Pop Culture Moment #1: Chappelle’s Show Premieres

Read more here:

On January 22, 2003 Black television changed forever. Comedian Dave Chappelle premiered his late night sketch comedy show on Comedy Central filling a void in late night television that had been vacated by the likes of “The Aresenio Hall Show” and  “In Living Color.” But Dave’s irreverent humor was in a class all its own. Fact: The Clayton Bigsby character was based on Dave’s own grandfather The D.C native’s affinity for hip-hop and fearless approach to sensitive topics made him an instant hit. Whether it was “The Racial Draft” where Tiger Woods became Black or the classic Charlie Murphy’s Truth Hollywood Stories with the late Rick James Chappelle took made sketch comedy feel like oral history. In fact, mere phrases from the show (“I’m Rick James, bitch!” ) have become ubiquitous, embedding themselves into the American lexicon. Add performances from some of hip-hops best like Kanye West, Erykah Badu and Snoop and Chappelle’s Show was must-see TV. Sales of season 1 and 2 on DVD made it one of the most successful of all time, beating out The Simpsons in 2005. Unfortunately, Chappelle would take his talents back to Ohio and Season 3 never officially materialized. Fans still pine away for the return of Chappelle to TV and Chris Rock recently hinted that the two may tour together.  In any respect we need him back. “He was the new generation Eddie Murphy,” says DJ Rob Flow , who walked away with a jar or Pomade and a pack of Newports after winning the “I Know Black People” contest on Chappelle. “Every generation has a black comedian that expresses a particular type of angle on the culture. In ’70s we had Richard Pryor. ’80s we had Eddie Murphy. He was definitely a part of hip-hop culture and he loved conscious artists. He was important to the culture for that.  He ended up really pushing the racial lines and that’s what freaked everybody out. It got really popular and he realized white people aren’t laughing with us.  That’s my theory. I think that’s why he left. But he needs to come back and finish the thought. Get white people to laugh with us, not at us.” Chappelles Show True Hollywood Stories – Rick James Pt. 1 www.comedycentral.com Buy Chappelle’s Show DVDs Black Comedy True Hollywood Story Throughout the month of February TheUrbanDaily.com will be celebrating 25 of the biggest  moments in pop culture, sponsored by Gillette .

‘Workaholics’ ‘Constantly Stimulated’ On First Date

Comedy Central stars share their silly slacker laughs with MTV News. By Rya Backer Cast of “Workaholics” Photo: MTV News There’s no normal way go on a date with four men simultaneously. That goes without saying. So, imagine going out with four guys who make a living rapping about what it’s like to be a wizard (while in equally mystical costumes, natch) and have popularized an observational comedy game called “poop dollar.” This is how I spent one recent afternoon at the Greenwich Village Country Club playing mini-golf with the cast of “Workaholics” for the most-recent edition of First Date. On the show, three men (Anders Holm, Blake Anderson and Adam DeVine, playing Anders Holmvik, Blake Henderson and Adam DeMamp , respectively) spend their days at a middle-management gig at a telemarketing company. During their downtime, they get really wasted and go on incredible, hilarious adventures, sometimes with their friend, Karl Hevacheck (played by … wait for it … Kyle Newacheck), where things get weird — but rest assured, everything just happens to be OK in the end. The way they were discovered almost echoes the optimistic slacker vibe the show lends: “I met Kyle and Blake at community college. Improv class, day one … met ‘Ders at the Second City,” DeVine explained about the origins of their very real-life friendship. “And then we started making Internet comedy videos, and Comedy Central was like, ‘We like how you guys aren’t popular, but you have a voice, have a take,’ and gave us a show.” The franchise has long been centered on new music acts, but since the show’s premiere, a small sect of us at MTV News have taken it upon ourselves to spread its decidedly sophomoric gospel. The “Workaholics” brand of humor extends far beyond their show, as they attempted to out-funny each other’s answers to the Date questions. In regard to what a typical first date for them is like, DeVine bluntly replied, “For me, personally, just hard-core sex from the get-go … smashin’, beatin’-it-up sex.” His co-star Anderson (who recently got into a pretty unfunny fall) retorted with a first-date plan that’s too hot to write here — just know that his statement wrapped with, “I’m constantly stimulated.” And for those two-odd hours we shared on the course, it’s safe to say we all were. ‘It’s weird when people say it’s an accident, ’cause I kinda meant to do it,’ Blake Anderson says of stunt gone wrong in MTV’s ‘First Date.’ By Rya Backer Cast of “Workaholics” Photo: MTV News As one of the co-stars of Comedy Central’s “Workaholics,” Blake Anderson has made his way into the hearts and televisions of many an American as Blake Henderson, the goofy member of the show’s trio who’s not above spending his week’s paycheck on a coat that looks like a bear, or talking his friends into foregoing their Thanksgiving plans to spend a weekend at a Hedonism resort in Jamaica. So when we sat down with Anderson following the castmembers’ “First Date” shoot, which premieres Tuesday on MTV.com, it was refreshing to know that his quirks and sense of humor — and those of his fellow Workaholics — are not just a stage persona. We asked for details on how he recently made headlines jumping off a roof and landing (not especially gracefully) onto a Comedy Central-branded beer pong table, reportedly fracturing his spine in the process. Oh, and Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator was there too — having a good laugh at Anderson’s expense. “It’s weird when people say it’s an accident, ’cause I kinda meant to do it,” he explained about the fall. “I was drunk and it was stupid. Don’t jump off roofs into hard surface areas.” His castmates (they are all good friends in real life), however, had a different perspective on the situation: “It was all CGI, it was a ploy to get more viewers. Thank you for viewing,” explained Adam DeVine, whose “Workaholics” character, Adam Demamp, was named one of MTV News’ Top 50 TV Characters of 2011 . The carnage, however, appears to be very real, with Anderson sporting a fresh scar from the incident on the left side of his back. Though DeVine once again refutes its veracity, asking, “… or is it CGI’d?” So exactly what was recent VMA winner Tyler, the Creator doing at his place? “We have those little rugrats runnin’ around at our parties sometimes,” Anderson said of his friendship with Odd Future. Fellow member Taco appeared in the show’s second-season premiere. Despite their ups and downs, so to speak, the groups remain friendly — despite some fighting words from the cast. “You’re not invited anymore, Tyler. And that’s on you, bro,” DeVine exclaimed. “Yeah, go ‘create’ some sh–,” added Anders Holm. You can see more with the cast of “Workaholics” on Tuesday when their episode of “First Date” goes live on MTV.com!

Stephen Colbert, Herman Cain Stump For Votes in South Carolina

Newt, Schmewt. Mitt, Schmitt. Herman Cain dropped out of the presidential race months ago, but that won’t stop Stephen Colbert from rallying for him in advance of today’s primary. The Comedy Central host hit the campus of the College of Charleston Friday, joined by over 3,000 students, a marching band, cheerleaders, and Cain: Stephen Colbert-Herman Cain Rally Colbert, who toyed with running in the South Carolina GOP primary himself, was waylaid by the technicality of not getting his name on the ballot in time. Cain, who abandoned his bid in the fall after a brief surge to the top of the polls, happens to still be on the ballot, so Colbert threw his support to Cain . A gospel choir sang “This Little Light of Mine” before Colbert delivered an address at the “Rock Me Like a Herman Cain: South Cain-Olina Primary Rally.” “Do not sit down!” Colbert said. “There are no chairs. Partly for budgetary reasons, but mostly because I’ll take a standing ovation any way I can get it.” He zinged the frontrunner as such: “The only difference between Mitt Romney and a statue of Mitt Romney is that the statue never changes in position.” Before introducing Cain, he also zinged Rick Santorum. “A Her Man is not the same as a She Male,” Colbert said, according to reports, adding. “I don’t want to frighten any Rick Santorum supporters.” “I have believed in the message of Herman Cain for several days now. I want you to vote for Herman Cain because Herman Cain is me… and he possesses the one thing I don’t think I possibly will ever have: a place on the South Carolina ballot.” Fight on, Stephen and Herman. Fight on.

Stephen Colbert Surges Past Jon Huntsman in South Carolina Primary Poll

Stephen Colbert may not have succeeded in buying the naming rights to the South Carolina Republican primary, but he is polling at a respectable 5 percent. Seriously, he is . That’s tied with Rick Perry and ahead of Jon Huntsman. If Huntsman is hopeful he’ll get a bump after his third-place finish in New Hampshire last night … this is not it. Again, he is trailing comedian Stephen Colbert. The survey, by Public Policy Polling (PPP), puts the Comedy Central anchor, who is not (and was never) running, at an even 5 percent, with Perry. Huntsman has 4 percent. With that projected vote tally, Colbert is in a tie for fifth behind Mitt Romney (30%), Newt Gingrich (23%), Rick Santorum (19%) and Ron Paul (10%), respectively. Admittedly, many of Colbert’s supporters may be Democrats planning to participate in the Palmetto State’s open primary … or just saying his name as a joke. If so, nicely played. Colbert also happens to be a South Carolina native and very involved in politics, albeit in an absurd way. Who knows, if his Colbert Nation Super PAC starts making some key ad buys, maybe he’ll creep into double digits. Watch your back Mitt.

Stephen Colbert Offers $500K For Naming Rights to South Carolina Primary

The South Carolina Republican Party rebuffed a $500,000 donation from Stephen Colbert Thursday because it came with a catch: naming rights to its presidential primary. Colbert, the host of The Colbert Report on Comedy Central, and a native South Carolinan, writes in Columbia’s State newspaper that he was serious – and they agreed. After learning that the cash-strapped South Carolina GOP and local officials were at odds over who would pay for the January 21 Republican primary, Colbert offered a plan. He would subsidize the cost , through his “Colbert Super PAC,” to the tune of $500K. In return, it would become “The Colbert Super PAC South Carolina Republican Primary.” “I said, ‘I can cover that. No strings attached,'” Colbert writes. “Of course, I can’t offer that kind of no-strings-attached-money without getting something in return.” Colbert also wanted to add a non-binding referendum question on the ballot – referring to a controversial remark by Mitt Romney – asking whether “Corporations are people.” Apparently there was some confusion over how seriously this plan was taken, because “The GOP agreed to everything,” according to Colbert … but not the GOP. Executive director Matt Moore says “Stephen Colbert, the private citizen, called out of the clear blue and made an unsolicited offer to help his home state.” “We were intrigued and met with him, but also wary … ultimately we determined it was not in the state party’s best interests to accept Mr. Colbert’s offers.” “Everything was not ‘agreed to.’ We did not sign his contract. Despite our repeatedly saying ‘no,’ Stephen Colbert, the comedian, seems intent on being involved.” Thank goodness for that.

‘Workaholics’ Brings Out Adam DeVine’s ‘Inner Child’

Actor pulls back the curtain on his Adam Demamp, who was just named one of MTV News’ Top 50 TV Characters of 2011. By Rya Backer Blake Anderson, Adam Devine and Anders Holm in “Workaholics” Photo: Comedy Central Adam DeVine is one-third of the sophomoric (and absolutely hilarious) buddy/stoner comedy “Workaholics.” On the Comedy Central show, DeVine plays a character named — wait for it — Adam, a twentysomething with no aspirations other than getting weird with his two best friends when they’re not idling at their generic, low-rung desk jobs at TelAmeriCorp. Since the show’s debut earlier this year, DeVine has created his own catchphrase and graced the audience with such sight gags as becoming a bodybuilder for a day, getting dragged by a car after he’d harpooned its tire and, most shockingly, tucking in a part of his body that … well, we’ll let him explain. Now that MTV News has named DeVine’s Adam Demamp one of the Top 50 TV Characters of 2011 , we caught up with the funnyman to pull back the curtain on his “Workaholics” alter ego: On his favorite scene to shoot : “The bodybuilding episode from season one was probably one of my favorites, only because I’ve always had one of those weird little things in the back of my head saying that if I didn’t want to be an actor and be someone that is an actual human being that can assimilate in society, I would want to be a bodybuilder and just get weirdly tan, grease my muscles, wear a Speedo. So the fact that I got to play one on TV really, really brought the inner child out of me.” Check out our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 21-30, including a depressed meth cook and a football coach with a heart of gold. On his catchphrase, “Oh, I like that” : “I like ‘Oh, I like that’ only because that’s something my dad always said, and I’ve since incorporated it into the show, which he gets a kick out of. It’s all for Mom and Dad. Surprisingly, they love the show. My Thanksgiving was weird: It was all about keeping the turkey ‘tight butthole’ and the string-bean casserole getting my cousins ‘torqued.’ ” On the mangina : “That was one of the things that we were so surprised that they, 1. Let us do, and 2. Let us show it. It was like, we wrote it, thinking they were going to turn it down, and they were like, ‘Well, we can just blur it out.’ And then we shot it, and we sent over a cut to Comedy Central to approve, and we sent over a cut that was un-blurred just for shock value, and they were like, ‘We love it! We’re gonna fight for it! We’re gonna talk to the censors and make sure we can do it!’ There’s a part of me that’s like, ‘Yeah! We beat the censors!’ Then there’s a part of me that’s like, ‘My pubic bone is gonna be exposed to the world.’ And then that part of me got really excited, because I have a really handsome pubic bone. I think it’s a cable-television first. I mean, ‘Frasier’ used to do it all the time, so it’s been on network TV. Niles was always tuckin’ back to impress Roz.” On resembling his television character : “I think Demamp comes out on beer six and then leaves my body at beer 11. I’ll get real wild after beer six to beer 11. And then after my 11th beer, I’ll just get really quiet, whereas Adam Demamp I think would start a house fire.” MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Never Try to Knock a Kid Off a Bike

Do not, for any reason, try to open your car door and knock a kid off a bike. In this video, seen on Comedy Central’s Tosh.0, one smart ass, sitting in the back seat of a moving car, attempted just that, swinging his door open and attempting to derail an unsuspecting biker. It probably seemed like a funny idea at the time. Until karma, or just a car, came from the other direction … Kar(ma) Smashes Into Kid
