Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ Video: Queen Of Pain

Second clip from 21 perfectly captures song’s somber feel. By James Montgomery Adele in her video for “Someone Like You” Photo: XL Recordings Never mind the fact that, in person, Adele is so bubbly she’s practically effervescent . When it comes to her albums, Adele is pain personified. Alone and adrift, brokenhearted and bitter — these are emotions we all feel, but rarely do we have the courage to express them like Adele does. And nowhere on her 21 album is that more apparent than “Someone Like You,” the stirring, somber closer in which Adele goes to visit a former love (with high hopes of a reconciliation), only to discover he has not only moved on with his life, but is in a much better place. And though she’s heartbroken, she puts on a brave face, stubbornly proclaiming she’ll find someone just like him, even if she knows that she never will. And that conclusion makes you ache not only because it’s so daunting, but because it’s so real. We’ve all felt that way, tried to trick ourselves into thinking that any other outcome was possible. In Adele’s music, much like life, there are no happy endings. “Someone Like You” was a natural choice for the next single from 21, and on Thursday (September 29), Adele premiered the video for the song — an equally somber affair that matches not only the song’s emotional wallop, but its straightforward, downright crushing simplicity. Shot in Paris, in the very early hours of the morning, it is little more than Adele wandering the deserted streets of the city, gazing longingly at the Seine, very nearly breaking into tears. Director Jake Nava made the smart decision to shoot it in arty, smudgy black-and-white, which only adds to the clip’s desolate, haunted feel. In a lot of ways, as she drifts along, Adele is little more than a ghost, haunting the streets, destined to remain invisible to all, especially the one she wants to notice. It’s a lot like how everyone feels after heartbreak, and that’s what makes the “Someone Like You” video so powerful. There are no special effects, no camera tricks or elaborate choreography, because those are quick fixes. Life doesn’t operate that way, especially when the bottom falls out and we are all alone. Our days are endless, our hearts black, our skies are gray. And when it gets to that point, all we have is our pain, majestically, beautifully so. Thankfully, we also have Adele, and that sonorous, sorrowful voice of hers. Long live the Queen of Pain. What did you think of Adele’s new video? Share your reviews in the comments.

Corey Stoll on Midnight in Paris, Being Ernest Hemingway and the Audition of a Lifetime

If you haven’t yet seen Woody Allen’s fantastic Midnight in Paris , do yourself a favor and stop reading this now. (Then do yourself a bigger favor and go check it out.) Arguably the best way to enjoy the film is knowing little to nothing about its protagonist Gil (Owen Wilson) or his late-night exploits around the City of Light, which culminate in encounters with Gil’s literary and artistic heroes. Sort of . Corey Stoll knows what I’m talking about.

Chris Brown HOOKS UP Rolex-Returning Fan

Chris Brown made good on his promise to reward the fan who returned his $22,000 watch. An Ohio girl named Alisha got the VIP treatment last night! Team Breezy rolled through the fan’s hometown of Cincinnati, where he gave her two great seats to his concert at the city’s Riverbend Music Center. Chris also met with Alisha to thank her, then invited her to hang with him and his entourage before the show and signed a picture for good measure. Good thing he didn’t lose that gold wrist thingy. If you missed it, Chris accidentally tossed the diamond-encrusted Rolex into the crowd at the MTV VMAs last month during his ree-diculous performance. Incredibly, it landed in the lap of an honest person. Alisha ended up with the thing, then amazingly came forward and gave it back to Brown’s bouncer. Good to see her do the right thing, and that Chris treated her to a heckuva time as a result. Keep your eye out and you can see it go flying here: Chris Brown VMA Performance 2011

Snooki, JWoww Say ‘Jersey Shore’ Fight Is ‘A First’

‘But we’re still best friends,’ Snooki tells MTV News of argument on tonight’s episode. By Christina Garibaldi JWoww Season four of “Jersey Shore” has been jam-packed with a whole lot of drama, from the castmates’ weekly hookups to the almost-weekly fights. You’d think by now we’ve seen everything Italy has to offer, right? Well, think again. As if the infamous fighting match between the Situation and Ronnie wasn’t enough, on Thursday’s (September 22) episode, two of the most unexpected housemates are set to faceoff: Snooki and JWoww. When MTV News caught up with the besties, they opened up about what went down. “When you’re best friends and you’re drunk … sometimes you fight, you know, that’s what happens,” Snooki told us about the fight. Snooki and JWoww take their argument to the streets of Florence after Snooki’s boyfriend, Jionni, abruptly leaves a club claiming Snooki is “embarrassing” him by dancing provocatively. JWoww decides to put Snooki in her place, screaming, “You want a reality check? I just gave you one!” While viewers will likely be shocked to see the two BFFs squaring off, fans should rest assured there’s no lasting fallout from the argument. “Me and Jenni, we just never really screamed at each other like that,” Snooki said. “That was a first, but we’re still best friends.” And JWoww agreed, saying that she and Snooki, who are set to shoot their own reality show , wouldn’t let a little fight ruin their friendship. “Me and Nicole love each other. She is my little sister and I’ll protect her, but there are those moments that we just want to go at it,” JWoww explained. “And the best thing about our moments are they have nothing to do with ourselves. We aren’t actually fighting about each other, we are fighting because external things piss us off. So when we look back, we are laughing like, ‘Dude, why did we do that?’ ” Don’t miss “Jersey Shore” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV! Rihanna Drops ‘We Found Love’ Single

Calvin Harris-produced track is the first release from Rihanna’s forthcoming album, due in November. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Samir Hussein/WireImage Rihanna has been amping up her fans for the release of her new single, ” We Found Love .” In a flurry of tweets on Wednesday, she shared with fans the lyrics to the Calvin Harris-produced track, as well as the single’s cover art. It all led up to the single’s release on Thursday (September 22) morning on Facebook and the radio. As you would expect from a producer like Harris, “We Found Love” is a party-ready track. A synthy keyboard plays as Rihanna sings the opening lines of the song. It’s a pretty sparse dance track that simply plays up her robotic-like vocals, a pulsing beat and a synth sound. The layers of the song are found in her vocals and Harris’ production. On the song, Ri sings about finding that special someone. “Yellow diamonds in the light/ And we’re standing side by side/ As your shadow crosses mine/ What it takes to come alive/ It’s the way I’m feeling, I just can’t deny/ But I’ve gotta let it go,” she sings on the first chorus. The chorus simply features the line “We found love in a hopeless place” repeated four times. On the second verse, she sings, “Shine a light through an open door/ Love and life I will divide/ Turn away ’cause I need you more/ Feel the heartbeat in my mind/ It’s the way I’m feeling, I just can’t deny/ But I’ve gotta let it go.” For the art, Rihanna is punked out in a pompadour, loose-fitting jeans, chains, a denim jacket and chunky boots. She looks fiercely into the camera, arms crossed as she walks through the city. Both Rihanna and Harris are giving the single four thumbs up. “Excited for people to hear the new @rihanna song, i can tell u she sounds like an #angel !” Harris tweeted . After the song dropped, Rihanna had this message for her fans: “*pulls out glow stick*.” “We Found Love” serves as the lead single off Rihanna’s as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2010’s Loud album. The album is set to drop in November. What do you think of Rihanna’s new single? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Rihanna
