Papi Copy: Jay-Z Sues David Ortiz Over Club Name

Rapper and noted Yankee fan Jay-Z is suing Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz for opening a nightclub in his native Dominican Republic named “Forty-Forty.” Jay-Z thinks that’s a sample that’s too close to his line of “sports lounges” which carry the “40/40 Club” name … even if Big Papi is spelling out the digits. Jay-Z and business partner Juan Perez own 40/40 Clubs in New York City, Atlantic City and Las Vegas and have plans to open venues in Tokyo and Macau. They have accused Ortiz of “trading on the fame, value and goodwill of their name through his club Forty/Forty and its website, www.fortyforty.net.” Okay, but would he sue Alex Rodriguez for the same thing? Just asking. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK : If you can’t beat ’em, sue ’em! Wait, the Yankees won the World Series last year. Never mind. That’s just adding insult to injury then . The lawsuit also notes that “David Ortiz is fully aware of plaintiff’s Manhattan 40/40 Club, since he had been a patron there on several occasions.” Jay-Z named his club “40/40” because in baseball, that refers to a 40-home run, 40-steal season, or “as exclusive as it gets.” Cool name for a club. An odd choice for Ortiz to rip off, though, as he is one of the slowest land mammals to ever roam this planet, having recorded just 10 thefts career. Make he just likes the food (clearly his waist line would corroborate that)… or he means 40 injections in 40 days, or some better steroid reference.

Lloyd Banks Influenced By Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake On Next Album

‘A lot of people don’t know I write more than rap music,’ MC says. By Shaheem Reid Lloyd Banks Photo: MTV News Lloyd Banks may be joining the recent ranks of Jay-Z ( The Blueprint 3 ) Raekwon The Chef ( Only Built 4 Cuban Linx … Pt. 2 ) and Capone-N-Noreaga ( The War Report 2 ) by making his album a sequel — The Hunger For More 2. Banks posted the title on his Twitter page, although the tweet has since been deleted and the G-Unit said the title is not official. Still, fans are encouraged that Banks is thinking about taking it back to his best effort. In a recent chat with Mixtape Daily , Banks said that going overseas on tour with the G-Unit for two months would be “dangerous” because he was going to devote his free time in the hotel room tp writing his LP. “It’s gonna be dangerous for me, because I’m gonna come home and record anywhere between 40 and 50 records, literally,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll have the bulk of my album from that.” The youngest member of the Unit also said that his sound would be expanding past the gritty beats you hear on his mixtape. Banks wants to add hit records to the mix after hearing what his former Interscope labelmates like Will.I.Am and Timabaland brought to the table. “The music overseas, the party atmospheres — it’s incredible,” Banks offered. “Don’t get me wrong, I love the club scenes in New York city and the States, [but] when you go overseas, you might hear ‘Toniiight’s gonna be a good night.’ You’re hearing that in the club 10 times. So if you didn’t know that joint, I come back over here like, ‘You don’t know that record. You’re buggin’ — that’s poppin!’ That record, Justin Timberlake, Timberland, Lady Gaga — you’re hearing so many different records, it makes you want to expand as an artist and get records that’s enjoyed by all people. They’re definitely gonna hear those kind of records from me too. “A lot of people don’t know I write more than rap music,” he continued. “I can write R&B records. I can write hit records — just put it like that. Hopefully I’ll be writing for a few more people in the future.” Lamborghini Lloyd also says that he would possibly put the call into Will.I.Am for beats. “I chopped it up with him a couple of times,” Banks said. “I seen him in L.A. and he wanted to work on the tail end of Rotten Apple. But between me touring, it was crazy. I didn’t get a chance to hook up with him. But hopefully we can make something happen on this record.” Related Artists Lloyd Banks

Key Ben Roethlisberger Security Tape Vanishes

Did Big Ben just evade a key legal tackle? Security camera footage from the night Pittsburgh Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger is accused of sexually assaulting a Georgia college girl is mysteriously gone. The disappearance of security footage at Capital City nightclub was reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune Review , which claims parts of the tape have been erased . A lawyer for the club produced this explanation: “The DVD system overwrote itself … Had it just been deleted, they might have been able to save some of it.” That contradicts what owner Rocky Duncan said in the wake of the alleged incident, not only claiming he had video, but describing the footage in great detail. Duncan said that footage showed the 20-year-old Ben Roethlisberger accuser hanging out before the alleged incident and police speaking with Ben afterward. Duncan was quick to point out, however, that the video did not show Ben and his accuser going towards the bathroom where the alleged incident took place. The lawyer for the club later said cops watched the video with Rocky “shortly” after the alleged incident, but they did not take the video with them at that time. When police returned to collect the tape at a later point, that’s when they noticed the footage had been erased. This whole thing is as confusing as it is shady. No charges have been filed against Ben in this case or the previous one in which he was accused of sexually assaulting a Nevada woman, Andrea McNulty.

Rapper J-Kwon Missing, Label Says

‘If anyone has seen J-Kwon or has access to him, please let him know,’ label says in statement. By Shaheem Reid J-Kwon Photo: Vince Bucci/Getty Images St. Louis native, J-Kwon , who made a huge splash in 2004 with the hit “Tipsy,” has been missing for almost a month, his label says. Gracie Production released a statement Tuesday night asking for help finding the MC. “J-Kwon is a big part of the Gracie family, and we are obviously increasingly worried and want to make sure he is OK,” Gracie Productions CEO/President Tony Bucher said in the statement. “We’ve already received thousands of e-mails from fans and supporters who are worried about J-Kwon, and we want everyone to know how much we appreciate the love and support. If anyone has seen J-Kwon or has access to him, please let him know we are worried about him, and to please let us know everything is ok.” Bucher and Gracie productions have also gone as far as setting up a Twitter page @WhereIsJKwon so fans can write with any info they may have. According to a rep for Gracie Productions, Kwon was working on a self titled album to be released on March 23. Last year, via the indie, the 24-year-old rapper put out the albums Hood Hop 2 and Hood Hop 2.5. J-Kwon’s biggest project was the original Hood Hop, which came out in 2004. Powered by the party anthem “Tipsy,” the then 17 year-old gained national exposure and even performed on “Saturday Night Live.” “I’m 17, so I can’t get into the club,” he explained to MTV News in 2004 about the controversial song. “I used to stand outside and see people so tipsy, so drunk, they basically did like a two-step away from the club. I took all that and was like, ‘OK, what does every teen think?’ When I say, ‘Teen drinking is very bad, but I got a fake ID though,’ people think I’m actually promoting drinking to teens. Nah. When I say, ‘Everybody in the club getting tipsy,’ I mean we ain’t drinking but everybody else is. That’s what we see, not what we do. A lot of critics come at me about this. If I was promoting teen drinking, believe me, I would’ve sold the song for an ad.” Kwon had a hard knock life to begin with. He was kicked out of the house at age 12 and became homeless. In 2003, he auditioned for LA Reid and Jermaine Dupri, who were at the Arista at the time. “When I went in for the deal I was like, ‘What if they don’t sign me? Forget them. If they don’t sign me, I’mma keep rolling.’ That’s how I approach every situation,” he told MTV News. “So I’m rapping for LA and at the end of the verse, my line was something like, ‘You don’t like it, LA, bite me,’ and I turned around and mooned him, straight up.” Hood Hop was the only J-Kwon album released under the So So Def imprint before the rapper and the label parted ways years later.
