Hero Teacher: Kaitlin Roig Describes Barricading Students in Bathroom During Shooting

Heroic teacher Kaitlin Roig did whatever she could to protect students as gunman Adam Lanza stormed Newtown, Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School. In an interview with ABC News, the third grade teacher described how she barricaded all 14 of her students into the bathroom connected to her classroom: Kaitlin Roig, Hero Teacher “I put one of my students on top of the toilet,” she recalled. “I just knew we had to get in there. I was telling them ‘It’s going to be OK, you’re going to be alright.’” “I had pulled a bookshelf, before I closed a door, in front of it, so we were completely barricaded in.” Her quick thinking likely saved the lives of 14 young people and herself Friday morning. She told students that they had to remain absolutely quiet fearing that the gunman or gunmen might hear them and begin shooting at the bathroom door. “There are bad guys out there now, we need to wait for the good guys,” she told them. Adam Lanza killed 26 people at the school, including principal Dawn Hochsprung and 20 children. He also killed his mother and himself, bringing the toll to 28. The Connecticut school shooting ranks among the worst mass murders in United States history. President Obama will visit Newtown on Sunday.

Tit For Tat–American University Professor Whips Her Lady Lumps Out During Class!

What??…her daughter was hungry?! The single-mom Professor was in a bind and brought her baby girl to work…but none of her students expected her to break her tiddays out of her top during their lecture. Adrienne Pine was in a jam. The assistant anthropology professor at American University was about to begin teaching “Sex, Gender & Culture,” but her baby daughter woke up in the morning with a fever. The single mother worried that she had no good child-care options. So Pine brought her sick baby to class. The baby, in a blue onesie, crawled on the floor of the lecture hall during part of the 75-minute class two weeks ago, according to the professor’s account. The mother extracted a paper clip from the girl’s mouth at one point and shooed her away from an electrical outlet. A teaching assistant held the baby and rocked her at times, volunteering to help even though Pine stressed that she didn’t have to. When the baby grew restless, Pine breast-fed her while continuing her lecture in front of 40 students. Now Pine finds herself at the center of a debate over whether she did the right thing that day and what the ground rules are for working parents who face such child-care dilemmas.“Every working parent can empathize with facing the choice of an important day at work when a child gets sick,” officials added in a second statement Tuesday afternoon. “Both demand your focus and attention. There is no easy or ideal alternative.”Some students interviewed Tuesday said breast-feeding doesn’t belong in the classroom. University officials, however, said professors should avail themselves of other options rather than expose students to potential illness. “For the sake of the child and the public health of the campus community, when faced with the challenge of caring for a sick child in the case where backup childcare is not available, a faculty member should take earned leave and arrange for someone else to cover the class, not bring a sick child into the classroom,” university spokeswoman Camille Lepre said in an e-mail. The Baytown Disco Trailer: Smokin’ Aces Meets… Gigli?

If the Tremor brothers were slightly less-deranged they might be the Southern-fried antiheroes of The Baytown Disco , whose trailer reveals a startling lack of disco and copious amounts of gun-battling, yee-hawing, and evil Billy Bob Thornton . (Oh, evil Billy Bob! How I love you.) Watch as Eva Longoria taps the trio of redneck bros to kidnap her godson — and in the process, invite road warriors, Thornton’s “whore assassins,” and Stefan from The Vampire Diaries to hunt them down — in Baytown Disco ‘s Smokin’ Aces -meets- Gigli trailer. The Oodie brothers are played by Clayne Crawford (who actually battled the Tremor bros. in the direct-to-video sequel Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball ), Daniel Cudmore ( Twilight , X-Men ), and Travis Fimmel; The “Southern whip-ass extravaganza” is directed by Barry Battles from his Black List ’09 script with Griffin Hood and also stars Andre Braugher (!), Meagan Good, Michael Rapaport, Paul Wesley, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Zoe Bell, and Agnes Brucker. The synopsis: The rousing rebel spirit of a family of Southern thugs takes off at breakneck speed in “The Baytown Disco” — a wickedly playful, high-velocity action-comedy in which three infamously ruthless Alabama brothers find themselves on the wrong side of crooked cops, relentless Feds, mad mobsters, road pirates, tomahawk-wielding bikers, tricky femme fatales and an unforgettable cast of characters as colorful as they are lethal when they finally try to do a single good deed. Academy Award® winner Billy Bob Thornton and Golden Globe winner Eva Longoria headline this wildly explosive, yet ultimately moving, tale of honor breaking out among thieves with madcap results. It all starts when the fetching Celeste (Longoria) has a falling out with her nefarious ex-husband Carlos (Thornton) who kidnaps her beloved son, Rob (Thomas Brodie Sangster). Knowing her ex can be a maniacal psychopath, not to mention a bit trigger-happy, she turns for help to the most bad-ass, lawless hit-man trio in Alabama: the Oodie Brothers. Ringleader Brick (Clayne Crawford, “24,” “The Glades”), mute wrestling phenom Lincoln (Daniel Cudmore, “The Twilight Saga”), and the baby of the brothers, the kick-ass G.I. McQueen (Travis Fimmel, “The Beast”) are known for being mean as a bag of rattlesnakes –and measly kidnap rescues are not on their menu of services. But when Brick is unexpectedly moved by Celeste’s plight, what he thinks is going to be an easy smash-and-grab job turns out to be the most hair-raising and hilariously intense adventure of his and his brothers’ harrowing careers. Suddenly the Oodies have their hometown Sheriff (Andre Braugher, “Men of a Certain Age,” “Salt”), in a tangle; a pesky DEA Agent (Paul Wesley, “Vampire Diaries”) on their trail, and Carlos and his heinous assortment of henchman out for their hides. With no one quite who or what they seem, they are headed for a showdown — and a shot at redemption — they never saw coming. The Baytown Disco is seeking distribution, release TBA.

‘Fix Edukation Now’ — A Plea for Education Reform From the Movies

This country’s public education system has been in dire need of a boost for years — just look at the evidence collected by the diligent folks at Next Movie ; they’ve created a PSA from all your favorite movie student/slackers (because not all of America’s bright young stars of tomorrow can argue their way from a C+ to an A-). Ah, the classroom movie. So ripe a setting for tales of crap teachers learning to lead and crap students learning to learn. For some reason the ultimate movie about teaching and teachers is absent from the above honor roll — yes, I speak of 1995’s Dangerous Minds , the movie that taught us the most important lesson of all: That even a two-hit wonder like Coolio could make one of the best (according to Billboard ) ditties of all time. Seriously, kids. If Coolio can make it, so can you. [via Next Movie ]

Is Perceptual Learning An Important Skill For The Classroom?

See original here:

I recently read a New York Times article that explained the interesting concept of “perceptual learning,” which involves training the mind to memorize patterns rather than just learning concepts straight off. This method is being investigated by a small group of scientists who have evidence that proficiency improves when students in schools are groomed to use their “sensitive perpetual radar” to make educated inquiries on problems, rather than purely going through a structured process taught to them by the teacher. With the added component of incorporating individual perception into the scholarly experience, children as young as middle school have been shown the opportunity to grasp difficult concepts in math or science with the benefit of using their intuition rather than convention. The idea of having a “trained eye” through experience of repetition and patterns may be harder to acquire than basic techniques for problem solving, but isn’t practice involved in developing any skill? In this fast-paced world, many times people forget that the simple intuitive parts of our brain hold a lot of credit for the things we can learn to do. If we were to hone these perceptive parts of ourselves at an early age, how could this affect how we learn and process information as a whole? New Job Opportunities Planned For Graduating Class Of 2015 Since “teaching to the test” is extremely common these days, with schools being forced to bring up their reputations based on test scores, the whole definition of “teaching” has changed. With certain amounts of time allotted for teaching specific topics, teaching has become a rushed, overburdened task from its former self. In United States specifically, the overemphasis on standardized tests such as the SATs even as young as middle school age has caused an onslaught of stress, and therefore a decrease in the performance and stamina of students in the classroom. If “perceptual learning” was demonstrated and encouraged early on in learning, how would it affect students and how they view the large amount of information they are faced with? As a physics teacher, Joe Wise states in the article, in reference to underlying skills, “It’s not how well you do, but how well you learn.” Through gaining the building blocks for problem solving by tapping into intuition over structured problem sets, the general skills required for living in the real world might be more readily available from the get-go. Through learning from intuitive experience, trial-and-error tasks, and more prolonged emphasis on patterns and repetition, could we mold a stronger group of young learners? Is Having A Best Friend Healthy For Your Child? Despite the structures that already harness the education system, “perceptual learning” is definitely a strong-point of reference for parents and educators alike to consider when teaching children complex subjects like math and science. Back in my days as a student, math problems and scientific equations always eluded me, as my strong points have always been in English and history. If there had been a way to learn long equations and calculations through a more hands-on learning style, maybe I would not have struggled so much in my school days. The fact that the current children of America live in a time when scientists are working on more comprehensive ways of learning is important for parents and teachers to acknowledge. It is only with education that improvements can be made in the world as a whole, so paying attention to the improvements in the learning curve is vital for future generations!
