Stephen Colbert Defends Helen Thomas By Bashing Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck

Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert on Wednesday defended Helen Thomas’s anti-Semitic remarks by attacking conservative talk radio hosts Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, John Gibson, and Michael Savage. Addressing the comments that led Thomas to resign her position with the Hearst News Service, Colbert said, “Jesus Christ on a matzo cracker, Helen. What were you thinking?” He continued, “You don’t just blurt out racially charged comments on camera.” As pictures of the four conservative talkers appeared on the screen, Colbert quipped, “You do it on your radio show” (video follows with commentary): The Colbert Report Mon – Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30c Helen Thomas’s Reputation www.colbertnation.com Colbert Report Full Episodes Political Humor Fox News Welcome to the Bizarro World of today’s liberal comedian that doesn’t understand the difference between news and opinion, and can’t distinguish a talk radio host from a member of the White House press corps. But this is common for modern day media members who equate anti-Semitic and/or racist comments by folks charged with reporting the news to remarks they find offensive from people on the radio. Making matters worse is the number of Comedy Central viewers that actually rely on Colbert and colleague Jon Stewart as their primary source for information on current events. It would indeed be laughable if it wasn’t so frightening.

O’Reilly Discusses Comedy Central’s ‘JC,’ MRC’s Coalition to Ask Advertisers to Not Support It

On last night’s “O’Reilly Factor,” host Bill O’Reilly and guest analyst Arthel Neville discussed the possibly impending Comedy Central show “JC” – as in Jesus Christ. Given the network’s past treatment of Christianity, the portend for this show is hardly positive. Which is why the Media Research Center has put together a coalition to ask advertisers to publicly pledge to not underwrite/support the show.  Citizens Against Religious Bigotry (CARB) (which Ms. Neville graciously mentioned by name) is made up of many organizations – made up of Christians, Jews and Muslims – who would like to see religion not be the butt of raunchy/tasteless jokes, and who don’t think America’s advertisers should help fund said alleged humor. A petition to advertisers (to be found on the CARB website ) has garnered more than 115,000 signatures thus far. And if you aren’t familiar with how Comedy Central does Christianity, watch this video and you’ll get an idea of what can be expected should JC ever make it to the airwaves.

Tom Cruise To Revisit Les Grossman Role In New Movie

Cruise and Ben Stiller are producing the comedy based on the ‘Tropic Thunder’ and MTV Movie Awards character. By Josh Wigler Les Grossman at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Paramount If you thought Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Michael Cera, Will Smith and the rest of the Hollywood elite were safe from movie-studio exec Les Grossman’s fiery insults and cutthroat business ethics, think again. In a press release issued Wednesday (June 9), Paramount Pictures and MTV Films announced the development of a comedy focused on Grossman, the foul-mouthed movie producer played by Tom Cruise in “Tropic Thunder” and the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . Cruise, Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfield of Red Hour Films are producing the project with “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” screenwriter Michael Bacall tackling the script. Unsurprisingly, the press release phrases the movie’s development as if Grossman were actually a real person — which, of course, he is! Tom Cruise is said to be in talks to portray the media mogul in the film. As for the film’s plot, “Grossman” himself explained: “To quote my great friend Kirk Lazarus, ‘I don’t read the script, the script reads me.’ ” “Les Grossman’s life story is an inspiring tale of the classic human struggle to achieve greatness against all odds,” said Stiller, Grossman’s “Tropic Thunder” co-star. “He has assured me he plans to, quote, ‘F—ing kill the sh– out of this movie and make “Citizen f—ing Kane” look like a piece-of-crap home movie by the time we are done.’ I am honored to be working with him.” Paramount Film Group President Adam Goodman added: “Everything I learned in this business, I’ve learned from Les. I started out as his assistant, and from the first day he threw his desk at me when I got his lunch order wrong, I have loved him like a father. I am forever grateful to Ben and Stuart Cornfield and their ability to secure his highly coveted life rights.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Soccer Academies’ Ugly Side

The new cover story in The New York Times Magazine, “How a Soccer Star is Made,” is a long and detailed article about the intense training that has grown up around youth soccer academies in Europe and what American soccer organizations can learn from their way of doing what has become very big business. [Dutch soccer team] Ajax puts young players into a competitive caldron, a culture of constant improvement in which they either survive and advance or are discarded. It is not what most would regard as a child-friendly environment, but it is one that sorts out the real prodigies — those capable of playing at an elite international level — from the merely gifted. From a very early age — sometimes even before a boy has even started school — these players’ careers are contracted, licensed and traded — or in the typical parlance of the sport, bought and sold. As the New York Times reports: No one pretends that its business is other than what it is. “We sold Wesley Sneijder for a ridiculous amount of money,” [trainer Olav] Versloot said. “We can go on for years based on what he was sold for.” … [British team] Fulham, like Ajax, is often a seller of talent. It recently sold a 20-year-old to Manchester United for seven million pounds, or more than $10 million. “It’s a little ugly talking about the financial terms,” [Coach Huw] Jennings said. “I don’t like to do it. It feels not too far off from the slave trade.” With an estimated 10,000 boys being trained by clubs in England alone, the demand for young players — in quantity, at least — may be greater than the number of interested UK youth. Jennings said that his scouts, in response to the “unsuitability of the indigenous population of Britain” — children who are too sedentary and spend their time with video games — were increasingly focused “on the inner city of London, among Africans, Eastern Europeans and Caribbeans.” Even Drogba’s injury, which may keep him out of the World Cup, won’t stop poor boys who grew up playing soccer in dirt fields from wanting to be like him. For an upcoming episode of Vanguard, “Soccer’s Lost Boys,” I travelled to Africa and Europe to examine the dark side of this growing network of recruitment, and to track down the ambitious young African players whose dreams make them an easy target for shady scouts. Unlike European academies where players pay very little to train, these kids’ families are bilked of their meager savings with promises that their boys could be the next Drogba. What happens after that—boys abandoned along the way, often without any money, papers, or ability to return home to their families—is the tragic, ugly underbelly of the beautiful game. Christian coalition complains Comedy Central’s ‘JC’ offensive

A Christian coalition is complaining Comedy Central's “JC”, a proposed animated series about Jesus Christ living in modern-day New York, is offensive and discriminatory towards Christians. The only problem is that the Coalition Against Religious Bigotry has yet to see a pilot or script, since “JC” is still in development, and might not even find its way on to the cable channel. The Coalition Against Religious Bigotry (CARB) includes right-wing theocrats Brent Bozell (president, Media Research Center), Tony Perkins (president, Family Research Council), Michael Medved (talk radio host), Bill Donohue (president, Catholic League) and Tim Winter (president, Parents Television Council). http://www.examiner.com/x-10853-Portland-Humanist-Examiner~y2010m6d3-Christian-c… added by: unimatrix0

Life & Times of Tim Cancelled — for Now

After two seasons, HBO has pulled the plug on The Life & Times of Tim . But hope isn’t lost for fans of the animated series: Producing company MRC is rumored to have shopped the series to Comedy Central, Adult Swim and TBS. If any HBO cartoon deserves a second life, it’s this one — and I hope the folks at the overrated The Ricky Gervais Show know it. [ Deadline ]

‘Get Him To The Greek’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Hit the road with Russell Brand and Jonah Hill in the ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ follow-up. By Josh Wigler Jonah Hill and Russell Brand in “Get Him To The Greek” Photo: Universal Pictures In “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” Infant Sorrow frontman Aldous Snow had it all figured out: hit singles in the form of “Inside of You” and “We’ve Got to Do Something,” fans from all across the globe and several years of sobriety. But to quote another great musician, the times are a-changing when an off-the-wagon Snow returns in “Get Him to the Greek,” the “Sarah Marshall” spin-off arriving in theaters Friday (June 4). Russell Brand and Jonah Hill take center stage in the comedy about a disgraced rock singer and a budding talent agent looking to stage a glorious comeback. While that’s the film’s basic premise, the story behind the story has several layers. As the comedy arrives in theaters, MTV News is bringing you a cheat sheet to catch you up on everything you need to go “Greek.” Forgetting ‘Sarah’ and Going ‘Greek’ One of the reasons moviegoers latched onto “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” was the onscreen chemistry of Brand as rock god Aldous Snow and Hill as an aspiring musician and Snow-obsessed fan. Apparently, the chemistry didn’t go unnoticed by director Nicholas Stoller and producer Judd Apatow, as they announced a new comedy project re-teaming Brand and Hill just one week following the release of “Sarah Marshall.” That project would eventually become “Get Him to the Greek,” and while Brand was set to reprise his role as Aldous Snow , Hill took on an entirely new character: Aaron Green, a record-company intern who volunteers to escort the down-and-out Snow from his London home to the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles for a comeback concert. Madness, debauchery and hilarity inevitably ensue. The Third Greek Although Hill and Brand present quite the dynamic duo on their own, a third player entered the “Greek” arena in the form of Sean “Diddy” Combs as record-company executive Sergio Roma. “We did a table read, and I thought to myself, ‘I wonder how funny [Diddy’s] going to be and how much help he’s going to need,’ ” Apatow told MTV News in 2009 . “And I found out the answer was none. He needs no help. He was riotously funny. As a man with one skill, I was annoyed that he was also funny. You shouldn’t be allowed to be good at so many things.” Dubbed by Hill as “the McLovin of ‘Get Him to the Greek,’ ” Combs endeared himself to his co-stars with a trip to Las Vegas that Brand described as “a hedonism boot camp.” “[Hanging with Diddy in Vegas] means you don’t get enough sleep, and when you go to a restaurant, it’s noisy, and when you go to a club, it’s noisy, and when you’re in an elevator, it’s noisy,” Brand said of the trip. “Hanging with Diddy is noisy.” Sex, Drugs and Rocky Terrain Having survived the Vegas outing with few scratches to speak of, the “Greek” stars barreled on with production, but neither Brand nor Hill were without their share of hardships during the shoot. Brand, a recovering alcoholic and former drug addict, was faced with revisiting his old demons alongside his character. “I don’t take relapsing very seriously as a possibility in terms of thinking of it as ‘Must not relapse. Must not relapse.’ But it reminded me, ‘Don’t do drugs,’ ” Brand said of his experience playing the drug-addled Snow . “It’s not worth it. Not for me.” For Hill, his difficulties were a bit more transparent … one could even say, well, nude . The comedian was able to overcome the awkwardness of filming his in-the-buff scenes by focusing on the bright side: “I had all sorts of thoughts about waxing or what I should do to prepare. And then eventually, I just, I said, ‘I’m just gonna be free and be me and just sort of, you know, let that happen.’ ” Nudity and old ghosts aside, the point of “Get Him to the Greek” isn’t to dwell on the negative; it’s about laughing and having a good time at the movies. On that front, Hill feels that the mission was accomplished. “This movie, to me, is just a pure weekend night movie,” he said. “You go and have a great time, and it’s so full of energy. It’s a road movie, and it’s hysterical, in my opinion.” Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
