Chris Brown Video Director Calls VMA Noms ‘Crazy’

Colin Tilley tells MTV News it’s ‘really cool’ to see clips he helmed for Breezy and Justin Bieber getting awards-show nods. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts Chris Brown Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Colin Tilley has been having a heck of a year directing videos for Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Diddy-Dirty Money and Justin Bieber. Now, the California native finds two of his works nominated for the 2011 VMAs . Tilley’s clip for Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now” is up for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Collaboration, while his video for Justin Bieber’s “U Smile” garnered a nod in the Best Male Video category. “It’s crazy to see the videos that we’ve been doing getting awards, actually nominations in general, from the VMAs. It’s pretty amazing,” Tilley told MTV News on Tuesday when we visited the set of Wiz Khalifa’s upcoming “No Sleep” video. “As far as the hip-hop [category], ‘Look at Me Now,’ in general, is an amazing song. I remember when I got that song, I was like, ‘Jeez, this is a hit right here. This is just going to win some awards,’ as soon as I even I heard the song,” Tilley recalled of the vid that features both Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes. “The video just naturally and very seamlessly came together and we created something that I think is really cool.” While the director has worked most frequently with Brown — directing a number of his videos, including “Deuces,” “She Ain’t You” and “No BS” — Tilley also built a nice working relationship with Bieber after directing his 2010 visual for “Never Let You Go.” ” ‘U Smile’ was a very special video because I got to see Justin grow up. So we definitely went for this cinematic, stylized feel that really just showcased him as an iconic artist, as an icon in general,” the lens master said. “That was a really special experience. I remember the night before he had some award and he came to the set and he was really feeling himself. It was awesome.” You can vote for general VMA categories, including Best New Artist , by visiting VMA.MTV.com or m.mtv.com on your mobile phone. Big Sean ‘Hype’ About First VMA Nomination

‘I called my mom and I woke her up,’ the G.O.O.D. Music MC tells MTV News of finding out about his nod on tour. By Rob Markman Big Sean Photo: Theo Wargo/ WireImage Big Sean received his first VMA nomination on Wednesday, and hopefully it won’t be his last. In the opening scene of his “My Last” video with Chris Brown, Sean looks into the camera and says, “I feel like my dreams are coming true” — must be because the Detroit rhyme spitter is up for Best New Artist. “Man, I was hype as hell,” the G.O.O.D. Music MC told MTV News. “I called my mom at like midnight. I was in Charlotte [North Carolina] last night when I found out, and I called my mom and I woke her up,” said Sean, who is on tour with fellow Best New Artist nominee Wiz Khalifa. “I cracked a bottle and everything. That was a real big accomplishment.” The competition is tough, with Tyler, the Creator (“Yonkers”), Kreayshawn (“Gucci Gucci”) and indie poppers Foster the People (“Pumped Up Kicks”) also up for the award. Sean obviously wants to win, but just being in the conversation is a win for him. “I, of course, knew it was a possibility, but it’s tight to just see it actually come to fruition,” Sean said of his mind-set back when he filmed the video. “When I was on the set of the video, I was just hoping it comes out good. This is just like an added bonus.” Sean isn’t the only member of his crew nominated: His big homey Kanye West snagged seven nominations, including nods for Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Male Video and Best Collaboration for his “All of the Lights” clip. “He definitely deserves all of them, man, I think so,” Big Sean said. “Especially Best Collaboration. That was just crazy, ‘All of the Lights.’ He had Elton John, everybody on there, Fergie, Alicia Keys, Cudi, everybody, The-Dream.” The Finally Famous lyricist is in full support of his mentor. “Kanye always goes hard. I’m proud of him. I was telling him how proud of him I was the other day. He’s inspiring, he deserves every bit,” he said. “He gives his whole life to music, his whole life. He’s one of the most selfless people I know, so I’m excited. Hopefully, it’s gonna be a good night.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Jay-Z Is Two Songs Deep Into Next Solo Album

Working on Watch the Throne with Kanye got the creative juices flowing for Blueprint 3 follow-up. By Alvin Blanco Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — While fans are still eagerly waiting for Jay-Z to drop his collaborative album with Kanye West, Watch the Throne, he has already started working on his next solo album. At an exclusive listening session for Throne on Thursday night at the Mercer Hotel, the Brooklyn rapper revealed that he is two songs deep into recording his 12th solo LP. The experience of creating the collaboration was so positive, Jay said, it inspired him begin working on new material of his own. Besides the two songs he has already completed, which he claimed were the best first pair of tunes he has ever created for one of his albums, he also has another four ideas ready to go. “I know exactly the tone and the whole feel of the album,” Jay-Z said of the follow-up to 2009’s platinum-certified The Blueprint 3. “I think when you experience creativity, you should get it out as much as possible.” Even though Watch the Throne isn’t in stores yet (pre-order receipts seem to indicate, unofficially, that it will be out on August 2), the “Empire State of Mind” rapper doesn’t want to stifle the creative juices that started flowing when he was working with West. And the inspiration flowed both ways, it seems. After getting Odd Future singer Frank Ocean to record a song for his solo album, Hov decided to have the crooner contribute his vocals to two Watch the Throne songs. So will this new solo effort come out before the discs from his Roc Nation signees J. Cole and Jay Electronica ? “Hopefully,” he quipped, before adding, “I don’t play that. We’re all competing for the same mind share. J. Cole and Jay Electronica are both making inspiring music.” Related Artists Jay-Z

Chris Brown BET Award Snafu Was ‘Human Error’

BET exec Stephen Hill takes full responsibility for Drake and Rihanna mistakenly being announced as Viewer’s Choice. By Rob Markman Chris Brown poses backstage at the BET Awards on Sunday Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Sunday night’s 2011 BET Awards Show was filled with amazing live performances, heartfelt acceptance speeches and that one strange moment when a trophy was mistakenly handed out to the wrong artist. When “106 & Park” hosts Terrance and Rocsi brought contest winner Tiffany Greene on stage to announce the Viewer’s Choice Award, Greene, like all the other presenters of the night, read the winner from a tablet PC, instead of doing the traditional envelope-opening. At first, she called out Chris Brown as the victor , but then she backtracked and gave the trophy to Drake for his collaboration with Rihanna, “What’s My Name.” “Well, this awkward,” said Drake to start his acceptance speech, after his and Rihanna’s name appeared on the video screen. But then it turned out that the intended recipient was Chris Brown after all, and as the show neared its end, BET cleared up the confusion and brought Breezy out to accept the award. An embarrassed Green took to Twitter and said, “Bawling backstage. They totally f—ed me up.” In a classy move, BET President of Music Programming and Specials Stephen Hill took full responsibility for the snafu. “That BET Awards Viewer’s Choice mix-up was due to human error,” he said in a tweet . “And I was the human that made that error. I apologize to ALL affected.” It was just a single blemish on an otherwise event-filled show which featured performances from Chris Brown, Lil Wayne , Mary J. Bilge, Alicia Keys and Beyonc

Lady Gaga Is ‘Just A Normal Girl’ … On 25-Inch Heels

As Born This Way rules the charts another week, producer DJ White Shadow says Gaga hasn’t changed since they first met. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images As Lady Gaga holds onto the #1 spot on Billboard, for the second straight week, with her chart-topping album Born This Way, DJ White Shadow is no doubt enjoying the success. When we caught up with the producer recently, he told us how their collaboration started off as a long-distance relationship. Back in 2009, White Shadow was approached to work on a co-headlining tour for Lady Gaga and Kanye West. After their Fame Kills Tour was canceled , though, Shadow was asked to focus on the next phase in Gaga’s career. The producer and the pop star had already built quite a foundation by the time they finally met in person in the summer of 2010. And while Shadow wasn’t completely sure what the encounter would be like, he had some clue that they would get along famously. “We had talked for so long before [we met in person]. We had talked on the phone or talked on iChat, in emails; I think we kind of knew about each other’s personalities,” he told MTV News. “I mean, obviously, I was excited to meet her. I felt like we were long-distance pen pals.” What he found out is that despite all of the unusual costumes, Gaga is a pretty regular 25-year-old. “She’s, like, super cool. I think everybody gets weirded out by ‘Oh, she looks so crazy on those 25-inch heels and the hair-bow,’ or whatever’s going on at the time, but she’s just a normal girl. Like, she’s funny. She’s really funny and super cool.” Shadow worked closely with Gaga and BTW musical director Fernando Garibay to create a pop album that would push the envelope. The DJ/producer worked on heavy-hitting tracks like “Born This Way,” “Government Hooker,” “Americano” and “Bloody Mary,” to name a few. So, how is Gaga as a boss, we wanted to know. “She’s the best boss. She’s a great friend,” he said. “She’s amazing. “Here’s the funny thing about this: People ask that question but I’m telling you, ’cause everyone wants to [know], ‘Does she say something to you as her friend or someone you know that she writes music with that she doesn’t say to us? Does she talk about New York in a way that she wouldn’t have done into a camera?’ And the answer is no,” he explained. “I’ve never seen her say something that was disingenuous.” Bottom line: Gaga is always Gaga. “The stories that she tells, the way that she looks on camera and the way that she acts … that’s how she is. That’s her character. She is the same.” In fact, like most New Yorkers, Gaga loves to shop for a good bargain. “I was walking down the street in front of the studio one day and she’s shopping for $20 shoes. She’s New York. We’ve been to dinner a couple times … just go to normal restaurants. It’s New York, it’s her home, right?” he said. “So, I’ve definitely heard all the stories that she’s telling. She’s very open.” What’s your favorite Born This Way track? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos Lady Gaga: Inside The Outside Related Artists Lady Gaga
