Chris Brown Leads List of BET Hip Hop Award Winners

It’s good to be Chris Brown right now. Team Breezy has his back. Karrueche Tran is not pregnant. Even Rihanna says she’s a fan. And the BET Hip Hop Awards just bestowed three honors upon him. Most notably, Chris won Best Hip-Hop Video for “Look at Me Now.” Brown was on tour and not present, but Tweeted: “Thank you BET but most of all TeamBreezy!” The show, hosted by Mike Epps and MC’d by Da Brat (yep, she’s still around) opened up with a performance by T.I. (no word if the party bus took him there). Wiz Khalifa, Heavy D and Tyrese, Rick Ross and the Maybach Music Group, Big Sean and even DMX alongside Swizz Beatz hit the stage and rocked the crowd. Lupe Fiasco also took the mic and gave a political performance (big surprise) with a mysteriously masked female vocalist who turned out to be … Erykah Badu. Me and my girl Taraji are doing another classic together soon.!! John Singleton will be directing us. And no it’s not BB2.” The two recently starred in Tyrese’s video for “Stay,” too. Of their collaboration, he said: “I love her [and] she loves me. She’s a beautiful person, very humble, funny as hell. Even though it’s been ten years [since ‘Baby Boy’] you can’t really put a timeline between magic. I think she’s really special, beautiful and I was honored that she wanted to do my ‘Stay’ video” Can’t wait to see what these two come up with now! Shia LaBeouf Calls Marilyn Manson Video ‘A Cool Diversion’

Unlikely duo will celebrate ‘Born Villain’ short film with book signing and screening Thursday in L.A. By Kara Warner with reporting by Josh Horowitz Marilyn Manson, Narcissister and Shia LaBeouf attend the “Born Villain” screening in Los Angeles on August 29 Photo: Christopher Polk/Getty Images File this story under the most surprising of pairings: “Transformers” superstar Shia LaBeouf and Marilyn Manson have teamed up for Manson’s new music video, “Born Villain.” So how did these two artists come together? Well, they met at a Kills concert, where LaBeouf, a longtime Manson fan, casually approached the “Beautiful People” singer and struck up a conversation that sparked a genuine friendship. “Marilyn Manson to me is an indelible figure,” LaBeouf told MTV New, speaking exclusively about the collaboration for the first time. “He’s a big deal to me, and in my childhood, I don’t know of a scarier figure in art. He, in my teenage years, was the scariest thing in the world, so part of me has always been intrigued.” LaBeouf told Manson that he would love to direct his next video and showed him his previous work, Cage’s “Maniac” clip , as proof that he knows what he’s doing behind the camera. “I played ‘Maniac’ for [Manson], and he freaked the f— out,” LaBeouf recalled. “Manson goes crazy. Manson’s like, ‘I want you to do my video.’ ” The two then began prep work on “Born Villain,” which draws heavily from very intense, graphic imagery, specifically a famous French surrealist short film, Shakespeare and theology. “The song has all these references to ‘Macbeth’ and all this Shakespeare and heavy theology, so we tried to make Manson’s ‘Un Chien Andalou’ macabre ‘Macbeth’ — that’s sort of what that became.” To celebrate the LaBeouf-directed video, which is much more short film than standard clip, LaBeouf and Manson will be appearing together at a one-time-only book signing and screening Thursday at Hennessey + Ingalls bookstore in Los Angeles from 8 to 10 p.m. The 18-and-up event is private and limited to 150 attendees on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to receive tickets, those who wish to attend must purchase the limited-edition “Born Villain” photo book at the Hennessey + Ingalls website , which also comes with a copy of the short film. Unsurprisingly, the imagery in the video is very graphic and very adult. Those who only know LaBeouf from his clean-cut film roles will likely be shocked by this directorial effort, but LaBeouf isn’t worried about those reactions. “This, for me, this is a really cool diversion for me when I’m not making a movie,” LaBeouf explained. “It gives me an opportunity to work with musicians I admire who I would otherwise never get to work with in any other capacity. I really have a fun time doing it. It allows me to be creative in another art form and work with heroes. “I also think there are fans of mine who aren’t fans of Manson’s and vice versa; that’s why I think our collaboration is interesting. I don’t really see it on paper,” he continued. “I don’t see fans of mine who went to see ‘Holes’ when they were 12 loving this. I don’t think my audience is the only thing I should exercise my artistic muscle for. I don’t necessarily always do things for the audience; this is one of those. “I love Marilyn,” LaBeouf said. “Manson is like a brother to me now. He’s a real sweet dude, a real close friend.” Related Artists Marilyn Manson

Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’ Is VMA Video Of The Year

‘I feel like I am doing something right when I sing that song,’ Perry says when accepting her Moonman. By Kelley Carter Katy Perry accepts the Video Of The Year award at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Getty Images Capping her most successful year yet, Katy Perry racked up the top award at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards ‘ Video of the Year for “Firework.” The singer — dressed in a cartoonish, multicolored dress with a square-shaped headband-like contraption on her head — kissed her hubby, actor Russell Brand , and hugged a few people, including Adele, whom she was up against, before heading to the stage to accept her award from actress Katie Holmes. “Oh my goodness! Thank you so much,” Perry said. “This has been a night of firsts. This is my second Moonman. I’m very proud of the song it stands for, which is ‘Firework.’ I feel like I am doing something right when I sing that song. So thanks to everyone who helped to create it.” Click for photos of Katy’s VMA red carpet looks. She thanked her team and then continued, after the crowd simmered down a bit, “To all of y’all out there! Thank you so much! To all my fans! And last but not least, my husband!” The cameras focused on Brand just as she was thanking him, and he was visibly emotional. Perry was the most nominated artist this year, with nine nods total. She ultimately collected two for the evening, including an award for Best Collaboration on “E.T.” with Kanye West. She also competed for Best Female Video, Best Art Direction, Best Direction, Best Editing, Best Special Effects and Best Cinematography. Katy Perry Ties Michael Jackson Singles Record

‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’ marks Perry’s fifth #1 single from Teenage Dream, equal only to MJ’s Bad achievement. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: C. Flanigan/ FilmMagic Back in June, Katy Perry was closing in on Michael Jackson ‘s record for the most #1 singles from the same album — and now she’s tied it up. Thanks to the feel-good party jam “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” Perry has the same number of #1 singles from Teenage Dream on the Hot 100 as the late King of Pop did from 1987’s Bad. Now, Perry is both the only woman with five #1 singles from the same album and also the only living artist with that record. So what singles got her there aside from “Last Friday Night”? Perry’s previous #1’s from Teenage Dream are “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework” and “E.T.” Jackson achieved this feat back in 1987 and 1988 with “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Man in the Mirror” and “Dirty Diana” from his Bad album. “What a way to wake up! SO proud to announce that the little-engine-that-could of a song ‘LAST FRIDAY NIGHT’ is officially #1 & made HISTORY!” the singer tweeted Wednesday (August 17). “&u know, I couldn’t have done it with out ya, really I owe u guys BIG… so take this moment to give yourself a high FIVE!!! #allbecauseofu.” Explore our “Katy Perry: By The Numbers” infographic: Perry broke another singles record earlier this month, having the first album from the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart to have five #1 singles. Perry’s Teenage Dream album is the first in the nearly 19-year history of the chart to accomplish that feat. “Last Friday Night” has proven to be another successful track for the star, and the party anthem recently got an assist from Missy Elliott on the remix . Perry’s Teenage Dream videos have also been cultural smashes. For the 2011 Video Music Awards , Perry racked up the most nominations with nine, including nods for Video of the Year and Best Female Video for “Firework”; Best Pop Video for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”; and Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction, Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Special Effects for the Floria Sigismondi-directed “E.T.,” which features fellow nominee Kanye West. Her dreamy “Teenage Dream” clip even nabbed a nomination for Best Cinematography. What’s your favorite Teenage Dream single? Let us know in the comments below! The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Jay-Z And Kanye’s ‘Otis’ Video: Maybach Massacre

Subtly swaggadocious video, directed by Spike Jonze, sees the dynamic duo chopping up a Maybach — just for the heck of it. By James Montgomery Jay-Z and Kanye West in their “Otis” video Photo: Roc-A-Fella It would be darn-near impossible for Jay-Z and Kanye West ‘s “Otis” video to match the braggadocious blitz of the song itself, but give them credit for at least coming close. Because while the Spike-Jonze directed clip (which just premiered on MTV and MTV.com) doesn’t feature a single Gulfstream G450, Cuban cigar, Hermes clutch or Benz, it is still a subtly swagged-out affair — a cocksure, cool thing in which the dynamic duo take a saber saw to a glistening new Maybach and turn it into a tricked-out “Thunderdome” cruiser, then do doughnuts in a parking lot with a gaggle of models packed in the back. Oh, and there are some fireworks too. And really, on the swag scale, that ranks somewhere between 10 and 30 thousand 100 million , which certainly makes “Otis” one of the more assured videos to come down the pipeline in a long while. And give credit to all parties involved that they realized they really didn’t need to do much of anything else in the clip; after all, ‘Ye, Hov and Jonze are certainly three of the biggest stars in the world, and their collaboration could’ve easily devolved into the realm of self-parody (see the late, not-so-great Diddy and Nas team-up “Hate Me Now” ). Instead, we get a video that’s little more than a couple of dudes (and Aziz Ansari) tooling around in a parking lot — which, really, is all “Otis” needs to be. Because like Watch the Throne , the album from which it comes , the main attraction of “Otis” lies in the fact that it features roughly 50 percent of the biggest rap names in the game (not to say the song isn’t also great, because it is). There’s a genuine thrill in watching West and Jay hang over each other while delivering their verses or crack up behind the wheel of the Maybach; in a way, it’s like we’re getting a tiny glimpse into their private world. And that’s what makes the video such a treat. What do the critics think of Watch the Throne ? Unlike his previous collaborations with West — the maudlin short film “We Were Once a Fairytale” or the deceptively simple “Flashing Lights” — with “Otis,” Jonze plays it relatively straight. There are the same tracking shots he’s used in old Beastie Boys videos, and the blown-out color palette recalls even earlier work like R.E.M.’s “Crush With Eyeliner” or “Electrolite.” He’s staying true to his roots, which, given the caliber of everyone involved, is an accomplishment in its own right. So while “Otis” might not be what you were expecting, in a lot of ways, it’s even more. There’s an unabashed joy to it, and there’s no denying the power of its singular image, either: slicing and dicing a Maybach (average sticker price: $380,000) is a bold, ballsy declaration, indeed. One that speaks louder than a million boasts. What did you think of the “Otis” video? Share your thoughts on Facebook or tweet your reactions and videos @MTVNews with the hashtag #MTVOtis ! Laidback Luke Plans For Big ‘Natural Disaster’

The ‘Turbulence’ producer lays out his strategy for his next single with Example, and another with Wynter Gordon. By Akshay Bhansali Laidback Luke Photo: Tomorrowland Festival Veteran Dutch producer Laidback Luke is known for leveling some of the most explosive live sets in the business, as was certainly the case last month, at the main stage of Boom, Belgium’s Tomorrowland Festival . Luke dropped his rendition of Kanye West’s, “All of the Lights,” “Timebomb” (with Jonathan Mendelson) and crowd favorite “Turbulence,” his hit single with Steve Aoki and Lil Jon . In the pantheon of Laidback Luke bangers, according to the producer himself, “Turbulence,” ranks among the greats. ” ‘Turbulence’ is one of the harder tracks I’ve made,” Luke told MTV News just before his set at Tomorrowland. “Steve is a big influence in that. When we made it, I could see him doing his stage dive and taking shirts off. And for me, when I play that track in my set, it’s definitely a peak. I’ll be jumping myself too, not taking shirts off or stage-diving, but Steve definitely adds up the energy for me.” With Tomorrowland now behind him, Luke has big plans for the rest of the year: He’s linked up with British singer Example for a whopping single called “Natural Disaster,” the instrumental mix of which is out already (and the version with Example’s vocals has leaked online too). Judging by the TL crowd’s response to the song as his set-opener, it certainly makes sense that Luke and Example are hoping to do more with it. ” ‘Natural Disaster’ is doing really well for me right now,” Luke said. “We are shooting a video soon, looking at treatments right now. We have a couple of young directors we are looking at, so it’s gonna be great.” And after the success of his remix of Wynter Gordon’s “Dirty Talk” last year, he may come to New York to shoot the video for another collaboration with her. “Wynter came through with a video concept for, ‘Speak Up,’ ” the producer explained. “She wanted to have, like, a block party, and we are gonna shoot it where she grew up in New York.” “All the focus is on, ‘Natural Disaster,’ for the moment,” Luke added, when pressed for details on the new single. “And then we’ll go full force on, ‘Speak Up.’ ” While, like most dance music artists in the summer, he’s busy touring the world in the world, but he did drop one sliver of a “maybe,” EDM fans will be excited to hear: He just might be working with Steve Aoki again. “DJs are working hard this summer!” Luke exclaimed. “We’ll see after the summer is done, [then] we’ll do more studio time.” Related Photos Tomorrowland Festival 2011 Related Artists Laidback Luke
