99-Year-Old Black Woman Veteran Gets Second Chance To Walk Across Graduation Stage

Continued here:

N early 70 years ago World War II veteran Elizabeth Barker Johnson was faced with a tough decision. She had to choose between attending her college graduation at the risk of losing her job or going to work. Johnson—who was a teacher at the time—chose her job and sadly missed out on the opportunity to walk across the stage at the Winston-Salem State University commencement ceremony and receive her degree. According to the Winston-Salem Journal , the North Carolina-based institution reached out to Johnson and invited her to attend their upcoming graduation. 99-year-old will finally get to participate in graduation 70 years after earning her degree from @WSSURAMS @wssualumni https://t.co/Xdsouqvz12 — Winston-SalemJournal (@JournalNow) May 3, 2019 Johnson, 99, was a part of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion of the Women’s Army Corps. The group was the only all-Black woman battalion that served overseas during WW II. She was stationed in England. After returning home, she became the first woman to attend Winston-Salem State University under the GI Bill. Johnson earned her teaching degree from the university in 1949. After finishing school, she quickly landed a job in education, but unfortunately due to work restrictions she was unable to attend her graduation. “I couldn’t get anyone to substitute for me back then, so I had to miss my graduation. It was terrible,” she told the news outlet. While celebrating her birthday with loved ones at a retirement community in Hickory last Thursday, she was surprised with a WSSU graduation cap and gown along with an invitation to walk across the stage during their May 10 commencement ceremony. Johnson says she’s humbled by the honor and her family members are nothing short of proud. “That’s going to be probably the highest honor of her life,” said her son David Johnson . “The fact that she gets to graduate now, after all this time, is going to melt her heart. She deserves it.” WSSU Chancellor Elwood Robinson says the university is inspired by her journey and is excited to give her this special opportunity 70 years later. Congresswoman Virginia Foxx recently paid homage to Johnson for her service, impact, and influence in North Carolina on the U.S. House Floor. Chelsie Kryst Wins Miss USA 2019; Internet Falls In Love

We might have a full-blown pageant enthusiast in the White House , but even so, beauty-based competitions no longer occupy a place at the forefront of our national consciousness. Every once in a while, however, a contestant comes along that captures the hearts and minds of the American public. On Thursday night, 28-year-old attorney Chelsie Kryst was crowned Miss USA 2019. What might be even more impressive, however, is that she managed to win over even the most cynical tweeters. Chelsie was crowned by her predecessor, Miss USA 2018 Sarah Rose Summers, in a ceremony hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey. Pageant experts say she likely secured her victory with her articulate response when asked to describe millennials: “I would say that my generation is innovative,” Kryst told the judges. “I’m standing here in Nevada, in the state that has the first majority female legislature in this entire country. Mine is the first generation to have that forward-looking mindset that has inclusivity, diversity, and strength and empowered women,” she added. “I’m looking forward to continued progress with my generation.” The recipient of both a law degree and an MBA from Wake Forest University, Kryst is a civil rights litigation attorney who’s licensed to practice law in both South Carolina and North Carolina. She’s also a former Division I athlete, having competed in track and field during her college years. If you’re already blown away and wondering how Kryst has managed to cram all of this into a single lifetime, buckle in because there’s more to come. Chelsie is also the founder and chief contributor of the fashion site White Collar Glam. “Blogging about fashion in the workplace is important to me because I want women to be armed for the workplace in clothing that will put us in the best possible position to achieve success,” she says. With her win at the Miss USA competition, Kryst is now set to represent America in the Miss Universe pageant held later this year. She says she intends to put her legal career on hold and move to New York City in preparation. That’s also a good excuse to dodge the White House invitation that’s heading her way as we speak. “No time for Big Macs, Mr. President! I have a competition to prepare for!”

Humble Harvardite: Aoki Lee Simmons Credits Mom Kimora For Teaching Her An Extra Hard Lesson On Humility

Source: Rob Rich/ WENN / WENN Aoki Lee Simmons Admits She Let Harvard Acceptance Get To Her Head Just a few weeks ago we were congratulating Aoki Lee Simmons for being admitted to Harvard, but it appears that she allowed her new Ivy League status to go to her head. Earlier this week Aoki posted an essay on humility, revealing her mother had to take her down a notch because her big brains were giving her a HUGE head…. View this post on Instagram A short essay on humility, for someone trying their best to have some #spreadkindness (make sure you swipe cause if you don’t the essay makes no sense ) Love yourself, admit your mistakes, and grow like the awesome tree you are! #reflect #foodforthought A post shared by Aoki Lee Simmons (@aokileesimmons) on Apr 30, 2019 at 9:37pm PDT “I was more Harvard than John Harvard himself,” Aoki recalls, “and I was excited out of my mind, I was dabbing, I was whipping, I was Milly rocking, I was singing the fresh prince theme song….. Until my mom took me down a peg with lecture on humility, being a braggart and attracting the evil eye. My reaction was horrendous to ay the least, I pouted, I teared up, I accused her of being jealous, I accused her of not understanding how the college process works (hint: she totally did since she supported me and my sister through it and went to a fantastic college herself). I went off to my room to rage about how my mom ruins everything and kills my vibes and all those other teen complaints. I called my Dad to complain about how unfair my mom was being, and he told me he’d been wanting to say what she said for months. Which shocked me because I usually count on my Dad to be on my side, so hearing that confirmed the worst, my mom might be right. So then I started crying, really really hard.” Sounds a wee bit spoiled brattish — but at least she’s admitting she was wrong. We also loved that Aoki opened up about being disappointed about being deferred at Yale. We think it’s so great that Aoki realized the error of her ways AND that her mother kept it real with her. There are far too many insufferable little privileged princesses running around Beverly Hills whose mothers encourage that behavior. It’s a great picture of the kind of mom Kimora is riiiight?! When is the last time you needed a friend or family member to help you stay grounded?

Idris proposed to Sabrina months before at a private screening for his movie Yardie out of fear he would have to wait until after Valentine’s Day to pop the question. “It was like two days before Valentine’s and I had this ring in my pocket, it was burning a hole,” Idris explained to Ellen DeGeneres. “And then Valentine’s came and she had to fly somewhere, so there was a likelihood I wasn’t going to see her on Valentine’s Day. So I made this movie, and Sab was on the set every day. She knew the whole crew. So at the screening, it was a private screening for the cast and crew, and I just dropped to one knee. It was very nerve-wracking.” Congrats to the lovely couple. RELATED STORIES: Jumped The Broom! Bossip Exclusive: Shannon Sharpe Talks Inspiration To Join Home Depot’s Retool Your School Campaign, Gives $500,000 To 10 HBCU’s

Source: Nigel Degraff / Nigel Degraff Shannon Sharpe Talks Home Depot Retool Your School HBCU ‘s are the pride of Black academia in America and often times they are not as privileged to have the funding that other PWI’s do. Fortunately, companies like Home Depot are not only aware of that issue, but they’re willing to do something about it. Monday afternoon in Atlanta, Shannon Sharpe, Rickey Smiley, and Laz Alonso linked up with the good folks at Home Depot for the $500,000 giveaway finale of the company’s Retool Your School campaign. Source: Nigel Degraff / Nigel Degraff Nine HBCU’s were awarded $50,000 a piece to rejuvenate parts of the campus that are in need. In order to receive the money, each college had to come up with a campaign to tally the most votes from consumers and one school secured the bag with the first ever “Campaign of the Year Award”. BOSSIP got a chance to speak to Super Bowl Champion and NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe at the event and got some insight on how he got involved and what his HBCU, Savannah State University, means to him: BOSSIP : How did you first get involved with Home Depot Retool Your School? Shannon Sharpe : Anytime it’s something to help historically Black college, I want to be involved. I went to an HBCU understand the economic hardships that a lot of these institutions face and Home Depot is doing a really good thing today. The Shannon Sharpe you see here was cultivated at Savannah from 1986-1989 I had some great professors and doctors who cared about me and help me find out about myself. This is my chance to pay Savannah State back and those professors who took time to instill wisdom and knowledge in me. I wish we could have a $20 million endowment like Harvard but this is a really good opportunity for myself, Rickey (Smiley) who went to Alabama State, to give back. I don’t think a lot of people realize that I went to an HBCU. Most times they assume if you went to the NFL or played professional sports that you went to Notre Dame or Michigan or Nebraska or something like that. BOSSIP : What advice would you give high school athletes who want to play professionally but are afraid that they won’t get the exposure at an HBCU that they would at a PWI? SS : When I went to Savannah State my college coach, Bill Davis, God rest his soul, told me “Son, if you’re good, they’ll find you.” Because I was gonna transfer to the University of Miami, but I believed I was that good. I believed the NFL would find me. I believed that once I got to the NFL I would show that my skill set was as good or better than all those guys. I’m a “prove it” type of guy, ok, you don’t have to believe me. Source: Nigel Degraff / Nigel Degraff None of this would be happening without Home Depot Senior Marketing Manager Melissa Brown. Her vision to make this campaign a success and her love of HBCUs has created an incredible opportunity for our beloved schools to look their best and represent themselves proudly. Special shout out to the Westlake High School marching band who pulled up to keep the packed auditorium entertained.
