DMX Sentenced To Six Months For Probation Violation

Rapper tested positive for cocaine use. By Gil Kaufman DMX (file) Photo: Jason Kempin/FilmMagic DMX was sentenced to six months in an Arizona jail on Tuesday for violating his probation by using drugs. The rapper (born Earl Simmons), who has been in jail since his arrest on March 9 for five counts of probation violation, admitted to a single violation for failing a court-mandated drug test last June and testing positive for cocaine, according to The Arizona Republic. Though she could have sent him to prison for the infringement, Maricopa County Superior Court Commissioner Christine Mulleneaux reinstated X’s probation over the objections of the prosecutor. In addition to ordering him to spend six months in jail, Mulleneaux said the troubled rapper must undergo a mental health evaluation to search for possible underlying psychological issues that might be driving his need to self-medicate. She said he could be released earlier if he is accepted into a court-approved drug rehabilitation program. As a result, X seemed destined to be the next star to land on the VH1 reality show “Celebrity Rehab,” as he’s already been accepted by the Pasadena Recovery Center, which is the setting for the show hosted by addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky. But show staffer Will Smith told the paper that the “Party Up” rapper would not join the cast of “Rehab” because he is destined for a lockdown facility. “He’s looking at nine months to a year of treatment,” Smith said. Where Simmons, 39, ends up depends on whether California allows him to serve out his intensive probation in the state, a sentence that will keep him under virtual house arrest until December. If not, X may have to undergo the Maricopa County Sheriff’s substance-abuse treatment program at the jail where he is currently incarcerated. The rapper’s attorney, Glenn Allen, told the court that his client was “desperately trying to get hold of his demons” and beat the long-running drug addiction problems that have plagued him for several years and derailed a once-promising acting and music career, which included a record as the only artist in SoundScan history to have his first four albums debut at #1. In court, Mulleneaux told X that she believed he was sincere but needs treatment. Since 1999, X has been arrested more than half a dozen times for drug and weapon possession, false identity charges, theft and animal cruelty charges. Related Artists DMX

‘Iamamiwhoami’: Is Swedish Singer Jonna Lee Behind Viral Campaign?

Her management denies involvement, but some eagle-eyed fans beg to differ. By James Montgomery Unknown woman from Iamamiwhoami video Photo: iamamiwhoami Back in January, amid much speculation to the contrary, a rep for Christina Aguilera denied that her client had anything to do with the ongoing “Iamamiwhoami” viral campaign , telling MTV News: “It’s 100 percent not her … not sure why people think it is.” And yet, despite that denial (and a second one issued just last week), Aguilera’s name kept being mentioned in connection with the maddeningly complex campaign , even as mysterious packages were sent to MTV News and more and more Iamami videos were released. But on Sunday, with the debut of the seventh Iamami clip , all that speculation may finally be over. We might finally know the person responsible for the engrossing (and pretty gross) viral campaign: Jonna Lee , a singer/songwriter from Sweden. In a lengthy post on celebrity-obsessed LiveJournal community Oh No They Didn’t , a pair of keen-eyed readers noticed the similarities between Lee and the muck-smeared heroine of the Iamami video series — the nose, the teeth, the eyes — similarities no amount of masking tape (which our heroine covered herself in for the latest vid) could hide. Also strangely similar is an electric organ seen in the new video, which also makes an appearance in a “making of” clip for Lee’s latest album, and Lee’s backing musicians, who look very much like the guys featured in the newest Iamami video. And given all those similarities, it seemed like the mystery was finally solved. Only, perhaps it isn’t. Because Lee’s music only bears a passing resemblance to the ethereal, downright eerie electronic stuff being unveiled in the viral videos (her latest single, “Something So Quiet,” is perhaps the closest match). And, according to her management, she has nothing to do with Iamami. “If Jonna is involved in this, we have no knowledge of such,” Jamie Jaffe, who works for Lee’s North American management team, Philadelphonic, told MTV News in an e-mail Monday (March 15). “The only upcoming projects we are aware of are the development of her third album and her upcoming SXSW performances.” Then again, from the sound of things, Lee is working on a new album, and MTV News’ e-mails to her Swedish label, Razzia, seeking comment were not returned. So there’s still nothing official to report. But for the first time since the Iamami campaign began in December, we might actually be getting close to figuring this whole thing out. Do you think the Iamamiwhoami mystery has been solved? Let us know your theories below! Related Artists Jonna Lee

Shane Sparks Pleads Not Guilty in Molestation Case

So You Think You Can Dance and America’s Best Dance Crew judge Shane Sparks officially entered a not guilty plea to eight counts of child molestation today. What Would ‘My Life As Liz’ Star Liz Lee ‘Telephone’ Lady Gaga About?

‘I want to know what’s going on in her mind,’ she tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Liz Lee Photo: MTV News In honor of Lady Gaga ‘s “Telephone” music video premiere on Thursday (March 11), MTV News got celebrities to weigh in on what they would ask Gaga about on a phone call, if they could ask about anything in the world. So this week, we will be rolling out their burning questions for the pop princess. And stay tuned to MTV News for more on the “Telephone” video. Liz Lee kind of loves Lady Gaga. In fact, the “My Life as Liz” star admits that she is so taken by all of Gaga’s incarnations, both in real life and in her videos, that she just really wants to hang out with her and pick her brain, just like “Twilight” heartthrob Kellan Lutz . So her question for Gaga is pretty clear: Where do her crazy ideas come from? “What would I call her about? … I want to know what’s going on in her mind,” Lee told MTV News when she stopped by to chat about the season finale of her show . “Like, where does she come up with this stuff?” While she’s thoroughly impressed with her creativity, Lee is also a bit baffled by it. “I am so confused,” she said. “I applaud her, but I just don’t understand. Like, I don’t comprehend it. Like her music videos and the way she dresses and how she can meet the queen of England wearing, like, spandex and fishnets — that’s amazing. How does she get away it?” Until she can get on the phone with Gaga, Lee has another request: to hang out with the pop princess herself. If she can hang with “Jersey Shore” starlet Snooki , then why not Gaga, right? “I just want to hang out with her, just on a normal basis and see what it’s like,” she said. What would you call Lady Gaga about? Tell us in the comments below! Corey Feldman, Agent Don’t Believe Corey Haim Died Of Drug Overdose

Actor was reportedly dating ‘Daisy of Love’ star Daisy de la Hoya at time of his death. By Gil Kaufman Corey Feldman and Corey Haim Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Corey Haim’s agent doesn’t believe his client died of a drug overdose, as has been speculated amid reports that prescription drug bottles were found near the actor’s body. On Tuesday, the day the 38-year-old “Lost Boys” actor died in his mother Judy’s Hollywood apartment, Mark Heaslip told TMZ that Haim had a fever and was having trouble breathing, so a doctor was called to the apartment to check up on the actor. Heaslip said that Judy fell asleep Monday night and woke up at around midnight to find her son standing over her just before he collapsed. She called 911 immediately, but Heaslip — who said he doesn’t believe Haim died of a drug overdose — said it took an ambulance 20 minutes to arrive at the apartment, by which point it was too late. Haim’s good friend and frequent co-star Corey Feldman also told Larry King on Wednesday night that he doesn’t believe his frequent co-star died of an overdose. The actor had been on the comeback trail, according to the producer of one of the final films he worked on, “The Dead Sea.” Producer Rick Tucker said Haim insisted on a drug-and-alcohol free set on the movie he was filming when he died, TMZ reported . Another reported bright spot in Haim’s life before his death was a new relationship with a fellow reality star who allegedly tried to help save him from his addiction demons. E! Online reported that Haim began dating 27-year-old “Daisy of Love” star Daisy de la Hoya after recently being introduced to the VH1 star by Feldman. “I’m sooooooo devastated right now,” de la Hoya reportedly tweeted on Wednesday on her protected Twitter page according to E! “This is the worst day ever I can’t believe this.” An unnamed source close to de la Hoya told the site that the romance between the two was new, but that it had its roots in a longtime crush. “Daisy loved ‘The Lost Boys,’ and she always had a crush on Corey,” the source said. “Their first official date was two weeks ago, but they’d been hanging out a little while before that. Corey invited her to the Playboy Mansion. Corey Feldman came, too.” The dating-show veteran apparently wanted to help Haim with his drug-dependency struggles. “Daisy knew Corey was doing a lot of drugs — especially prescription meds,” the source said. “She thought he was kind and talented, and she wanted to rescue him. She became his confidant over the last few weeks.” Though the relationship was new and they weren’t exclusive, a rep for de la Hoya said she was “bawling and inconsolable” when she got the news about Haim, tweeting, “Why do I always fall for the lost soul? We could of been lost together, now your lost forever … I’ll miss you.” Although police reportedly found a number of prescription drug bottles at the apartment where Haim was found, authorities have not declared a cause of death pending an investigation and pending autopsy . Travis McCoy Says New Album Is ‘Music To Have A Good Time To’

‘Now a lot of the records are happy,’ Gym Class Heroes frontman says. By James Montgomery Travis “Travie” McCoy First things first: Travis McCoy wants to be known as “Travie” these days. After all, that’s how he’s always been known amongst his family and friends. “I mean, anybody who knows me already calls me that. No one in my circle calls me Travis. Even my family, at a young age started calling me ‘Travie,’ ” he said, cracking up slightly. “So I want people to feel comfortable calling me ‘Travie.’ It’s almost like inviting people in. You can be part of the family, so long as you buy the album.” And that brings us to the second point — his long-in-the-works solo album, which McCoy wants you to know is no longer called The Lazarus Project, for legal reasons … involving Paul Walker. “Unfortunately we had to change the title to just Lazarus, because there’s already this movie out there called ‘The Lazarus Project,’ ” he explained. “So we’re just calling the record Lazarus now. It’s more to the point.” And all this talk of labels, nicknames and titles is sort of relevant to McCoy in general. Because ever since he burst onto the scene with Gym Class Heroes (McCoy and the band are currently at work on a new LP), people have struggled to slap a label on the charismatic frontman. Is he a rapper? A rock star? Something in between? Certainly GCH’s hip-hop leaning 2008 album The Quilt didn’t help matters any and now, with Lazarus on the horizon (it’s tentatively due in June), McCoy is facing another round of critical labeling. And yes, it’s a bit annoying. “It’s hard to put a stamp on the record. With anything I do, it’s hard to categorize it. With any project, I just go in and blindly start writing songs and then find out which way we want to go with it. This one took a bit longer to find the lane,” he said. “It was a year in the making. … We thought we had found the lane, then I started doing other sh–. Now that it’s done and I’ve listened to it a bunch of times, I’ll say that it’s got a pop appeal … the songs will appeal to a broader range of people as opposed to the hip-hop crowd or conventional GCH crowd.” Initially, the songs on Lazarus reflected the dark times in McCoy’s life … inspired mainly by his breakup with longtime girlfriend Katy Perry . But in the months following the split, he said he found a new outlook on life. And the new songs he wrote reflected that shift. “A lot of the music started off pretty dark and introspective, but now a lot of the records are happy. I stopped being so bitter about my life and situations,” McCoy said. “I hate going back to this, but I went through a sh—y breakup, so a lot of records were bitter in the beginning. Sad and mad about sh–, but then I found a median with myself. I realized I don’t have it that bad, so I figured, why dampen the mood with sad, sh—y records?” And on Monday (March 8) fans can get an official taste of what Lazarus will offer, when the first single — a song called “Billionaire” — premieres on MTV.com. But don’t let the title fool you: This isn’t your average, run-of-the-mill song about Benjamins. ” ‘Billionaire’ is basically about, you know, like ‘Brewster’s Millions.’ It’s me talking about what would happen if I would somehow manage to become a billionaire. What would I do with the money?” he explained. “Don’t get it wrong, I’m far from a billionaire. I think I just made it out the ‘thousandaire’ category. So it’s about what I would do with the money and, the same time, it opens up the question, if you were in a position to do something with a decent chunk of money, what would you do?” And that’s sort of the balance McCoy is striking on Lazarus — a little bit of the serious, a little bit of the social, but, of course, a whole lot fun, too. That’s the point of making songs like this, no matter how you choose to label them. “I’ve always wanted this album to come out in the summer, because that’s when most of the memorable music drops,” he said. “You want music to have a good time to, music to connect to. You wanna play it at the party.”

Lil Wayne Finally Set To Be Sentenced, Begin Jail Term Today

Dental surgery and a courthouse fire postponed Weezy’s previous sentencing dates. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Thaddeus After a delay at his request due to dental surgery , a postponement Tuesday because of a courthouse fire and then rescheduling his court date Wednesday, Lil Wayne is set to finally be sentenced and begin his one-year prison term stemming from a 2007 gun arrest on Monday (March 8). The rapper was set to be sentenced last month, but Wayne’s attorney requested a delay so the rapper could undergo eight root canals . Judge Charles H. Solomon agreed to the last-minute request and rescheduled the proceedings for Tuesday. Then, just hours before he was set to appear before Judge Charles H. Solomon on Tuesday, a fire broke out at the Manhattan Criminal Court Building. At the first sign of smoke, the building was evacuated and all appearances were postponed. Lil Wayne’s attorney, Stacey Richman, confirmed to MTV News that her client’s case had temporarily been postponed as a result of the fire. The next day, Weezy’s court date was once again rescheduled. Wayne is now set to appear before Solomon on Monday afternoon and plead guilty to attempted gun possession. He’s then expected to turn himself in immediately to begin his prison term. Lil Wayne has spent his unexpected free time partying in NYC, traveling back to his Miami home and, of course, recording. The rapper reached a deal with prosecutors in November to plead out to a lesser deal, and in return, he is expected to be released from prison as early as October. In 2007, Lil Wayne was arrested for attempted gun possession following his first headlining performance in Manhattan at the Beacon Theatre. New York is among the toughest states in the country when it comes to gun-possession laws. In other states, Lil Wayne could have gotten off with a misdemeanor rap and probation. However, in New York, only law-enforcement officials and those affiliated with authorities are permitted to carry firearms. Ultimately, what Lil Wayne pleaded guilty to amounts to him being able to have access to a gun. Police did not find a weapon on the rapper when his tour bus was searched. Rather, the gun — registered to his manager — was in a bag located near the rapper, hence the “attempted” charge. Lil Wayne has been working feverishly in recent weeks to complete a number of videos and songs to stay relevant during his physical absence. That pace he’s gotten accustomed to, however, will come to a screeching halt, according to a New York corrections officer who spoke to MTV News. “He’ll be housed with inmates who are classified in his category, and he’ll be able to be a regular inmate,” the guard said. “He’ll be able to watch television, go into the day room and congregate with people of his classification. “He’ll have no preferable treatment at all. He’ll be treated like a regular inmate,” the guard, who declined to be identified due to the classified information he discussed, added. Lil Wayne is still facing charges in Arizona , and that trial is set to begin March 30. Related Videos Lil Wayne’s ‘Road To Rikers’

Whitney Houston Humiliates Herself in Concert

Remember when Whitney Houston was an incredible singer with a slew of number-one hits? If were born after 1992, the answer is probably: Whitney who?!? The crooner is attempting a comeback this year, performing a number of concerts in Australia. Following a stop in Brisbane this week, however, the tour is off to a worse start than last week’s Tiger Woods’ press conference . Thousands of fans walked out in the middle of the show, after Houston humilated herself with the following version of “I Will Always Love You.” In between coughing fits and flat notes, a back up singer actually sung the high parts. Amazing. Depressing… Whitney Houston in Concert How does Andrew McManus, Whitney’s tour manager, defend his client, who has an entire European tour ahead of her this spring? By admitting she’s totally washed up, but trying really, really hard. “[She] is now up on stage, warts and all, presenting herself like an open book for the world to see,” McManus said. “If they expected to hear the Whitney of 20 years ago, go buy a CD. If they want to see a true professional artist give 100%, come along and enjoy the ride of an amazing talent, on stage, letting her heart and soul out.” She’s also letting a lot of phlegm out in the clip above. Houston should probably get that checked out.
