Bizarre news out of Wisconsin today, as two 12-year-old girls stabbed a classmate as a result of their obsession with a popular Internet meme. “Slender Man” is character created by Eric Knudsen that first appeared on the comedy website Something Awful in 2009. Slender Man Stabbing Report The character was meant to be a sort of Blair Witch-style prank on the Internet, and fans were asked to manipulate photographs, accompany them with made-up backstories and post them on websites as though they were real. Sadly, the unnamed pre-teens in Waukesha, Wisconsin didn’t understand that the Slender Man story was intended to be a sort of crowd-sourced work of fiction. When they were questioned by police after stabbing their friend 19 times, the girls reportedly stated that they hoped to commit a murder in hopes of becoming “proxies” or acolytes of Slender Man. The girls are now being held in a juvenile detention center and will reportedly be charged as adults. The attorney for one of the girls has stated that his client is mentally ill, and unable to distinguish fantasy from reality. Despite being left in the woods to die, the victim of the stabbing is expected to recover.
The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Apollo Nida pleaded guilty to charges of mail, wire and bank fraud in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He could be going to jail for a long, long time. Apollo Nida’s crimes could land him in prison for up to 30 years and a fine of up to $1 million on top of restitution for an estimated $2.3 million he allegedly defrauded. His co-conspirator Gayla St. Julien, who said Nida ran the show and helped turn him in after she was arrested, has received a sentence of 61 months last month. Nida will be sentenced on July 8 at 2 p.m. The assistant U.S. attorney said Apollo opened a fake debt collection agency to gain access to databases full of individuals’ personal information. He would then steal people’s ID and find unclaimed funds , refunds from HUD, stolen treasury checks and refunds from fraudulent U.S. income tax returns. Nida had St. Julien open UPS mailboxes and bank checking accounts using those fake identities, deposit those checks, then pocket the money. So why would he do it when he’s already well taken care of by wife Phaedra Parks? Partly for that reason, he said in court. The pressure to keep up was intense! Nida said he takes “full responsibility for my actions” and expressed regret for hurting his family and any individuals and institutions affected by his fraud. Apollo Nida Pleads Guilty In ID Theft Scheme “It was a dumb situation I put myself in,” he said. In 2009, Nida had just left prison after five years for racketeering charges related to auto title fraud. He and Phaedra Parks , a prominent attorney, married. He said she was making far more than him and he felt pressure to keep up. Without easy legitimate ways to make quick money, he opted for this scheme. He said he even had a nervous breakdown at one point over the pressures to “sustain a lifestyle … I got sucked in and engulfed and lost sight of things,” he said. But he claimed to her he was running a legitimate debt recovery firm and kept her firmly in the dark. And once he started the scheme, he found it difficult to stop. Nida said he often didn’t think about whether this was hurting anybody because he was primarily targeting businesses and the government, not individuals. “It’s my fault at the end of the day,” he said. Since Nida is not expected to go to prison until July, when you watch The Real Housewives of Atlanta next season, this will definitely play out on Bravo. Driver Who Killed Teen Bicyclist Sues his Family For $1 Million via Fox News The family of a teenage bicyclist who died after being hit from behind by an SUV is now being sued for more than $1 million by the woman who was behind the wheel. Sharlene Simon claims in court papers the accident caused her “great pain and suffering” and accuses her victim Brandon Majewski 17, and his two friends of negligence, calling them “incompetent bicyclists,” the Toronto Sun reported Friday. The lawsuit drew an angry response from Brandon’s family. “I feel like someone kicked me in the stomach — I’m over the edge,” his father, Derek Majewski, told the Sun. “Sometimes, it makes my blood boil.” The dad’s attorney Brian Cameron told the Sun that in all his years as a lawyer, he had never seen anyone ever sue a child that they killed. “It’s beyond the pale,” he said. He is representing the elder Majewski in a seperate lawsuit that seeks $900,000 in damages from Simon. The accident happened early in the morning of Oct. 28, 2012, on a dark, rural road in Innisfil, about 55 miles north of Toronto. Brandon’s two friends were both 16. One was seriously injured; the other escaped injury. They are also defendants in Simon’s lawsuit, as is the county where the accident occurred. Simon, a 42-year-old mother of three, said she was going about 55 mph in her KIA Sorrento when she hit the boys — about 5 mph more than the speed limit, the Ottawa Citizen said. No criminal charges were ever filed against her. “It’s a tragedy what happened to the boys, but it’s also a tragedy that’s happened to (Simon),” her lawyer Michael Ellis told the Toronto Star. “I understand their grief and I understand what they must be going through is awful, but my client is also living with this nightmare every day.” Shutterstock
Tim Zickuhr of Ice Road Truckers fame is charged with first degree kidnapping, extortion, and coercion after allegedly abducting a Las Vegas prostitute. He is also accused of forcing her to jump out of a second story window. According to the official police report, the prostitute goes by Snow White . She told the cops that Tim Zickuhr hired her to perform “services” on December 18 and in doing so, he gave her his ATM card to withdraw her payment. He accused the hooker of taking too much, though, and things got ugly. Snow claims Tim set up a meeting at his apartment the next day to settle the dispute, and when she arrived, he attacked, punching her in the face. He allegedly threatened to kill her if she didn’t return the “stolen” cash. If you believe her side, he didn’t stop too far short of that threat, tying her up with backpack straps, beating her senseless and pouring cold water on her. When he demanded a phone number of someone who could get him the money, Snow pulled a fast one and gave him Tim the number of a cop she knew. Zickuhr actually called it, claiming he was ready to kill her over $1,000. Tim and the police officer (unbeknownst to him) arranged a meeting, only Tim allegedly forced Snow White of out his second story window beforehand. The officer eventually met and arrested the Ice Road Truckers star. At that point, apparently Tim admitted it all – the phone calls, abusing the crap out of Snow White in the room and pushing her out of the window. Insane. Muslim Woman Sues Planet Fitness For Refusing To Let Her Work Out In Headdress A Muslim woman is pursuing her lawsuit against Planet Fitness after she says the refused to allow her to workout in a religious head covering. via News One Tarainia McDaniel (pictured), recently filed a lawsuit against a Planet Fitness in New Mexico over an incident that occurred in October 2011, claiming that the gym wouldn’t allow her to wear her religious head covering when she tried to work out, reports Albuquerque Journal. According to the 37-year-old Albuquerque resident, she signed a two-year contract with the New Hampshire-based business at one location where she was never given a problem about wearing her Muslim head covering. When McDaniel transferred her membership to another Planet Fitness location, though, she was allegedly told that her religious head covering was not allowed because it was against the gym’s dress code, according to the lawsuit. However, the gym in question did display a sign that read, “No jeans, work boots, bandannas, skull caps, or revealing apparel.” McDaniel alleges in her complaint that she asked the gym’s representatives if she could wear her head covering to accommodate her faith and even asked if she could instead wear a hijab, a more formal piece that covers the head and chest. McDaniel claims that her requests were flatly denied and told that the head coverings were direct violations of the strict gym dress codes. Planet Fitness’ attorney, Erika Anderson ,defends her client’s position regarding the case, telling Albuquerque Journal, “My client’s position is that they didn’t know the head covering was for religious purposes. It violated their dress code policy. But the New Mexico Human Rights Act and the Unfair Practices Act states that Planet Fitness had no legal right to deny McDaniel entry on to its facility while wearing her religious head covering. According to Raw Story: A Pennsylvania man said police shocked him with a Taser stun gun while he was receiving medical attention in an ambulance for an apparent seizure. Darren Scott, of Upland, was jailed on $100,000 bond on charges including aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest following the March 12 incident, reported The Philadelphia Inquirer . Police said the 48-year-old Scott was “extremely combative,” kicked a paramedic, and grabbed and pushed a police officer, who said he believed the patient was under the influence of narcotics. But Scott’s attorney said his client had smoked only a small amount of marijuana the night before. An employee of Two Js Sandwich Shop told police she was waiting on Scott when she noticed his eyes roll back into his head, so she grabbed his clothes to steady him and keep him from falling. Emergency crews were called, and Scott was placed on a stretcher and taken to an ambulance over his protests. Both police and prosecutors are investigating the incident. “We look at it from the perspective of what a reasonable police officer would do,” said District Attorney Jack Whelan, adding that the officer did not use the Taser until Scott kicked the paramedic in the chest.
