Once Again, ‘Many Peaceful’ = ‘Some Violent’ When It Comes to Leftist Protesters in the NY Times

Violent protesters set fire to police cars and shattered store-front windows at the Group of 20 economic summit in Toronto this weekend. How did the New York Times, so skittish about the hypothetical threat of non-existent Tea Party violence from the right, react to actual violence committed by political protesters by the left-wing and anarchist groups? With more snort-worthy apologias for left-wing protesters being overwhelmingly “peaceful” in numerical terms Reporter Randal Archibold made a similar claim in his April 24 story from Phoenix at a protest against Arizona’s anti-immigration law, claiming that “hundreds of demonstrators massed, mostly peacefully, at the capitol plaza.” Local news in Phoenix reported three people were arrested during the immigration rally, including two seen throwing water bottles at police, and videos showed more lawlessness on display. The same defensive tone is present in Monday’s Business section story from Toronto, with the ludicrous headline ” Police in Toronto Criticized for Treatment of Protesters, Many Peaceful ,” by Ian Austen. Austen’s story is illustrated with a photo from the European Pressphoto Agency showing two policemen arresting a woman, but not photos shown elsewhere of burning cars, like the Associated Press photo by Frank Gunn above. Austen managed to fault the police both for initial passivity and subsequent overreaction: An escalation of aggressive police tactics toward even apparently peaceful protests at the Group of 20 summit meeting led to calls for a review of security activities . After allowing a small group of people to burn police cars and smash windows unimpeded on Saturday afternoon, many of the 20,000 police officers deployed in Toronto changed tactics that evening and during the last day of the gathering. There was a notable increase in both the numbers of police officers who surrounded demonstrations as well as more use of tear gas and rubber or plastic bullets. At the same time, there was a visible drop in the number of demonstrators in the city streets. As a result, the violence by some demonstrators that marred the opening of the Group of 20 meeting did not reappear on Sunday, and more than 600 people were arrested Saturday and Sunday. The Times seemed to miss the obvious connection: More police and more arrests = less crime. It’s one the Times has missed before, most notoriously in this headline from September 28, 1997: ” Crime Keeps On Falling; but Prisons Keep On Filling .” Unlike Archibold’s Arizona coverage, Austen didn’t ignore the violence on display in Toronto, though he did offer the same ludicrous apologia to this group of left-wing protesters that Archibold did to the ones in Arizona, writing that ” the overwhelming majority…were peaceful .” The violence was not exceptional compared with problems at previous international meetings, like the World Trade Organization’s gathering in Seattle in 1999 . Toronto’s shopping district sustained the greatest damage but quickly became something of a tourist attraction. But it was nevertheless extraordinary for Toronto, a city with little history of violent protests. David Miller, the city’s mayor, was among the many who swiftly condemned it. “Does today send signals about Toronto that I wish weren’t sent?” he said on Saturday evening. “Absolutely.” …. William Blair, the city’s police chief, did not respond directly to the widespread criticism over the lack of police response during the period of violence. But at a news conference, he suggested that officers were deliberately held back. The protesters, the overwhelming majority of whom were peaceful , promoted a variety of causes. Many were challenging the legitimacy of the Group of 20 and proposing that governments work through the United Nations. Others championed specific issues, particularly in relation to human rights and the environment.

Police attempt (and fail) to clear crowds amid G20 unrest

Go Toronto! http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/TopStories/20100626/summit-protests-100626/ Heavily armed riot police are attempting to clear crowds out of downtown Toronto, several hours after black-clad vandals raged through the city in protest of the G20 summit. In the heart of the city, four police cars have been torched and officers have used tear gas. There are reports that police fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowds, which Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair could not confirm. Before midnight, about 200 protesters gathered at the Novotel hotel close to the lakeshore. Many sat on the ground, holding signs, as riot police moved in and made arrests. As midnight approached, at least 150 arrests had been made and officials said that number could rise overnight. “I want to assure you that the persons responsible will be held accountable,” Blair told reporters. “We are working hard to maintain order and restore the rule of law.” Only a few blocks from the mayhem, G20 leaders are meeting at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The violence escalated after a splinter group broke away from a large and peaceful group of protesters who began marching around 1 p.m. local time. Though the number of protesters appeared to dwindle into the evening, flashpoints continued to occur around the city. At the Ontario legislature, mounted police and riot officers attempted to disperse a crowd of demonstrators and onlookers. At one point, a CTV producer working on the scene was taken into police custody. CTV reporter Scott Laurie questioned police officers about the arrest but was not given an immediate answer. Laurie said the employee was wearing his media accreditation. Moments later, the crowd then re-grouped and marched southward down Yonge Street. Toronto Mayor David Miller said at a news conference that the so-called anarchists are simply criminals who are determined to cause as much destruction as possible. “It was a deliberate act by people who make it their business to commit these acts,” he said. “Am I angry? Absolutely.” Miller spoke to reporters at about 6 p.m. local time, nearly five hours after the protest erupted into violence. Video footage captured earlier in the day showed that many of the violent protesters were changing out of their black clothes and blending into the larger crowds. The Prime Minister's Office released a statement on Saturday evening, saying: “Free speech is a principle of our democracy. But the thugs that prompted violence earlier today represent in no way shape or form the Canadian way of life.” Earlier, the black-clad protesters smashed up a police cruiser and smashed its windshield along Queen Street, as other demonstrators hurled bottles and sticks at a solid line of riot police. As police donned gas masks and mounted units rode into the city's core on horses, the violent protesters lit garbage on fire and tipped over recycling containers. They also smashed vehicles in and grabbed stones from nearby homes. News media vehicles were also targeted and vandalized. A concert at the Air Canada Centre has been cancelled, hospitals in the downtown core have been locked down and the Eaton Centre was also closed. Earlier on Queen Street, next to the MuchMusic building, the violent protesters attempted to break southward through a tight line of riot police. Three protesters involved in the confrontation suffered injuries. According to reports from the scene, some were bleeding from the head. Moments later, another standoff occurred a few blocks west, where protesters reportedly tossed sticks at police and chanted “let us go.” Earlier, thousands of demonstrators gathered at the Ontario legislature Saturday morning to hear speeches. While protest organizers promised a family-friendly demonstration, a splinter group calling itself the “Get off the Fence contingent” announced plans to challenge the heavy security cordon around the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, where the G20 summit began Saturday afternoon. Around 1 p.m., two protesters were arrested near the downtown core and allegedly found with an “incendiary device.” Unconfirmed reports from the scene said the pair was carrying Molotov cocktails. Man arrested for taking picture of cop in his own home

A Texas man has sued his local police department, saying he was arrested for taking a picture of a police officer when the officer entered his home without permission. According to the lawsuit (PDF), Sgt. Justin Alderete of the Sealy, Texas, police department arrived at the home of Francisco Olvera in October, 2009, apparently responding to a noise complaint. Olvera had been playing music on his computer speakers while working outside on his patio. The sergeant asked Olvera for identification. When Olvera went inside his home to grab his ID, Sgt. Alderete followed him inside. Believing the officer didn't have a right to enter his home without permission, Olvera picked up his cellphone and took a photo of the officer. At that point, the lawsuit states, Alderete accused Olvera of “illegal photography” and arrested him. Olvera was charged with “loud music” and “public intoxication” — the officer had seen a beer can on the kitchen table, the lawsuit asserts. In January, Olvera was acquitted of all charges. e lawsuit names Alderete, Sealy Police Chief John Tollett, and the city of Sealy. It alleges that Olvera was the victim of “unlawful search and seizure,” “unlawful arrest” and “malicious prosecution.” The lawsuit further alleges that Alderete made a racist remark against Olvera during booking. “Do you know what I tell Mexicans when they get loud?” the lawsuit alleges Alderete asked. “No chinges con migo pinche culero.” (“Don't be f**king with me,” another officer translated,) Olvera's lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for his legal costs in the criminal trial; for “emotional distress” and punitive damages “as allowed by law.” added by: im1mjrpain

Israeli Airforce land at Saudi base ahead of possible Iran strike

Islam Times says Israeli jets unloaded military equipment in Islamic country ahead of possible Iran strike. Israeli Air force aircraft landed during the past weekend at a military base in Saudi Arabia and unloaded large quantities of military gear, according to a report published Wednesday by Islamic website Islam Times. The report, which has questionable credibility, claimed the equipment was unloaded at a base in the city of Tabuk, in the north western part of the country, ahead of a possible strike on Iran. London Times reports Saudis carry out defense missile tests aimed at allowing Israeli warplanes to pass through airspace on way to bomb nuclear facilities in Iran. 'We will let them through and see nothing,' says source The controversial report was also published by the Iranian news agency Fars, under the title “Suspicious military activity of the Zionist regime in Saudi Arabia.” According to the report, the IDF built a military base approximately 9 km (5.5 miles) from Tabuk, and while Israeli planes landed there on June 18 and 19, all civilian flights were cancelled at the local airport. One of the passengers in Tabuk noted that civilians at the airport were not given an explanation for the flight cancellations, but were compensated by the Saudi authorities and accommodated in nearby hotels. The report further claimed that “the secret relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia became the main topic of conversation among the city's residents.” Another report published two weeks ago claimed Saudi Arabia tested its defense missile systems In order to allow IAF airplanes to pass through its airspace en route to bombarding nuclear facilities in Iran. Security elements in the Persian Gulf told the London-based Times magazine that Riyadh gave Israel the green light to fly through a narrow airspace in the north of the country, in order to shorten the flight time to the Islamic Republic. According to the Times, in order to ensure that IAF aircraft are not intercepted by Saudi defense missiles, Riyadh conducted tests to make sure the system does not activate if Israeli planes are detected. After the aircraft clear the area, the system will resume to normal activity. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kwz4BqmMfpo/TCIma2cznQI/AAAAAAAABjo/sN5MFhHYPPQ/s1600/… added by: crystalman

Polluting Two-Stroke "Mototaxi" Goes Solar

Photo of solar-powered mototaxi by Universidad Nactional in Lima. What’s worse about the two-stroke engines still common workhorses in motors of all kinds – the pollution or the noise? In Lima, Peru, plagued by air pollution, it’s probably the former. An ingenious professor at the University of San Marcos has designed a solar panel retrofit of the two-stroke “mototaxis” that fill the streets of the city which can run on pedal-power or a battery hooked to the solar panels…. Nipsey Hussle Reps L.A. New Class As ‘Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010’ Candidate

Fans decide our ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010’ — vote now! The winner will be revealed on July 25. By Shaheem Reid Nipsey Hussle Photo: Cinematic “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” Candidate: Nipsey Hussle Yeah, he’s living up to his name. Nipsey Hussle is hustling, building his brand across the board. He has a deal for his own shoe with Pony, just finished a film with Vivica A. Fox and another one with Ving Rhames, he opened a clothing store in his native Los Angeles, appears on the new “Def Jam Rapstar” video game, has a tour coming and still has more mixtapes and a debut album on deck for October. “My album, it ain’t got no wrinkles in it,” Nip said recently in New York about his debut, South Central State of Mind. “From the sonic quality of it, every verse, every hook, to the features, to the production. Ain’t no excuses for the album.” Nipsey’s candidacy for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” comes from his grind in the streets. Last year, he dropped a trilogy of mixtapes called Bullets Ain’t Got No Names, which introduced him and immediately captivated fans. His work in the ‘hood garnered him co-signs by the likes of Snoop Dogg and the Game, both of whom he toured with. Drake also appeared on the potent Hussle underground smash “Killer.” The momentum has made Nip one of the leaders of the new wave of West Coast MCs, also including Fashawn and Jay Rock. “Nipsey, he brings the real to the table,” said Rock, who will be teaming up with Nip for a duet mixtape called Red and Blue Make Green. “He brings that struggle. He’s telling you his story. Nipsey is bringing a story as a whole package, as well as he’s bringing real music. Reality rap.” “You gonna be hard-pressed to come to L.A. and not hear a car playing Jay Rock music, playing Nipsey Hussle right now,” Nip said. “It’s gonna be almost impossible. They say it starts in your backyard. I feel we putting forth that legwork. We really took our city without the traditional outlet, the Dr. Dre, the Snoop Dogg, the Death Row. That’s not to take anything from them, but we wasn’t really waiting. We kinda like stood on our own foundation of hard work. That’s the brand that the new breed of West Coast artists gonna bring to the table. Self-made. Off the top!” Besides the authenticity of his music, Nip’s appeal lies in his laid-back delivery. You look at him or hear his music and you see your homie from around the way. Nip knows that all the love in the streets is eventually going to have to translate in his official releases. He just dropped the single “Feelin’ Myself (I’m So Fresh)” with Lloyd and has South Central State of Mind in cook-up mode right now. J.R. Rotem, Scott Storch, Houston’s Mr. Lee, Grammy winners Play-N-Skillz, Terrence Martin and Nip’s live band, 1500 or Nothin’, produced on the album thus far. Trey Songz and Sean Kingston are among the guest performers. “Regardless of people’s opinion about it, the dominant culture in L.A. is gang-banging,” Nipsey, a Crip, said about “Blue Laces,” a song from his LP. “Us being young dudes in our 20s, we not the cause of that. We was born into this culture. We reacted to it from the perspective of survival. I feel like that record, ‘Blue Laces,’ speaks on the realness of that culture. We not the cause of this. This is what led us into that mentality.” Nip said South Central State of Mind speaks to young Angelinos. “I’m kinda revolving around that concept on a lot of records on that album,” he said. “On the state of mind in growing up in L.A. Whether you from Compton, Watts, Long Beach, the east side, west side, it’s a state of mind that’s way more powerful than an individual. I might feel a certain way personally, but this is what it is. “I might feel like one of my dudes is a Blood, one of my dudes is from Hoover. So me, personally, this is my homeboy and I got love for him,” he added. “But I’m from the 60s, and it’s a politic that goes with that. I just feel like I revolved around that concept, the cause of this mind state. I want to impact the culture with the project and raise the consciousness of the people that’s being affected by this. And bring a human element to what this is about and stop people from looking at us like we just mindless killers and we glorifying this type of life. We really striving for change from within. We ain’t gonna go Hollywood with it and get a record deal and start blasting where we come from, but at the same time, we do wanna see change. It’s a lot of general concepts that revolve around that theme.” Nipsey and 19 other up-and-coming MCs are in the running to become MTV News’ “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” — and the winner will be decided by you! Cast your vote for the “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” right here . The top five will be revealed beginning July 19, and the winner will be announced on the “Sucker Free Summit” July 25!
