Leaders, Stars Pay Tribute to Elizabeth Edwards

Political leaders and Hollywood celebrities alike are paying tribute after the death of Elizabeth Edwards , who lost a six-year battle with cancer Tuesday. The lawyer, author and mother of three was just 61. Having separated from John Edwards after three decades of marriage and following his affair with Rielle Hunter , her passing is even more poignant. Elizabeth Edwards (1949-2010) . The President of the United States, Barack Obama, said the following: “Michelle and I were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Elizabeth Edwards. This afternoon I spoke to Cate Edwards and John Edwards, and offered our family’s condolences.” “I came to know and admire Elizabeth over the course of the presidential campaign. She was a tenacious advocate for fixing our health care system and fighting poverty, and our country has benefited from the voice she gave to the cause of building a society that lifts up all those left behind.” “In her life, Elizabeth Edwards knew tragedy and pain. Many others would have turned inward; many others in the face of such adversity would have given up.” “But through all that she endured, Elizabeth revealed a kind of fortitude and grace that will long remain a source of inspiration. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.” He wasn’t the only chief executive to express his condolences. “With the passing of Elizabeth Edwards, America lost a symbol of strength, hope, and humanity, a tireless advocate for health care for all Americans, and determined crusader for cancer cures,” former President Bill Clinton said in a statement. “Her children have lost a loving mother, her friends a wise counselor. My prayers are with them. She was a remarkable woman who dealt with the challenges her life dealt her with courage and grace.” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also expressed her condolences: “America has lost a passionate advocate for building a more humane and just society, for reforming our health-care system, and for finding a cure for cancer once and for all.” “But the Edwards family and her legion of friends have lost so much more — a loving mother, constant guardian, and wise counselor. Our thoughts are with the Edwards family at this time, and with all those people across the country who met Elizabeth over the years and found an instant friend — someone who shared their experiences and offered empathy, understanding and hope.” Vice President Joe Biden said that “Elizabeth Edwards fought a brave battle against a terrible, ravaging disease that takes too many lives every day. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, and to those who felt they knew her.” Edwards’ death also resonated on Twitter. Just a few Tweets from stars: Former Alaskan governor Sarah Palin: “Very sorry for Elizabeth Edwards’ family. May God comfort her kids, especially, through this tough time. God bless her family & loved ones.” Former reality star Dina Manzo: “Another wonderful life taken by this horrific disease…RIP Elizabeth Edwards” Bravo’s Andy Cohen: “RIP Elizabeth Edwards. Gary Johnson Admits To Medical Marijuana Use.

(CNN) – Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson hasn't been shy about smoking marijuana in the past, but a new interview reveals that this past may not be so distant. In an interview with The Weekly Standard released Monday, Johnson admits that he smoked marijuana recently for medicinal purposes. Johnson is an avid supporter of the legalization of marijuana and the revelation that it's a part of his past isn't a new one. When asked if he ever smoked marijuana, he referenced Bill Clinton circa 1992 to The New Republic in November, saying “I never exhaled.” But The Weekly Standard prompted a response from Johnson that puts his use of marijuana within the last two years: “It's not anything I volunteer, but you're the only person that actually asked about it,” he said, “But for luck, I guess, I wasn't arrested.” Johnson, a libertarian who governed New Mexico from 1995 to 2003, suffered pain resulting from a paragliding accident in 2005. “Rather than using painkillers, which I have used on occasion before, I did smoke pot, as a result of having broken my back, blowing out both of my knees, breaking ribs, really taking about three years to recover,” he admitted. Since past use of painkillers caused unpleasant side effects as well as difficult withdrawals, Johnson told The Weekly Standard that “someone” who cared for him gave him marijuana to deal with the pain, divulging that he used it from 2005-2008. Gov. Gary Johnson is an atypical Republican who suggests cutting the defense budget by as much as 90 percent, stating that Iran's nuclear program isn't a threat to the U.S., and favoring abortion in most cases. He hasn't spelled it out his future intentions in so many words, and his political advocacy organization Our America Initiative, is a small obstacle to overcome, due to its tax status and ability to receive unlimited donations from both individuals and corporations. Still, he's the only rumored 2012 presidential candidate with an outspoken history of advocating for the legalization of marijuana, another fact that sets him apart from the rest of the GOP presidential pack of contenders. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/12/06/new-details-of-johnsons-pot-smok… added by: ThatCrazyLibertarian

Befuddled Bill Press Wants to Go Back to the Clinton Era Tax Cuts That Were Actually Tax Increases

Bill Press appeared on Fox News' Geraldo At Large, on Sunday night, as part of a discussion about whether the Bush era tax cuts would be extended and the former CNN host couldn't get his story straight as he recommended that Congress go back to the Bill Clinton era “tax cuts.” In fact Clinton, back in 1993, passed the largest tax increase in history but this bit of truth

Bill Maher calls Obama Wimpy and Wussy!

Bill Maher expressed disappointment and frustration with President Obama on CNN's “Fareed Zakaria GPS” on Sunday. The president, he said, has been too timid in pursuing the Democratic agenda. “I thought, when we elected the first black president, as a comedian, I thought two years in, I'd be making jokes about what a gangsta he was, you know?” Maher said. Instead, Maher said we've got “President Wayne Brady.” “For him to be talking about compromising with the Republicans on the Bush tax cuts, where — where are they going to draw a line in the sand? When are they going to remember who they are?” “I'm so disappointed.,” Maher said. “And I still like him and still think there's hope he could get it yet, but I'm so disappointed that he just seems to be another in a long line of Democrats that come across as wimpy and wussy … and of not standing up for what they believe in enough.” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/05/bill-maher-obama-cnn_n_792223.html added by: congoboy

‘An Absolute Disgrace’: CNN’s Parker Spitzer Finds Blast of Dissent Against Tax-Evading Rangel

While the “objective” network newscasts strenuously sought to hornswoggle the public into thinking everyone in Washington was sympathetic to unethical tax-evading liberal Rep. Charlie Rangel getting censured on the House floor for 45 seconds, CNN's Parker Spitzer asked about Rangel on Thursday night and received a dissenting blast from sports journalist Stephen A. Smith, who called him an “absolute disgrace” and said “I'm done with him.” Former Air America host Sam Seder, so enraged by the corruption of the Bushies, was just as partisan in insisting Rangel didn't commit a crime and shouldn't receive a censure and was “open with the committee.” Eliot Spitzer didn't want to dwell too long on the ethical-politician subject: SPITZER: All right, guys. Does he persuade you? Should Charlie be shown the exit or has Charlie persuaded you he deserves to continue on fighting for central Harlem? SMITH: Well, I'm not going to sit there and say he deserves to be shown the exit, but he certainly hasn't convinced me. I think it's an absolute disgrace that he, of all people, conducted himself in this fashion. read more
