The Bachelor Recap: "You Don’t Microwave Relationships"

Colton Underwood went up against his greatest obstacle to date on The Bachelor this week. No, not a woman’s bra clasp. We’re talking about the fathers of his potential wives, as Colton traveled to the hometowns of his final four and met their loved ones on this intense installment. “I didn’t have a strong initial opinion of Colton because I don’t like to draw judgment to quickly,” Matt said, adding: “I could tell Colton was being affectionate with Cassie. I don’t know if that’s what he does with all the girls he goes out with. We don’t know him. He seemed like a … guy.” That much is true. We can verify. Things only get more uncomfortable when Cassie sits down with her father and he questioned the romance. “I’m not dumb! You have to know I’m being smart about this whole thing,” she said. “I just want you to trust me.” Later, when Colton asked for permission to propose… he was REJECTED. “I think that a lifelong commitment, that’s big and shouldn’t be taken at all lightly because it is forever in my opinion,” the very well-reasoned father said. “Too often I think it’s done without enough thought. As far as the hand in marriage, that would be a premature blessing.”

Dean Unglert: Colton Underwood Will Be the Worst Bachelor EVER!

Dean Unglert is best known for having made a self-admitted a$$ out of himself on Bachelor on Paradise . But the ABC personality is here with a dire warning for anyone who is excited about Colton Underwood as the network’s next Bachelor… … and that warning is this: Underwood is about to make a major a$$ out of the show in general! In a manner of speaking, that is. “I love Colton, don’t get me wrong, but [he’s] not my Bachelor,” Unglert told Entertainment Tonight at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Festival at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, adding: “He’s a very nice person… He’s well-intentioned. He is beautiful.” Alright! Great! So… what is Unglert’s objection to Underwood being named The Bachelor ? “I just think it’s going to be a dumpster fire.” Oh. Okay then. Underwood finished in third place on the most recent season The Bachelorette. He is famously a virgin , although not for religious reasons. Colton has simple said on numerous occasions that he’s waiting for the right person with whom he wants to knock boots for the first time. Specifically, what is Unglert’s beef with Underwood? He’s a little young. He’s younger than me,” Unglert explained to ET, expounding as follows: “He might be more advanced in his life than I am, but I don’t necessarily see him marrying the woman that he chooses… I don’t think he knows exactly what he wants.” This may be true, of course. But it’s unclear why Dean would say this about Colton. If anything, Underwood appears to be taking the whole idea of finding the right woman as seriously as anyone can. The guy hasn’t even had sex yet because he wants to be sure! Unglert himself was once a frontrunner for The Bachelor… until he got himself involved in an intense and explosive love triangle on Bachelor in Paradise Season 4. And he at least says here that he would not any better as a Bachelor than he predicts Underwood will be. “I imagine Colton’s season going the same way mine would [have], where he wants to do right by everyone and wants no one to hate him and that’s going to just go ahead and bite him right ahead in the butt,” Unglert said in this interview. “I’d be a horrible Bachelor for the same reasons Colton would be horrible and will be horrible.” Fair enough. Unglert concludes by offering up better options he thinks ABC should have gone with for its next Bachelor. “It should’ve been Jason, it should’ve been Blake, it should’ve been Ben, maybe Nick again. It could’ve been Peter,” he says. Do you agree? Or are you actually looking forward to Colton Underwood as The Bachelor, especially that REALLY awkward fantasy suite episode? Bachelor in Paradise Recap: Becca is Back!!!

The Colton and Tia Show continued on ABC on Monday night. By which we mean Bachelor in Paradise, of course, but early installments of Season 5 have focused heavily on television’s most famous virgin and the woman he briefly dated a long time ago. Early on this week, Chris, Nick and Jordan confronted Colton Underwood after he came back from his date with Tia. Was he really open to a renewed romance with his quasi ex? Yes, Colton told the fellas, but he was also still exploring other bikini-clad options while he pondered this possibility. Underwood just wanted to “figure things out,” he said for the 972nd time. Colton also noted that he couldn’t simply turn his feelings for Tia back on after being in love with Becca Kufrin and pursuing her for two months. See, these are the challenges that face the men who go straight from The Bachelorette to Bachelor in Paradise. It isn’t easy, folks. Fast forward a short bit and Tia got irritated with Colton when she realized he was flirting with Angela, concerned he was just keeping her on the side for whenever he felt giving her attention. Afraid she’d end up like Dean and Kristina, Tia stood up for herself to Underwood. Playing all innocent and trying to be honest, Colton told Tia he intended to talk to other women…  but he didn’t know what he wanted. (This is sort of the entire point of the series, right?) However, Tia wanted for Colton to be jealous of her smooch with Chris — and when he didn’t really seem to care, she said she had enough. She refused to stay in the situation because she knew she deserved something wonderful, something Colton was not providing. So… did Colton survive the night? He didn’t get Tia’s rose and he struggled with Angela, but then Bibiana swooped in and saved the hunky football player. The next day, Becca paid the women a visit. She was on hand to offer them advice, but her presence caused Colton to break down in tears, forced to relive the heartbreak that resulted from her elimination of him a few months prior. Seeing Becca brought back all these difficult memories, as the episode concluded with Kufrin making her way over to the man she sent packing on The Bachelorette. Elsewhere this week… – Kenny took Krystal on a wrestling date, despite the fact that she’d swapped spin with Kevin the evening before. – Kenny then got in the ring and showed off some impressive moves, and the two later connected over their experiences on two-on-one dates. – Back at the beach, Kevin grew tired of having concerns over his relationship with Krystal. He therefore decided to pursue other women. – He and Astrid hit it off in an unexpected matter and before we knew it… they were kissing and holding hands! – David warned Annaliese about Jordan, which made her anxious, yet her nerves were calmed a bit when Jordan arranged a romantic dinner on the beach for the two of them. – They made out and she gave him her rose later in response. – John and Kendall also kissed this week, but the latter actually gave Joe her rose, while Angela handed hers to John. – Finally, Nick failed to win Chelsea over and our beloved Wills went home roseless. Can ABC just go ahead and make him The Bachelor already ?!? View Slideshow: The Bachelor 2019: Who Will It Be?!?

Bachelor in Paradise Recap: Colton and Tia Are Awkwardly Reunited!

We were promised hookups, tears, and feuds in the Season 5 trailer for Bachelor in Paradise . And it looks like they’ve already begun to deliver. Colton’s long-awaited reunion with Tia Booth was a lot more complicated than either of them had imagined. And even though there’s now a gang of stars determined to take down Colton, this couple is only part of the drama. … First we have to talk about Tia Booth and Colton Underwood. Or, rather, about just Tia — because Colton wasn’t there yet. That’s right. Producers are messy b–ches who live for drama (literally, it’s their livelihood), so they brought Tia in before Colton arrived … and they gave her a date card. Don’t get us wrong, Tia totally had Colton on her mind. It had been months — she revealed that they hadn’t gotten to chat since The Bachelorette . But Tia’s no fool — she had the date card and, hey, Chris was right there. To be fair to Chris, he went on this date with Tia with the impression that Colton was a thing of the past for her. At the risk of sounding like a gossiping 11-year-old, we report that the two of them totally made out . She even said “Colton who?” while they were kissing, which is … a great way to tell the person you’re kissing that you are, in fact, thinking about someone else. Of course, as soon as this thing was Chris was underway, Colton arrived. Because of course that’s how they timed it. Producing a reality series is a genuine art form, folks. Colton was also given a date card right off the bat. After what we imagine was some gentle prodding from producers, he did speak to some of the other fine young women in Paradise. But he did, of course, hit things off with Tia again — for the first time in nearly half a year. They kissed, and Tia was clearly over the moon. Colton wants to figure out what this situation really means for him. Ah, Grocery Store Joe. We know from previews that he gets into conflict with Leo, but right now, he’s living his best life and enjoying flirtations with just about every woman in Paradise. Joe likes Tia, but Tia likes Colton (and liked Chris, however briefly). Krystal likes Joe, but Joe likes Kendall. This, as we know, will lead to Leo calling him a “Grocery Store B–ch” which sounds like a turn-of-the-century insult that a farmer would hurl at a city-slicker. Krystal also likes Kevin, so we’ll keep our eyes on that as it develops. Speaking of Kevin, he still has some sore feelings about his breakup with Ashley Iaconetti and her abrupt engagement to Jared. Let’s see, what else? Chris is teaming up with Nick and Jordan to take down Colton, which sounds totally plausible if they’re sitcom characters or supervillains but is otherwise super weird to hear from adult ment. Not as weird as Chris calling himself “Goose,” but still weird. Especially since they’re (sort of) the “Goose Gang.” No part of that is not awkward. This is only the beginning of the drama, of course. There’s so much more to follow — including a lot of tears. View Slideshow: Bachelor in Paradise Season 5: Meet the Gorgeous Cast!

‘Survivor: One World’ Post-Mortem: What Have We Learned?

MTV News teams up with former ‘Survivor’ player Rob Cesternino to cover Kim’s win, Colton’s controversy, the future of the game and more. By Josh Wigler Kim Spradlin Photo: CBS on Sunday, concluding with the rightful victory of bridal-shop owner Kim Spradlin . After running multiple alliances and winning four immunity challenges (among other accomplishments), Kim’s status as one of the all-time greatest “Survivor” winners can’t be denied. But even though the best player won the game, does that mean “One World” was one of the better seasons in “Survivor” history? Not necessarily — certainly not if you’re asking season villain Colton Cumbie, who declared during the live “Survivor” reunion that “One World” got boring once he was medically evacuated from the game. Did Kim deserve to win? Should she play again? Was Colton’s assessment of a lackluster “Survivor” season on point? We tackled all of these questions and more in our final “One World” post-game with two-time contestant Rob Cesternino . Thanks for joining us all season long, Rob! MTV : Kim Spradlin, your girl and mine, took home the win on Sunday night. I don’t think anybody was surprised to see that happen, but I’m definitely happy with the outcome. I’m assuming you’re pleased as well? Rob Cesternino : I was very happy to see Kim win the game. I think she gave one of the most dominating performances ever by a “Survivor” player, and I think Kim is, from a historical “Survivor” perspective, the only true alpha female to have won the game. That’s impressive. MTV : You wouldn’t put [‘Fans vs. Favorites’ winner] Parvati Shallow in that category? Cesternino : Parvati is a bit of a different animal in that she used her sexuality to her advantage. I’m certainly not complaining about that — every “Survivor” player is different. But Kim didn’t seduce Troyzan , or any of the guys, to get what she wanted and to get to the end. She used the same tactics that Boston Rob might use, or what any of the traditional male powerhouses would do to win the game. I think that was very interesting about Kim’s performance. Midway through the finale, when Kim got rid of Alicia and then decided to not bring Christina to the final three, I was yelling at the TV, “Kim, what are you doing? These people are so much easier to beat!” But then mid-sentence I realized, “You know what? It doesn’t matter what she does. She’s winning no matter what!” I think Kim felt like, “Why overthink this? I’m winning if I go with Chelsea and Sabrina. I’m winning if I go with Alicia and Christina. Why have a card that people can play against me — that I betrayed my true friends in the game?” Kim came to this realization about three episodes ago, I think. Her win was a fait accompli . Any other outcome would have been greatly unsatisfying. MTV : Let’s look back a bit. I don’t imagine there’s a lot that Colton ever said that you or I would agree with, with the possible exception of one comment he made at the finale: The season got boring once he left. Do you think that’s fair? Was “One World” without Colton a bit of a bore? Cesternino : I think it was. Colton, for all of the horrible things he was saying (which gave us plenty to talk about), was the pre-Kim mastermind of this season. He was the one sending the guys to tribal council. He was the one pulling all of the strings and going back to work with the women. So at least he was adding something to this season. When you lost him, a lot of people were just sheep to Kim for the rest of the season. That can be boring to watch. MTV : Did you buy Colton’s apology at the finale? Cesternino : I follow Colton on Twitter , and I don’t think he’s changed at all from being on “Survivor.” I think if he truly changed, I think you would have seen a much different person [at the finale] than the person who was on “Survivor.” I mean, all Survivors say right after the show, “Oh my god, ‘Survivor’ changed me so much.” I don’t buy it. I don’t think that “Survivor” really changes people. I think that true life-altering events change people, or time changes people. In the six months or whatever since they filmed this, I don’t think Colton or any of the players in the game have truly changed. MTV : Do you think we’ll see him play again? Cesternino : I thought Jeff Probst had said that Colton would never play again, but I’ve also read recently that he’s softening that stance . I do think that Colton will play again, but probably not for a while. With these larger-than-life returning players, their best friend is time. Had Russell Hantz gone back on the show now as opposed to a season after “Heroes vs. Villains,” I think he would have fared better in the game. Time is the friend of the high-profile “Survivor” player, because the more people who come onto the show, they don’t really remember what [previous players] did. The best thing that happened to Russell was Colton. The best thing that will happen to Colton is Jimmy Hamburger or whoever the next “Survivor” villain is. That will make people forget about Colton. MTV : Looking ahead to next season, Probst revealed that the twist for “Survivor Philippines” is that three formerly med-evaced players are coming back to the game. What do you think about that? Cesternino : I think more so than those people returning to the game, I like the idea where they’re going with [three] tribes of six people. When you look back at the past three or four seasons, people have made alliances of five on basically the first day of the game, and those five people have tended to be the final five, or at least five of the final six. The game is becoming a little too predictable, so it’s time to shake things up a little bit so that on the first day you can’t say “This is the five, we’re going to be the final five.” These players will have to adjust their plans and work with people on the other tribes to get to the end of the game. MTV : I love the three-tribe format, which they’ve only done on “All-Stars.” Then again, you might have a different opinion… Cesternino : Well, I’m personally biased against the three-tribe system, since it didn’t work out so well for me on “All-Stars.” [ Laughs ] I do think it probably lends to a better overall game, but you can lose some good people early on if the right two or three people get together and call the shots on a six-person group. MTV : Going back to the topic of returning players, the identities of these three former contestants are still under wraps. But I’m sure we’ll see another “All-Stars” variation at some point in the future. Kim has certainly proven herself as an All-Star. When I spoke with Kim , she said she’d be up for returning. I know she told you the same thing in your interview with her. How do you think she’d do if she went back another time? Cesternino : I think Kim would do very well on an “All-Stars” season. Here’s the thing about Survivors: they don’t necessarily target winners. They target who gets the most publicity and the most press. Russell isn’t targeted because he’s a two-time finalist; he’s targeted because he gets the most air time. One of the biggest things that helped Sandra, who is a two-time winner, is that nobody thinks to get rid of her because she won; they’d get rid of Sandra if she dominated the air time, which never really happened. I bet she would do very well again. For Kim, it’s the same situation. Survivors resent the people who get the most publicity and air time, and that’s not necessarily Kim. I think she’d do well in an “All-Stars” season, because people wouldn’t view her as that kind of a threat. MTV : Let’s wrap this up by looking at the season overall. What should the “Survivor” powers that be learn from “One World”? What lessons should they take away from this year? Cesternino : That’s a great question. [ Pauses ] I think what the “Survivor” powers that be need to learn the most is to really take a look at the people they’re putting on the show, and making sure that everybody going out there is armed with at least the basic knowledge of how the game works. We’re going into “Survivor 25.” Every contestant needs at least a crash course in how alliances work, what to do if you’re not in the bottom of the alliance. I wish we had more people who really knew how to play the game before going out there, and not people learning on the fly. You wouldn’t throw people on “Jeopardy” or “Wheel of Fortune” if they don’t know the rules of the game. Why are we putting people on “Survivor” who don’t know the rules of the game thirteen years after it’s been on the air? Previously On MTV News’ “Survivor” coverage:

American Idol Results: Another Surprise?

After two performances from each of the contestants on Wednesday – along with a song tonight by Kris Allen and a tribute to Dick Clark – it came down to a bottom three of Hollie Cavanagh, Elise Testone and, for the first time so far, Colton Dixon. And the unlucky eliminate-ee? COLTON DIXON! “I need to apologize. I wasn’t myself last night and I get it,” Dixon said with class and grace upon hearing the news. What do you think, THGers? Did America get it right? Should Colton have been sent packing?

Reed Grimm Moves, Drums Like Jagger on American Idol

Reed Grimm kicked off the first live American Idol show with serious energy. Or serious drumming, we should say. Indeed, the confident contestant didn’t just show off his Jagger-like moves in this Adam Levine cover; he also demonstrated his versatility – drawing comparisons to Casey Abrams in the process – by moving around on stage and taking on a drum set at one point. It was different and entertaining, that’s for sure. Was it on par vocally with Phillips Phillips ? No. But we expect Grimm to advance to the finals. Will you be voting for him?
