Brangelina Going Strong on Valentine’s Day

Haters try to keep them down, but Brangelina keeps on shining. Angelina Jolie has not only donated money and time to Haiti , she bought partner Brad Pitt an olive tree – a symbol for peace and longevity – to mark Valentine’s Day. The star – who raises six kids (possibly with baby #7 come in order to save their love ) with Brad – will surprise him on the romantic day with the 200-year-old plant. A source said: “Angelina bought it from a nursery called The English Garden Centre in Valbonne, near their house. It’s a very special tree and cost her a fortune.” Olive trees symbolize peace, longevity and stability and it is believed Angelina has bought the plant for Brad to cement their love and quash recent split rumors. Brangelina haters, step off. Don’t believe the hype. This love is the real deal. The couple put on a solid show of unity at the Super Bowl in Florida on Sunday, taking their eight-year-old son Maddox to watch the annual NFL championship game. They were also making out in public there – take that, tabloids ! The Valentine’s Day gift may be an expensive purchase, but it’s nothing new for pair – known for their lavish spending – who donated $1 million to Haiti relief efforts. Who knows if the tree will set them free of speculation that a breakup is imminent, but it looks like these two may be happier and more normal than some think. Who would have guessed?

Bill Clinton Released From Hospital After Surgery

Bill Clinton was released this morning from a New York hospital after having two stents into a clogged coronary artery Thursday after complaining of chest pains. The one-hour procedure went smoothly, according to the former President’s cardiologist, and the 63-year-old was discharged this morning “in excellent health.” Clinton will soon return to his work on Haiti’s relief and long-term recovery, his office said, and will both recover fully and resume his “very active lifestyle.” Bill, who could have suffered a heart attack had this gone untreated, had the heart surgery at the same place where he had quadruple bypass surgery in 2004. “This was not a result of either his lifestyle or his diet, which have been excellent,” Clinton’s cardiologist, Alan Schwartz, told reporters from the hospital steps. A few stents won’t slow a good former president down. Schwartz said putting in stents were just another step in an ongoing process: “Just as illnesses have natural histories, treatments have natural histories.” Clinton has been working at a grueling pace since the January 12 earthquake in Haiti, but says his demanding schedule did not contribute to heart problems. Clinton, the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, is overseeing the U.S. response with former president George W. Bush and has been there twice in recent weeks. Clinton was working on issues related to Haiti when he felt chest pains. As he was being wheeled into the operating room, he was still on a conference call. Pretty standard for this guy. Bill’s daughter, Chelsea , joined him at the hospital, an aide said, as did wife and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. President Barack Obama called Clinton yesterday evening and wished him “a speedy recovery,” a White House aide said. THG wishes Big Daddy the same.

Bill Clinton Hospitalized, Undergoes Heart Surgery

Former President Bill Clinton, who has a history of heart problems, was taken to a hospital today and underwent heart surgery there, according to reports. After he had chest pains, doctors inserted two stents into his native coronary. One bypass graft from Clinton’s operation five years ago became obstructed. Clinton is expected to recover and “continue to focus on the work of his foundation and Haiti’s relief and recovery efforts,” his office said in a statement. As United Nations special envoy to Haiti, Clinton has been concentrating in recent weeks on disaster relief there after an earthquake took 200,000 lives. The 63-year-old

Clinton received a procedure where two stents were placed in his coronary arteries, CNN reported. The surgery was described as routine, and having two items placed in his arteries was characterized as “not unusual,” a doctor told CNN. CNN correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta said the speed in which the procedure took place, however, was enough to classify the incident as an emergency. Six years ago, Clinton suffered from serious heart trouble. In 2004, he underwent surgery for a quadruple coronary artery bypass; several months later, complications arose, which led Clinton to go back to the hospital for a minor follow-up procedure. According to The New York Times, Clinton’s pains stemmed from a bypass graft previously operated on becoming obstructed. He was then rushed to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and is now recovering; his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is on her way to meet her husband, CNN reported. “President Clinton is in good spirits and will continue to focus on the work of his foundation and Haiti’s relief and long-term recovery efforts,” Douglas J. Band, his counselor, said in a statement released by the former president’s office, according to the Times. Before Clinton rose the political ranks to become president, it was well documented that he has a weakness for fried foods, stemming from his Southern upbringing in Arkansas. Clinton was a frequent jogger and lost a noticeable amount of weight during and after his presidency. He also changed his diet after his surgery six years ago. Clinton leads just as active a lifestyle following his presidency as he did when he occupied the White House. His Clinton Global Initiative has been instrumental in the fight against the global AIDS crisis. The former president is also a U.N. special envoy to Haiti and recently visited the ravaged country following the earthquake that struck the tiny island. Clinton appeared at MTV’s “Hope for Haiti Now” and BET’s “SOS Save Ourselves: Help for Haiti” telethons, urging viewers to continue aiding the survivors of the 7.1-magnitude quake.

New For DSM-V: White House Press Personality Disorder

Two days ago, NBC News White House correspondent Chuck Todd was whining to the Washington Post that Barack Obama doesn’t talk to the press enough. Yesterday, Obama talked to the press. Today, Todd whined about Obama talking to the press. The point has repeatedly been made that the men and women who cover the White House are a needy, preening, insecure, irrational, and emotionally unstable pack of professional stalkers whose confused feelings of adulation, jealousy, covetousness, and hatred for the man whose decisions and behavior govern the contours of their careers has corroded into an indecipherable slurry of rage and bottomless longing. But it bears repeating! The sheer clueless gall of the reporters, including Todd, who whined to the Post ‘s Howard Kurtz on Monday about Obama’s unavailability to the press was astonishing enough given the long and documented history of complaints as recently as six months ago that Obama was “overexposed.” But for Todd to wonder aloud today whether Obama erred in doing precisely what he demanded that Obama do just 48 hours ago has to be some sort of cry for help—a howl of pain from a troubled man in the grips of affliction that we’ll call White House Personality Disorder. Here’s Todd on Monday, complaining to Kurtz about being cut off from Obama’s inner thoughts and deepest desires: NBC White House reporter Chuck Todd calls the situation a “shame,” saying the administration is trying to control the message rather than allowing Obama to be seen “unscripted.” Here he was this morning, on his MSNBC show, complaining to former Clinton spokesman Joe Lockhart about Obama being too omnipresent: I’ll be honest—it felt like he didn’t have a lot of news to announce…. Is it good to put the president out on a day like that, when you don’t have a lot of news to announce? This rapidfire and profoundly irrational vacillation between spurned desire and outraged rejection is characteristic of White House Press Personality Disorder, a variant of borderline personality disorder unique to the hothouse environment of the D.C. press corps, where the intense pressures to both love and hate, protect and attack a single powerful father figure whom reporters are endlessly charged with thinking and talking about deforms fragile psyches every day. The National Institute of Mental Health’s analysis of borderline personality disorder can be transferred quite cleanly to its White House cousin: People with BPD often have highly unstable patterns of social relationships. While they can develop intense but stormy attachments, their attitudes towards family, friends, and loved ones may suddenly shift from idealization (great admiration and love) to devaluation (intense anger and dislike). Thus, they may form an immediate attachment and idealize the other person, but when a slight separation or conflict occurs, they switch unexpectedly to the other extreme and angrily accuse the other person of not caring for them at all. That sounds very familiar . The “Obama never talks to us” complaints came on the heels of a universal round of “Obama’s performance in from the of the Republicans was awesome” hallelujahs, which came on the heels of an unrelenting barrage of “Obama’s lost his mojo” analyses, which came on the heels of a round of “Obama’s State of the Union speech was a powerful performance” reports, and on and on in a ceaseless up-and-down series of “stormy attachments” and sudden “devaluations.” White House Press Personality Disorder is also characterized by obsessive nitpicking and a tendency to impute significance to objectively meaningless data, which can be seen in today’s Politico story discerning a troubling decline in the number of times the word “[LAUGHTER]” appears in transcripts of the White House press briefings : In the first six months of the Obama administration, briefings produced an average of 179 laughs per month. Over the past six months, the average has dropped down to 89. [snip] “There definitely aren’t a lot of laughs around the briefing room these days,” says Washington Examiner White House correspondent Julie Mason. “Robert’s little digs and evasions have lost their power to amuse – particularly since we haven’t had a presser since July.” The piece was published at 4 a.m. today—early bird WINS THE DAY!—so we can presume that Politico’s Patrick Gavin, who chronicled the death of laughter, interviewed Mason yesterday, which means that she uttered the words “particularly since we haven’t had a presser since July” on the day that Barack Obama held a presser . What’s unclear from Gavin’s account of the mirthless briefing room is whether the missing “[LAUGHTER]”s are due to Gibbs attempting fewer gags or getting fewer laughs for the gags he attempts. But whatever: We know that the briefings are now morose and somber affairs owing to Obama refusal to talk to the press except for yesterday. This is what these people make us think of:
