New Flash Movie To Be Like Silence Of The Lambs & Seven And Other Horrible News

Greg Berlanti, the man who shot to fame because he decided that Joey should kiss Pacey on Dawson’s Creek , is one of the writers of the forthcoming Green Lantern movie and is also putting together the story for its sequel and for the new Flash movie. But based on his ideas for them, I’m not sure he’s really read the comic books in question.

Justin Bieber Activity Drives Three Percent Of Twitter Traffic

‘Racks of servers are dedicated to him,’ says Dustin Curtis, designer who works for Twitter. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage There are any number of ways to measure just how deeply Justin Bieber has impacted American society: from platinum record sales to sold-out shows packed with screaming fans to the popularity of the singer’s signature brush-down bowl haircut. But on Tuesday, a designer at Twitter put Bieb’s influence in a thoroughly modern context. “At any moment, Justin Bieber uses 3 percent of our infrastructure. Racks of servers are dedicated to him,” tweeted Dustin Curtis, a designer who works at the micro-blogging service. That tidbit should come as no surprise, since Bieber — slated to perform at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards — has more than 5 million followers and is an almost daily trending topic on the 140-character-limit service. He also noted that there are three things that reliably drive traffic at Twitter: “(a) bashing airlines, (b) bashing Comic Sans, (c) Justin Bieber.” Tech blog Gizmodo reported that Curtis confirmed his tweet was no joke and that he got that information directly from another Twitter employee. The blog noted that even though Bieber is often a trending topic, given the fact that Twitter has 180 million unique visitors a month, his 3 percent land grab is still pretty impressive. Curtis later tweeted that “most of the popular users on Twitter have dedicated servers for their accounts,” which The Hollywood Reporter took to mean that stars such as Ashton Kutcher, Britney Spears and Kim Kardashian, each with more than four million followers, likely have their own racks as well. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Related Artists Justin Bieber

Incredible Blind Animals That are Hardly Senseless (Slideshow)

Image credit: johntrainor /Flickr In the comic Daredevil , mild-mannered Mathew Murdock is blinded when a chemical spills onto his face from a passing truck. With his vision impaired, the rest of his senses become heightened. Plot devices aside, nature is full of animals that, lacking a highly-developed sense of sight, are able to accomplish incredible things with their other senses.

Tim Burton Reuniting With ‘Ed Wood’ Writers For ‘Addams Family’

Team is also developing ‘Big Eyes,’ based on artist Margaret Keane and her portraits of big-eyed children. By Adam Rosenberg Tim Burton Photo: Tony Barson/ WireImage One of filmmaker Tim Burton’s strongest efforts of the past 30 years is, ironically, “Ed Wood,” a biopic charting the life of the famed director of 1959’s “Plan 9 From Outer Space,” a work widely regarded as the worst film of all time. It’s great then to see that Burton is reuniting with the writing team behind the 1994 release. Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski will join Burton in developing a script for the planned stop-motion adaptation of Charles Addams’ famed comic strip, “The Addams Family,” Deadline reports . Burton will also produce with Chris Meledandri for Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures. The same article reveals that Burton will also produce the writing duo’s fact-based drama “Big Eyes,” which is “based on artist Margaret Keane’s struggle to get credit for the line of paintings of big-eyed children that became wildly popular in the ’60s.” Alexander and Karaszewski wrote the script with the intent of directing themselves. The “Addams Family” news comes several months after reports surfaced that Burton would direct a 3-D stop-motion adaptation of the famed comic strip. In a statement made to MTV News at the time, Burton’s reps stated, “There is no truth to the story. Tim has not lined up any of his upcoming projects.” It was clear even then that Burton could settle on “Addams Family” next. He still could direct, too. Deadline reports that he will “direct a film that is one of the plum projects on Meledandri’s slate for Illumination,” which of course now includes “Addams Family.” “Big Eyes” came up while Burton was in discussions with Alexander and Karaszewski about the comic strip adaptation. “It turns out he’s a big fan of Margaret and has commissioned artwork from her,” Alexander told Deadline. It doesn’t hurt that the actual story is a remarkable truth-is-stranger-than-fiction tale. Walter Keane, Margaret’s husband, became a celebrity in the 1950s, riding a wave of success from his mass-produced prints of big-eyed children. Though the images bore his signature, Margaret was the one with an aptitude for making art. When the two eventually divorced and Margaret tried to make it known that she was the artist, Walter sued. The case that followed culminated in a dramatic showdown in which the judge ordered that two easels be set up in the courtroom, staging what essentially amounted to a paint-off. No release window is listed for either project, though IMDb’s listing for “Big Eyes” is labeled 2011. With the script already written, a budget that is reportedly “in the teens” and Burton producing, it is certainly possible that the Keane pic will be ready for next year. ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’: The Reviews Are In!

One critic hails a ‘more heroic’ portrayal by star Michael Cera, while another calls the comic book flick ‘one long, sneering in-joke.’ By Eric Ditzian Michael Cera in “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” Depending on who you hang out with and what websites you frequent, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” is either the most authentic coming-of-age love story that’s ever been told about kids who grew up with 8-bit video games or a movie that will leave you screaming, “Death to hipsters!” What else is there to say? To read through reviews of Edgar Wright’s film is to understand how fully a critic’s biography and aesthetic vision influence his or her writing. We bring our own personal baggage to the cinema, even if we all feed from the same bin of stale popcorn. We’ve gathered together a few of these wildly divergent reviews. Before making up your mind about whether you’re a “Scott Pilgrim” fan or hater, you can check out what the critics are saying. Or better yet, see the movie yourself, and then make up your mind. The Story “Over-explaining Scott Pilgrim’s plot would take away from the Pop Rocks-exploding fun. Scott (Michael Cera) is the 22-year-old bassist for a mediocre Toronto punk band called Sex Bob-Omb. (Their songs, which I found a bit too realistically mediocre, were written by Beck.) Scott has a sassy gay roommate (Kieran Culkin), a meddling sister (Anna Kendrick), and a girlfriend, Knives Chau (Ellen Wong), a Sex Bob-Omb superfan who’s still in high school. But Scott falls hard when the purple-haired, poker-faced Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) moves to town. To win her, he must not only summon the courage to break up with Knives; he must defeat an evil legion of Ramona’s seven exes, who include a vegan rock star (Brandon Routh), a Bollywood-dancing Goth (Satya Bhabha), and twin Japanese DJs (Shota and Keita Saito).” — Dana Stevens, Slate . The Visuals “The movie does everything its makers can dream up to imitate a manga: Screens split in half and then in half again. Action speeds up or slows down. Comic book word sounds — ‘whoosh,’ ‘r-i-i-i-i-n-g,’ ‘thud’ and the like — pepper the screen. Backstories about exes are told in rudimentary sketches. The movie frame becomes a graffiti zone where the filmmakers can insert all sorts of written commentary including the fact that a character has to pee.” — Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter. Michael Cera “As Pilgrim, Cera is more assertive and, yes, heroic than he has been in most of his work (though there is ‘Youth in Revolt’ to bear in mind). He’s gone past the stammering gawkiness of his early work into something less adolescent, if not fully mature. The transformation hasn’t reached a conclusion yet, but it’s interesting to watch.” — Shawn Levy, The Oregonian. The Director “Much of the movie’s whacked-out humor is the work of the director. Wright’s facility with eccentric ornamentation — bursts of canned laugh-track laughter, proudly cartoonish graphics, dreamscape enchantments and sudden split-screenery — is irresistibly endearing; and his whiz-bang editing is a marvel throughout. (He’s always one step ahead of the viewer, suddenly taking us places we didn’t realize we were ready to go to yet.) And the script, which he co-wrote, is a feast of deadpan throwaways. (‘I’ve dabbled with being a bitch,’ says Ramona. ‘My brother is permanently enfeebled,’ notes Stacey.)” — Kurt Loder, MTV News . The Dissenters “The story and characters of ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,’ then, are negligible. But fans of the novel aren’t likely to care, reserving their most passionate interest for how director Edgar Wright has brought their precious antihero to the screen … He dials ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ up to 11 within minutes, leaving him nowhere to take the narrative energy. Trippy onscreen titles (‘Riiiing!’ when a telephone rings, ‘Dddddd’ when someone plays the bass), Super Mario Bros. graphics, light saber duels, jump cuts, screen wipes, zingers, quips and doggerel — it’s all played with the same emphasis and knowing insularity. Unless you can hear its particular whistle, ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ is a grind, as monotonous and enervating as one long, sneering in-joke.” — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post. The Final Word “There is plenty of [visual wit] in ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ — fast cuts, off-kilter puns, sight gags and sound effects in such profusion that you may want to see it again as soon as it’s over. But underneath is a disarming sincerity and a remarkable willingness to acknowledge ambivalence, self-doubt, hurt feelings and all the other complications of youth. At the end, the movie comes home to the well-known territory of the coming-of-age story, with an account of lessons learned and conflicts resolved. But you’ll swear you’ve never seen anything like it before.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times. What did you think of Michael Cera’s latest flick? Share your reviews in the comments! DMX Released From Jail, Rents Car, Pulled Over, Arrested For Lack of Valid License

DMX is the man. When barely a day passes in between your run-ins with the cops, that’s when you know you are hard core. Lindsay Lohan and her driving woes have nothing on him. Just hours after X was released from jail yesterday, the rapper was pulled over by the police driving down Sunset Blvd in a rented Mercedes and busted again! X’s manager says he recording studio around 11:20 p.m. when he was stopped for a minor traffic violation. Officers then learned he didn’t have a valid license. A rare kind of DMX photo – it wasn’t taken in a police station! DMX was issued a citation and will be due to appear in court sometime in the near future. Cops even allowed a passenger in the car to drive the rapper home. That’s nice. Give the man a break. He’s been in solitary confinement enough times this year already … might as well give him a night or two in his own bed. Yesterday’s release from jail came after the man served just 18 days of a 90-day sentence stemming from a reckless driving conviction way back in 2002. Lohan was let out after 14 for the same thing. Just saying.

Shelly Thompson Dares to Hassle the Hoff

A woman claiming to be David Hasselhoff’s girlfriend says she plans to sue the star for domestic abuse, even though he claims they’ve never even met. These things happen when you are an international sex symbol and revered for your role in the epic, long-running television drama known as Baywatch. Shelly Thompson, who also goes by Shane Starlet, is alleging she was physically hassled by the Hoff and has engaged a high-profile Hollywood lawyer. If Thompson is to be believed (a big if) her story is no joke. She says she began living with Hasselhoff in 2007 until their relationship came to an end this July, when he threw her out of his car onto the street. “My mother and I were on our way down to San Diego with David for his Comic Con appearance,” Thompson recalled . “He was drunk, we got into an argument and he pulled over on the side of the road and told us to, ‘Get the f*%k out!’” Who does he think he is, Mel Gibson ? No photo evidence of Thompson and Hasselhoff together is know to exist, despite her claims that she and Hasselhoff – who is famously battling alcohol and other problems – dated for nearly three years. Quite fishy, no? Another hole? Thompson claims the incident occurred on July 24. There are photos of Hasselhoff at a Comic Con event in San Diego with his daughter on July 22 – two days before Thompson says she went to the event with him. Hasselhoff’s legal team says this reeks of a shakedown, claiming “he has never met” Shelly Thompson, “doesn’t know anyone by that name” and the whole story “is absolutely not true.” The accuser says it is true, and there are witnesses. We’ll see.
