CULTURE BUZZ : The pilot who crashed into an Austin, Texas building this morning reportedly set his home on fire before hitting the IRS complex. His alleged manifesto can be read here. (Warning: weird and disturbing.) The Best Links: The U.S. law enforcement officials said authorities were trying to determine if the pilot intentionally targeted the IRS. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is continuing. 12:42 p.m.: The pilot of the plane had set his house on fire beforehand, stole the plane and crashed it intentionally, a federal official told CNN. A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said the crash was “apparently a criminal act” and that in such a case the FBI would be the lead investigating agency rather than the National Transportation Safety Administration. Two people have been rushed to hospital while one was still missing as smoke and flames poured from the side of the building in Austin. Alleged letter here. The manifesto is dated today, and it even anticipated his death. Letter via Soup. Read

Levi Johnston recently offered a classic defense of his deadbeat dad status, essentially claiming he is a mere deadbeat – he’s got no cash to pay child support. You need to have money and be withholding it to be a deadbeat dad, after all, and he says that’s not so. Baby mama Bristol Palin, however, is not buying it. Taking time away from calling out Family Guy on Facebook, Bristol has subpoenaed CNN and Playgirl to prove Levi is a big fat liar earning more than he says. A lawyer for Sarah Palin’s daughter is scoffing at legal documents filed by Team Levi, which claim the teen he earned a mere pittance over the last few years. Thus, he cannot pay the $1,688.42 a month in child support Bristol Palin seeks. We doubt that, and so does Bristol, who’s calling his bluff in a court of law. The gloves are coming off in this hilarious family feud . Palin’s lawyer issued subpoenas today to CNN, Playgirl, Entertainment Tonight, The Insider, Star Magazine , and The National Enquirer to discern how much they paid Levi. What Team Bristol believes is a smoking gun is Johnston’s dubious claim in a court declaration that he made no more than $10,000 a year prior to last year, 2009. But in the new docs, Palin’s lawyer attached Levi’s pay stub from 2008, showing that he raked in $18,594.50 from one employer – a construction company in Alaska. If he lied about that, imagine what he’s lying about regarding the half-dozen celebrity gossip programs and publications listed above. Clearly they paid him a little. Also, come on. Playgirl is no Playboy , but those Levi Johnston nude photo spreads were big sellers! Surely he got a big ass advance or some royalties, right?

Palin Wants CNN to Spill Beans on Levi Johnston
This morning I woke to a bunch of messages regarding a report on prescription drug addiction in Florida on CNN's Campbell Brown. With an average of eleven people a day dying of overdoses from prescription drugs in Florida, this story deserves all the attention it can get. When we reported on Broward County's pill mills four months ago in “The OxyContin Express” we were amazed at how little attention this huge national story was getting. As journalists for Vanguard, we are constantly asking ourselves the same questions on every story we pitch, “Has this been done before, and

This morning I woke to a bunch of messages regarding the similarities between a report on CNN last night and “The OxyContin Express.” I frankly think it would be petty of me in face of the Florida’s problems and the overall tragic human cost of prescription drug abuse to quibble over the shots, style, substance, or even scarf that people are referencing. I’ve been in this business long enough to know that these things happen.

For decades, the media has influenced public perception of Italian Americans; painting them as mobsters, gangsters, and most recently, as wild, party-going narcissists. VC2 producers Lou Rinaldi and Erick Kwiecien set out to see if the stereotypes have any truth in them. Their journey took them up and down the east coast, where they interviewed strangers, family members, and officers in the largest Italian-American service organization in the USA. added by: erickkwiecien

(CNN) — Federal judges tentatively ruled on Monday that California must reduce the number of inmates in its overcrowded prison system by up to 40 percent to stop a constitutional violation of prisoners' rights. “Overcrowding is the primary cause of the unconstitutional conditions that have been found to exist in the California prisons,” the court concluded. added by: samoanj
