Yusuf Hawkins Documentary ‘Storm Over Brooklyn’ Coming To HBO

Source: New York Daily News Archive / Getty Yusuf Hawkins  was slain by a violent white mob nearly 30 years ago, and a new documentary will examine the incidents leading up to this tragic moment in New York history. HBO has ordered Storm Over Brooklyn and will be coming to the cable network at a later date. Shadow and Act writes : The project is a result of the inaugural Feature Documentary Initiative created in 2017 between U.K./U.S. producer Lightbox and the American Black Film Festival to foster diversity in the feature documentary arena. Directed by Muta’Ali, the film will center on the crime which shocked New York and the result of the nation, and its trickle-down impacts. Sixteen-year-old Hawkins had come to Bensonhurst with three friends to look at a used car, when they were attacked by the hostile mob, whose members mistakenly believed that Hawkins was dating a neighborhood girl who was white. The incident shocked New York and the world and unleashed a torrent of racial tension in an already divided city and led to televised protests and marches. The growing unrest contributed to the ousting of New York City Mayor Ed Koch in favor of David Dinkins, who became the city’s first — and as of now, only — African American mayor. “Yusuf Hawkins’ murder had a major effect on the public, and the locked away regret and sorrow questions a history that those involved have held onto for nearly 30 years. We will finally see the light of day in the context of our time. This is due to the courage of Yusuf’s loving family, as well as the visionary talent teams at HBO, Lightbox and ABFF,” said Muta’Ali. Joseph Fama, the man who fired the gunshots that killed Hawkins, was convicted of second-degree murder in May 1990. An accomplice, Keith Mondello, was acquitted of murder charges that year but charged with 12 other counts, which led to protests in the region led by Rev. Al Sharpton and other leaders. — Photo: Getty

The Real Housewives of New York Season 10 Episode 11 Recap: Faux Weddings and a Funeral

Jill Zarin returned on The Real Housewives of New York City Season 10 Episode 11 , and we wish it were under better circumstances.  The former cast member reunited with the ladies as she geared up for her late husband, Bobby Zarin’s funeral.  “I got a text from mutual friends and Jill herself that Bobby passed away. It’s really sad. I knew how close they were,” said Ramona Singer while chatting with Dorinda Medley.  Watch The Real Housewives of New York City Season 10 Episode 11 Online Ramona went on to confirm that she met up with Bobby and Jill while he was ill, and they put the past behind them. That’s a pretty big move when you consider the history between the three of them.  “Bethenny hasn’t seen her for six years,” continued Ramona, which essentially confirmed we were going to be in for one of the most awkward reunions in the history of reunions.  If you watch The Real Housewives of New York City online , you know that Bethenny and Jill were once best friends, but a falling out paved the way for them to part ways and never speak again.  “Despite what happened with Jill, Bobby loved me,” said Bethenny of the whole situation, and made her way back from Aspen in luxury via a private jet for the event.  Bethenny maintained that she was going to pay her respects and make a swift exit, but it all hit home for her when she was there.  “I don’t know why I’m not leaving. I want to see her again. I’m feeling bad for a woman who lost her husband. It’s a real loss,” Bethenny said to the audience.  Their reunion was as heartbreaking as one would expect. Jill admitted that she was in a difficult spot because she had not been alone since her 20s.  “So proud. Bobby loved you,” Jill declared.  “Where are the gift bags? Terrible funeral,” Bethenny said, clearly attempting to make light of a dire situation.  After the funeral, Luann appeared in the episode thanks to the power of the telephone. Bethenny hit her up, and they got talking.  Luann was mad that she missed the funeral, but she realized she needed to get herself better or she was going to end up in some serious trouble.  “It was a wake-up call for me. This is the bottom,” Luann shared with her friend. But Luann was looking at the positive side of things and admitted that it was for the best she was arrested because it gave her the nudge in the right direction she needed.  Tinsley’s mother, Dale, was in the city and met up with her daughter. It quickly emerged that Dale was meddling in her daughter’s life by telling Scott Tinsley’s biological clock was running out.  “Oh my god. Literally,” Tinsley said, before telling her mother to stay out of her life if her aim was to mess things up.  Despite all of the drama, Tinsley went to look for wedding dresses with her mother. Is there actually hope for them to get married? There may be a way for them to have kids. Tinsley made a video call to Dr. Denker aka her fertility specialist, and he showed them a picture of her eggs.  “I’m looking at what potentially could be my children,” said Tinsley. We finally got more intel from Luann as the episode drew to a close.  “This past month for me has been eye-opening,” Luann said to the audience.  “I feel really, really good,” said Luann on a phone call to Dorinda. “I’ve been self-medicating for a while. I binge in order to cover my emotions.”  “I want to see what it’s like to be sober, see if I can actually enjoy myself without it,” Luann said as the episode closed.  What did you think of the episode? Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for TIDAL Cardi B. continues to prove she has not forgotten her roots. She recently stood up for her former place of work that is in danger of being shut down permanently. The Bronx bombshell recently took to social media to advocate justice for Love & Lust, a gentleman’s club she used to dance at that has been closed by the city. “Justice for LUST!!! Come on now that’s f - - ked up, never a shoot out, nobody ever got murked. Its like you can’t win for s - - t!!! OPEN THEM LOCKS.” Source: INSTAGRAM @IAMCARDIB / INSTAGRAM @IAMCARDIB Since opening in 2014, owner Imran Jairam claims his venue has been unfairly targeted by local police with summons, raids, fines and more. More recently he alleges the NYPD also came in looking for a bribe. In 2017 Jairam says  Deputy Inspector Emmanuel Gonzalez visited his nightspot looking for free services including round-trip airfare to Puerto Rico and generators for the island post Hurricane Maria. Love & Lust have since filed a $125 million dollar suit against the State of New York. The NYPD Captains Endowment Association president has commented on the allegations directly but only saying the nightspot is “looking to shift focus from their bad conduct.” You can view Imran’s interview with The Breakfast Club detailing the history of issues below. Where Is Tekashi 69? Unknown Shooter Blasts Bullets At Chief Keef Outside NYC Hotel

Cheif Keef Shot At In NYC Cheif Keef literally dodged a bullet during his latest visit to NYC this weekend. According to TMZ , shots were fired Keef’s way around 6am outside the W Times Square. Shell casings were discovered, and cops are on the hunt for two black males spotted fleeing the scene, wearing all black hoodies. Thankfully, none of the shots fired connected, and Keef walked away unharmed. Mind you…this incident comes hot on the heels of Tekashi 69 publicly giving Chief Keef and fellow rapper Lil Reese 48 hours to murder him. Yes, you read that correctly. The rainbow-haired instigator went on a full rant against the drill duo, even causing his female companion to grab her pooch and get off the scene to avoid subsequent heat. Now we’re not pointing ANY fingers here, but all this smack talk doesn’t exactly foster an environment of peace in the NYC streets. Besides, 69 is reportedly in LA after giving that ultimatum to someone visiting his city… Anyway, thankfully Keef is okay! Hopefully, he’ll stay safe for the remainder of his time in NYC. Community Calls For Boycot After Virginia Newspaper Runs A KKK Recruitment Ad On Their Front Page

(DAVID MAXWELL/AFP/Getty Images) Newspaper Gets Backlash After Running Front-Page Ad For KKK What in the Yakubian world is going on in Virginia ? The Westmoreland News is facing major backlash after they recently ran a recruitment ad for the Ku Klux Klan on its front page. This completely blatant advertisement is complete with disgusting statements like “Wake up White America! Stop allowing these third world savages to walk all over YOUR people!” and the telephone number to a national KKK hotline. Westmoreland News in Virginia ( @TheWN ) featured this #racist ad on their front page today. In 2018. In America. This is unacceptable and should enrage every decent human. #racists #racism #WhiteSupremacy #FightRacism pic.twitter.com/vBTZ7BzThw — Jennifer Knecht (@_jenniferknecht) April 26, 2018 Black residents only make up about 15% of the town’s population–go figure–and are obviously appalled at the publication’s decision to run such an ad. Colonial Beach resident Betty Tate Thompson said about the incident on   WTVR , “They posted the whole flyer as if they were giving them free advertising. It even had the number on flyer to contact the head of the KKK. Which I thought was totally ridiculous.” Police Chief Danny Plott, who alerted the paper about the ads, told the station that after speaking to the editor of the paper,   Brittlynn Powell, she “explained that she wanted to put it in to show people that those of us in Colonial Beach who may think there’s not racism … I think she didn’t expect for this to blow up the way it did.” Sure, seems legit…. Newsweek  has reported that there are multiple calls for boycotts on the paper’s  Facebook page , saying that the story was essentially free advertising for the hate group.
