‘Descendants’ Wins Golden Globe For Best Drama

George Clooney also won a statuette for his performance in the Alexander Payne film. By Amy Wilkinson George Clooney in “The Descendants” Photo: 20th Century Fox No tissues were necessary for the cast and crew of weepy drama “The Descendants.” The Alexander Payne-written and -directed film took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama, beating out star George Clooney’s other film “The Ides of March,” along with “The Help,” “Hugo,” “Moneyball” and “War Horse.” “We had an extraordinary ensemble cast of young and older actors, veterans and newcomers, but our quarterback was George Clooney,” said producer Jim Burke during his acceptance speech. “Besides giving a career-best performance, in my mind, he was a generous actor who helped everyone do his best. So thank you very much, George. And if this movie becomes a timeless movie, which I feel like it will be to me, I feel like it’s because of our filmmaker and friend, Alexander Payne.” “The Descendants” received five noms from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, including Best Performance by an Actress (Shailene Woodley), Best Director (Alexander Payne), Best Screenplay (Nat Faxon, Alexander Payne and Jim Rash) and Best Performance by an Actor, which Clooney won . Clooney also paid tribute to Payne in his acceptance speech, saying, “Thank you very much to Alexander Payne, who makes wonderful films and is a great friend.” The flick, about a widowed land baron (Clooney) who’s forced to reconnect with his young daughters, has racked up plenty of awards-season buzz (and was among MTV’s top 10 films of 2011 ). The film earned seven nominations and won Best Actor for Clooney at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on January 12. The nods at tonight’s Golden Globes could be a harbinger for things to come, as the Academy Award nominations will be announced January 24. George Clooney Teases Brad Pitt ‘Death Match’ At Critics’ Choice Awards

‘Descendants’ star, who bested his buddy for Best Actor, also talks politics with MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Brad Pitt and George Clooney attend the 2012 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Photo: Getty Images It’s a pretty good week when you get the chance to talk to George Clooney once . But God bless awards season, because just a few days after catching up with the “Descendants” star on the New York red carpet at the National Board of Review, we snagged some time with him again Thursday (January 12) in Los Angeles at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards . As always, the guy was utterly charming. Can’t wait for the Golden Globes this Sunday! We can’t say the same for Clooney, who isn’t exactly impressed these days by all the awards-season hubbub. “The truth is, I think awards are always a very nice thing, in particular in helping films that are small continue to be made, because they are hard to get made,” he told MTV News. “There was a time when I was younger that the idea of them was intimidating and the idea of these kinds of shows was intimidating, and now it’s just fun, because I get to see people I like that I don’t get to see very often.” Of more interest for Clooney is the political horserace rather than the Hollywood one. “There’s been a pretty fun debate in the Republican Party ; I’ve enjoyed watching. I’m sad it’s coming to a close,” he admitted. “I’m a Democrat, so there are things that are fun about it. Listen, they’re going to find a guy, and it looks like it’s going to be Mitt Romney , and then away we go.” That’s a much more entertaining prospect than facing off against his Hollywood friends — guys like “Moneyball” star Brad Pitt, whom he’s been faux-battling all awards season. Clooney triumphed this time around, besting his pal for Best Actor at the CCMAs . “I’m sure there’s a death match,” he joked of the Clooney-vs.-Pitt hype in the media. “Look, he’s my buddy, so everything that happens that’s good for him makes me very happy.” Stick with MTV News all night for the 2012 Critics’ Choice Awards winners , and don’t miss all the fashion from the red carpet ! George Clooney Speaks on… Suicide?!?

George Clooney is an Oscar winner, a philanthropist and a bachelor with a new beautiful woman on his arm almost every year. Yet the actor tells the latest issue of Rolling Stone that life wasn’t always so perfect. Far from it, in fact. Referring to a spinal injury he suffered on the set of Syriana in 2005, Clooney said he was bedridden and “at a point where I thought, ‘I can’t exist like this. I can’t actually live.” Clooney added that the severe headaches and spinal fluid leaks through his nose were the most painful experiences he’s ever had. “I was lying in a hospital bed with an IV in my arm, unable to move, having these headaches where it feels like you’re having a stroke, and for a shirt three-week period, I started to think, ‘I may have to do something drastic about this’…but I never thought I’d get there. See, I was in a place where I was trying to figure out how to survive.” Fortunately, of course, the star did just that. He said drank heavily at the time, but surgery eventually helped with the spinal difficulties. He still suffers from bad headaches.

George Clooney’s Directing Inspires Ryan Gosling

‘That was one of the reasons I wanted to work with George,’ Gosling says of watching Clooney direct himself in ‘Ides of March.’ By Kevin Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Ryan Gosling Photo: MTV News The next step on Ryan Gosling’s climb to the top might take him behind the camera. In a recent interview with MTV News, Gosling talked about his aspirations to eventually direct, like his “Ides of March” co-star and director George Clooney. “I’d like to do that,” Gosling said. “That was one of the reasons I wanted to work with George, was to see how that’s done.” Even though Gosling may look up to Clooney as an actor/director, he isn’t ready to wear both hats simultaneously just yet. “I don’t think I could handle it as well as he does. He’s pretty incredible to watch,” Gosling said of Clooney directing himself in “Ides.” “He’s like Keanu Reeves in ‘The Matrix.’ Any problem that comes to him, he’s just dodging those bullets.” “The Ides of March” marks Clooney’s fourth feature film as director and his first time working with Gosling. While Gosling hasn’t directed yet, he does have some experience behind the scenes: He served as executive producer on last year’s critical darling “Blue Valentine.” Gosling recently found a new collaborator in Danish filmmaker and “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn. The duo are reuniting for Refn’s next film, “Only God Forgives,” and have two other films in development, including the much-delayed remake of “Logan’s Run.” Gosling’s work with Refn developing the tone and screenplay for “Drive” was often talked about in the press and could hint at future directing gigs. George Clooney Hates on Social Media

George Clooney is the anti- Kim Kardashian . He doesn’t star in a sex tape, he possesses true talent, he is involved in numerous charities, his personality is more engaging than that of a mannequin. Oh, and you’ll never find him on a social media network. “I don’t Tweet, I don’t go on Facebook,” Clooney says in the latest issue of Parade . “I think there’s too much information about all of us out there. I’m liking the idea of privacy more and more. There will be funny things, like I’ll read something I’ve said about a woman somewhere. And I haven’t spoken about my relationships in 15 years.” The Oscar winner also jokes about his latest film – or doesn’t joke, sadly – and why The Ides of March is relevant right now: “We were in preproduction on this film in 2007, before the Obama election. And then we realized that a good portion of the country was elated with what happened in that election, so we had to shelve the movie until people were cynical again. I didn’t think it would be quite this quick [Laughs].” Co-starring Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti and other big names, The Ides of March comes out on October 7.
