The Perfect HuffPo Entry: Liberal Condescension and Anti-Reagan Revisionism

Believe it or not, the Huffington Post has actually performed a public service. In publishing author Mark Juddery’s “ The 8 Most Overrated People In History: You’ll Never Believe Who Made The List,” the official blog of liberal Hollywood reminds us in one brief web slideshow how the left is both condescending and intellectually dishonest. Condescending because in repeating some (by now) well known corrections to famous stories Juddery seems to think he’s bringing the iconoclastic truth to the blinkered public. Intellectually dishonest because in running down President Ronald Reagan with a list of failings that might have been culled from any 1988 edition of The New York Times, he reminds us where many liberals really stood during the latter part of the Cold War, and how they stoutly refused to accept (Soviet) defeat. Juddery’s list of overrated people comes from his book, “The 50 Most Overrated Things in History.” It must be a real page-turner if it these shocking revelations are typical: there was no real King Arthur; in landing on Hispaniola, Columbus thought he’d reached India; there’s no record that Lady Godiva ever rode naked through Coventry. Anyone with a decent education and a minimal amount of common sense can only shrug and wonder who paid Juddery to write this. And anyone who has a nodding relationship with the History Channel probably knows that Thomas Edison was a sharp businessman (“classic Dickensian employer,” in Juddery’s words) who employed hundreds of researchers and scientists working in his name. Saving the best for last, Juddery dismisses the legacy of Ronald Reagan with nasty disdain. To call Reagan great, Juddery contends, is to “ignore the Iran-Contra scandal, the huge budget deficits, his environment ignorance, his do-nothing reaction to the looming AIDS epidemic, his courting of Saddam Hussein, and numerous other blunders.” As for ending the Cold War, Juddery rehashes the leftist caricatures of Reagan the dangerous war-monger. “[O]thers have suggested that Reagan’s arms build-up was a cunning ploy to bankrupt the USSR, which is a relief, because I always thought it was a cunning ploy to risk everyone’s life.” Reagan used embarrassing rhetoric like “evil empire” and “was very uncooperative in peace talks” with “the reformer Mikhail Gorbachev,” until “facing scandal and low approval ratings, he was willing to do anything – even something crazy like helping to save the world.” Luckily, Juddery’s Reagan shares more than hype with King Arthur, since neither of them were real.

US Turning Into USSR

“While the many glaring differences between the two political systems have been exhaustively publicized – especially in the U.S. – the glaring similarities [go] unnoticed,” Celente writes in The Trends Journal, which he publishes. In the accompanying video, Celente describes some of these similarities, including: A rotten political system: He compares politicians (Democrats and Republicans alike) to “Mafioso” and says campaign contributions are really thinly disguised “bribes and payoffs.” Crony capitalism: Like in the USSR of old, Celente laments that so much of America's wealth (93%) is controlled by such a small group small portion of its population (10%). Owing to that concentration of wealth, the government makes policies designed to reward “the bigs” at the expense of average citizens (see: Bailouts, banks). Military-industrial complex: The USSR went bankrupt fighting the cold war and Celente fears the U.S. is “squandering its greater but still finite resources on a gargantuan defense budget, fighting unwinnable hot wars and feeding an insatiable military stationed on hundreds of bases worldwide.” As with many observers, Celente thinks America will suffer the same fate in Afghanistan as the USSR, the British Empire, Alexander the Great and all others who've ventured into the “graveyard of empires.” The irony, of course, is that while America defeated Soviet Communism and won the Cold War, perhaps our greatest threat today comes from China and its booming state-controlled economy. http://finance.yahoo.com/tech-ticker/article/535351/America-Won-the-Cold-War-But… http://www.rickandsusanna.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/ussa.jpg added by: ibrake4rappers13

The world’s first ‘lasagna sandwich’

It is the type of snack that perhaps only a student could love. But the lasagna sandwich, probably most suitable as a treat made from leftovers after a heavy night out, has gone on sale at Tesco. The supermarket claims the cold sandwich is a world first and has painted it as a healthy option. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1294135/Does-fancy-lasagne-sandwich-Tesc… added by: TravG73

Rand Paul To America’s Poor: You Don’t Have It So Bad

Don't fret, American poor people! Turns out you're living better than “the rest of the world,” according to Kentucky Republican Senate nominee Rand Paul. Responding to an attack from Democratic nominee Jack Conway at a candidate forum yesterday, Paul tried to defend his past statement that the president criticizing BP is “un-American.” Paul launched into a spirited defense of “the engine of capitalism,” and worried that assaults on it — like the criticisms of BP from Conway and his Democratic friends — could lead to a “day of reckoning” in the U.S., and perhaps a Depression. This somehow led to a lesson Paul said Kentuckians should hold dear: Sure there are “problems” with the way America deals with the poor, but when they think about it, poor folks should thank goodness they're not stuck in one of those other horrible countries. “The poor in our country are enormously better off than the rest of the world,” Paul said. “Doesn't mean we can't do better, but we have to acknowledge and be proud of our system of capitalism, be proud of our American way.” How'd he get there? Paul told a little story about the Cold War to set up his argument that the poor have it pretty good in America when you really stop to think about it: One of the important lessons that came out of the Cold War — and this is an important description that I don't think comes up enough — the Cold War was won by America because the engine of capitalism defeated the engine of socialism. The Soviets used to show a propaganda film — they wanted to show how horrible America was and how our poor were doing so poorly. They filmed a building in the poor section of New York with some broken windows and they said, 'Oh this is how the poor in America lives.' But it backfired on them because the Soviet citizens looked at that video closely and they saw flickering color television sets in all those windows. So, the takeway: Don't worry, freezing poor people with broken windows. At least you've got color TV. added by: TimALoftis

Weekday Vegetarian: Grilled Watermelon and Tomato Salad to Cool Your Off

During heat waves in my childhood, my mother would send us outside with thick slabs of sweet, dripping watermelon. My brother and I would stick out faces into it and let the cold juice run down our chins. Watermelon today is seedless, thereby depriving the current generation of children the joy of competitive watermelon seed spitting, but it can still cool you off on a hot day….
