponent of earmarks — no-bid contracts directed by lawmakers — but had found little support among Republican colleagues before this week. “In terms of us getting this moratorium, the stars were aligned. What the Democrats did certainly motivated the Republicans.” http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/12/us/politics/12lobby.html?hp added by: jeffissleeping

Chief Exorcist says Devil is in Vatican

The Devil is lurking in the very heart of the Roman Catholic Church, the Vatican’s chief exorcist claimed on Wednesday. Father Gabriele Amorth said people who are possessed by Satan vomit shards of glass and pieces of iron. He added that the assault on Pope Benedict XVI on Christmas Eve by a mentally unstable woman and the sex abuse scandals which have engulfed the Church in the US, Ireland, Germany and other countries, were proof that the Anti-Christ was waging a war against the Holy See. “The Devil resides in the Vatican and you can see the consequences,” said Father Amorth, 85, who has been the Holy See’s chief exorcist for 25 years. “He can remain hidden, or speak in different languages, or even appear to be sympathetic. At times he makes fun of me. But I’m a man who is happy in his work.” While there was “resistance and mistrust” towards the concept of exorcism among some Catholics, Pope Benedict XVI has no such doubts, Father Amorth said. “His Holiness believes wholeheartedly in the practice of exorcism. He has encouraged and praised our work,” he added. Read the full article at http://www.brainwaving.com/2010/03/12/chief-exorcist-says-devil-is-in-vatican/ added by: cosmobirdie

Westboro Church Protests Head To Supreme Court

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court is getting involved in the legal fight over the anti-gay protesters who show up at military funerals with inflammatory messages like “Thank God for dead soldiers.” The court agreed Monday to consider whether the protesters' message, no matter how provocative and upsetting, is protected by the First Amendment. Members of a Kansas-based church have picketed military funerals to spread their belief that U.S. deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq are punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality. The justices will hear an appeal from the father of a Marine killed in Iraq to reinstate a $5 million verdict against the protesters, after they picketed outside his son's funeral in Maryland. A jury in Baltimore awarded Albert Snyder damages for emotional distress and invasion of privacy, but a federal appeals court threw out the verdict. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the signs contained “imaginative and hyperbolic rhetoric” protected by the First Amendment. The funeral for Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder in Westminster, Md., was among many that have been picketed by members of the fundamentalist Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas. Westboro pastor Fred Phelps and other members have used the funeral protests to spread their belief that U.S. deaths in the Iraq war are punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality. One of the signs at Snyder's funeral combined the U.S. Marine Corps motto with a slur against gay men. Other signs carred by members of the Topeka, Kan.-based church said, “America is Doomed,” “God Hates the USA/Thank God for 9/11,” “Priests Rape Boys” and “Thank God for IEDs,” a reference to the roadside bombs that have killed many U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The case will be argued in the fall. The case is Snyder v. Phelps, 09-751. added by: emarston

Marie Osmond Honors Son Michael At Funeral

Adopted son Michael Bryan, 18, committed suicide on February 26. By Gil Kaufman Marie Osmond (file) Photo: Steven Lawton/ FilmMagic The Osmond family gathered in Provo, Utah, on Monday for the funeral of 18-year-old Michael Bryan, Marie Osmond’s son who committed suicide on February 26. “He was a man of his word. He wasn’t a talker, he was a doer. He was reliable,” said Bryan’s sister, Rachel Blosil, 20, who struggled through tears to eulogize her younger brother, The Associated Press reported. “He knew my hopes, he knew my dreams, my secrets, things that nobody knows. He was my best friend.” Bryan was one of five children adopted by Osmond and ex-husband Brian Blosil, who divorced in 2007 after 20 years. Osmond announced in 2007 that Bryan had entered a rehab facility but did not reveal what he was being treated for. Marie Osmond had not planned to speak at the funeral, which was attended by more than 450 mourners at a chapel near the Provo temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, but as the service drew to a
