Arrest this man already! Mike Brown Shooting Audio Authenticated An audio recording that many doubted was real, has been verified. As previously reported an unidentified man unknowingly may have captured the moment Officer Darren Wilson shot and killed Mike Brown. The Washington Post reports: The video texting service Glide has verified the recording played by CNN this week of the purported shots in the Ferguson, Mo., killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown. In an e-mail to the Erik Wemple Blog, Glide head of communications Chaim Haas reports: Because Glide is the only messaging application using streaming video technology, each message is simultaneously recorded and transmitted, so the exact time can be verified to the second. In this case, the video in question was created at 12:02:14 PM CDT on Saturday, August 9th. Glide has also posted a note on its Web site. In a brief chat with the Erik Wemple Blog, Haas said, “The question we are being asked is is this authentic and the answer is absolutely.” Notification to the FBI, said Haas, “is taking place.” The news is big news for CNN, which subjected itself to some doubts about the integrity of the recording. It surfaced the tape on Monday night without having authenticated it. Haas confirms that, even though the service has verified the creation of the tape, that doesn’t mean that the sounds in the background are conclusively those of the Brown shooting. National Guard Member Used Racial Slur Talking To CNN Producer “Never Know What Ferguson N-Words Will Do Via Rawstory reports: CNN host Don Lemon, who has spent recent days reporting from Ferguson, recalled on Tuesday that a member of the National Guard had called protesters the n-word. During a CNN town hall event about the racial divide in the U.S., an African-American member of the audience asked what safeguards could be put in place to prevent officers from overreacting when dealing with black men. The Black Sphere’s Kevin Jackson noted that putting body cameras on officers changed the dynamic in police stops. “If there’s a camera, he knows he’s got to check himself,” Jackson explained. “And if you know an officer has a camera, you also have to check yourself.” Lemon pointed out that body cameras could also make a certain “type of person” think twice before going into law enforcement in the first place. “I’m just going to be honest with you,” Lemon recalled. “Last night, one of my producers said that they — I won’t say if it’s a he or a she because I don’t want to give anyone a way — said that they came in contact with one of the members of the National Guard. And that they said, ‘You want to get out of here because you’re white. Because these n-words, you know, you never know what they’re going to do.’” “True story. This is jacked up on so many levels… Body Of US Woman Found In Suitcase On Bali Resort, Victim’s Daughter & Boyfriend Arrested The body of an American woman who was beaten to death was discovered inside a suitcase abandoned in an Indonesian taxi and it looks like her 18-year-old daughter and the daughter’s boyfriend may be responsible. According to CNN reports: An 18-year-old American woman and her boyfriend have been arrested in connection with the killing of the woman’s mother, whose body was found inside a suitcase at a luxury hotel in Bali, CNN affiliate Trans TV reported Wednesday. Sheila von Weise Mack, 62, was found beaten to death and stuffed in a suitcase at the prestigious St. Regis Bali Resort on Tuesday, Djoko Hariutomo, the police chief of Denpasar, the capital of Bali, told the broadcaster. Her daughter, Heather Mack, and the daughter’s 21-year-old boyfriend, Peter Schaefer, were later found by police sleeping in a hotel room in Kuta, according to Trans TV. Kuta is a town about 10 kilometers (6 miles) away from the St. Regis. Police said that the couple told them that they had been taken captive at the resort Tuesday by an armed gang whose members killed Sheila, but that they later managed to escape, Trans TV reported. However, hotel workers and the taxi driver who turned in the body to police gave a different version of events. The taxi driver told police that Heather Mack and Schaefer hailed him at the St. Regis, placing one bag in the trunk and two more in the back seat, according to Trans TV. They then reportedly went back in to the hotel and did not return. After two hours went by, the taxi driver said he entered the hotel and spoke to employees, who went to the family’s rooms and found them empty. When the taxi driver and a manager opened the trunk, they saw blood on the luggage and drove the car to a police station, where the woman’s body was found inside a hard-sided grey piece of luggage, Trans TV reported. Police told the broadcaster that the woman was from Minnesota, according to her documents. But CNN could not immediately confirm her place of residence. The St. Regis is one of the most upmarket hotels on Bali, a popular tourist destination. Room rates at the resort start at $470 a night, according to its website. So messed up. What constitutes an “Uncle Tom” in today’s society? Is There Such A Thing As “Acting White?” Is there a way to be “authentically Black?” What behaviors, language cues, social skills, or cultural knowledge make a person truly Black? Peep this opinion piece from conservative blogger Crystal Wright. Via CNN : There’s no “authentic” way to be black, President Barack Obama told a group. For once, I agree with the President. Speaking at a town hall event this week about his “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative, the President gave blacks permission to be individuals, rejecting the idiotic notion that speaking proper English and being successful in life is “acting white.” As if any person of any race with two grains of sense would think this is logical. During the event, Obama was asked by a young Native American man, “How is the United States government helping American Indian people revitalize their language and culture?” Obama responded: “What’s great about America is the way that we all take these different cultures and we make one culture out of it.” Obama said that it is important for Americans to know their roots and where they come from, but not be held hostage by our cultures from advancing in life. Then, Obama got real. He talked about how black Americans use this “group think” psychology to bully other blacks, keep them from expressing themselves as individuals and stop them from assimilating into the broader culture of America. “Sometimes African-Americans, in communities where I’ve worked, there’s been the notion of ‘acting white’ — which sometimes is overstated,” he told the group. “But there’s an element of truth to it, where, OK, if boys are reading too much, then, well, why are you doing that? Or why are you speaking so properly? And the notion that there’s some authentic way of being black, that if you’re going to be black you have to act a certain way and wear a certain kind of clothes, that has to go. There are many different ways for African-American men to be authentic.” He went on to use his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, as an example. “If you look at Michelle, she grew up South Side. And her mom still lives in a neighborhood where gunshots go off, and it can be rough where Michelle grew up. But she’ll talk proper when she needs to. Now, you also don’t want to get on her wrong side, because she can translate that into a different vernacular. But my point is, is that you don’t have to act a certain way to be authentic.” I rolled my eyes in disgust, remembering all the times in my life that phrase has been hurled at me from other blacks. Growing up, I wasn’t raised in a home where we “talked or acted black” — speaking broken English, neck jerking and behaving like the black stereotypes we see in some of the Tyler Perry movies. So, I was shocked to encounter such nonsense when I attended Georgetown University as an undergraduate. Most of the black students — who generally all hung out in the same pack, eating, studying and socializing exclusively together — informed me I was an “Uncle Tom,” not really black because I chose to have an integrated experience at Georgetown. One of the biggest sins I committed was refusing to eat at the all-black cafeteria tables in the various dorms. I would wonder, if you only want to socialize with black students, then why not just attend a predominantly black college? My freshman year, I went to a dance with a white guy from my class. When he came by my dorm room to pick me up, two black girls from across the hall stared and snickered, uttering something along the lines that I wanted to be white so bad. Really? The next day the same girls heckled me again about my date. Tired of dealing with their stupidity, I walked over and told them I would continue to do whatever I wanted. Instead of being so concerned with my life and who I was dating, they should be concerned with their own. I have never been counseled on how to act black. And I never will. Hmm…what do you think of what the author is saying? We’d agree that there’s no right way to be a Black person, but her language regarding broken English, Tyler Perry characters, and her conscious choice to avoid other Blacks makes it seem like she herself has a rather narrow view of what “traditional Blackness” is and purposely aims to be the opposite. We seriously doubt that her Black peers at Georgetown behaved like neck-jerking stereotypes… What do you think? Does “acting White” exist?
