Harvey Pekar: In His Own Words

MTV News caught up with the late comics icon last September. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Rick Marshall Harvey Pekar Photo: Evan Agostini/ Getty Images “American Splendor” author Harvey Pekar died early Monday (July 12) at the age of 70, leaving behind a voluminous exploration of his grumpy musings and everyman life experiences, his anxieties and his foibles, his pals and his demons. Pekar’s comics, illustrated by the likes of legend R. Crumb, were like a mid-’70s version of a blog, an almost living journal in which the author committed every triumph and every indignity to the page. He toiled as an underground comic for years, popping up every so often on “Late Night With David Letterman” for memorably disastrous appearances. Then in 2003, Paul Giamatti played Pekar in the Sundance-winning, Oscar-nominated biopic “American Splendor,” and Pekar’s work went from cult object to well-known commodity. Last September, MTV News had the opportunity to chat with Pekar as he launched “The Pekar Project,” a new webcomic series. As we look back and celebrate the life and work of a true artist, here is Harvey Pekar in his own words: On His Writing Process : “It’s real easy for me to write a lot of stories. I just go and I live through something and I go home and write about it. It’s that quick.” On Artistic Innovation : “I’d like to see the comics’ style expanded. I’d like to see artists synthesize traditional comics arts style with fine-arts styles or whatever. I like to see innovation. I don’t like it when an art form becomes stagnant.” On Writing His Own Webcomics : “It’s not that I got anything against technology. It’s that technology has something against me. I have nothing against [publishing] stuff on the computer, even though I can’t use one. … I’ve just been writing stuff as it comes to me. I haven’t thought as, ‘Let me write some kind of a major opus.’ I want to see what happens. I’ll stand behind what I did.” On Comics Writers Turning to the Internet : “I think it was meant to be. When the Internet came about, that was the logical place for everyone to turn. If you look at blogs, a lot of them are memoirs or opinion pieces — stuff that’s been done in the past. Blogs are fairly short, and they’re used on the Internet. I don’t think the content of a lot of the blogs is very different. I think the medium is different, and you’re able to reach huge audiences with a minimal amount of spending.” On His Love of Jazz : “Jazz is in a very, very precarious situation right now. A respectable-sized audience hasn’t really been able to follow developments in jazz since the free jazz movement in the ’60s. Some of them can’t even get with John Coltrane. Audiences are diminishing more and more rapidly. Some of the top young musicians with something new to say can’t get record companies to put out their stuff. Jazz won’t die exactly. Jazz musicians are all going to be playing old music if they want to make a living at it, like what Wynton Marsalis is doing.” Share your memories of Harvey Pekar’s work in the comments below.

Joss Whedon’s Wonder Woman Would Have Worn Pants Too

Were you a little put out by the DC Comics unveiling of the newly redesigned Wonder Woman , who now wears pants and a Hot Topic jacket while boasting breasts the size of her head? If so, I’m curious to hear what you’d make of the following designs, which were commissioned for Joss Whedon’s aborted take on the project.

‘Toy Story 3,’ ‘Grown Ups’ Play Well Together At Weekend Box Office

Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise’s ‘Knight and Day’ fizzles at #3. By Josh Wigler Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear and Buzz Lightyear in “Toy Story 3” Photo: Disney/Pixar The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Toy Story 3” ($59 million) #2 “Grown Ups” ($41 million) #3 “Knight and Day” ($20.5 million) #4 “The Karate Kid” ($15.4 million) #5 “The A-Team” ($6 million) Moviegoers pining for their childhood years and those not quite ready to admit that they’re well into their adult lives walked away happy this weekend as “Toy Story 3” and “Grown Ups” were the big winners at the weekend box office, while “Knight and Day” opened to disappointing results. Landing in first place was “Toy Story 3” for its second-consecutive weekend victory. The Pixar family film earned $59 million in its second frame, bringing the latest “Toy Story” installment’s domestic total to $226.6 million after just two weeks. With an additional $100 million earned overseas, “Toy Story 3” has a worldwide toy chest worth $326.6 million, far exceeding its production budget of $200 million. Although the toys had the most fun at the box office this weekend, there was plenty to enjoy for “Grown Ups” as well. The Sony comedy stars veteran comedians and noted friends Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider, whose collective comedy power resulted in a strong $41 million debut. While name recognition was a helpful factor in the success of “Grown Ups,” it did little for Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz’s “Knight and Day.” The action-comedy earned $20.5 million over the weekend and $27.8 million since debuting on Wednesday, an unimpressive result given the box-office returns that Cruise and Diaz were once used to seeing. Landing in fourth and fifth place were “The Karate Kid” and “The A-Team,” proving their continued staying power in their third week at the box office. “The A-Team” has just barely crossed its production budget of $110 million, thanks to foreign ticket sales. Last weekend’s newcomer “Jonah Hex” virtually disappeared from sight with a $1.6 million 10th place finish, leaving many moviegoers scratching their heads wondering what went wrong with the Josh Brolin-starring DC Comics adaptation. Upcoming Releases Bella Swan finds herself in the crosshairs of deadly vampires and difficult romantic decisions once again with the arrival of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” on Wednesday. But are the legions of Team Edward and Team Jacob supporters enough to take box office gold away from M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender”? Which movie do you think will top next weekend’s box office? Share your predictions in the comments. ‘Jonah Hex’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Before heading off to the Wild West with Josh Brolin and Megan Fox, check in with our cheat sheet. By Eric Ditzian Megan Fox and Josh Brolin in “Jonah Hex” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures The 2010 summer-movie season has given us swords-and-sandals epics, superhero melees and a cavalcade of 3-D animated blockbusters. What we haven’t yet seen is a straight-up western, partly because that gun-toting, tobacco-chewing genre has largely fallen out of favor in Hollywood. All that changes Friday (June 18), as “Jonah Hex” rides into theaters in a storm of CGI dust and supernatural-inspired storytelling. Josh Brolin stars as Hex himself, a facially scarred bounty hunter with a taste for bullets, broads and revenge. His adversary is John Malkovich’s Quentin Turnbull, who thinks it would be a good idea to unleash the fires of hell on the entire planet. Hex doesn’t think that’s such a swell idea, plus Turnbull’s the dude who killed his family and hot-branded his face, so a quest for vengeance sounds like a pretty good idea. Before you take your own quest to the cinema this weekend, be sure to check out MTV News’ cheat sheet: everything you need to know about “Jonah Hex.” Wrangling the Horses In the early 1970s, writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga created “Jonah” for DC Comics, and the surly antihero continues to appear within DC pages to this day. It wasn’t until summer 2007, though, that Warner Bros. began to ramp up plans to bring the character to the big screen. Brolin began circling the role of Jonah in late 2008 and stayed interested even as directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (“Crank”) parted ways with the production over creative differences. Why did Brolin stay on? “When I first read it, I thought, ‘Oh my God, it’s awful!’ ” Brolin told MTV News . “And then I had a moment a week later, and I thought, ‘Why is it awful? Maybe the thing to do is to do the most awful movie I can find.’ ” Malkovich found the movie in early ’09, followed shortly by Megan Fox as a Wild West prostitute named Lilah. In April, we got our first look at the Louisiana-based production, thanks to some rather revealing on-set pics of Fox . Not to be outdone by his sultry co-star, Brolin made his presence as Jonah known in June, when the first photos surfaced of the actor in full, facial prosthetics. Enter the Hex As the year pushed forward, we began to hear from almost everyone with a key role in the production. Brolin spoke glowingly of new director Jimmy Hayward (“Horton Hears a Who!”), Malkovich told us why he signed on for the role, and Fox said of the production , “I think it’s a really good interpretation of the comic. It somehow manages to be super-violent while still having a PG-13 rating. I don’t know how they did that.” Neither do we, but the whole thing seemed to be shaping up quite nicely. Comic-Con brought us the film’s first poster and fresh promo pics followed in the fall. Then trouble set in. Re-shoots kicked off in January of this year, intended to fix unspecified problems with the footage and to be overseen by “I Am Legend” director Francis Lawrence, who was hired as a consultant. And as the June release date approached, fans started to wonder when the first trailer would arrive. It finally appeared at the very end of April — and it looked fairly rad — but questions remained. Days before the trailer dropped, Brolin himself told us the film was very much in flux. “We’re still in the process of solidifying that tone,” he said. “There’s a lot of humor to use in this cut. We’ve been going, ‘How much humor do we use? Do we stay with the emotional line of the story? How can we release some of the exposition so we can just rely on the action?’ All this kind of sh–. We’re in the midst of it, man!” We’re Going Straight to the Wild Wild West From Will Smith and Escape Club songs to the decades’ worth of face-off-at-high-noon flicks, the Wild West has proved fertile creative ground across the pop-culture spectrum. It remains to be seen, however, if “Jonah” can overcome its troubled production history and win big at the box office. The sneak peeks certainly look good: there’s Jonah facing off against Turnbull ; Jonah and Lilah trying to get out of a jam and then showing off their shooting skills ; Jonah getting a little sensitive about his disfigured face; and Jonah riding a horse with a Gatling gun strapped to its side . So will fans come out in support of this latest comic book adaptation? Is there a chance there will be more cinematic “Jonah” coming down the line? Producers have certainly planned for that possibility. “They leave it open for a sequel,” Fox told us . “They tweaked the script so there might be a sequel if necessary.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Jonah Hex.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Ghost Rider, Karate Kid Sequels In Development, Obviously

So a few weeks ago I’m in a bar with a friend, and we’re talking movies, alas, and he says, “You hear about the Ghost Writer sequel?” I thought about this and wondered who slipped drugs into my beer. “A Ghost Writer sequel?” I repeated. “What would that even be ? Roman Polanski’s under house arrest! What characters would even be around for it?” Friendo shook his head. “No, no, no — Ghost RIDER . The Nicolas Cage thing? Marvel Comics? Hairpiece?” I sheepishly, desperately gulped the rest of my beer. Anyway, this is the scenic route to saying that Sony is finally moving on a Ghost Rider sequel, and Cage is finally considering joining up. Oh, and Karate Kid 2 isn’t far behind.

Megan Fox Describes Her Painful ‘Jonah Hex’ Corset

‘We got [my waistline] down to 18 inches,’ she tells MTV News of the costume. By Josh Wigler Megan Fox Photo: MTV News There are many things a moviegoer can expect going into “Jonah Hex,” the Josh Brolin-starring DC Comics adaptation hitting theaters this weekend. For one, there are plenty of stylized shootouts. For another, the titular Hex is a grizzly gunslinger with an ugly mug that gives Two-Face from “The Dark Knight” a run for his money. Then, of course, there’s Megan Fox’s waistline. The “Jennifer’s Body” actress and former female lead of the “Transformers” franchise stars in “Hex” as Lilah, a gun-wielding prostitute with a very tight-fitting corset. Early photographs from the “Hex” set left many fans dumbfounded at just how constricting Fox’s corset appeared to be, leaving the actress with what she described to MTV News as an 18-inch waistline. “It’s small,” she admitted. “We got it down to 18 inches. But in the action scenes, we loosened it up, because everyone was afraid I was going to pass out.” As if the discomfort weren’t bad enough, Fox’s midsection suffered even when the corset was off. “At the end of the day when we would take it off, it would leave these deep grooves, these deep indents from the boning in the corset,” she described. “I’d have it for the whole next day. The next 24 hours I’d be imprinted with the corset. It hurts your ribs!” But don’t go thinking Fox is completely anti-corset based on her “Hex” experience. “I do think there’s a place for corsets,” she said. “I think they should come back. They should make a reappearance. I enjoy them, but maybe I’m sick.” Sadly, the actress wasn’t able to take her character’s corsets home as souvenirs from the set. “Those were all actually vintage corsets that needed to go back,” Fox said. “I couldn’t own them. Plus, they were all falling apart by the end of the movie. I beat them to hell.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Jonah Hex.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds Reunite For ‘Most Wanted’

The ‘Proposal’ co-stars will reteam with the movie’s screenwriter, director and producers for new action comedy. By Josh Wigler Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images After Sandra Bullock shared a titillating kiss with “Proposal” co-star Ryan Reynolds’ wife, Scarlett Johansson, at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, the two will reteam for “Most Wanted,” a new action comedy from Universal Pictures. Based on a pitch from “Proposal” screenwriter Pete Chiarelli, “Most Wanted” tells the story of a criminal suspect (Bullock) who is apprehended and escorted to a court hearing by an FBI agent (Reynolds). On their way to court, the two are attacked in an ambush and are ultimately forced to go on the run. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Most Wanted” will strike a similar tone to “Midnight Run,” Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin’s 1988 comedy about a bounty hunter (De Niro) tasked with hunting down a mob accountant (Grodin). In addition to Bullock, Reynolds and Chiarelli, other members from the “Proposal” creative team joining up for “Most Wanted” include director Anne Fletcher and producers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. Reynolds is also executive-producing the movie alongside his Dark Trick Films partner Jonathan Komack-Martin. “Most Wanted” marks Bullock’s first major casting announcement since winning an Academy Award for “The Blind Side.” Reynolds, on the other hand, has been quite busy: The actor is currently shooting a role as cocky fighter pilot-turned-superhero Hal Jordan in director Martin Campbell’s “Green Lantern,” based on the DC Comics series of the same name. He’s also committed to “Deadpool,” 20th Century Fox’s spinoff of last year’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” and “R.I.P.D.,” based on the Dark Horse comics series about an undead police department. Additionally, Reynolds is slated to film “The Change-Up” alongside “Up in the Air” actor Jason Bateman. Michael Bay To Produce ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Reboot

‘Transformers’ director has plenty of experience adapting kid-focused properties for the big screen. By Eric Ditzian Michael Bay Photo: Dr. Billy Ingram/WireImage In the spring of 2009, at the same time that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles celebrated their 25th anniversary as the gnarliest martial-arts-enabled reptiles in the pop culture universe, we got some news that Michelangelo and his buds would surely dub “wicked.” A new live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie was in the works, almost two decades after the original. Friday (May 28) brings word that the upcoming flick will be produced by a guy with more than a little experience adapting long-established kid-focused properties for the big screen: Michael Bay. Deadline.com reports that Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners will take on producing duties after Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon approached them with the property. Bay, of course, produced and directed two “Transformers” movies for Paramount and is ramping up to shoot a third one this summer. Even before the movie was announced last year, MTV News spoke with “Turtles” co-creator Peter Laird about what a rebooted franchise might look like. “I can say that at this point there are a lot of positive feelings about a ‘Batman Begins’-style ‘reboot,’ which would, of necessity, include a retelling of the Turtles’ origin story,” he said. “Having said that, I would also be into an all-new story, if it was decided that that was a more desirable direction. Either way is fine with me, to be honest! “Simply telling the story of what happened in the first issue of the ‘TMNT’ comic book would be a pretty short movie, so I suspect other things from the Turtles’ history in the comics might be brought into it,” Laird continued. “I would not be unhappy to somehow see the tale of Baxter Stockman and the robotic ‘mousers’ folded into this movie, as well as some elements possibly setting up the TCRI connection for a possible sixth (or seventh) movie. But I think I’m getting a little ahead of myself there.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

The Losers Director Sylvain White on Race, Remakes and Video Games

The success of Stomp the Yard in 2007 might have heralded several things, but few would have predicted that its director, Sylvain White, would suddenly become a familiar name to the fanboy community. Then again, White is a major fanboy himself, and he’s used his heat to attach himself to a number of cult properties, including an adaptation of the Frank Miller graphic novel Ronin and a film version of the classic video game franchise Castlevania (which he’s since departed). The release today of White’s The Losers (adapted from a DC Comics comic book series) may be the first example of his fannish tendencies made manifest, but if he has his way, it’ll hardly be the last. I talked to White today about how he weathers the scrutiny of superfans, and what he’s got in mind for Ronin , his remake of the French film Le Magnifique , and several other properties.
