‘The Green Hornet’: The Reviews Are In

Movie is ‘as much a comedy as it is an action movie,’ Cinema Blend’s Josh Tyler writes. By Eric Ditzian Seth Rogen and Jay Chou in “The Green Hornet” Photo: Sony Pictures Seth Rogen might be laughing that throaty, unmistakable laugh of his at the end of this coming holiday weekend. After a hellish development process, a troubling game of release-date musical chairs, and the seemingly collective declaration from the Internet that his movie would suuuuuuck, Rogen’s “Green Hornet” is set to win the upcoming box-office crown. Projections put the superhero action/comedy’s opening haul anywhere from the low $30 million range to the low $40 million range. Whether it hits that higher number — making it the first movie to cross the $40-million opening mark since “Tron: Legacy” in mid-December — might well be decided by word of mouth. Thus far, critics seem to be of two minds: those who just don’t dig how Rogen has transferred his slacker-dude comedic stylings to a whiz-bam-pow action flick, and those who, well, totally dig how much fun that transference turns out to be. Which camp do you fall into? Check out what the critics are saying about “The Green Hornet” and decide for yourself. The Story “Rogen plays Britt Reid, a spoiled and irresponsible twenty-something who inherits an independent Los Angeles newspaper after his father James (Tom Wilkinson) dies under mysterious circumstances. Unprepared for the responsibilities of the job, he commiserates with one of his father’s mechanics, the preternaturally gifted Kato (Jay Chou); but when they’re interrupted by real criminals while trying to deface a statue erected in his father’s honor, the duo decides to launch new careers for themselves as superheroes. Branding his alter ego ‘The Green Hornet,’ Reid uses the newspaper to establish himself as a criminal, hoping to protect his real identity from the authorities; but when an actual crime boss named Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz) believes that the Hornet is horning in on his territory, Reid and Kato find themselves under attack from both crooks and the authorities.” — Todd Gilchrist, Cinematical The Direction “Michel Gondry has crafted an irreverently funny, ultramodern take on the 1930s radio serial, with a vibe so casual you half-expect star Seth Rogen to amble offscreen and put his feet up on the seat next to you. … Gondry is surprisingly well-suited for a big-budget popcorn adventure. While his projects occasionally threaten to float away on a cloud of whimsy, the outlandish requirements of this genre — like explosive action scenes — somehow keep him grounded. At the same time, his sense of humor and acute visual skill turn a cheerfully unfocused superhero flick into an unexpectedly fun ride.” — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News The 3-D “[A] note on the 3-D. It’s good. Bullet casings rain down on our eyebrows. Kato’s kicks fly past our heads. At times, it seems like every possible object in the frame is rendered in 3-D. Which raises the question: Does the paperweight on Rogen’s desk need to be popping out of the frame? It’s an unnecessary contrivance in a movie that’s already made all the right moves.” — Tom Horgen, Minneapolis Star Tribune The Dissenters “The film’s insurmountable problem is that Rogen and Goldberg are committed to the comic notion that Britt is an idiot. This becomes a box that the character and the movie can’t escape. At no point does Britt’s strategy of doing good while pretending to be evil ever reveal itself to be coherent. On the contrary, Rogen’s Green Hornet doesn’t do anybody any good, not even by accident — he just wreaks havoc. Britt is a joke, a parody of a fatuous rich heir. That provides the occasional laugh, as when Britt comes on to his secretary (the long-suffering Cameron Diaz), who loathes him. But when the violence comes, who cares if this fatuous, ineffectual, trouble-making idiot survives?” — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle The Final Word “More important than the story being told here, though, is how much fun the film seems to be having in telling it. … The movie’s packed with fun gadgets and crazy visual effects, some of which are so outside the box that in another film they might seem strange. Here though, most of them work brilliantly because Gondry’s movie never takes itself too seriously. When reality gets in the way of having fun with the moment, ‘The Green Hornet’ is more than happy to ignore it. Gondry’s vision is a perfect fit with the comedic tone of the script, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Their film is as much a comedy as it is an action movie — actually it’s better than that, it’s one of the all too rare modern movies which manages to be both.” — Josh Tyler, Cinema Blend Check out everything we’ve got on “The Green Hornet.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Patton Oswalt Explains ‘Zombie Spaceship Wasteland’ Memoir

‘It kind of leaps around, but it tells a portion of my life,’ comedian tells MTV News. By Rick Marshall Patton Oswalt Photo: MTV News In “Zombie Spaceship Wasteland,” Patton Oswalt’s new essay-driven memoir, the actor/comedian argues that the question of which of those three categories we each fall under decides our destinies and the sort of people we become. Zombies simplify the world around them, Spaceships seek the new, and Wastelands … well, they destroy. For Oswalt, his own answer to that question was a long time coming, but after finishing the book, he’s now certain that he is, indeed, a Wasteland — and he’s not alone. “A lot of comedians are Wastelands,” he writes. “What is stand-up comedy except isolating specific parts of culture or humanity and holding them up against a stark, vast background to approach at an oblique angle and get laughs?” Though it’s the first novel from the geek-friendly actor, Oswalt has dabbled in writing on several occasions, including some recent work in the comic book world that had him scripting stories based on Joss Whedon’s “Firefly” universe (titled “Serenity: Float Out”). With “Zombie Spaceship Wasteland,” however, he turns the focus on himself in a series of short essays — some autobiographical, some fictional — that explore his evolution as a media consumer, creator, and, well, human being. “It kind of leaps around, but it tells a portion of my life,” he told MTV News. “Memories, to me, are more impressionistic rather than ‘This happened, then this happened, then this happened.’ If you think about it, they’re memorized differently depending on what age you were when you had them.” Regularly diverging into lengthy footnotes, off-topic asides and other digressions, “Zombie Spaceship Wasteland” doesn’t follow the conventions of standard autobiographical fare — a fact Oswalt says is a reflection of his own way of thinking and communicating, and something fans of his stand-up comedy will likely find familiar. He even goes so far as to list, at the end of each chapter, everything he did on the Internet while writing that section of the book. “That’s how I talk. When I say things, I’ll digress, so the best way to capture that was with a footnote,” he said of the lengthy notations in each essay. For Oswalt, the difficulty in bringing all the essays together wasn’t so much in finding good material, but deciding which stories to include and how to present them. In one of the longer essays, titled “Victory Tour,” Oswalt presents a diary-style account of the worst gig in his career: a 1994 stint at a comedy club outside Vancouver. In another essay, his memories of an eccentric uncle teach him something about himself and his values. “I had taken those notes so long ago,” he said of the “Victory Tour” chapter. “I didn’t know what I was going to do with them, whether I would turn them into a bit or a graphic novel or something. “The one that was the most satisfying to get down, though, was the one about my Uncle Pete,” he continued. “It got a little bit more real, and I uncovered some things about myself that I didn’t quite realize until I started writing it.” “Zombie Spaceship Wasteland” is on shelves now from Scribner Publishing. ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Star Billy Boyd Marries Ali McKinnon

Actor who played Pippin in trilogy weds Wednesday (December 29). By Terri Schwartz Billy Boyd Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images Love continued to linger in the air Wednesday (December 29) as Billy Boyd, best known as Pippin the hobbit in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Ali McKinnon. Though he earned international fame and legions of fans for a quest for a different One Ring, The Evening Times reports Boyd kept the wedding very small and intimate. Boyd and McKinnon met in 2002 at a pantomime (British winter musical comedy theater) she was appearing in. The two have a 4-year-old son, Jack, and have been living together in Glasgow’s West End for several years. The Evening Times reports the two were married at Oran Mor, just around the corner from their home. The venue sounds like something straight out of Middle Earth, but it’s actually a converted church that was turned into a cultural center including a couple of restaurants and bars, a nightclub and, of course, a beautiful private-events space. Oran Mor wedding coordinator Louise Turner said she’d met with the couple a few times and “they have been lovely to deal with.” She said only 30 friends and family members attended the ceremony, and the reception was planned for about 160. “It’s not a massive bash, and it will be quite intimate,” Turner said. Though the “Rings” cast has stayed close since the premiere of “Return of the King” in 2003, the Times implied that Boyd’s co-stars — including Elijah Wood, Ian McKellan and Orlando Bloom — did not attend the wedding. In addition to his role in the three “Lord of the Rings” films, Boyd won acclaim for his roles in “The Stone of Destiny,” “The Flying Scotsman” and “On a Clear Day.” He was named Britain’s most eligible bachelor, placing ahead of Prince William, who got engaged this year. Send your well-wishes to the couple in the comments section below!

Andrew Garfield Says Tobey Maguire Gave His ‘Spider-Man’ Blessing

‘It was generous of him to reach out and say something, so I’m thankful,’ new Spidey tells BBC News. By Terri Schwartz Andrew Garfield Photo: Jon Furniss/ Getty Images One would expect that there were some hard feelings after Sony dropped their planned “Spider-Man 4” movie early this year and chose instead to pursue a reboot of the franchise following a teenage Peter Parker. But the star of the upcoming “Spider-Man” film, Andrew Garfield, said that isn’t the case. In fact, during an interview with BBC News , Garfield said that, though he still hasn’t met Tobey Maguire, the previous star of the “Spider-Man” franchise has willingly passed the torch to the young British actor. “[Maguire] sent me a lovely message through a mutual friend,” Garfield revealed. “He gave me his support, and it meant a great deal, of course, because part of the reason I love and have continued to love this character was because of his portrayal. To step into those shoes is no mean feat. It was generous of him to reach out and say something, so I’m thankful.” Garfield was cast as Spidey on July 1 after a series of casting rumors . This has been a big year for Garfield, as he earned his first Golden Globe nomination for his role in “The Social Network” and is likely to earn an Oscar nod as well. Maguire has been doing pretty well for himself since the news too. As a huge fan of Spider-Man since he was 4 years old, Garfield was thrilled to be cast as his comic book hero. This franchise is a big step away from his previous dramatic roles, but Garfield compared Stan Lee’s comic books to a “modern kind of Greek mythology” in terms of their themes. Filming began on the film two weeks before Christmas, and the star confirmed that the footage is being shot in 3-D for its planned 2012 release. Garfield said footage was shown on the camera monitors in 3-D as well, so director Marc Webb and the rest of the production staff would sit behind the camera wearing their “silly glasses” while he and co-star Emma Stone performed. As for his casting, Garfield told BBC News, “It’s wonderful in theory, isn’t it? You kind of go, ‘Well, this is going to be great.’ But then, of course, in practice, it’s obviously a great deal of hard work and a great deal of pressure, but wonderful. It’s incredible.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Spider-Man.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Jon Favreau Won’t Direct ‘Iron Man 3’

Marvel is in search of a new director for third installment of the comic book franchise, according to reports. By Kara Warner Jon Favreau on the set of “Iron Man 2” Photo: Merrick Morton/Paramount On a day when the movie industry was focused on the Golden Globe nominations , just like in the movies, Hollywood got a few surprise twists. First, Ryan Reynolds confirmed to MTV News that he and wife Scarlett Johansson are splitting. And now, word is that Jon Favreau will not return to direct “Iron Man 3.” According to New York Magazine ‘s Vulture blog, Favreau informed Marvel Studios as recently as Monday night that he would not direct the third film in the blockbuster franchise. The news is shocking considering the massive box-office success and popularity of “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2.” With few details having been made public, we can only speculate about what might have led Favreau to drop out. MTV News spoke to the director just last month, and he seemed uncertain about plans for the third film, particularly with regard to a story line and his impression that Marvel was preoccupied with “The Avengers” movie. “In theory, ‘Iron Man 3’ is going to be a sequel or continuation of ‘Thor,’ ‘Hulk,’ ‘Captain America’ and ‘Avengers,’ ” Favreau said. “This whole world … I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys. “Honestly, right now ‘Captain America’ and ‘Thor’ are their big priorities,” he continued. “And you learn things by shooting and making movies. The script is one thing, but when you actually see what you land on at the editing room — especially with Marvel where they film, cut, film some more and shape the film — you really learn as you go.” “Iron Man 3” is currently scheduled for a May 13, 2013, release. New York Magazine reported that Marvel began their search for Favreau’s replacement on Monday night. What do you think of Favreau parting ways with “Iron Man 3”? Tell us in the comments! Wikileaks protests in Spain over Julian Assange arrest – BBC News –

Protests have taken place across Spain calling for the release of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who is facing extradition from the UK to Sweden for alleged sexual offences. Hundreds of people gathered outside the British embassy in Madrid calling for him to be freed. Wikileaks is publishing insights from hundreds of thousands of sensitive US diplomatic and military documents. The demonstrators believe Mr Assange's detention is politically motivated. The whistle-blowing website has angered and embarrassed governments around the world through its publication in recent weeks of classified US diplomatic cables. Mr Assange was detained in London on Tuesday after Sweden secured an international warrant for his arrest. Prosecutors in Sweden say they want to question him in connection with the sexual offence allegations. He was refused bail by a British court and has said he will fight extradition. There have also been calls from some in the US for his arrest and prosecution on charges related directly to Wikileaks' activity. Sensitive issue While supporters online have mounted cyber-protests against Mr Assange's detention, Saturday's protests were some of the first street demonstrations in support of Wikileaks. Wearing face masks associated with the “Anonymous” group of hackers – which launched cyber attacks after Mr Assange's arrest in the UK – the crowd in Madrid shouted for his freedom, outside the vast glass tower that houses the British embassy Many of the demonstrators were angry at some of the revelations in the cables, says the BBC's Sarah Rainsford in Madrid. These include the suggestion Spain came under pressure to stop a criminal investigation into the killing of Jose Couso, a Spanish cameraman who died when American soldiers fired a tank round into his hotel in Baghdad. The Free Wikileaks website, which organised the demonstrations, said protests were also planned for other Spanish cities, including Barcelona, Valencia and Seville. It called for the full restoration of Wikileaks' website, which was denied hosting services by Amazon after the first of the leaked cables were published two weeks ago. The protest organisers also demanded that Visa and MasterCard restore credit card services because, it said, no one had proven Mr Assange's guilt. Our correspondent says the issue of freedom of speech is sensitive for Spaniards, who only emerged from four decades of authoritarian rule in the 1970s. added by: toyotabedzrock

Comic Book Gods Worth Worshiping !

Top 10 Comic Book Gods Worth Worshipping | Ranker – A World of Lists Of all the super heroes based on mythological gods, it is the Mighty Thor who is the longest running and most popular. # 1 ! ) ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY THOR! Created by Stan Lee in 1962, Thor was created simply because Lee was running out of ideas for giving normal humans super powers. There are only so many radioactive spiders and gamma bombs after all. So why not just make his new hero an actual God? Instead of going for the more well known Greco/Roman myths, Stan and artist Jack Kirby opted for the lesser known Norse Viking mythology, and the whole thing worked like gangbusters. For some reason, Stan gave the Norse Gods the affectation of speaking in Shakespearean dialect, which made zero logical sense, and yet everybody rolled with it. Although a contemporary of Spider-Man, The Hulk, and the X-Men, Thor never really achieved their mainstream success, although that is due to a change next year when Marvel Studios releases their Thor movie. Hopefully by this time next year, little kids across America will be yielding plastic versions of Mjolnir, Thor's enchanted hammer, and speaking in 'thees” and “thous”. We can only hope that our favorite God has the kind of success he deserves. LINK – – – http://www.ranker.com/list/top-10-comic-book-gods-worth-worshipping/eric-diaz?pa… added by: remanns

Owen Wilson Promises ‘Hansel Swagger’ In ‘Zoolander’ Sequel

Actor says draft of script is ‘really funny.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Owen Wilson Photo: MTV News At New York Comic Con in October, “Zoolander 2” writer/director Justin Theroux told MTV News that when we finally catch up with Derek and his buddy Hansel — the fashion world’s It dudes back in the 2001 original — we’re hardly going to recognize them. “We start off with them in a pretty bad place,” he said of the sequel plans. “They’re about to ring 40’s bell. They have to claw their way back into the fashion industry in some way or another.” But while these two dimwitted male models might no longer be A-list fashionistas, that doesn’t mean they’ve lost the egocentric mojo that makes them tick. Just take it from Hansel himself, Owen Wilson. “The thing about Hansel is he can’t ever imagine himself, so even if he isn’t the #1 guy, I think he still carries himself as if,” Wilson told MTV News. “He’ll still have that Hansel swagger.” Though a draft of the script is done — Wilson called it “really funny” — there’s still no set date for production to begin. When MTV News caught up with Ben Stiller last month, he told us they’re hoping to begin shooting in 2011. “We’re working on it, we’re working on it,” he said. “Hopefully next year we’re going to be making it. But we’ve been full steam ahead on it.” The fashion world, of course, has changed a great deal since ’01, with new trendsetters coming onto the scene in the years since Mugatu hilariously introduced his Derelicte collection, featuring models dolled up like rag-covered bums. And Wilson has a feeling that none other than Lady Gaga, that meat-dress-wearing fashion icon, could be perfect for a “Zoolander 2” cameo. “Maybe she makes a good foil for Hansel,” he laughed.
