Stephen Colbert’s Mother Passes Away at 92

Lorna Elizabeth Tuck Colbert – the mother of Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert, along with 10 others – passed away on Wednesday. She was 92 years old. According to an obituary in South Carolina’s Post and Courier , Lorna was an artist , businesswoman and church leader. She lost her husband and two kids in a 1974 plane crash, while another child died in a separate incident, leaving her survived by her remaining eight kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In February of last year, Stephen Colbert took a few days leave of absence to deal with an ill Lorna, only to return and give her a subtle shout-out in his first new show back: “Evidently, having 11 children makes you tough as nails,” he said. “Confidential to a lovely lady.” We send the Colbert family our thoughts and prayers.

Happy Golden Globes Nomination Day everyone! While you mull over this year’s crop of obvious picks (” Argo f*** yourself,” Academy ) and not so obvious surprises ( Salmon Fishing in the Yemen , Hope Springs , Taylor Swift and Jon Bon Jovi? Are we really doing this, HFPA?) let’s delight in the reactions of the chosen few who’ll vie for Golden Globes glory on Sunday, January 13. (Updated as nominee reactions roll in…) UPDATED with Jack Black hilarity & more: Helen Mirren, actress, Hitchcock (Best Actress – Drama) “Alma thanks you from the bottom of her heart for the recognition of her contribution to film.” Wes Anderson , director, Moonrise Kingdom (Best Picture – Comedy or Musical) “I received this news by text message on the fast train to Berlin. The Hollywood Foreign Press has brightened a bleak snowy day in Germany for me. I could not be more pleased on behalf of our gang.” Jack Black , actor, Bernie (Best Actor – Comedy or Musical) “OK…I’m only doing Richard Linklater movies from now on. I’m so proud of our little engine that could. Thank you HFPA!” Emily Blunt, actress, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (Best Actress – Comedy or Musical) “I’m so incredibly thankful to the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing our little movie that could. Ewan and the entire cast and crew could not be more deserving of this honor, and I’m thrilled that I’m able to share this moment among such a fantastic group of nominees.” Ben Affleck , director of Argo (Best Director, Best Motion Picture – Drama) “I want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for honoring Argo with five nominations. These nominations reflect the courage and determination of real life heroes in the US, Canada, Iran and across the globe. They honor more than 120 actors with speaking roles in multiple languages, thousands of extras in the US and abroad as well as hundreds of extraordinary crewmembers who poured their heart into the film — including the great Alan Arkin, brilliant Chris Terrio and extraordinary Alexandre Desplat, who were nominated today as well and who have my congratulations and gratitude. Thanks again to the HFPA for their support.” Kathryn Bigelow , director/producer of Zero Dark Thirty (Best Director, Best Motion Picture – Drama) “It’s an honor, sincerely, and very humbling to be singled out this way by the HFPA. We’re grateful, and encouraged by their support, especially since our film has such a diverse, international cast, and as the HFPA represent so many countries across the globe. And a big congratulations to the amazing Jessica Chastain and my producing partner and screenwriter Mark Boal.” Anne Hathaway , actress, Les Miserables (Best Supporting Actress) “What a great way to wake up! I couldn’t be happier or more grateful for this news. Congratulations to Hugh and everyone who worked on Les Miz for their contribution to the best picture nomination!!!” Judi Dench, actress, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (Best Actress – Comedy or Musical) “This is lovely news… Having had such a glorious time in India, I’m so happy for John Madden and Graham Broadbent and delighted to be included in such a wonderful group of fellow actors.” Richard Gere, actor, Arbitrage (Best Actor – Drama) “This was a complicated and challenging role. It’s nice to have the HFPA acknowledge the performance and for me to share the nomination with such brilliant actors.” John Hawkes, actor, The Sessions (Best Actor – Drama) “I’m so honored by these nominations and excited that the film is receiving this recognition.”  Alan Arkin, actor, Argo (Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture) “I am deeply grateful for this honor and particularly moved in being in the company of Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Tommy Lee Jones who I deeply admire. I am also thrilled that Ben is getting the attention he so much deserves, as is Argo .” Mark Boal, writer/producer of Zero Dark Thirty (Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture – Drama) “We’re very grateful to the HFPA. It means so much to us that press representatives from around the world have reacted with such praise. It’s especially flattering as we’ve seen the film from the beginning as a global story, one that involved and impacted much of the world. Congratulations to Kathryn Bigelow and Jessica Chastain on nominations much deserved.” Tim Burton, producer/director of Frankenweenie (Best Animated Feature Film) “I’m thrilled to be recognized by the HFPA. Frankenweenie is a very personal project for me and the nomination goes as much to the animators who labored frame by frame to bring this film to life.” Mark Andrews, director of Brave (Best Animated Feature Film) “The adventure of Brave began in Scotland, where the mystery and majesty of the land fueled our imaginations. From haggis to highland games, creating this film truly changed our fate. On behalf of everyone at Pixar, we would like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for the incredible honor of this nomination.” Graham Broadbent, producer, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (Best Picture – Comedy or Musical) “ Marigold seems to be turning in to the ‘little film that could’. We’ve had a wonderful ride — it’s been hugely enjoyed by audiences around the world, and that’s really enough for any filmmaker. We couldn’t be happier that the HFPA and SAG are remembering our film, all our cast, and particularly our two ‘international treasures’ Dames, Judi and Maggie. Ol Parker’s script and John Madden’s vision made an experience in the cinemas that was both emotional, transforming and very funny, and reminded audiences of an important universal message, ‘there’s more life to live’ — whatever your age. We are so pleased with our passionate partners at Fox Searchlight and Participant for the care they’ve given our film.” Chris Terrio, screenwriter, Argo (Best Screenplay) “Having a screenplay produced for the first time is a tremendous gift for any writer. To see the script directed by Ben, with the brilliant cast and crew he assembled, and then honored by the HFPA, feels like winning the screenwriter lottery.” Alexandre Desplat, composer, Argo (Best Original Score – Motion Picture) “It is an honor to be nominated again by the HFPA. Writing the score for Argo was a rare experience and I wish to thank Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Grant Heslov and Chay Carter for taking me onboard their flight to Iran. I want to share my nomination with all the brilliant musicians from all over the world who performed on my score.” RELATED ARTICLES: Golden Globes Unveil 70th Edition Nominees Globes Analysis: Hooper, Russell, De Niro Snubbed & Is Waltz Really A Supporting Actor? Matt Damon And Michael Douglas Mapped Out Their ‘Behind The Candelabra’ Love Scenes Like Football Plays

Matt Damon says Michael Douglas is a “wonderful” kisser. He also tells Playboy magazine that he and the veteran actor strategized their onscreen make-out sessions for Steven Soderbergh’ s Liberace movie for HBO, Behind The Candelabra , “like a football plan,” which scarily brings to mind John Madden and Al Michaels cavorting in Speedos while diagramming a play-action pass.  The Promised Land actor tells interviewer Stephen Rebello that he usually says no to nude scenes, “but I just did a lot of it playing the long-term partner of Liberace, Scott Thorson in Behind the Candelabra .”  He took the plunge, he explains, because Soderbergh, who directed Damon on the Oceans films and The Informant! was behind the camera and the scenes in question were “tastefully done.” And, really, who could resist being held firmly in the masculine arms of the silver-maned actor who played Gordon Gekko ? Damon, who plays the much younger lover of the flamboyant piano showman — the Norman Jean Roy photograph above, which appeared in Vanity Fair, shows them in character — says the movie will make some people uncomfortable because “you’re witnessing something really intimate you would normally see with a man and a woman, but instead it’s two men”. He, on the other hand, found the dynamic “thrilling” even though some of the more intimate scenes weren’t “the most natural thing in the world to do, though. Like, for one scene, I had to come out of a pool, go over to Michael, straddle him on a chaise longue and start kissing him. And throughout the script, it’s not like I kiss him just once. We drew it up like a football plan.” At least he didn’t make a pitcher/catcher reference. Damon goes on to say that he once asked the late Heath Ledger  how he managed the scene with Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain where to two men hungrily suck face.  Ledger’s response: “Well, mate, I drank half a case of beer in my trailer.”  Damon add that when he laughed at that response, Ledger told him: “No, I’m serious. I needed to just go for it. If you can’t do that, you’re not making the movie.” The conversation leads Rebello to ask Damon what it was like “when you and Ben Affleck were constantly asked if you were gay, back when you were starting your careers” “I never denied those rumors because I was offended and didn’t want to offend my friends who were gay—as if being gay were some kind of fucking disease,” Damon responds. “It put me in a weird position in that sense. The whole thing was just gross.” [ Playboy ] Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter.  Follow Movieline on Twitter.

WATCH: Rapper Skee-Lo Reviews ‘The Hobbit,’ Proclaims Bilbo A ‘G’

You know who probably wishes he was a little bit taller, and wishes he was a baller? BILBO BAGGINS, that’s who! Which is why it’s so genius that the good folks over at NextMovie tapped rapper Skee-Lo to critique Peter Jackson ‘s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey , which incidentally now has the best pull-quote of the year: “The Hobbit,” proclaims Skee-Lo, “is a G.” In other news, Skee-Lo (AKA Antoine Roundtree) has a new album. And a girl! Dreams do come true. [via NextMovie ]

Jon Stewart Says Hugh Grant Will Never Be On ‘The Daily Show’ Again

Hugh Grant must be a talented actor because when he’s simply being himself, he comes off as a serious a-hole. The source?  None other than Jon Stewart , the anchor of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, for my money, a more trusted news source than CNN. The website Third Beat is reporting comments that Stewart made on Friday while being interviewed by his Comedy Central colleague Stephen Colbert at a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival in New Jersey.  During this candid chat, Stewart revealed that  his least favorite guest of all time is Grant, who apparently has not been on the show since 2009 thanks to his hostile off-camera behavior. And Stewart vowed to “never” have him on again. A clip of that appearance which ET.com posted is below (via Comedy Central), and what’s remarkable is that on-camera, Grant comes off like the smug-but-charming rake that he often plays in movies (and the Murdoch phone-hacking scandal).  He needles Stewart, but the interplay seems good natured. The situation was much more unpleasant behind the scenes, however.  Although Stewart explained that Daily Show producers have dealt with “dictators on the show,” Grant was “giving everyone shit the whole time, and he’s a big pain in the ass.” The actor, who was appearing on the show to promote his film with Sarah Jessica Parker , Did You Hear About the Morgans?   also angrily complained about the film clip that played during his segment, despite the fact that it had been supplied by the film’s publicist. Stewart told Colbert that Grant groused, “What is that clip? It’s a terrible clip.”  It’s unclear whether Stewart said the following directly to Grant or as an aside to Colbert, but the Daily Show anchor’s response was,   “Well, then make a better fucking movie.” Reps for Stewart and Grant did not respond by post time. Voters Back Colbert to Fill Vacant Senate Seat

South Carolina native Stephen Colbert is the top choice of Palmetto State residents to fill the U.S. Senate seat recently vacated by Jim DeMint, a new poll indicates. DeMint is stepping down to head a conservative think tank. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will appoint a successor to complete DeMint’s term, which ends in 2014. That November, an election will be held … but until then it’s Haley’s call alone. According to Public Policy Polling, The Colbert Report host would be the most popular appointee . Colbert has already expressed interest in the vacancy, too. The Comedy Central staple has been asking viewers to tweet at Gov. Haley, a Republican who he calls a “friend of the show,” and lobby her to appoint him. The federal government would certainly become a lot funnier overnight. Could this really happen? Probably not, though Haley’s approval ratings are way down with Democrats and independents, so a PR coup might not hurt. Just saying. Colbert is famous for trying to insert himself into the political process. He attempted to run in this year’s South Carolina primary and started his own Super PAC. Should Stephen Colbert be appointed to the U.S. Senate?   Yes! He’s hilarious and smart, too! No, someone else! View Poll »
