Troy Davis Supporters Make Last-Minute Appeal For Death-Row Inmate

Big Boi spreads the word about protests in Georgia before Davis’ scheduled execution on Wednesday. By Gil Kaufman Protesters for Troy Davis gather in Atlanta on Tuesday Photo: Jessica McGowan/ Getty Images With his execution looming on Wednesday night (September 21), Georgia death-row inmate Troy Davis ‘ lawyers have been scrambling to piece together a last-minute appeal on his behalf. Davis has been fighting to win a clemency ruling that would spare him the death penalty for the 1989 killing of Georgia police officer Mark MacPhail, a crime he claims he did not commit. Time magazine reported that his lawyers offered on Tuesday to have him take a polygraph test if the pardons board would consider its results, and some of Davis’ supporters have suggested asking President Obama to intervene in the case, though legal experts said that was unlikely. A Georgia appeals panel refused the polygraph request on Wednesday in what has become the most high-profile death penalty case in the country in several years. A number of prominent hip-hop artists have taken up Davis’ cause, among them Diddy, ?uestlove, Killer Mike and Russell Simmons, as well as the ATL’s Big Boi. The Outkast co-founder has taken to his Twitter account to spread the word about the case and try to get the word out about a series of protests planned for Wednesday around the city. “Time to hit the streets people!!!! #Troydavis. Rally at the prison in Jackson Georgia 4:00 pm , time to be seen!!!!!” he wrote early Wednesday as part of a flurry of tweets about the topic. “Judge Penny Freezeman is apparently the only one that can stop the UNJUST execution of Troy Davis: 912-652-7252.” Boi’s account is full of retweets from other celebs weighing in, including Kim Kardashian, Diddy, writer Kevin Powell, Cedric the Entertainer and Marlon Wayans. “At this point if you’re in Atlanta or anywhere near, Jackson, Georgia, is where u need to be, out of towners can man the phones,” he wrote . MacPhail was working as a security guard at a Savannah, Georgia, Burger King in August 1989 when he tried to help a man who was being assaulted in a nearby parking lot. Davis was fingered as the assailant and during his 1991 trial a number of witnesses testified that they saw Davis shoot MacPhail, though a murder weapon and DNA evidence were never recovered from the scene. Ballistics tests showed that the fatal shot came from the same gun used in another shooting in which Davis was earlier convicted. Davis’ lawyers have argued that new ballistics tests disprove the prosecution’s case and that seven of the nine original eyewitnesses changed all or part of their testimony in later proceedings. The long-running case has garnered worldwide attention and Davis’ cause has been taken up by groups and individuals such as Amnesty International, the NAACP, former President Jimmy Carter, the Pope, civil rights leader Al Sharpton and former FBI director William Sessions, who’ve called on courts to grant Davis a hearing in light of the new evidence. Lawyer Brian Kammer also tried to file a last-minute appeal based on new ballistics evidence and allegations of misleading testimony used in the original trial to convict Davis, but legal experts predicted those efforts would also likely fail to spare his client’s life. Davis is scheduled to die by lethal injection at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The case made it all the way to the Supreme Court last year, Davis’ lawyers failed to prove their client’s innocence. Davis has maintained his innocence all along, but prosecutors in the case have repeatedly said they feel confident that the right man was convicted. Things That Get My Morning Off to the WRONG Start

It’s morning. And no, don’t starting singing “As We Lay.” If you’re like me in the mornings, you’re not in very much of a mood to sing. Hell, you barely want to roll out of bed. But sometimes a good shower and a quick snack can get a slow starting day off on the right foot. But other days, you wake up late, you hit your knee on the corner of your bed and jump around in pain, and something tells you, this day is about to be WACK! Being the moody person I am, when I have good mornings, I want the world to know, and when I have bad mornings…that’s the norm. Here’s a few things that I think you’ll agree can have your day starting all wrong. ( Continue reading… )

Allah Take The Wheel: About 70 People Killed In Three Days By Pro-Government Forces In Yemen

Didn’t they have a meeting to deal with the realness of s*** in Yemen like 5 months ago??? Clearly someone missed the memo… In the past three days, pro-regime forces killed more than 70 people, mostly protesters, using anti-aircraft guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars. At least 23 people were killed in Sanaa on Tuesday as the fighting intensified and spread to sensitive areas of the capital before the cease-fire took hold after nightfall. In one incident, 13 followers of a tribal leader who changed sides and joined the opposition in March were killed when mortar shells fired by pro-government forces rained down on the upscale Hedah area of southern Sanaa, also home to top regime figures. “It’s a war zone,” said Sanaa activist Hakim al-Masmari. “We can’t even sit near windows because we could be killed.” Thousands have been forced to flee Sanaa for the relative safety of rural areas. Scores of pickup trucks and cars loaded with families and their belongings were seen early Tuesday heading out of the city, repeatedly shaken by loud explosions overnight. The United States condemned the violence and called on all parties to exercise restraint. “We urge a prompt, impartial investigation into the events that led to the recent violence,” Victoria Nuland, the State Department’s spokeswoman, said in a statement Tuesday. A negotiated cease-fire Tuesday halted three days of fighting that killed dozens of people, but it will not hold without a quick resolution of the key dispute: Who will lead the nation. A peaceful way out of Yemen’s seven-month crisis may not come easily, if at all, making it more likely to be settled in large-scale and ruinous street battles pitting renegade army soldiers and their allied tribal fighters against U.S.-trained forces loyal to embattled President Ali Abdullah Saleh and led by his son and one-time heir apparent, Ahmed. Already, pro-regime forces reinforced their positions in their strongholds in the south of the capital, apparently in anticipation of renewed fighting. The potential for bloody strife has been shown in Yemen since the uprising against Saleh’s regime began in February, with hundreds of protesters killed and thousands wounded at the hands of security forces. LMFAO Strip Down For ‘Sexy And I Know It’ Video

‘You gotta have moves, whether it be in the bedroom [or] on the dance floor,’ Redfoo tells MTV News about just-released clip. By Jocelyn Vena LMFAO Photo: MTV News LMFAO shuffled their way through the “Party Rock” video, and now they’re hoping to make “the wiggle” the next national dance craze. The guys just dropped their video for “Sexy and I Know It,” and it features lots of metallic Speedos, NSFW wiggling and a few celeb cameos. Redfoo and Sky Blu enlisted the help of their usual Party Rock crew, as well as Simon Rex, Wilmer Valderrama and Ron Jeremy, as they dance their way through Venice Beach and a local bar proving they are sexy and they know it. The video was shot back in late August, and MTV News caught up with LMFAO in Los Angeles as they cast extras for the video. We wanted to know: Just what is sexy? “Sexy is confidence. It’s ‘I don’t care what other people think, but I want them to think I’m sexy at the same time,’ ” Redfoo explained. “It’s a Catch-22. I want to be seen. Sexy is you want attention and you gotta have moves. You gotta have moves, whether it be in the bedroom [or] on the dance floor — just the way you walk, the way you talk.” His party pal, Sky Blu, had this piece of advice for those hoping to prove their sexiness after checking out the clip: “You’ve got to cultivate sexy. Sexy is something that you’ve consciously or unconsciously throughout your life been working on. If you’re in the mirror doing a little helicopter after the shower, that’s sexy and I know it.” Like their previous clips, the video features lots of gyrating dance moves. “It has to become natural to the way you already move, the way you walk,” Redfoo said of their dancing skillz. “It’s the same smooth thang.” What did you think of the “Sexy and I Know It” video? REVIEW: I Don’t Know How She Does It Has Plenty of Fear and Loathing to Go Around

The title phrase of I Don’t Know How She Does It is lobbed repeatedly at intrepid working mom heroine Kate Reddy (Sarah Jessica Parker, who also provides a Sex and the City -style pontifical voiceover) throughout this alleged comedy, sometimes in celebration, sometimes out of envy or condescension. Inherent in it is a swirl of self-doubt and competition. To be a mother, director Douglas McGrath’s film suggests, is to be in the constant grip of guilt and judgment, worried that you’re not giving enough, convinced that others are doing things better or more correctly than you, soothed when they appear to be doing worse.

Big Sean To Embark On His First Solo Tour

‘I’m gonna put on a hell of a show,’ rapper tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Big Sean Photo: Imeh Akpanudosen/ Getty Images Big Sean is ready to take his show on the road. Beginning October 2, the G.O.O.D. Music MC will begin his I Am Finally Famous Tour, a 30-city run that concludes November 25 in Los Angeles. “I’m embarking on my first solo tour this fall, and I passed up a lot of good opportunities, but I’m still gonna be a part of those opportunities one way or another,” Sean told MTV News. “I really thought it was important to do my own solo tour.” The Detroit rapper most recently was out on the road with Wiz Khalifa as part of his Rolling Papers tour, and in the past he talked about the possibility of joining Jay-Z and Kanye West on their Watch the Throne run. Sean didn’t confirm or deny that he’ll hit the road with Hov and ‘Ye, but judging from the already announced WTT dates, Sean’s involvement in it looks unlikely. For this run, Sean tells MTV News that he’ll be hitting smaller venues so he can build a closer relationship with his fans. “I think that’s really important for my first time out. Building my tour base I really wanted to have something intimate, something people will remember forever,” he said. “I’m gonna put on a hell of a show. I’ve been getting my cardio up, working out, taking this sh– serious.” Dates for Big Sean’s I Am Finally Famous Tour:
