Colbert (Briefly) Breaks Character in Testimony before Congress

Stephen Colbert mostly yucked it up during his congressional testimony today, but towards the end, Democrat Judy Chu actually got him to break his faux-pundit facade. After relating the story of a worker overcome by heat stroke, but unable to find medical help, she asked Colbert why he had chosen to tackle the migrant worker topic. Colbert took a moment to collect himself, and then, with a stammer he said, “I… I like talking about people who don’t have any power.” (See video from CNN.) “This seems like one of the least powerful groups of people in the United States are migrant workers who come and do our work and don’t have any rights as a result.” Then the comedian actually quoted the Bible non-ironically saying, “You know, whatsoever you do for the least of my brothers—and these seem like the least of our brothers right now. … Migrant workers suffer and have no rights.” Full testimony video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6kKlnVl3UE added by: Future_America

Uranium Rush Prompts Grand Canyon Fears

A new “gold rush” is under way in the American West, but this time the prospectors are out for another metal: uranium. The Grand Canyon region in the US state of Arizona holds one of the nation's largest concentrations of high grade uranium, the fuel for nuclear power. As global demand for nuclear power has increased so has interest in the metal and, across the south-west, companies are seeking permission to restart uranium mining. In the US, President Barack Obama has called for an increase in nuclear power to help reduce the country's dependence on foreign oil. The US government is currently weighing the costs and benefits of mining, with Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva proposing a ban on mining near the Grand Canyon. But with the increase in uranium exploration come concerns about the future of the Grand Canyon, a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of America's foremost natural wonders. And Native American populations living near uranium mines fear exploration could contaminate their drinking water. For now, the sole active uranium mine near the Grand Canyon's northern rim is run by Denison Mines Corporation, a Canadian firm. The Arizona 1 mine employs 30 miners, and the firm says it goes to great lengths to protect them in the hazardous environment. Among other precautions, large fans pump clean air into the mine and suck out most of the radioactive radon gas, while workers spray water across the site to keep down potentially harmful dust. The firm also says past accidents were swiftly and effectively cleaned up. ****************************************!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On a recent trip into the mine, none of the miners wore masks, and their hands and face were caked with uranium ore. “It washes off,” miner Cody Behuden, 28, told the BBC while licking his ore-caked lips. Vice-president of US operations Harold Roberts said the miners were under no danger from ingesting uranium. *************************************** added by: toyotabedzrock

Mr. Colbert Goes To Washington

Scroll down for a live-blog of the hearing Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert testified before Congress today about immigration during a hearing called “Protecting America's Harvest.” Colbert appeared with United Farm Workers (UFW) President Arturo S. Rodriguez before the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law. In August, the comedian spent a day working at a corn and vegetable farm in New York state after Rodriguez appeared on his show to discuss UFW's “Take Our Jobs” campaign. The effort is intended to debunk the theory that undocumented immigrants are taking jobs away from American citizens and highlight the fact the nation's food supply is dependent on these farm workers. Andy Richter Finally Over ‘Bad Breakup’ With NBC

It’s taken 6 months and a 30-city comedy tour, but Andy Richter is finally over his Tonight Show heartbreak. “It’s like a bad breakup,” Richter told Variety . “Once you get over it, you don’t want to dwell.” It also helps that the comedian — who says he never would have abandoned Conan O’B rien after such an “unnatural ending,” unlike Max Weinberg — has a more cooperative network behind him. “[TBS] has been nothing but supportive. We can do whatever we want and be ourselves.” [ Variety ]

Jerry Seinfeld: Lady Gaga is a Jerk and I Hate Her

“This woman is a jerk. I hate her.” – Jerry Seinfeld on Lady Gaga While the comedian was (partially) joking in an interview with New York’s WFAN radio, he’s definitely not gaga over the singer’s recent baseball game antics. “I can’t believe that they put her in my box, which I paid for,” Seinfeld said, referring to Lady Gaga’s bizarre, profanity-laced meltdown June 10 at Citi Field. Gaga showed up during the fifth inning of the day game between the Mets and Padres and was furious that her front-row seats were close to photographers. Instead of sitting, she vanished into a lower-deck concourse, only to reappear in a little bit later in the empty luxury box owned by Seinfeld, a big Mets fan. “You give people the finger and you get upgraded? Is that the world we’re living in now?” he said . “How old is the finger? How’d it even get to be the finger?” Oh, and what is the DEAL with wearing a bra as a top? “She is talented,” said Seinfeld. “I don’t know why she’s doing this stuff. I don’t know what these young people think or how they promote their careers.” He then expounded on her antics: “I’m not one of these all-publicity-is-good people. People talk about you need exposure – you could die of exposure.” Well, there’s one person who won’t be buying Gaga’s new album . When the WFAN host pointed out to Seinfeld that Gaga was at the rival Yankees’ game on Friday, Seinfeld said, “Oh please, wake me when it’s over.” “So you’ve had enough of her?” Steve Somers asked Jerry. “Yeah,” Seinfeld said. “I wish her the best,” but then added in one final dig at Lady Gaga, “you take one ‘A’ off of that and you’ve got gag.” Not one of the best Seinfeld quotes ever … but good.
