‘Dancing With The Stars’ Cast Most A-List Ever? Experts Weigh In!

Huge ratings and big stars like the Situation have made ‘DWTS’ a ‘go-to TV show,’ says one pop-culture expert. By Jocelyn Vena “Dancing with the Stars” cast Photo: ABC With names as recognizable as the Situation, David Hasselhoff, Audrina Patridge, Michael Bolton and “Brady Brunch” vet Florence Henderson, the 11th season of “Dancing With the Stars” is shaping up to be one of the most pop-culturally relevant in the show’s five-year history. And experts contend that the show, which premiered on Monday night, now has enough clout to book not only celebrities with a legitimate footnote in pop-culture history but also stars at the peak of their careers. “Well, I think it’s just the nature of the beast, both the show and reality TV in general, that they are bigger now than they were when ‘Dancing With the Stars’ started,” said TVGuide.com staff editor Joyce Eng, explaining why this season packs so much star power. “Two of [the contestants] are reality stars. I don’t think it’s that surprising for them to do another reality show, especially for the Sitch, capitalizing on his fame now.” David Caplan, an entertainment journalist who has worked at celebrity magazines including People and Star, had another explanation, saying that the show has gone beyond camp value and is now considered by many to be legitimate work. ” ‘Dancing With the Stars’ has established itself as a go-to TV show,” he said. “It has incredible ratings, and by doing this show it allows a lot of people to expand their platform. You go on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ and you generate so much more press. For instance, some celebrity weekly will do a ‘How Bristol Palin Got in Shape’ story.” So how did it happen? Well, Caplan said, each new season added to a snowball effect. “It started off small,” he added, “and then progressed each season as more relevant people realized, ‘This is good for my career.’ ” Eng added, “As for other big names [besides Audrina and the Situation], the show has pursued certain people for years, and I think it’s entirely possible that some stars were skeptical, tentative about signing on in the earlier seasons,” she said. “But now that the show has blown up or friends/ old co-stars have gone on [ cough ] the Hoff [ cough ], ‘90210’ people, they’ve joined.” Brad Witter, a reporter at US Weekly, noted that season 11’s contestants have the celebrity factor that makes them appealing to viewers — and the tabloids. “In the past, ‘Dancing With the Stars’ got the reputation that it’s for washed-up people, but as the seasons have gone on, it’s gotten more popular, and the ratings are huge,” Witter explained. “A lot of people that are on this season are people that have been in the spotlight up until now and are still running in our magazine. This season, it’s people that America already cares about and are invested in.” What did you think of the “DWTS” premiere episode? Tell us in the comments! ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Repeal Stalled By Senate Vote

Despite Lady Gaga support, bill fails to pass. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Chris Hondros/ Getty Images Despite a last-minute push at a Monday rally in Maine and weeks of very public advocacy from Lady Gaga in favor of repealing the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy barring gay and lesbian soldiers from openly serving in the armed forces, Senate Democrats were unable to get enough votes to begin debate Tuesday (September 21). Gaga rushed to Maine on Monday in an attempt to convince the state’s two swing-vote Republican senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, to support repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” But when the vote came to the floor Tuesday to begin debate on the massive defense spending bill, which includes a repeal of the policy, the Democratic majority fell short of the 60 votes needed to bring the bill to debate, losing out 56-43. The organization Gaga worked with to spearhead her two-week campaign to get the discussion started, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, issued a statement following the vote. “Today’s Senate vote was a frustrating blow to repeal this horrible law,” said Army veteran Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of SLDN, a national organization dedicated to ending “don’t ask, don’t tell.” “We lost because of the political maneuvering dictated by the mid-term elections. Let’s be clear: Opponents to repealing ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ did not have the votes to strike those provisions from the bill. Instead, they had the votes for delay. Time is the enemy here.” The vote was done in thanks to a filibuster by Republican Senator and Vietnam veteran John McCain, who attempted to block the vote to begin debate on the National Defense Authorization Act over Republican claims that the Democrats were attempting to stifle debate on the bill and not allow the minority party to offer amendments to the massive spending package for the military. President Obama has long promised a repeal of the Clinton-era legislation, and the House has already passed a version of the spending bill that included the reversal of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” But with the measure stalled in the Senate, hopes of passage have faded significantly. With the midterm elections less than six weeks away and Republicans expected to make gains in both the House and Senate, possibly even taking over leadership of one or both bodies, supporters of repeal were looking at Tuesday’s vote as their last, best chance for passage this year. “We now have no choice but to look to the lame duck session where we’ll have a slim shot,” Sarvis said of the already-packed legislative session following the November midterm elections. “The Senate absolutely must schedule a vote in December when cooler heads and common sense are more likely to prevail once mid-term elections are behind us.” Gaga’s very public efforts helped put the issue on front pages and screens from coast to coast, but CNN reported that both Collins and Snowe said the singer’s appearance at Monday’s rally in Maine had no effect on their crucial votes. Collins, in fact, supported the repeal but told the network she felt she had to stay in line with her colleagues and vote against debate for procedural reasons. CNN’s American Morning, Fixated on O’Donnell Charges, Played Down Biden’s Fine

At CNN, it’s all Christine O’Donnell all the time.  News readers there seemingly can’t get their fill of Delaware’s Republican senatorial candidate. Today, the American Morning program covered in each of its three hours allegations from a Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaint that O’Donnell misused some campaign funds.  Yet when Vice President Joe Biden was fined $219,000 in July for actual FEC infractions, not allegations, American Morning didn’t devote anywhere near as much air time to the story. At 6:00 AM (ET), co-anchor John Roberts kicked off American morning with: “Checks and balances. Questions for the suddenly silent rising star of the Tea Party.  Where does Christine O’Donnell get her money? Is she using campaign cash as her personal credit card?”  Co-anchor Kiran Chetry chimed in with, “We’re going to have a lot more on Christine O’Donnell in just a few minutes.”  And they did, playing a clip of CNN national correspondent Gary Tuchman telling O’Donnell she didn’t answer his question as well as part of an interview with a woman representing the organization lodging the complaint.  Roberts noted that group claims O’Donnell is “clearly a criminal and should be prosecuted because of this spending.” After thanking viewers for watching and mentioning the transition from summer to fall, the 7:00 AM segment began: CHETRY: I’m Kiran Chetry. We have a lot to talk about this morning. We’re looking for answers from the tea party candidate for Senate in Delaware. Christine O’Donnell’s past spending raising some legal and ethical questions. We’re going to show you what the complaints are about, who’s behind them, and how she responded last night at a Delaware campaign forum. By the 8:00 AM segment, the team showed some self-restraint, waiting until about midway before: CHETRY: And Delaware GOP nominee Christine O’Donnell is denying she misused money from her last Senate run. She did though shy away from statistics when our Gary Tuchman caught up with her at a campaign forum last night. They then went to a video, afterwards noting that the “O’Donnell campaign has not responded to our phone calls this morning.” On July 19, the American Morning program reported on another story about the FEC looking into allegations of improprities.  It’s entire coverage: CHETRY: Well, his presidential bid failed. Now, Joe Biden will have to pay a $219,000 fine for violating campaign spending rules. The Federal Election Commission says Biden’s 2008 campaign accepted contributions above the legal limit. A Biden spokesman says that the ruling is, quote, “commonplace” and that a repayment check to the Treasury Department will be in the mail. And that, in total, was American Morning’s coverage that day of Biden’s $219,000 fine. The O’Donnell overkill must be obvious to even the Flavor Aid drinkers of the mainstream media.  Still, they just can’t get enough.  Even if it ultimately backfires as I think it may.

Eight Dems Arrested in Bell, CA ‘Corruption on Steroids’ – Not a Single Mention of Party Affiliation From Media

Today, eight city council members were arrested in Bell, California for what Los Angeles County District Attorney labeled “corruption on steroids.” Thus far, every major news outlet that has reported on the story has omitted the fact that all eight individuals arrested are Democrats. These glaring omissions come only weeks after NewsBusters reported that of the 351 stories on the then-brewing controversy, 350 had omitted party affiliations, and one had mentioned they were Democrats only in apologizing for not doing so sooner. Reports today from ABC , CBS , the Los Angeles Times , the Associated Press , Bloomberg , USA Today , CNN , MSNBC , NPR , and the San Francisco Chronicle all reported on the arrests without mentioning party affiliations. One commenter at CNN’s online story got it spot on: “I notice there is no mention of the party affiliation of the accused. I can find no mention of it in any story on the internet. This must mean they were all Democrats.” Give the man a cigar. Together, the eight city officials “misappropriated” $5.5 million in municipal funds. Robert Rizzo, the chief culprit, was arrested on 53 counts of various brands of corruption. Before the scandal came to light, Rizzo had been making roughly $1.5 million per year, even though the per capita income in Bell is roughly half the national average. Pedro Carillo, Bell’s interim city manager, released a statement on the arrests today: Given the sheer volume of charges levied against former Bell Chief Administrative Officer Robert Rizzo and former Assistant CAO Angela Spaccia by the district attorney, it is clear that Rizzo and Spaccia were at the root of the cancer that has afflicted the City of Bell. Also, it is a sad day for Bell that four current and two former members of the council also have been arrested. I am prepared to double down our efforts to continue to restore order, establish good government reforms, and to ensure that Bell is providing needed services to its residents. Despite arrests in one of the most massive cases of municipal corruption in recent memory, no media outlet could bring itself to mention the officials’ party affiliations, a fact that has been widely reported since the scandal entered the national spotlight.

Tina Brown: Glenn Beck Is ‘The White Malcolm X…It’s White Racial Politics’

Tina Brown, the founder and editor of the online publication the “Daily Beast,” said Sunday that conservative talk show host Glenn Beck “has become sort of the white Malcolm X.” Chatting with Howard Kurtz on CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” Brown said of Beck, “I think that he’s a fascinating demagogue, actually.” She continued, “It’s white racial politics, in a sense, because he’s really saying — a lot of his message is, you know, that Obama is a racist.”  And continued, “[Beck] talks about God, but when you drill down to what he’s actually saying, he calls [Obama] a Nazi and socialist who’s taking over the country. I mean, his language is extremely inflammatory” (video follows with transcript and commentary):  HOWARD KURTZ, HOST: On this same topic, Glenn Beck has become an influential and certainly divisive figure after that Lincoln Memorial rally, that huge rally. Do you see him as something of a cultural phenomenon? What’s your take? TINA BROWN, CO-FOUNDER, “THE DAILY BEAST: Well, I do. I think that he’s a fascinating demagogue, actually. He really is a demagogue. And he has become sort of the white Malcolm X in a strange way. I mean, the way he goes out there with this kind of very — he’s very much kind of — it’s white racial politics, in a sense, because he’s really saying — a lot of his message is, you know, that Obama is a racist. You know, I mean, all the stuff that we keep hearing about “Hussein Obama” and the references to Obama being undoubtedly kind of racist, really, in all the terminology. KURTZ: He’s backed off that a little bit, and now he seems to be talking a lot about God and America — BROWN: Yes, he talks about God, but when you drill down to what he’s actually saying, he calls him a Nazi and socialist who’s taking over the country. I mean, his language is extremely inflammatory. And he likes to play it now revivalists, religious bring it together. But he’s playing a double game, because actually he’s a hypocrite. And he’s a Tea Party hypocrite. He’s preaching one thing and he’s actually being another. Notice how Kurtz laughed when Brown called Beck a hypocrite and a Tea Party hypocrite.  Not very professional, Howie.   As for Brown, given her absurd comments, you wonder if she’s actually ever spent any time listening to Beck or if she’s relied on far-left leaning websites and MSNBC to form her opinion. I opt for the latter – how ’bout you?

Lady Gaga Judges No One…Except the U.S. Military

Is there no end to the many talents of Lady Gaga, already recognized as the greatest Madonna impersonator of this century? Of course we all know her as a singer, musician, fashionista and female impersonator, but recently she has revealed herself as maven in two new areas: military expert and political advisor. It started at the MTV Video Music Awards. That is ironic in itself since I think that MTV stopped being a music channel sometime in the 1990’s. Ms. Gaga, (I don’t know if “Lady” is a title or simply the first part of her pseudonym) appeared in a costume made of meat. When asked the meaning of her get-up by Ellen DeGeneres, she explained it wasn’t a slam on vegans.   “As you know, I am the most judgment-free human being on the earth,” Gaga replied.   Wow! Did the irony of that statement knock anyone else down into their La-Z-Boy? That might be the truest thing she has ever said. It wasn’t too long ago that having judgment skills was considered a plus. Not anymore! Be that as it may, the whole idea was to call attention to the plight of gay folks in the military. If you don’t see the linkage between “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” narcissistic self- indulgence and wearing a Porterhouse, come on over and sit on the terminally un-hip bench with me while I try to figure it out.  Ms. Gaga went on to explain that her being accompanied by some disgruntled former employees of the military was a political protest: “For me this evening, if we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights pretty soon, we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on own bones. And, I am not a piece of meat.” I am not really sure what that means, either. I am a fairly hefty guy and I have a lot of meat on my bones. So are my rights safe? Perhaps Ms. Gaga is trying to tell us that DADT is somehow linked to anorexia in the fashion industry. Ahhh, now it’s all starting to come together. She went on to say: “It is a devastation to me that I know my fans who are gay . . . feel like they have government oppression on them.” Not that there “is” government oppression but that they “feel” there is oppression. Later she “tweeted” to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and the Senator was smitten with Lady Gaga. They tweeted back and forth for days! That is, if you think they do their own “tweeting.” I believe that both have people who do this job for them and the job title is “Twit.”  There is probably a Head Twit and several Assistant Twits. I imagine Lady Gaga and Harry Reid are surrounded by Twits. Perhaps he is just looking for his next gig when he finds himself unemployed in November. Crossposted at Big Hollywood

Helen Thomas to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award from Council on American-Islamic Relations

Disgraced former White House correspondent Helen Thomas will be receiving a lifetime achievement award next month from the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Coming roughly three months after Thomas was forced to resign from Hearst Newspapers for disgustingly telling Israeli Jews to move back to Germany and Poland and “get the hell out of Palestine,” this is clearly going to raise a lot of eyebrows especially with all the media’s recent hyperventilation over so-called Islamophobia. Consider how the following report from The Hill is going to play in an environment where the press are accusing Americans of being anti-Muslim (h/t Hot Air headlines ): The longtime White House correspondent who resigned from Hearst newspapers in June in the wake of comments she made about Israel will receive a lifetime achievement award from the Council on American-Islamic Relations. CAIR is honoring Helen Thomas, who is of Lebanese descent and now 90 years old, at its  Leadership Conference and 16th Annual Fundraising Banquet  on Oct. 9 in Arlington, Va. Speakers will also include Oxford Islamic studies scholar Tariq Ramadan.  What does this tell us about CAIR’s sensitivities concerning the current debate over supposed anti-Muslim sentiment in this country, especially with the announcement coming while America is involved in hopefully fruitful peace negotiations with Israel and the Palestinians? After all, this Islamic organization is giving a lifetime achievement award to a woman with a history of anti-Semitic remarks who was just months ago forced to resign for doing so. Do they know what this says to Jews and supporters of Israel in this country? Doesn’t it give the appearance that all you have to do as a journalist in America is bash Jews and Israel and you’ll be given an award from our nation’s leading pro-Islamic organization? This certainly doesn’t seem to be the message you’d like to be sending while America tries to negotiate peace in the Middle East and struggles with religious tensions within its own borders. As for Thomas and all of her former employers as well as supporters, we hope you’re proud of yourselves.

Fmr MSNBC Analyst Crawford: Media ‘Playing into Dem Message’ That Tea Party Candidates Are ‘Insane’

Appearing as a guest on Sunday’s Reliable Sources on CNN, the Congressional Quarterly’s Craig Crawford – formerly an MSNBC political analyst – admitted that the mainstream media have “listen[ed] too much to the Democratic message” that the Tea Party movement will harm Republicans rather than Democrats in this year’s congressional elections. He further charged that the media are “playing into that Democratic message that these candidates are insane.” Crawford: Sometimes we’re wrong when we listen too much to the Democratic message. That’s the Democratic party message, that the Tea Party is bad for them [Republicans]. I think we should scrutinize that a bit more, be a little more skeptical of it. The other is that they’re all crazy. And that’s the trouble with focusing on all these statements and everything. We’re playing into that Democratic message that these candidates are insane. A bit earlier, after host Kurtz observed that the media do not “respect” Tea Party candidates and “some of us seem to be looking down our noses at these insurgents,” Crawford lamented: “Yeah, and I hate to see the mainstream media doing that because I certainly respect them and their politics. They have been very successful.” Crawford notably has a history of criticizing Republicans for charging that the media are biased against them in his book, “Attack the Messenger: How Politicians Turn You Against the Media.” Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Sunday, September 19, Reliable Sources on CNN: HOWARD KURTZ: Craig Crawford, let’s look at the political fallout. Whether we’re talking about Christine O’Donnell in Delaware or Joe Miller in Alaska or Sharron Angle in Nevada, these people went out and beat establishment candidates, often with not a lot of money. Shouldn’t journalists respect that? Instead there seems to be, well, this is mutual antagonism, we seem to be, some of us, I don’t want to include everybody, some of us seem to be looking down our noses at these insurgents and they don’t seem to be big fans of the mainstream media. CRAIG CRAWFORD, CONGRESSIONAL QUARTERLY: Yeah, and I hate to see the mainstream media doing that because I certainly respect them and they’re politics. They have been very successful. The thing about the Tea Party that strikes me is it’s very similar in particular their fiscal conservative views to the Perot movement. And this argument that they’re bad for Republicans doesn’t wash as much with me because at least they’re inside the Republican party. The Perot people were outside the party and much more damaging to Republicans. KURTZ: Craig, just briefly, what about this instant journalistic wisdom when these candidates, Christine O’Donnell being the latest, well, of course it hurts Republicans because they’re all going to lose in november, they’re too extreme, it’s one thing to win, you know, 30,000 votes in Delaware, another thing to win in state election. We’ve been wrong all year on some of these races. Could we be wrong again. CRAWFORD: Sometimes we’re wrong when we listen too much to the Democratic message. KURTZ, LAUGHING: Journalists, of course, are perfectly sane. We all know that.
