This is going too far Man Made To Have Cavity Search At Traffic Stop Maybe the cops were mad about their low-paying jobs and decided to take it out on an innocent man with this nonsense. According to Raw Story: At least one other man in New Mexico was forced to undergo invasive bodily searches for drugs after a traffic stop involving the same police dog and the same hospital. KOB-TV reported that David Eckert had filed a lawsuit against the city of Deming, Gila Regional Medical Center, six law enforcement officers and two doctors after he claimed to have been subjected to anal probes, X-rays and a colonoscopy after officers suspected him of having drugs after he was pulled over. However, no drugs were found after 14 hours and eight medical procedures that attorneys say violated the terms of a search warrant. Another man, Timothy Young, told the TV station that he experienced a similar ordeal after he was stopped for turning without a proper signal. Young said the same K-9 unit that alerted officers to drugs in Eckert’s case indicated that he also had illegal drugs. Like Eckert, Young was taken to Gila Regional Medical Center in nearby Silver City and subjected without his consent to X-rays of his abdominal area and an anal exam. Police found no drugs, and Young said the search warrant used in his case, like Eckert’s, was not valid in the county were the exams were conducted. The station also reported that Leo, the K-9 unit involved in both cases, had been trained as a drug-sniffing dog, but the animal’s certification had expired for New Mexico in April 2011. K-9 officers must be certified each year. “We have done public requests to find anything that would show this dog has been trained, (and) we have evidence that this dog has had false alerts in the past,” said Eckert’s attorney, Shannon Kennedy. The doctors involved in both cases are under investigation by the state licensing board, and the police officers will go before a law enforcement board. SMH. Shutterstock

20-Pound Carp Loses Bid For Ann Arbor City Council

A 20-pound carp lost his bid for a seat on the Ann Arbor, Mich., city council, according to a report. He had been campaigning in the city, home to the University of Michigan. Despite some quality signage and news coverage, it was not to be. Carp Campaigns For City Council MLive reports that the carp was focusing the bulk of his campaign efforts on the 4th Ward, where Democrat Jack Eaton was the only candidate on the ballot. Eaton, for his part, said that something smelled fishy here. His residency status was an issue, as was his character, as the carp was relocated from a city park pond to a nearby river for being destructive to vegetation. The carp also hadn’t filled in any paperwork, according to his challenger. In any case, the undeterred carp’s supporters set up campaign signs around town. To no avail, it turned out on this pivotal Election Day 2013. Eaton prevailed with 88 percent of the vote to win a seat on the city council, although 191 write-in ballots were cast, good for 11 percent of the turnout. Maybe the carp enjoyed good grass/algae-roots support?

Random Ridiculousness: Librarian Terminated For Reporting Two Employees Having Sex In The Children’s Section

In the children’s section though? Woman Fired For Reporting Sex In Library It’s sad to see folks fired for doing their job. Hope the poor thing had a savings plan. According to KOB 4: A now-former assistant librarian claims the mayor fired her after she witnessed two town employees having sex in the children’s section of the Estancia Public Library. “Right in the middle of the library, in front of God and everybody,” attorney Joseph CampBell said. He’s representing Jaime Kurz who was terminated last week. CampBell said Kurz arrived at the library just before it opened on August 20th. He said she heard noises, set down her bags, and quickly discovered the employees having sexual intercourse. Later that day, he said Kurz contacted Julie Carter, who was the town clerk at the time, to report what she witnessed. CampBell said Carter then contacted Mayor Sylvia Chavez. In early October, CampBell said Kurz wrote a letter to the mayor requesting time off to avoid a “hostile work situation.” The mayor signed the letter, he said. A few days later, CampBell said Kurz and Carter both learned that they would lose their jobs. The town terminated Carter’s employment two weeks ago. “They’re two outsiders, non-locals,” he said. “You know, they stumbled upon and kicked up a hornets nest.” This is what she gets for her hard work. KOB Eyewitness News 4 attempted to contact Mayor Chavez in-person on Friday, but learned that she was out of town. In a phone conversation with Catherine Robinson, the city’s attorney, Robinson said Kurz and Carter were not terminated for reporting the alleged sex act, but said she could not elaborate since it was a personnel matter. Robinson confirmed that the sex allegations were addressed and dealt with after they were reported. A KOB Eyewitness News 4 crew found one of the accused employees at work on Friday. In a letter from Mayor Chavez to Kurz dated October 10th, Mayor Chavez told Kurz that she was being terminated for failing to turn over keys to the library when asked and for failing to meet with the mayor to discuss the hostile work claims. CampBell said the city’s arguments don’t hold water. “Yeah, it’s like a sieve,” he said. Although Kurz and Carter were at-will employees, meaning they could be terminated for no reason at any time, CampBell said they fall in a protected class under the Whistleblower Protection Act since they reported misconduct or inappropriate behavior. CampBell said he plans to file a lawsuit against the city in the next several months on Kurz’s behalf. Gary Mitchell, the attorney for Julie Carter, also said he’d do the same. San Francisco Evacuated Due to "Suspicious Device" Sigthing

A bomb threat shut down San Francisco’s Union Square yesterday for approximately two hours. The incident took place around 11:45 a.m. when an unattended backpack was discovered along Stockton Street. In response, authorities ordered a multi-block area in the city to be closed, as workers in the vicinity were asked to remain inside their businesses and tourists were ordered to avoid the area. Cable car service was also stopped during the investigation. Fortunately, bomb-sniffing dogs and their human colleagues did not find anything dangerous inside the suspicious device, which was sitting near a text that had been set for this weekend’s women’s marathon. “It’s better to be safe than sorry,” Police spokesman Albie Esparza told The San Francisco Chronicle of why a shutdown was ordered. “We take these incidents really seriously.” Union Square is a major tourist draw in San Francisco. It is visited by millions every year and is comprised of many high-end retail stores.

SMH Detroit Mother Says Pastor Winans Refused To Dedicate Her Son Born Out Of Wedlock Famed pastor Marvin Winans is facing backlash in his community after one woman says he refused to dedicate her son at their church because he was born out of wedlock. via MyFox Detroit -Charity Grace lives on the east side of the city with her 2-year-old son, Joshua. The two recently started to attend Perfecting Church under the leadership of Pastor Marvin Winans. On Sunday, a special blessing is planned at the church on East Nevada Street. They are having a dedication service for children two years old and under. Grace was looking forward to having her only child receive this blessing. “I want to instill values and morals in my son based upon the word of God,” said Grace. She called the church on Tuesday to make arrangements. “I told them I was not married and that’s where everything just broke loose.” Grace says she spoke with a woman who told her Pastor Winans’ policy is that he is not to bless children of unwed mothers in front of his congregation. “I’ve never felt so degraded and disrespected in my life,” said Grace. Word quickly started to spread among the Hamptons set. Another source tells us the roommate of the young social approached her at a different bash at Leder’s Hamptons home in mid-July, and said her friend was sleeping with Ramona’s husband and had photos of him in the buff to prove it. “The girl said, ‘You’re not going to believe this, but I have to show you some pictures. Mario’s having an affair with my roommate,” our source told us. Then, “She showed me a photo on her phone of Mario’s ding-dong. Race Matters: NYC Bakery Hit With $25,000 Fine For Not Hiring A Woman Because She Is Black

Oh the joys of being black . Woman Told She Can Not Be Hired Because She Is Black Racism will never die. According to The NY Daily News At the Framboise Patisserie in Middle Village, Queens, the pastries are elegant, the cakes are custom-made — and city officials say the hiring is discriminatory. “I can’t hire you because you’re black,” Jamilah DaCosta, 25, said she heard when she applied for a job working the counter at the cozy French bake shop. The Rego Park woman interviewed with co-owner Patty Meimetea in October 2011 but was told she wouldn’t be a good fit for the “counter girl” position because black workers in the front of the store would scare away customers, according to findings by the city Human Rights Commission. After an investigation and a trial, the commission last week fined the bakery $25,000 for racial and gender discrimination for weeding out DaCosta because of her race and discouraging men from applying for the job with a gender-specific “counter girl” ad on Craigslist. “I felt hurt. I was disgusted,” DaCosta said of her experience at Framboise Patisserie. “Before I could even pull out my resume or start a formal interview, she was telling me all this negative stuff — she couldn’t hire me because I was black, I would scare away her customers.” According to DaCosta and the commission, when DaCosta came in for the interview, Meimetea quickly started quizzing her about her nationality. DaCosta said she was American, but after the owner pressed her, she said she was Jamaican and Lebanese, according to the decision. She told DaCosta her husband would be angry if she hired a black worker for the counter — and said she would hire her if there were a job open in the kitchen, where no one would see her. She also suggested applying for a job at another Queens bakery where bosses wouldn’t care what the workers look like — and told DaCosta to look at the pictures hanging around the bakery, pointing out they were all of white people. A shaken DaCosta cried in her car after the disastrous interview. Damn “They’re not judging me on my personality, but my skin color. What century are we living in?” she said. “I thought I had thick skin, I thought I could withstand anything, but it just completely broke me down.” The owners denied making racist remarks — and insist DaCosta is lying. “Of course this is not true,” Meimetea said in a brief interview. Meimetea’s husband and co-owner AJ Saputhanthri said that DaCosta was not hired because the shop had already filled the position and added that DaCosta didn’t have the necessary experience. “I can’t hire somebody who worked at McDonald’s,” he said. “She don’t even know what is the cookie dough.” Saputhanthri added that he found any charges of racism absurd, because he himself is from Sri Lanka. “I want the human rights judge to look at me and tell me I look like a white,” he said. Saputhanthri even accused DaCosta herself of racism, saying she assumed his wife, Meimetea, was racist because she looked white. Meimetea is Greek. “It’s never true. I swear to you,” he said. “I respect everybody. I don’t do anything bad to people.” “They want only money,” he said of city officials. “I’m a simple man living simple, working hard … They want to take my money away.” The commission found the pair’s denials weren’t credible, noting they admitted they had never hired a black person or a man to work the counter in the three years they had been in business, though Saputhanthri said the bakery now has two black employees, including one at the counter. “Respondents’ actions were blatant violations,” the commission wrote in its decision. “Meimetea’s statements to Ms. DaCosta were cruelly and flagrantly bigoted and demeaning.” The $25,000 penalty the commission ordered the bakery to pay includes $10,000 in damages to DaCosta, a $10,000 fine for racial discrimination for the shop’s treatment of DaCosta, and a $5,000 fine for gender discrimination for the “counter girl” ad. Being racist is costly. Now they have to give up some of those coins. SMH
