Archie Comics Introduces Gay Character

comics101 Longest running American comic book, Archie, is introducing an openly-gay character in the name of Kevin Keller. Kevin Keller is described as a “hunky new kid” by the New York Daily News.  His character will make debut in the September issue of the Archie universe’s “Veronica” comic book. The storyline for the said issue would  introduce Keller as a romantic interest of already-established character Veronica Lodge, who seems confused as to why Keller appears immune to her flirty nature and charm. It’s later revealed through a dialogue with another character that Keller is gay. Since the announcement was made to include Keller in the comics, Archie Comics Co-CEO Jon Goldwater says his voicemail has been flooded with messages, mostly of support for the new character. It’s unclear whether Keller’s introduction will be temporary as an introduction to a hot-button social issue or whether Keller will be a permanent fixture in the Archie universe. Captain America: Chris Evans Confirmed & Bucky Has Been Cast

We’ve gotten some major Captain America news in the past 24 hours. While we may have already learned last week that actor Chris Evans had landed the prestigious title role in The First Avenger: Captain America , it was still sort of classified merely as a “strong rumor.” That status has now been upgraded to iron-clad fact, as Marvel has issued a press release today, which finally confirms his casting. However, that’s not even the big news. Marvel is also confirming the truth of a rumor reported late yesterday by Deadline , that Gossip Girl and Hot Tub Time Machine star, Sebastian Stan has been cast to play Cap’s legendary young sidekick, Bucky . Just a few days ago, the mere existence of Bucky in the film was still something that was up in the air. Now, we not only know he’s in it, but who will play him. Introduced in the 1941 debut issue, Cap’s young sidekick Bucky Barnes was always seen as a sort of “poor man’s Robin.” And much like Jason Todd, the second version of Robin, Bucky’s death was one of those moments in comics legendary for not only its harshness, but for Marvel’s faithfulness to the idea of keeping him dead. As the old saying went, O.B.S.D. (Only Bucky Stays Dead.) However, that venerable saying was squashed when he was revived in the comics as Winter Soldier in 2005. He would even eventually replace Steve Rogers as Captain America when he was famously killed at the climax of Civil War . How will the character of Bucky be handled in the upcoming Avengers prequel? The casting of Sebastian Stan for this character is rather interesting, and may lift the veil a bit, regarding the film’s character dynamics. Stan, at 26, is only about a year-and-a-half younger than Cap’s Chris Evans. If I were to speculate, based on what we now know, it seems that the two will likely begin the film as best-friends, when the opportunity to enter the Super Soldier program goes to Steve and possibly divides their friendship briefly. After Cap becomes infused with his new powers and abilities, he’ll probably enjoys his initial victories, but soon realizes that he still needs his old buddy at his side. So, it looks like we will see more of a situation of the two of them being friends and equals, rather than Bucky being Cap’s 15 year-old “young ward” type who was recruited to help rally youth to enlist in the military and fight the Nazis. In fact, just looking at Stan, it almost seems surprising that he wasn’t up for the role of Cap himself, based on the guys who were once in consideration . (One of which included Stan’s Gossip Girl co-star, Chace Crawford.) What do you think about the choice of Sebastian Stan as Bucky? Does it work? Should they have gone younger/older? THQ Developing A Red Faction Movie

Expanding video game fiction beyond the gaming space has long been a tricky and perilous proposition. (Trying to adapt movie fiction to games has been equally unsuccessful for the most part as well). But recently, the likes of Ubisoft and Electronic Arts have managed to carry over some of their respective properties (Assassin’s Creed and Dead Space/Mass Effect for instance) into other mediums (live-action shorts, comic books, etc.). Fairly soon, it appears that THQ will toss their hat into the “trans-media” ring by taking their Red Faction franchise from the console to the silver screen. THQ core division vice-president Danny Bilson recently told Computer and Videogames that a Red Faction movie is on the horizon, and will tie into the next installment in the series, which is set to be released next year. But don’t misunderstand. These will be two unique projects. “My game is going to get made either way,” Bilson explained, “but what I do is I’m giving these movie guys the opportunity to meet me two or three years at the end with a triple-A, awesome game and a triple-A, awesome movie that compliment each other – and certainly don’t repeat each other – and start to build a world and a fiction and all of that.” Bilson went on to address the lack of quality in the game-movie crossover space, saying “Other companies are, ‘oh, we just license this IP to this studio’ and you never see anything, or at the most you see some bad Mario Bros. movie…We’re going to be doing the most robust trans-media plays anybody’s ever seen in the games business.” Whether THQ can succeed where so many others have failed remains to be seen, but they seem to be on the right track. Plus, Bilson has a long history in film, television and comic books, so that helps. iPad Apps To Keep An Eye On

Which apps could be game-changers and make the Apple tablet worth considering? By Brian Warmoth iPad Photo: Apple The iPad will inherit 150,000 apps when it lands in consumers’ hands this weekend, according to Apple. With more than a thousand new ones entering the fray that are uniquely optimized for the device, however, casual browsers will have a lot to sift through. Given the iPad’s hardware strengths and the new roles it could play as both a work tool and entertainment platform, a few apps could become game-changers and justify the Apple tablet on their own. Netflix App A leaked look at Netflix’s stream-able video app for the iPad indicates that subscribers with unlimited accounts might be able to get access to their queues on the go. Its availability would put the app in direct competition with iTunes, but a streaming process that requires a constant Internet connection may distinguish Netflix’s app from iTunes’ rental service enough that they can still play nicely together in the App Store. iWork Keynote, Numbers and Pages Apps The iPhone and iPod Touch hit home runs in portable gaming, but they came up short competing with netbooks and laptops in terms of business applications. Google Docs support was great, but iWork apps that will allow word processing as well as spreadsheet and slideshow creation may be the software Apple needs to serve students and working adults in a whole new way. ABC App ABC, CBS and NBC reportedly all have plans for delivering TV shows to the iPad with methods that don’t require iTunes, but ABC may be the first to come out with their own app capable of streaming programs without a browser. Depending on how ABC’s app performs, this could become a new model for networks to consider going forward. Amazon Kindle App Kindle provided a smooth yet simplified experience on the iPhone, but a larger HD screen capable of displaying big images in normal book and eReader-size dimensions could mean big things for Amazon. The Kindle app would also mean competition for Apple iBook downloads, but competing models and options for consumers can only mean better products in the long run. Marvel Comics App The iPad will be well suited for reading prose novels and textbooks, but when discussing killer apps for Spider-Man and Iron Man followers, the Marvel Comics app , designed by ComiXology, stands to make huge waves if it takes off as a distribution platform for the number-one monthly comic book publisher in America right now. Panelfly’s Comic Book Reader app will provide another source of digital graphic-novel distribution as well, so those two, Amazon and Apple’s ePub format will all be looking to define how comics get consumed on the iPad. Risk App The iPad means game developers will have to think in new proportions with new gameplay options, but no genre of gaming will be more ready to walk onto a flat multi-touch screen than board games. The potential to play table-top games over Bluetooth, WiFi and 3G with other players means EA will have a great foot in the door if they leverage Hasbro properties like Risk onto the iPad. And they will, according to Kotaku . Will you be first in line for an iPad? What apps are you excited about? Let us know in the comments below!
