‘Avengers’ Becomes Third-Highest-Grossing Movie Ever

Superhero flick trails behind two James Cameron blockbusters in the first and second all-time-gross spots. By Terri Schwartz Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson in the “Avengers” Photo: Marvel Watch out James Cameron because “The Avengers” is coming for you next. Marvel’s all-star team of superheroes has officially become the number-three highest-grossing movie of all time in the United States as well as worldwide, besting “The Dark Knight” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” for the honor. As of June 1, the movie made $538 million domestically and $1.3 billion worldwide, placing it behind only Cameron’s “Titanic” and “Avatar.” That’s not the only number-three spot “The Avengers” is in. “Snow White and the Huntsman” has debuted with a strong $20 million Friday gross in its debut weekend, knocking “Men in Black 3” from its top spot last weekend. “MIB3” came in second on Friday with an $8.3 million intake, while “The Avengers” rounded out the top three with $5.7 million. In all likelihood, that ranking will be indicative of the rest of the weekend as well. Considering “The Avengers” has been in theaters for a month, that’s some pretty strong continued momentum. We’ll attribute some of it to fans wanting to support their favorite Avengers going into the 2012 MTV Movie Awards weekend. Captain America and Thor are facing off against each other in the Best Hero category, but they’ve got some stiff competition in the form of Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen and “21 Jump Street” ‘s Jenko. There’s only a very slim chance that “The Avengers” will climb any higher on the all-time box-office charts. In the U.S., it would have to top $659 million to oust Cameron’s “Titanic” and cross $761 million to beat “Avatar.” And it seems even less likely that it will pass either of those movies worldwide, as it would have to more than double its international grosses. Still, not too shabby for Marvel’s group of superheroes. Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: ‘The Avengers’ Related Photos ‘Avengers’ Snow White And The Huntsman

Kristen Stewart Takes Us Inside Her Most Difficult ‘Snow White’ Scene

Best Kiss nominee and Movie Awards presenter says she was ‘so not ready’ for film’s emotionally charged speech. By Amy Wilkinson, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News UNIVERSAL CITY, California — In her latest film, “Snow White and the Huntsman,” actress Kristen Stewart proves that the fabled heroine is not only fair, but incredibly fierce. Suiting up in armor and wielding a glinting sword, Snow White must save her kingdom from the clutches of her evil stepmother, Queen Ravenna (played by Charlize Theron ). Yet, for as much onscreen bravery as she showed, Stewart was admittedly apprehensive about one scene in particular, she revealed during Sneak Peek Week, leading up to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards tomorrow at 9 p.m. ET, where the actress is also a presenter. Stewart, along with co-star Sam Claflin , took to the Universal Studios CityWalk stage to debut an exclusive clip from the film and participate in a 30-minute Q&A session. When asked by a fan in the audience which scene was the most emotional for her to film, the Best Kiss nominee hesitated before recalling a moment late in the movie in which Snow White rallies her troops. Clad in a billowing white gown, Stewart delivers a rousing monologue, encouraging the townspeople to take up arms against the Queen — not for her sake but for their own. “It kept getting kicked to the end of the schedule. It was like, ‘I’m so not ready for that; put that one off a little longer,’ ” Stewart recalled. “Every single day we were re-writing it. I still need to frame that thing — laminate it somehow and give it to Rupert [Sanders] the director — the different renditions of it. It’s disintegrating.” Co-star Claflin was quick to praise Stewart for her performance in the movie’s pivotal moment. “The girl was wearing no shoes in the coldest day of English history and was wearing, like, a nightie,” Claflin said. “I don’t know how she did it, honestly. Man power. Woman power. Girl power … she did a smashing job on that.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Andy Samberg Thinks Russell Brand Will ‘Kill It’ At Movie Awards

‘It’s going to be a real stretch from the VMAs,’ Samberg joked about Brand hosting the Movie Awards, airing Sunday at 9 p.m. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andy Samberg Photo: MTV News UNIVERSAL CITY, California — We already have a good idea of how the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , but will the rest of his show be up to snuff? This will be the two-time Video Music Awards emcee’s first stint , and we’re hoping he will live up to his previous performances. During the , MTV News turned to former Movie Awards host Andy Samberg to hear his prediction on Brand’s hosting prowess. Samberg said that it probably wouldn’t be too different from Brand’s other times hosting MTV awards shows. “It’s going to be a real stretch from the VMAs,” he joked. “What’s he going to do? I just wonder if in the beginning he’s going to have some short film about how he’s got to make it to the Movie Awards in time. Is he going to make it? He’s in this film, how’s he going to make it? Every host seems to have this problem,” Samberg continued sarcastically. It’s true, we’ve seen a host or 10 do that familiar sketch in the past, though Samberg managed to avoid falling into that trap with his hilarious spoof on “Slumdog Millionaire,” “The Reader,” “Twilight” and “Star Trek” during his hosting gig. We’re sure Brand also has something different up his sleeve this year, and Samberg seemed to genuinely be looking forward to seeing what madness the Brit will concoct. “So many ingredients in a Movie Awards stew. I mean, celebs, spoofs, great performances,” he said. But the key ingredient? “A great host. That’s going to kill it, man. Russell’s hilarious.” Samberg took some time to reminisce on his own year hosting the Movie Awards, which apparently earned him $5 (well, in addition to whatever his salary was). Since he hosted back in 2009 — the first year “Twilight” was a nominee — Samberg said he was a little overwhelmed by the fan hysteria. “My year was like the first year of ‘Twilight,’ so you couldn’t hear anything. It was just a din of screaming girls,” he said. “At one point, I walked out and I had a bet with somebody backstage and I just went, ‘Twilight,’ and everyone went, ‘Wahh!’ and I was like, I just made five bucks.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! ‘Avengers’: Blockbuster Gets Bad News For A Change

In this special Movie Awards ‘After Hours’ clip, Clark Gregg goes from smiling to the fetal position. By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Clark Gregg in “The Avengers” Photo: Marvel/Disney UNIVERSAL CITY, California — “The Avengers” is now the third-highest-grossing movie in the world. Most likely everyone involved with the mammoth Marvel superhero production is feeling pretty good about all of the success, right? Well, in this special Movie Awards “After Hours” clip, our own Josh Horowitz managed to bring actor Clark Gregg down. As if getting offed as Agent Coulson wasn’t bad enough (whether he’ll return as the Vision or in some other incarnation remains to be seen), Gregg was forced to confront a collection of sobering figures Josh delivered that drew a stark contrast with all the good “Avengers” news. Sure, the Avengers” was the fastest movie to ever pass $500 million. Yes, “The Avengers” was loved by more than 90 percent of critics. It’s taken in $1.3 billion around the world. But, as Clark learned during “After Hours,” people in Portugal hate him. No, really, they do. And Uruguay? Sheesh … Whether Gregg will fulfill fan dreams by returning to the franchise as the Vision (or in some other incarnation) remains to be seen, but this “After Hours” clip certainly gave him plenty to contemplate, as you’ll see. You’d be shaken up too if you learned 70 billion people would like to see you dead. Watch as Gregg was reduced to a low whisper, stammering for the right words, a shell of the man who happily smiled at the start and even corrected our “After Hours” host about the opening weekend at first. “Two-hundred-and-seven [million] — just what I heard,” he helpfully admonished. “If we’re doing the numbers, Josh.” If fans want to support their favorite Avengers at Sunday’s 2012 MTV Movie Awards , Captain America and Thor are facing off in the Best Hero category — but they’ve got some stiff competition in the form of Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen and “21 Jump Street” cop Jenko. By Jocelyn Vena Kathryn Joosten Photo: Imeh Akpanudosen/ Getty Images Kathryn Joosten, star of hit shows like “Desperate Housewives” and “The West Wing,” died Friday at age 72. The Emmy-winning actress lost her decade-long battle with lung cancer, and a rep told TMZ she was surrounded by family when she passed. She was originally diagnosed with the disease in 2001 and it returned in 2009. “Kathryn passed away this morning after a valiant fight against her cancer,” her rep, told E! News . “Her family was with her. Funeral arrangements are pending. This is a terrible loss, and she fought as hard as she could.” Most recently she was known for playing Wisteria Lane’s very own Karen McCluskey on the hit ABC prime-time dramedy “Desperate Housewives.” Her role on the show earned her two Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series Emmys, in 2005 and 2008. She was nominated again in 2010. By her third nomination, she had been promoted to a series regular despite the Guest Actress nod from the Emmys. Her character died in the final season of the show, which ended last month. Will ‘Magic Mike’ Cast Strip At MTV Movie Awards?

Movie’s co-stars Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey will be sitting front and center at the Movie Awards on Sunday night. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike” Photo: Warner Bros. UNIVERSAL CITY, California — We’d be lying if we said that we weren’t looking forward to a surprise striptease from the cast of “Magic Mike” during the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night. Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and the rest of the cast are going to be sitting front and center in the audience, so it would be a prime location for them to get up and start grinding among the likes of Kristen Stewart and Emma Watson. Fortunately, Movie Awards executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic has a backup plan in case the guys do decide to get their groove on during the show, which airs live tomorrow night at 9 p.m. ET. It just might not be a plan that viewers at home are big fans of. “We go to the big wide shot that’s facing out the door,” he said with a laugh when asked what he’d do if the “Magic Mike” gang started to get naked. Boo to that! Fortunately those men aren’t the only ones in attendance who are famous for getting naked on the big screen. Michael Fassbender will also be gracing the Movie Awards audience, and Ignjatovic said that there’s a (very slim) chance he could try some stripping too. At the same time, we might not even want to see Tatum and his castmembers show off their rocking bods during the Movie Awards, because they might not be so rocking anymore. Tatum teased during our that the pre-shoot regimen for the movie was much more strenuous than what came after. “I think pre-movie is pretty intense because to get butt naked, you have to — there’s a different regimen for getting butt naked, but thank god, it was a short shoot,” Tatum said with a sly grin. “Then we just had fun on the day.” Somehow we doubt the men have let themselves go in the time since, but we’ll use that as our excuse in case we don’t get the Movie Awards all-male striptease we so desire. Russell Brand And Charlie Sheen: ‘Winning’ At The Movie Awards

Sunday’s host sets his sights on Sheen’s seating card in new Twitpic. By Josh Wigler Russell Brand and Charlie Sheen’s seat card Photo: Russell Brand via Twitter UNIVERSAL CITY, California — The world is Russell Brand’s oyster. Well, perhaps not the world, but certainly the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City — that’s the site of the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , which Brand will lord over and command with his own unique (wait for it) brand of comedy on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET. “MTV Movie Awards incorporates two of my favorite things. Movies and Awards. If somehow group sex could be involved it would be the greatest night of my life,” Russell Brand said when he was first announced for the hosting gig. Well, it looks like he’s doing his best to fulfill that wish — from the looks of it, he could be well on his way toward an encounter with some goddesses. Brand, already knee-deep in preparation for the big night (even if former host Andy Samberg doesn’t think he’ll need to do much prep work ), has been spending time on the Movie Awards stage this week, and he’s set his sights on a particular celebrity’s seat: none other than the party god himself, Charlie Sheen . “MTV Awards tomorrow. Got my seat sorted. Winning/wanking,” he wrote on Twitter , accompanied by a photo of him sitting down and holding Sheen’s seat card . We’ve long held a theory that tiger blood is transferable simply by physical contact with any possession belonging to Mr. Sheen. If that truly is the case, Brand is officially walking on Sheen’s winning path. We appreciate the effort, Russell, but don’t you think you’d have better luck on that Group Sex Awards goal by actually attending one of Sheen’s never-ending parties? Just a suggestion, take it or leave it! Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET. ‘Rock Of Ages’ Exclusive Clip: Julianne Hough Is A ‘Jukebox Hero’

Hough and Diego Boneta tackle the Foreigner classic in this Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week clip. By Terri Schwartz Julianne Hough in “Rock of Ages” Photo: Warner Bros. There was only one way to end Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week , and that was to go out with a bang — a rock-and-roll bang with “Rock of Ages.” Stars Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Malin Akerman and director Adam Shankman are on hand to answer a 30-minute Q&A following the movie, but not before they introduced a brand-new clip from “Rock of Ages” for our viewing pleasure. So feast your eyes on the beginning of Hough and Boneta’s rousing take on Foreigner’s “Jukebox Hero.” Clearly some sparks are flying between Hough’s Sherrie Christian and Boneta’s Drew Boley as they search for the right vinyl to buy in a record store. Sherrie’s eyes light up when Drew admits that he wants to be the next Stacee Jaxx, though we’re not sure how Stacee Jaxx feels about that goal. That admission prompts the duo to jump into a stirring, head-banging interpretation of “Jukebox Hero.” Though it’s only a brief tease — they don’t even get to the chorus! — we know from the track list for the soundtrack that this song is actually a medley with Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin’s take on “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Now that’s something we’re dying to see. We’re expecting lots of “Rock of Ages” references during the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , what with Brand hosting . The Brit is known for his tendency to go off the wall while hosting MTV awards shows, so we’re hoping he pulls the during the Movie Awards. ‘Rock Of Ages’ Star Recalls Tongue-Heavy Tom Cruise Make-Out

‘It was literally like two dogs licking each other,’ Malin Akerman laughs to MTV News during Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Malin Akerman Photo: MTV News UNIVERSAL CITY, California — The leading couple from “Rock of Ages,” Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta, were joined by Malin Akerman and director Adam Shankman for the final installment of MTV’s Sneak Peek Week on Friday, just two days before the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday. The “Rock of Ages” cast sat down at 5 Towers on Universal CityWalk, where they not only chatted about the splashy big-screen adaptation of the Broadway show, but also dropped an exclusive sneak peek from the highly anticipated June release, which also features MTV Movie Awards host Russell Brand , Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Catherine Zeta-Jones and more. And while Hough and Boneta share a sweet, tender love story in the flick, Akerman’s rock reporter and Cruise’s rock star Stacee Jaxx, well, their love affair is a bit more torrid. “I think I’m the only person who can say that Tom Cruise has sang into my ass,” she laughed, recalling a scene in which, while in her undies, Cruise actually sings with his face right up to her butt. Is that the Oscars calling? “It’s amazing! I’m very proud of it,” she added. “I can’t wait to tell my grandfather about it. It was an unbelievable experience. First of all, to be able to do a duet with Tom Cruise and then to undress him and pretend to make love to him on an air hockey table [while singing ‘I Want to Know What Love Is’]. It was one of the most unbelievable scenes of my life. It was so much fun.” While they do exchange kisses, they redefine the term “French kissing.” “People keep saying, ‘Oh, your kiss with Tom Cruise!’ It was literally like two dogs licking each other,” she said. “They call action, we go for it, and it is tongue all over.” So was it hot? Director Shankman explained: “It was so disgusting.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! President Obama To Debut First Re-Election Ad During Movie Awards

Commercial features Sarah Jessica Parker, who will invite lucky donors to her home for an Obama fundraiser. By Ryan J. Downey President Barack Obama Photo: AFP/Getty Images The MTV Movie Awards traditionally feature many leaders from the world of pop culture. This year, the leader of the United States has chosen the Movie Awards to debut his first official re-election campaign commercial. MTV News can report that President Obama’s first 2012 campaign ad will air during the show, which begins live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET. President Obama’s campaign spot won’t be totally incongruous with the glam and glitz of the awards show. The ad features “Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker, who will invite supporters to her home for an Obama fundraiser co-hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Campaign donors will have a chance to win a pair of tickets, which will be raffled off by Obama re-election campaign organizers. On Friday, the Obama camp released a video where Wintour voiced her support for the President, who is running for a second term. The commercial comes at a pivotal moment in Obama’s bid for re-election. In May, the president made headlines when he announced his support for same-sex marriage , making him the highest ranking elected official to do so in American history. While several celebrities voiced their support , others thought it was a calculated attempt to gain voters. Obama’s biggest challenge will come from presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney, who has contrasted his worldview with that of the Obama administration, most pointedly when it comes to economic policy. He has pledged to repeal Obama’s healthcare reform bill and would like to lawfully define marriage as between a man and a woman, among other platform distinctions.
