42 Dead In Islamic Terrorist Attack On Nigerian College Another day, another deadly terrorist attack . Via Fox News: Islamic terrorists dressed in Nigerian military uniforms assaulted a college inside the country Sunday, gunning down dozens of students as they slept in their dorms and shot others trying to flee, witnesses say. “They started gathering students into groups outside, then they opened fire and killed one group and then moved onto the next group and killed them. It was so terrible,” one surviving student, who would only give his first name of Idris, told Reuters. The siege began at about 1 a.m. in rural Gujba. “They attacked our students while they were sleeping in their hostels, they opened fire at them,” Provost Molima Idi Mato of Yobe State College of Agriculture, told The Associated Press. The extremists also torched classrooms. Nigeria State Police Commissioner Sanusi Rufai told Reutersthat he suspected that the terrorist group Boko Haram was behind the attack, but declined to elaborate. Idi Mato said he could not give an exact death toll as security forces still are recovering bodies of students mostly aged between 18 and 22, but he said as many as 50 may have been killed. The Nigerian military has already collected 42 bodies and transported 18 wounded students to Damaturu Specialist Hospital, 25 miles north, said a military intelligence official, who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press. Two of the wounded later died, said Adamu Usman, a survivor from Gujba who was helping at the hospital. Boko Haram is aiming to establish an Islamic state in northern Nigeria and has intensified attacks on civilians in revenge for a Nigerian military offensive against the group, Reuters reports. Most schools in the area closed after militants on July 6 killed 29 pupils and a teacher, burning some alive in their hostels, at Mamudo outside Damaturu. Northeastern Nigeria is under a military state of emergency to battle an Islamic uprising prosecuted by Boko Haram militants who have killed more than 1,700 people since 2010 in their quest to install an Islamic state, though half the country’s 160 million citizens are Christian. Boko Haram means Western education is forbidden in the local Hausa language. More than 30,000 people have fled the terrorist attacks to neighboring Cameroon and Chad and the uprising combined with the military emergency has forced farmers from their fields and vendors from their markets. The attacks come as Nigeria prepares to celebrate 52 years of independence from Britain on Tuesday and amid political jockeying in the run up to presidential elections next year with many northern Muslim politicians saying they do not want another term for Jonathan, who is from the predominantly Christian south. Jeffrey Babbitt slipped into a coma and had been declared brain dead at Bellevue Hospital after he was allegedly beat by 31-year-old Lashawn Marten last week. Babbitt, a retired train conductor, was reportedly walking in Union Square around 3 p.m. Wednesday when Marten allegedly shouted a racial comment and began attacking people. “He said ‘the next white person who walks by I’m going to [expletive],’” one female witness told CBS New York. “His fist went in and the man’s head bobbed and he hit the ground and you could hear his skull hitting the ground.” Witnesses said Marten then hit two more people before demanding to see police officers. He remained at the scene until police arrived. Marten, who is apparently homeless, was watching people play chess in the park and reportedly complained that nobody wanted to play chess with him prior to the attack, according to 1010 WINS’ Carol D’Auria. Police are investigating the attack as a possible hate crime, according to NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly. Marten already faces felony assault charges. Interracial Couple Attacked While Leaving Restaurant In Queens An interracial couple who was attacked on their way home from dinner in Queens, NY say they their attackers used both racial and anti-gay slurs before the altercation that left the husband bloodied and the wife with a broken toe. via NBC New York An interracial married couple says they were attacked outside a bar in Queens early Saturday, and that their attackers used racial and homophobic slurs. Billie and Jacob James-Vogel say they and a gay friend had been celebrating Billie James-Vogel’s 40th birthday in Long Island City and were attacked when they left the bar. They say three men began hurling homophobic and racist slurs at their group before physically assaulting them. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the argument began when one of the men kissed Billie James-Vogel, and words were exchanged between the husband and that man. Jacob James-Vogel suffered a black eye and a head injury; his wife had a broken toe and other bruises. Kelly said one person had been arrested, and police were still investigating. “We’re still looking at it as a possible hate crime,” Kelly said. So sad … One Year Old Baby Shot In Baltimore Baltimore police said they charged a suspect Saturday in connection with the fatal shooting of a 1-year-old boy in South Baltimore’s Cherry Hill neighborhood. The boy’s father was also shot in what police said was a targeted attack. The shooting occurred on Friday evening when the two were in a car. Police have not identified the suspect who is in custody. Court records show that Eddie Tarver, age 20 of the 200 block of Cherry Hill Road, was charged Saturday with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder in incidents that records say occurred on Friday. At a news conference Saturday in a strip mall parking lot a few blocks from the shooting scene, Commissioner Anthony W. Batts said police have “a pretty good grasp on what occurred out here last night.” He said police believe it was not a random shooting. “But the bottom line to get across to get here is that this level of violence in this community,” Batts said, “whether it’s Cherry Hill or anywhere else in the city of Baltimore, has to end.” After the shooting, police said they chased three or four persons to the Western District. The officers who chased the suspects “showed a lot of courage” Batts added. The shooting took place in the 1200 block of Cherry Hill Road at 7:05 p.m. Friday, and the child, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at 8:26 p.m. according to Detective Angela Carter-Watson. The man who was shot was identified by three law enforcement sources as 22-year-old Rashaw Scott, also known as Davon Greene, of the 1000 block of Edmondson Ave. As of Sunday morning, he was still said to be in critical condition, according to an officials at Shock Trauma. Stop And Frisk Instills Fear In Minorities Via NewsOne reports: During the ongoing “ stop and frisk ” trial in Manhattan’s federal court, a state senator said today that NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly implemented the program to “instill fear” in the minds of the city’s Black and Latino populations. Current and former police officials have already offered testimony surrounding the policy but the testimony from State Sen. Eric Adams (D-Brooklyn) may have been one of the most explosive to date, reports the New York Daily News. During a 2010 meeting between former Gov. David Paterson, State Sen. Marty Golden (R-Brooklyn), former Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries (D-Brooklyn) and Commissioner Kelly, Sen. Adams said he expressed concerns about the policy. But Kelly allegedly responded by saying that the shakedowns were necessary. “He stated that he targeted and focused on (Blacks and Latinos) because he wanted to instill fear in them that every time that they left their homes they could be targeted by police,” Adams said while questioned by plaintiff attorney Jonathan Moore. “First of all I was amazed that he was comfortable enough to state that that in that setting,” Adams continued.
